Computer shut down and I lost files...HELP!

I was using my Powerbook on battery power and it said that I had about 20 minutes remaining. Suddenly my computer shut-off.
I connected the computer to the power source and when I started it back up my desktop was changed back to the default, the files were gone from my desktop, and everything was restored back to default settings. I lost all of my files.
The strange thing is that I had fast-user switching turned on with a guest log-in and that account was completely fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a project due on Monday and I need my files back. Thank you.

OK, my 'Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy' says "DON'T PANIC" on its first page. If you're near an Apple Store, take it to an Apple 'genius'; if you're at a university, take it to a very highly respected Unix administrator. Never take it a friend.
Your computer should run fine with the battery removed, using just the wall cord. Your guest account is fine because that is just a sequence of directories & files on your hard disk, placed elsewhere on the disk. It may be that a file or directory necessary to login to your account (a corrupted file in the desktop subdirectory, for example) has caused your Mac to abandon the boot, booting instead in 'safe mode', creating a new account (new files) placed on the disk after your guest's files. Remember, I'm only guessing. This would mean all your files are fine, but someone needs to either repair your disk, or move all the files they can to a new directory structure. To be safe, don't write to your disk.
If you have a hardware test CD and first Mac OS X DVD, you could 'repair your disk' and its 'permissions'; but I advise against this until the problem is correctly diagnosed. You don't want to lose your files. Instead of the above, if a friend's Mac and Firewire cable are available, you could boot as an administrator (modify Guest using your login password, for example) and click 'System Preferences > Startup Disk > Target Disk Mode > Restart'. If you connect the Firewire cable to your friend's computer, he or she will have access to all your files: possibly the ones you want. This is a benign procedure, not writing to your disk.
Copy these files from 'My Hard Disk > Users > My Name > Desktop' to your friend's computer, or anywhere you can finish your project. Copy all your Preferences, Keychain, &c (if you can) before taking your computer in for repair.
My next rule: the most fragile file on your computer is your 'Desktop'. Never, never, never save a file on it. MicroSoft, in its wisdom, overwrote any files stored on it when booting in 'safe' mode. (Note the quotes.) Surely Macs are more intelligent, and have a genuinely 'safe' mode. The rule: only aliases of files or folders should ever appear on a 'desktop'. Their loss is inconsequential.
Best of luck. Remember, some 'repairs' of defective disk blocks involve marking them unavailable, meaning your Desktop is unavailable to Apple's tools; or repairs involve local reformats (copying a good block over it), creating the same problem, or worse. That's why you need a seasoned Unix professional with fancy tools. (Ask around Math & Physics Departments; a good administrator is an old guy who speaks English, not a 'geek', and will be happy to help.) I wouldn't take a chance with anyone else.

Searching the forum before posting is a good idea. This subject has been covered ad nauseum
Bottom line: Uninstall the Google Maps update by going to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Maps and hitting the Uninstall Updates button.
There is a bug in the GPS driver.  Lenovo claims to be working on it.  Do not install the maps update until Lenovo fixes it.

  • My computer shut down and now my photos are missing

My computer shut down unexpectedly and now my photo library is empty in iPhoto.  I can't figure out how to recover the photos.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • When i take photos or videos on my ipod touch with the camera, then i plug it into the computer to sync, the computer shuts down and this blue screen comes up saying "an error has occured" and a heap of other stuff.

When i take a photo or a video using the camera on my ipod touch, the computer (windows xp) shuts down and a blue screen comes up saying "an error has occured" and a heap of oth stuff in white. It doesn't wipe the memory or anything off the ipod. Whenever i sync my ipod without photos or videos it works fine. It also doesn't mind me taking photos off itunes to put on the ipod. I have had a look around and a couple of people say reinstall itunes, but i don't know if i will lose all my songs and apps. Any suggestions of help?

Removing all Apple related software and reinstalling iTunes should bring all needed drivers back: Removing iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
Also check for new driver updates for Windows, especially if you have a webcam installed.
iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes. While it is highly unlikely that you will lose any contents of your iTunes Library when following these steps, it is always a good idea to ensure that your iTunes library is backed up. If you're unsure how to backup, see iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.

  • Computer shut down and restart

My HP Pavilion dv4 shuts down and restarts whenever it wants to.  The first warning is that my cd drive will engage then my screen goes black and white writing appears that says  "A problem has been detected with your computer.  Windows has shut down to prevent damage to your ......"  This is all I can read before it shuts down.  Even when the computer is in sleep mode this happens.  Help please.

    Hi @dis_computer ,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I hope you have a great experience with us.
I see that you are computer appears to be randomly shutting down. Without that error message it will be hard to determine the exact cause. If you can get that message that would be great. Even if you video the crash and then pause it when the error comes up.
We can try testing the hardware to see if that is causing the issue. Use the UEFI tools mentioned in this HP document Testing for Hardware Failures, run the System Test – Extensive Test to check all the major hardware components.
Do you notice if the computer is hot when it crashes. If so try cleaning the fan as mentioned in this HP link Reducing Heat Inside the PC to Prevent Overheating.
Also, can I get your product number so I know what we are working with.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue.

  • While working in iMovie, computer shut down and all imported clips from that project disappeared. The project still existed, with titles, but all video clips were gone from the movie as well as the computer library.

Clips were imported from SD card into iMovie project. While working on the project, computer shut down. When restarted, all clips from that event were no longer in the project, or in the computer library. Project existed, with titles, but blank spaces exist where clips had been.

