Computer set up for video capture

I believe there are special setting of the computer for video capture.  I have done these in the past but cannot remeber how or find any info.  One setting was to send the data form the camcorder straight to the hard disc.  Can anyone help me, please ?

If you're capturing from a tape-based camcorder, you should capture over FireWire.
For hard drive camcorders, you'll need to use the Media Downloader built into Premiere Elements to get the video files.
Current computers can usually capture with no special set-up. Although Vista can use a bit of tweaking, as you can see if you click on the FAQs listed to the right of this forum.
If you've got a second hard drive, you can get the most efficient capture by capturing to it rather than your C drive.

  • Good Premiere pro Cs5.5 Video Editing Computer Set Up For Under $3000

Hey everyone im hopeing to hear for Harm Millaard input on this and anyone elses who understands PC computers for video editing. I need to build a computer set up for my specific needs. I am a youtuber who makes videos for a living and I need a speedy computer for editing primarily in premiere pro CS5.5 and sometimes in After effects. I use magic bullet 2.0 color grading in almost all my videos so that slows my computer down alot. The current computer I have now shuts off when ever it runs to much stuff and gives me the BSOD so its extreemly fusterating because editing something small can take me all day because of the constent shutting off. Mostly does BSOD when I uses Magic Bullet 2.0 I shoot with DSLR footage but once in a while it will happen out of the blue when running alot of things but mostly when exporting. I need a list of specs that will all work together to give a perfect workflow for my needs and I also would like advice on what Raid because I dont fully understand it as well as what back up drives etc should I have. I plan of buying the specs and having someone build it for me and set up raid etc that knows how to do all that. In case some of you wonder what type of computer I have now these are the specs if you need more information on what I have in my computer ask exactly what info you want to me to tell you and ill look it up.
If you have advice on specs I dont have to re-buy that I could take out of this computer to save money then that would be better as well. I currently have no back up external drives as well so Idk what I should buy for that as well. Thank you all for your time a head of time!

Well!!!!.....where do I start??  You must spend some time here reading all the valuable info that has been presented and discussed many times here. Basically, PPro is a very demanding , PROFESSIONAL program that needs beefy and SPECIFIC hardware to run properly.
AMD CPU will not cut it.....it lacks the necessary instruction set that Intel has that apply to video processing.
You need a fast Intel i7 CPU for starters.
You do not mention video card.....NVidia CUDA card of over 1GB video memory is required to enable the "Mercury PlaybackEngine", which provides a TEN TIMES INCREASE  in rendering speed of previews.....not to mention accelerating the export process by handling some specific effects during export.
Some DSLR codecs,( like Canon MOVs) cause PPro....which is a 64bit program..... to open the 32 bit " Quick time Importer" process, ( as Quick Time is 32 bit), slowing down the process, even with good hardware. Editing highly compressed consumer codecs,( AVCHD,etc.) in real time ,then exporting can be very taxing on a computer, requiring top -notch components. Even if you do it the old way and transcode to a more edit friendly codec before editing.....you would then need a larger, faster disk system to handle the huge files at a high speed!!!
16GB system memory is OK for 5.5.....with 6 and later, 32GB is better.
Two separate hard drives are the required minimum for PPro......currently, the best performing and cheapest setup would be : C drive=  120GB quality SSD, D drive = 2x 7200 RPM HDDs in onboard RAID 0 for pagefile, previews, and all cache files.  E drive= same setup as "D", for media, project files, and export.  F drive =  large 7200 rpm disk for necessary backup of important files and backup of "D" drive. All drives should "indexing" and" compression" turned OFF,( under drive Properties window).
Less expensive would be just three separate 7200 RPM HDDs...that could be OK with just DSLR footage which is so compressed that it requires less actual MB/sec., unless you are using many tracks of video, upping the requirement needed.
Read the many posts and articles by Harm Millard and Bill Gehrke....they have contributed a tremendous wealth of knowledge and experience to the readers.....preventing many from making bad purchases and expensive mistakes when trying to construct a machine that will perform well....their website, PPBM5 is invaluable as it can show you all the video benchmark results of differently configured machines. It is a good guide as to what you may want to build,or, purchase.....Good Luck!!

ARD won't be as smooth as you think  over the Internet and be a security risk for your daughter.
Your best bet would be to install nannyware, then when she's asleep you can review the logs.

what is the best FC Pro Easy Set up for video shot with an iPhone 4?

There isn't one. You have to convert the media to one of the ProRes codecs, probably ProRes LT would work best. You need to do this in Compressor.
Easy setup isn't relevant as it's options are for tape based media, which this isn't.

    1) The N95 currently does NOT offer the facility to use the flash as a light for video capture.
    2) I don't understand your question
    3) Your GPS should work in Iran, although there may be an issue with the US (to which all GPS satellites belong to) not allowing Iran to use the satellites - not too sure about this bit.
You will need to download Iranian maps (if available) for the N95 - you can find the download page for Nokia Maps here :

  • CS4 MPEG 2 export settings for video captured by sony cybershot dsc-w35

    Hi,
I am trying to export a project (which contains video captured by my sony cybershot dsc-w35 digital camera) in MPEG 2 format (not sure if there is a better format I should be using, but I tried to do it in AVI before and the resulting file was way too large), and the resulting exported file always comes out with choppy video. The video capture settings for my cybershot camera (and thus the source video in my project) are:
         - VGA (640 x 480)
         - framerate: 25 fps
At the outset, I am using DV (only other option is HDV) as capture format, and I selected DV-PAL: Standard: 48 kHz as my Sequence preset. I have no idea if thi is the appropriate preset for me to be using, but it seems logical since its timebase is 25 fps and it says a 4:3 video ratio in the description, and almost every other preset seems to be intended for HD video and higher framrates or ratios, etc.
At the export stage, I select MPEG 2 format, and other than that I really have no idea what settings I should be using. I set the preset to Custom and under the Video section I switch the framerate to 25 and the pixel aspect ratio to 4:3. Everything else I pretty much leave the same.
Can anyone tell me why the export file always comes out choppy? (it is not choppy when I watch it in Premiere itself). I must be either using the wrong preset at the beginning or in the export stage (or both). The VGA capture setting of my camera seems like it might be an issue as none of the presets in Premiere appear to accomodate it. Any help is sincerely appreciated!

Thanks for the prompt response, Hunt.
The spec sheet you referred to is actually for the Sony cybershot dsc-w350, whereas my camera is the sony cybershot dsc-w35. that's probably the reason for the discrepancy. When looking at the properties of the source video I am using it says 25 fps, so does this mean I should be using a PAL preset in the export stage? I see what you mean about using a Desktop (custom) preset for the sequence preset, and for this I set the framerate to 25, frame width to 640 and height to 480 (to match my camera settings), but what should I set the pixel width to?
In the export stage, I select custom preset again, but within this there are lots of options (mostly under the Video tab) I am unsure about. Should I be using PAL instead of NTSC since I'm using a 25 fps framerate? I can also scroll video quality anywhere from 1 to 5, any ideas? I can also choose various pixel aspect ratios here and then there are a bunch of bitrate settings I am totally cluseless about. Also, under the Multiplexer tab, there is an option between constant and variable bitrate types, which should I use? Thanks again

This is a bit strange with apple servers today. For some strange reason, there seems to be a 5-10 min. delay in my post on this one thread only ....very weird.
Oh well, I'll post the info again in hope that it sticks ....

  • Ethernet disk for video capture

Is it possible to connect/mount an external network disk (LaCie's Ethernet Disk) directly to the ethernet port of an Intel iMac, without the use of an actual network/router? and if so, would this act as a reasonable drive for capturing DV and HDV video?
My plan is to use a 24" iMac as a completely stand alone, budget video editing station that only accessing the internet (via Airport) when requiring updates.

Whilst the theoretical speed of the Gigabit (1000Mbps) Ethernet port on the iMac is about that of the FW800 port I am sure that you will get better performance from a FW800 drive for video transfer due to the overheads involved in packetizing data to transfer over the 'network' to the disk.
FW800 can be had for a very reasonable price.

  • Use iPad to remotely control iphone 4s for video capture

I want to use iPad3 to monitor and activate an iPhone 4s video function.  Possible?

I found the solution - APP called AIR BEAM - about $4  app store iTunes.  Be sure to view all the setting choices for how you want to use it as there are a few you will not need and will disable.  I did not need sound or motion sensing but did want to store on iPAD (choose transmit feature as clip will be on iPhone otherwise).

  • Advice Needed for Video Capture Device

    Hi,
I'm looking to buy a USB (or Firewire if they exist) video capture device that can take S-Video and composite connections. Could someone recommend me best one under $150 that is compatible with Snow Leopard? Also, and more importantly, does anyone know if it is possible to capture the signal via Quicktime Pro or Final Cut Pro rather than bundled third party software.
    Thanks!

I used the predecessor to the Canopus ADVC55 to load VHS tapes into a mac.  As I recall I brought the firewire signal into iMovie (could have been Final Cut Pro too, as I had both on the system). Here are the specs:  http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc55 .     Also some comments on it at http://www.amazon.com/Hardware-ADVC-55-d-Converter-Ntsc/dp/B000HGVZG0/ref=sr_1_2 ?ie=UTF8&qid=1323954590&sr=8-2   Here's another source to buy it: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/312315-REG/Grass_Valley_602005_ADVC_55_Ana log_to_Digital.html .
They also make an ADVCmini, which I haven't used, which is probably less expensive, with specs at http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advcmini

  • What is the best set up for video editing?

What is the best computer? The best software? The best external storage? The best ram? 3D editing? Everything!!!!!!
Running full HD and 720p at 60 fps videos. Clips ranging from a few seconds to 10-30 minutes.
    Cost isn't an issue.
What is the best set up, not the most excessive. If it doesn't need to be there or it isn't greatly needed I would like to know. This is looking at the production aspects, not the camera and such. What is the best plug in for slow motion? Pros and Cons of the set up?
I would greatly appriciate everyones input in this. Thank you so much.

That is a hard question to answer.. Nothing is best for everyone... However if i am to generalize it I would put it this way.. If you want to cut everything from a short promos to hollywood pictures..
A high end windows pc (only cause mac pro hasn't been updated in ages)
Avid Media Composer with Nitrus DX
    Two monitors
    Broadcast monitor
    HD Deck
    pimping 5.1 speakers
    A good mixer
You are looking at over 70,000 or 80,000, could even approach even more.. HD decks run atleast 15k.
If price is not an issue then there you go....
However this is not realistic for most people nor best solution by no means... I run a macbook pro with Avid (as primary) Final Cut 7, Final Cut X (for practice, didn't have to use it for a job yet), and Premiere (just in case)
I am a final cut child who grew up on it and love it however everything I am doing in last few years is on AVID...
    Have a second monitor..
I am very portable and rest of the gear I usually get where ever I work at.. I am looking into getting a good broadcast monitor connected with AJA thunderbolt..
Like I said this is very open question, there is no (BEST) it all depends what you will be doing.. If you get AVID (which can do everything, however is cluncky as **** and counter intuitive) but you are only cutting wedding videos and short format stuff, it would be an overkill galore.. Just get FCP X in that case... Simple, easy, one app...
Be more specific and you will get clearer answers..
