Computer shut down with ipod Nano

When I am moving songs (from purchased folder to the ipod) my computer shuts down. No BSoD or anything -- just a total shut down. I've updated all the ipod and itunes sofware.
Also, when trying to register the ipods (there are 3 new ones in the house, and I'm having to do the same on all - and getting the same shut down results with all) I get all the way through the registration process, but then get an error message saying that it was unable to perform that function.
I'm using an old USB cord from a previous ipod -- could that be causing some of the problems?

Seriously? No one is having this issue? Hard to believe I'm the only one...
I had hopes last night that it was back to working again - I was able to download about 5 tunes and one video, and got 3 songs transferred from the "purchased" folder to the actual ipod, when it shut down yet again. I think I'm on try #22.
I found another post somewhere that talked about shutting down some of the start-up processes and such, which I did, but obviously to no avail.
ANY HELP on this would really be greatly appreciated.

please help me my computer shuts down with no error message. If it helps i am using windows XP.

Put a standard audio CD in your drive and take a look at what is listed by Windows Explorer. You should notice something familiar. Take the CD that iTunes created and put it in a standard CD player. Does it work?

  • Computer shuts down with charge on battery and no warning

without warning and plenty of charge on my battery my mac book pro shuts down? if it just sits there in sleep unplugged it seems to run fine, but if its unplugged and i try to use it (with a charged battery) it shuts down with out warning. started about 3 months ago. Is the battery just old..?

It is almost certainly a sign that your battery is dying, timskins.
The problem is that when batteries deteriorate their internal resistance increases and they are no longer able to deliver power when it is demanded, even though they still have the ability to store it. They may chug along providing low power for quite a bit longer, but when your computer suddenly needs a bit more (because of increased CPU or GPU demand, or the HD spinning up or whatever) it is unable to provide it and the computer shuts down unexpectedly.
Think of it like driving a car with a bad fuel pump. Your car is driving along a highway with a full tank of gas. Its running smoothly enough. You put your foot down to accelerate up a hill or overtake a another vehicle and the engine dies because the fuel pump can't meet the greater demand for gas. The tank is still pretty full but the fuel can't be pumped in fast enough to keep it running in a high demand situation, so it shuts down.
See the section dealing with increasing internal resistance in batteries at http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-31.htm for more about such things, or http://www.buchmann.ca/Chap9-page1.asp for a longer, more technical, account.
Once this starts happening the only options are to get a new battery or to avoid any work that makes much demand on power (like visiting a "Flash" based website or, when it gets bad enough, even spinning up the HD from a stationary situation.) Unfortunately even with light use the battery will soon reach a point where the regular peaks of CPU and HD use will become too much for it and you will suffer more and more unexpected shutdowns until the battery is replaced.
My suggestion would be that you take the battery to an AASP or Apple Store, where they can quickly "stress test" the battery for you to make certain that in your case this is, indeed, the problem.

  • Computer shuts down with power cord removed

my macbook pro is just over a year old and has been working fine until just recently when the battery stopped working.
the battery shows up as fully charged put as soon as the power cable is unplugged the computer shuts down immediately. i've reset the PRAM and SMC a few times but it hasnt helped at all. it seems that it might even have started with the new battery update that came out but i couldnt be sure.
any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

Retired Engineer, would please you post a cite for "+...purchased between February 2006 and April 2007, the warranty on the battery was extended to 2 years.+"?
My finaceè's MBP is just over a year old, and thus past warranty. He already received a new battery about 6 months into ownership via the first replacement program.
Now the replacement battery has crapped out as described by andrewdavidson and myriad others.
We took it to the authorized Apple dealer where it was purchased. They found that the replacement's serial number is covered in the new battery recall, but claim that Apple refused to replace the faulty battery this time as the MBP's original warranty was finished.
So an official cite for the extended battery warranty would be much appreciated.

  • Computer Shuts Down When iPod Is Connected

Every time I plug my iPod into my PC, the computer shuts down within 30 seconds. I have updated iTunes and that didn't work. Has anyone had this problem and/or how can I fix it so I can load new music into my iPod?

    Hey KSPinStripe,
First we'll gather more information about the computer. Disconnect all USB devices other than the keyboard an mouse. Open iTunes> Help> Run Diagnostics> iPod Diagnostics> Next, then copy and paste the results here.
Plug the iPod directly into the computer(the front or back of the computer not a hub, keyboard, or moniter.) Does it still power off? Does the computer show any error messages?

  • Computer shuts down with 55 minutes left...

My computer has started to behave strangely. At 22 months of age and little 'on-the-road' time, it is now shutting down although indicator shows battery life of 55 minutes (sometimes more, sometimes less). Is this a first warning the battery must be replaced? In addition, several of my programs unexpectedly shuts down for no reason. Got plenty of space on my harddrive and a ship-shape structure among my files. Am I facing the slow but certain death of the ol' Bookie?