OH MY GOD! This EXACT thing just happened to me! It didn't save my event and didn't show the date in the iMovie library but if I look under all projects, the project is there. Except that there are little blank place holders where all my clips were. Also the title of the project has a little yellow "!" symbol next to it which I can only assume means that the file is corrupted.
I can't believe it destroyed like 8 hours of work!
I have a 15" mid 2011 MBP and Mavericks OS.

  • Can receive mail, it takes a while. Will not send mail, tells me sending 1 of 1, but never sends. Try shutting down and restarting doesn't help. What do I do now?

Can receive mail, but it takes a little while. Try and send a email but it never sends, bottom left corner says sending 1 of 1 but never sends. I've shut down and restarted iPad but that doesn't help. What to do to correct this and what is the cause?

In that case your email provider's server is having difficulties to deliver the message to the recipients email provider server.
This has got nothing to do with Thunderbird.
There is little you can do though. You may have the recipient to check with his email provider if they have any issues.

  • Computer shuts down and starts up by itself. I have 27" mid-2011 model. Has been like this for 2 years now. The hard drive and the mother board has been replaced already. No help, the problem still returns.

    This morning it started again.
When I write the word "shut" to console it says:
    kernel[0] Previous shutdown cause: 0
locationd[55] locationd was started after an unclean shutdown
    kernel[0] Previous shutdown cause: -128
locationd[55] locationd was started after an unclean shutdown

Yosemite is installed. But the problem has happened with every operating systems.
Disk utility can't find any problems.
No usb or other devices are connected.
I deleted the file: com.apple.PowerManagement.plist (someone suggested that it may help)
I think it's not the matter of heat, because the problem occurs right away when starting my comp.
With a safe mode it sometimes stays up for hours. So could it be a problem with applications, rather than hardware?
    Help is highly appreciated!
    Thank you!

Thank you, I did ran etrecheck.
    Here's the result.
Now my computer did shuts down even in safe mode, sometimes in seconds.
So I have to keep this short.

  • HELP!  GB SHUT DOWN AND I LOST PROJECT!

Yes, i know...i should have saved...but i didnt! we were working on a song for 4 or 5 hours...GB froze up and shut down. i hit "reopen" when it asked and it came back up a brand new project and ours is no where to be found. any ideas?!?! i hope so!

it started out as just me and a friend messing around...me showing him some stuff on GB...so i never named it anything...it was just my song 4. i never saved it or anything (i know, i know) and so the name should have remained my song 4. i've opened up every my song 4 and they all only contain a piano like when you open up a new file. i think i'm just out of luck and learned a tough lesson to always save!

  • Computer Shutting Down and Magsafe not working?

Hey guys my computer is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) and i have had Magsafe issues with it since 6 months after i bought it. I had it sent in to apple and they said that they had replaced the magsafe within the computer (i am assuming that they replaced the magsafe board). Recently my computer has not been recognizing any connection when the magsafe is plugged in. No lights and the battery will not charge. It takes several tries +20 to get it to recognize the magsafe and start charging. The adapter is NOT the problem and neither is the battery. I have also already performed a System Management Controller reset (SMC) as the symptoms seemed to follow this common problem. This has not fixed it. Now my computer is shutting down randomly (it seems to do this when under light to medium cpu load or when moving) however, this is hard to tell as it has only happened three times. The computer only seems to shut down when the magsafe is connected and recognized (either red or green light). When it shuts down i can hear the HDD needle "park" rather abruptly/loud as an audible CLICK can be heard. Upon reboot, the computer will again refuse to recognize that the magsafe is plugged in. Again, no lights on the magsafe connector, and the battery will not charge. This issue could brick my macbook unless i fix it soon. Please any help??? I really hope that nothing is wrong with the logicboard as they can run upwards of $600 to replace. PLEASE HELP MEH!!!
Some additional background: I had sent in my macbook to apple 3 times already through futureshop while under warranty. The problem was that the magsafe only seemed to work while plugged in with the cord running away from the user. They sent it back twice while only swapping chargers... of which i knew there was no issue with. The same magsafe problem was there. The third time is when they finally swapped out the magsafe in the computer. My one year warranty is now over and it has been about 8 months since i got my computer back since being repaired last time. I have no applecare warranty. Is there any way that this could be fixed under warranty??? Is there some kind of apple replacement warranty if something has been sent in so many times with the same problem??? Thanks and sorry for so much writing...

    Hi there
I just posted a quite similar issue today.
My solution was to simply run Disc utility and see whether it finds any problems/errors. It did find an error and after booting to Recovery partition and running Disc utility from there, I let it repair the volume.
Until now, no more random crashes on moving.
    Hope this helps you too
    Hugs

  • Computer shuts down and restarts...

For the past several days, my computer has greeted me in the morning with a message saying... there was something wrong, computer had to shut down... it auto restarts. I send the report to Apple.
Why would a newer iMac shut down all the time like this? It makes me nervous/angry. I never happens when I'm using it, so I'm wondering if it's some energy saver setting that makes it crash?
Right now I'm repairing my Aperture library... AGAIN... probably because it doesn't like to be shut down like that.

Here is the panic... so much stuff is happening on the log. It is really interesting. Why is my computer doing so much... I have all these screensaver errors and other things. This was at 1:30 in the morning. Panic:
