Computer seems to be overheating

While working on the computer I started smelling something that smelled like plastic burning - then it started smelling like something electrical. Some others in my office came in because the smell had filtered through the office and we determined the smell was coming from the back of my computer. It was still working when I turned it off and I tried starting up again later and it did - but I have had many problems before now. I had to have my logic board replaced recently because I was having trouble with the screen. Since then I have had to erase the hard disk and do a complete reload of software because I could not OSx to start up (when trying to do so fan ran continously - have seen on many other posts).
I think I had read on an earlier post (when I was trying to correct the startup problem) that the first of the iMac G5 flat panels had a problem with the fans not cooling the machine properly. My extended warranty ran out in December - but if this is a problem that Apple is aware of has anyone been able to get theirs replaced or repaired without warranty coverage? Email support unavailable to me since warranty expired..... Please help!!

I'll have to check - I'm not in the office today. But when I sent the computer in for the logic board replacement they said it would run out in December. I purchased it in Nov 2004, and I thought I purchased the extended warranty - but I may be mistaken. The paper work is at my office and I'm working from home today on another computer.
I have called the local Apple repair store and he said it sounded like a power supply problem and it would probably be covered (he didn't explain why) but when I tried to email tech support here and used my serial number - Apple Care said it was not warranted.
Thanks for your help. I hope I have caught the problem before too much damage. I love Apple computers and that is all my business and I have ever owned. This is the first computer in 10 years in which we have had any problems - but because there have been so many in such a short amount of time - and it's "mine" - it's helpful to get information from someone who has had the same trouble.
Thanks again!

  • G500 seems to be overheating

Hello community, I've bought my LENOVO G500 laptop on autumn 2014 and in the latter days my notebook seems to be overheating. I've downloaded from web some soft, that calculates the temperature of CPU, motherboard and hard drive. It shows about 60 degree by celcius. Is that normal? I'm asking that, because, there is really hot under my left hand and it's becoming impossible to use the computer comfortably. I didn't "opened" the notebook and it didn't fail to the ground of harmed. My laptop's configuration: i3 3110M 8GB RAM Windows 8.1. Any suggestions, ideas? I appologize for my afwul english and thank you in advance.

    Hi Sir,
    Welcome to the Forums
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with system overheating in your Lenovo G500 laptop.
Try to clean the dust through dust removal application, go to energy manager and select maintenance guide and select dust removal application and check for the issue.
Also try to update the BIOS and check for the issue.

  • Whenever I try to sync my ipod touch, it doesn't work.  The computer seems to get hung.  What could be happening?

Whenever I try to sync my ipod touch, it doesn't work.  The computer seems to get hung during the back up stage.  It says it is backing up the ipod but nothing happens, for hours.  I eventually have to interrupt it and give up.

    I have the latest itunes.
    I tried resetting sync history.
    For this section:
If the issue persists, and you know all your contacts, calendars, bookmarks and notes are on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:
Remove all of the contact and calendar information from Outlook.
Select the device in iTunes and click the Info tab.
Scroll down to the Advanced section, and under "Replace information on this iPhone/iPad/iPod touch" make sure Contacts and Calendars are not selected.
    Click Apply.
This doesn't seem to make sense for my situation.  I don't sync anything between outlook and my ipod touch.
I have no other USB devices connected to my computer.
I have no other Windows users on my computer - only me and I am the administrator.  However on my diagnostic, it said this user is not the administrator.  Weird.
So I have tried to follow that you referred me to, but still I haven't got it working yet.  Do you have any further suggestions?

  • While in use, my Macbook Pro screen will go blank and the computer seems to freeze.

I have a 13 inch MBP running Maverick.  Starting a few days ago, it will occasionally (once or twice a day) go blank (as does my second screen which is hooked to it) and the computer seems frozen.  I've tried the key strokes to force quit but it does nothing. I am forced to hold down the power button and restart the computer.  VERY Annoying!  Anyone know a fix for this?  or what triggers it?

    jdbizzle,
have you tried resetting its System Management Controller, to see if that makes a difference?

  • Your computer seems to be offline. etc.etc.

I have downloaded the trial version of Muse and already bought a theme to try out. I was very excited to try it but now the excitement has now turned into utter frustration. I have been trying to get past this "Please connect to the Internet to continue. Your computer seems to be offline etc.etc..."
I see from other posts that this has been a problem for others. I am using a Mac (10.6.8) and have my firewall turned off. I use a router and turned the firewall for this off in the settings but to no avail. Although it makes me nervous to think of using software that requires this.
Can anyone offer a solution to this infuriating problem? Much appreciated if someone can.

I recommend you turn both firewalls back on. Normal firewall settings do not interfere with the type of communication Muse requires to download an update or validate your subscription.
Do you have any anti-virus or anti-malware software installed? If so, what?
How are you connected to the internet? Are you inside a corporate firewall, in addition to your machine's firewall and that of the local router?
Can you view the following URLs via your browser without any errors?
https://na1mbls.licenses.adobe.com - should load a page that's clearly from Adobe
https://ims-na1.adobelogin.com - should load a blank page with no errors

  • "Your computer seems to be offline" Question

I am getting the "Your computer seems to be offline...." box when I try to open the trial version of Muse. I have read other posts referring to this. Apparently it is caused by the firewall protection etc. I have mine turned off. I am using a mac OS 10.6.8. Can anyone please help? It is really frustrating. Thanks.

  • I had my MBP near two finger length magnets and someone told me that its not good for computers! Anyone's opinions on this cause my computer seems fine?

I had my MBP near two finger length magnets and someone told me that its not good for computers! Anyone's opinions on this cause my computer seems fine?

Don't worry about it.  The MBP has built-in magnets.  Does magsafe power connector ring a bell?  The motor inside of the hard drive has a magnet.
You would need an extremely powerful magnet to affect a hard drive.  I'm sure the electromagnet they use at a scrap yard to pick up a car could do it.
A long time ago I tried to erase some floppy diskettes by placing a magnet directly against the outer cover of the diskette.  It had no effect on the recorded data.

    If not:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Then:
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Transferring data from my time machine after system software update, but my computer seems to be stuck on "create your account"

Have just been uploading snow leopard as the pre step to getting lion and have been transferring data from my time machine, but my computer seems to be stuck on "create your account"

    I found a solution!
Perhaps this is just temporary, but I have my display up and working again.
Although the symptoms are different were a bit different, the solution here worked:
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/120259/grey-screen-after-login-blue-scr een-of-death-from-cmdr
As I was able to connect to my HD via an external monitor, in the finder, I went to:
    1. Macintosh HD --> System --> Library --> Extensions
    2. From there I moved all of the files that started with ADM and ATI (19 in total for me) to a folder on my desktop. (You will need to enter your admin password for this)
    3. Next was a restart.
    4. Then my display started working again.
    5. After that, I transferred the files back into my Extensions folder.
    6. I then did another restart with my fingers crossed and breath held. It worked.
Also... During the last few days of trying to find a fix, I restored a Mavericks backup to my computer away from Yosemite.
I'm very sure this problem occurred when I put my MBP to sleep, disconnected the power in its sleep, while something was connected to a USB port and unplugging the USB device (for me an iPhone charger) while the MBP was closed.
I hope this helps the next person.

  • My computer seems to want to shut down when I am using Powerpoint (mac) and go in to some sort of panic mode

Not sure what the problem is but my computer seems to shut down while I am using Microsoft Office, but particularly powerpoint. It goes into some kind of "panic" mode. The report shows a "interval since last panic report."
Is this a problem with too little memory? or some virus that has inflicted my computer?
    thanks,
    John

  • My macbook seems to be overheating

Sorry to bother you but just two days ago I recieved a Macbook Pro '13 inch as a present. I've been told how great these laptops are. However my macbook seems to overheat often. I've searched up a few discussions and its said to keep it on a flat surface, which I do and that happens to be my desk. It's got enough space to breath and its not surrounded by dust.
However I'm a person who likes to download alot and watch movies and it still overheats. I've been told about SMC but not quite sure about.
As a new apple user I'm confused, can you please help me out?

it's not overheating, macs just run hot..especially when watching movies or playing games.  Your mac would automatically shut down if it got to the point where it would get so hot it might cause damage.

  • After installing Leopard computer seems to be sleeping but fan is on

I have a 867 MHz G4 with 1.12 GB memory, so I upgraded to Leopard. When I tried to select the sleep mode for the computer, it seems like it's sleeping: the monitor goes black, iChat goes offline, but the fan remains on and the power light remains on instead of the pulsating sleep mode. Is the computer really sleeping? Or in half sleep mode? I then tried to wake the computer up, it does seem like it was waking up from sleep. Is this a bug? Or something I need to reset in my computer?

If the power light is pulsating then it is in sleep mode. If it isn't pulsating then its not in sleep mode.
I was having a similar problem and deleted the power management plist, then rebooted.
This plist is located in /library/preferences/systemconfiguration. It is called com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