    That's fine.
Your current full charge capacity is 4332 mAh. Assuming you have a 15" MBP, that's ~78% health (if you have a 17" MBP it's less). Apple spec is 80% health for 300 cycles; you have only 81 cycles.
So, I'd recommend a call to AppleCare or a visit to an Apple Store. There are known issues with some Apple notebook batteries, and warranty extension (to two years) described here:

  • Computer shuts down with restart message-iMac practically unusable

    Hey,
I have a problem with my iMac. Every time I login, I can browse the internet and use the computer fine, however it will show this gray screen with a large symbol of the power button and a message in about three different languages saying that I have to restart my computer. It does this very often now, in fact a lot of times I can't even login because the computer freezes right after I turn it on. I recently installed the new Leopard to see if maybe that would help fix the problem, but it didn't seem to make a difference. I'm not sure what to do at this point. My computer is basically unusable since it shuts down every 5 minutes, or even RIGHT after it has been restarted from a freeze.
When it freezes, it usually takes a while too. For example, the seconds on the clock stop, then I get the spinning color wheel. After a few more seconds or minutes, the gray screen with the power button shows and says to restart. Any ideas? I'm pretty sure I have the latest updates installed.
    Thanks in advance

Installing a new operating system to fix errors such as these usually does not fix such problems. New operating systems typically just add features. If you erase and installed the operating system, and you get a 4 language error message like this, you have a hardware issue. If you installed additional software, it is trickier to figure out if it is a hardware or software issue. This 4 language error is known as a kernel panic. Essentially what has happened is some driver, which is a communication peripheral communications software, or basic operating system command has become unusable due to data corruption or incompatibility. Tell us what you have connected to your Mac that is not factory standard, and what you have installed.

  • After plugging in a USB video capture devise, the computer shut down with a fatal error message.

I tried using system restore and continued to get fatal error messages.  Pressing escape, F8,F9,F10,F11,& F12 all resulted in fatal error messages.  One time the F10 woked and I pressed exit and save.  I can't get it back again.
I tried the recovery disk and after he sixth try I was able to get to the screen where I could restore the computer to the original factory settings.  The hard drive was reformatted and the software was reinstalled.  After restart I had an initial start up screen.  On the first screen all of the defaults were correct english, USA, etc.  I hit next. On this page I was to input My Name and the computer name.  My keyboard would not input anything, therefore the NEXT would not highlight and I couldn't go any further. I powered down and restarted 2 more times with the same result.  On the 4th try I was back to fatal errors and am stuck there.  Even the Recovery disk no longer works.

It could be that the database entries for that particular book are corrupted.  Apply the fix below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database

  • Computer Shuts Down With FireWire Attached

Just picked up my 13" MacBook Pro - Made mid 2009.
I picked up a FireWire adapter to go from the FW800 to FW400. Just tried it out for the first time and as soon as I plug the adapter into the computer it shutdown.
I don't have anything with FW800 to test but thought I'd see if this is a common problem? I do plan to take it into a Genius but thought I'd ask here.
    -Thanks

I just tested the adapter on my PowerBook G4 and it does the same thing.
I am assuming now that it is the adapter and not the computer(s).

  • Computer shuts down with Radeon 9700

    Hi all.
On most motherboards, the HALT ON ERROR section would allow you to specify what errors would cause your computer to shutdown if a system error occured.
My ATI RADEON 9700 is causing me a lot of grief. It's actually my second ATI 9700 Pro and my second KT4V mobo to fix this.   The cards' acting up again after 6 months of error-free play, until today.
What I find annoying is that HALT section 99.9% of bios has is missing from the KT4V bios setup.  I want to halt on NO errors (you know, where you can halt on: all but keyboard, etc).  Why is this missing from the BIOS settings? Is there something I can tweak to resolve this?
The 9700 Pro video card I have rocks, it's just too bad that it doesn't like this motherboard.
    Specs:
KT4V Mobo with 350W EVERMAX powersupply
    Athlon 2500+ XP CPU
    1.0Gb Micron DDR 2700
    XP Pro (fully updated)
Drivers fully updated with MSI Live Update 3

try other graphics board to your system, if it works, then an issue with compatibility with your board exist,  or try checking your power supply if it can really handle new types of graphic boards, if not buy a more powerful PSU with atleast 350watts up... or better yet update to newer bios version for your mobo or if anything fails,... pray!
    good day..!

  • Help with ipod and computer shut downs...please.

I've posted this in two other forums to no avail -- lots of views, but no help.
My family now has 3 ipods (we only had 1 before) and yesterday I was trying to get them all set up - updates on the actual ipod, and I've updated itunes to 7.5. There are two issues here:
    1) I am not able to register ANY of the ipods. I get all the way through the process to the very end and then it gives me an error message (after clicking the "No thanks" at the bottom of the page that asks if you want to download the videos) saying that the service couldn't be found? Or something like that. Ok, fine...I can handle not being able to register them for the time being.
    2) I could keep itunes on all day long, as long as the Ipod is NOT CONNECTED. As soon as I connect the ipod (any of the 3 new ones - they all do the same thing) - ok, maybe not as soon as, but shortly thereafter - my entire computer shuts down. No error message, no blue screen of death, no warning - it just shuts down. It might be after I move a song from the "purchased" folder to the actual ipod. Or, as happened yesterday, it's right smack in the middle of a download (happened with both videos AND songs) and then of course, I have to try and purchase it again. I'm not even sure if it took my money already, but if it did, I'm SOL because I paid, but don't have the video/song since it never finished downloading.
I've done everything that's been recommended to me - I disabled all my start up programs (except the windows ones) and that didn't resolve anything.
    My system is as follows:
Windows XP Home Edition (all updated except for microsoft office 2003)
    Service Pack 2
    AMD Athalon 64 3000+
    1.81 GHz
    2GB RAM
Not sure what else you need to know, to try and help me resolve this. Thanks for your time.
