Computer shuts down 5 seconds after mouse stops moving

As soon as the computer turns on it comes up with the shutdown/restart box. Have to press escape to cancel the shutdown. If the mouse is moving it is fine but as soon as it stops, 5 seconds later the box comes up and tries to restart. If I let it, it restarts and happens again.
Any ideas?

Try a SMC reset.

No combination of keys held down while powering up, nor unplugging from power source, will give me a screen, or utilities, or rebuild; the machine just shuts off thirty seconds after starting to power up.

  • I'm working on my iMac PowerMac8,2 PowerPC G5 (3.1) 2 GHz machine and have been having problems with the computer shutting down unpredictably. After the problem becoming impossible to work with, I shut the machine down. Now a little better, but reoccuring

I'm working with my iMac PPC G5, PowerMac8,2, 2 GHz machine running OS X 10.4.11, and was having a problem for a while with the machine shutting down unexpectedly. There was no clear pattern to when it was shutting down as far as I could tell. For a while, it would also not restart when buttoned on.
I set the machine aside for a while, probably a month or more, and then got it back out after its rustication. It started up and runs significantly better than it had been, but I have noticed it shutting down sometimes now again, though not as frequently as before. Sometimes it runs for a good long time between active work, sleep mode, and active work again. Once in a while it does shut down when no one is working on it (while asleep). But now it always restarts when buttoned on.
I've done the thorough vacuuming of any dust from the unit vents. I wonder if there's anything else I should try. In most other ways the machine works pretty well and has become the family desktop for basic uses, so I'd like to keep it running if I can. A little frustrating to not be able to upgrade all programs (iTunes) to useable versions, but that's another story....
I would appreciate any ideas about the shut down problem.

    Option 1
Reset your PRAM.  Press and hold down the Command Option P R keys while starting your computer.  You will hear the startup chime.  continue holding down those keys until you hear the startup chime a second time.  Release the keys.  If the computer restarts, you will need to reset your Date and Time.  It might be time to replace your PRAM battery.  The G5 iMacs require a 3 volt CR2032 lithium watch/camera battery like below:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/CR2032/
You can find these batteries at Walmart, Kmart, Target, most local drugstore chains, for between $3-$5, or at Radio Shack for $12-$20.
If you have any G5 iMac model EXCEPT the iSight version, you can probably do the battery install yourself.  Watch this video on upgrading your iMac's RAM to show you how to remove the back of your iMac, if you don't already know how:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/imac_g5_mem_m/
While you have the back off, use a can of compressed air to blow the dust out the vents at the bottom of the iMac, the fans, and anywhere else you can.  Also inspect the 28-30 capacitors on the logic board.  Look for dark spots, if they look puffy or swollen, or leaks.
    Option 2
Reset the SMC by removing all cables (USB, Firewire, Ethernet, Modem, Power cord) from the back of your computer.  Let it sit for one minute.  Press and hold the power on button on the back of the iMac while plugging in the power cord.  Release the power on button.  Count to five, the press the power on button again.
    Option 3
Place your original, came with the iMac when purchased install disk, into the slot on the iMac, press and hold the C key while pressing the power on button on the back of the computer.  (If you have upgraded your OS from when you purchased your iMac, example your iMac came with OS 10.3 installed, and you're now using OS 10.5, then use the OS 10.5 Retail Install disk that you had used to upgrade your OS instead of the original, came with the iMac disk.)
Continue holding the C key until you see the OS starting to load.  DO NOT do an OS installation.  At the top Menu bar, select Utilities or Utility, and pull down to Disk Utility.  On the left side of the window that opens, select your normal OS drive.  Click First Aid at the top middle of the window if it isn't already selected.  Click Repair Disk from the lower right area of the window.  When that is done, click Repair Permissions to the left of the Repair Disk button you clicked earlier.
When that is done, quit Disk Utility.  From the top Menu bar (I think its under Utilities) select the Start Up Manager, and choose your normal boot volume as the startup disk.  Restart the computer.  If successful, and you've rebooted from your normal startup disk, eject the install DVD/CD, and you're good to go.
    Good luck.

  • A135-S2266 shuts down 4 seconds after start

I have tried everything I know to get this machine to start. It had been dormant for about 8 months after shutting down suddenly while browsing the internet. I fully charged the battery and the front panel lights work properly. When I press the start button the fan comes on for about 4 seconds and then shuts down. No video either in the screen or an external monitor. I have tried replacing the memory and disconnecting the hard drive to no avail.I have tried startup on both battery power and external charger power.
    Any help will be appreciated.

Many items can cause this to occur.  Shutdown is the unit way of preventing further damage.  Feasible the hard drive is in failure mode. There maybe dust build up around the fan and exhaust ports needing cleaning, check the power adapter and cables for any signs of fraying/split aspects.  You mentioned 'replaced memory' feabile you are using an incompatible module not set to work with that unit. Resetting the hard drive you must ensure that the pin connectors are aligned completely and fully pushed in.  Just some areas for you to work on to see if they resolve the problem.

  • IPad 1 pre-installed applications shutting down just seconds after loading with no apparent reason

I've been using a second-hand iPad 1 running the highest available version of iOS for around a week now, but recently, when I wanted to use a preinstalled application they would load, but just around a second later I would be at the home screen again.
(I'm not really in the mood to explain deeper right now, I'll reply to any questions I'm asked...)

Is it just the pre-installed apps, or most all apps.
Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • Mail shuts down 10 seconds after opening.

I don't have any "to do's" in my calendar as stated in other discussion topics.
    I cleared my mail cache . . . cleared cookies . . . I just don't know what else to do.
I'm sure the switch to Leopard is causing the problem.

that may be an entirely different issue.
how many accounts do you have? and where are you trying to send from.
for each account you should have an outgoing server set up. See mail>preferences>accounts>account information, when clicking on outgoing mail server you will see a list of all the smtp servers you have, the first one being for the account that is highlighted in the left hand side column. what you could do is to click on the "edit server list" and then go to advanced, and then re-enter your password and click ok, see if that solves the issue. If it does not you may want to change the port, but before you do that you may want to browse this forum for your ISP to see what server port others use.
Furthermore, depending on where you are trying to send may make a difference. For example, if you are at home, with your own internet connection, you might send without a problem. But if you are at a friend's place on his/her internet connection you might not be able to send, as his/her ISP might prevent you from doing so, in which case you may need to add their smtp info to your outgoing server list.
Finally, it might just be a case of your ISP being temporarily down, and just being patient.
    hope this helps

  • Computer shuts down while updating Ipod?

    Hi
I have a Video Ipod and an old laptop, my problem is that my computer shuts down 2 minutes after I open Itunes.
My question is, whether the Ipod saves the little data that is transfered, when the transfer is abrubted by the computer shutting down?
(If it saves it I can keep on updating tiny bits of my music libary, otherwise I will stop wasting my time restarting the upload proces over and over again)
    Thanks

You might consider reposting this question in one of the iPod discussion forums here - which are for both Windows and Mac user problems.

Are you getting any sort of blue screen before the PC reboots? If so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x\[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
If the blue screen mentions a specific file (for example, “ati3duag.dll”), let us know what that is called too. (Exact spelling, please.)
Here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
If you're not seeing a blue screen (or if you’re just seeing a flash of a blue screen before the PC reboots), we can use the following technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.
With those settings in place, does a blue screen appear before the PC reboots?

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)
