THANKS IN ADVANCE!
There's your first and most important clue. What does the BSOD state is causing the problem? It should provide some clue as to what it is. See if BlueScreen View can provide some insight into the BSOD.

Computer shuts down spontaneously
Computer shuts down. Does not crash in use. Has only happened while in sleep mode overnight. On two occasions sleep light blinking, but computer shut down when mouse moved. Will not turn on again, unless power strip turned off then back on. Other items connected to power strip not affected. No other signs of power surge or voltage drop in house. Have not made any changes in power saving. Appears to be something in the computer. No abnormal fan noise or any other indication that it is overheating. Has not happened while in use. Suggestions?
May I add one more voice to the chorus?
My 1st Generation PPC G5, OS 10.5.6. 2GB Apple-installed RAM,on which the logic board was replaced under warranty (bad capacitors) several years ago, has begun shutting down spontaneously and the only way to restart it is to unplug it, wait about 20", plug it back in and then it will restart.
Assuming lighting hasn't struck twice and that it's not the logic board, I wonder if it is the power supply. I know very little about interpreting logs, but here is the take from my Systems Log just before it shut itself down at 18:59:05 this evening:

Do these entries perhaps suggest anything to anyone?
If it is the power supply, how much would it be to have it replaced by Apple at the local Apple Store? Anyone have a ballpark figure?
Many thanks,

When opening MacBok Pro lid when attached to AC power, the computer shuts down. This doesn't happen when it is using only battery power.

Battery dies/Computer shuts down at 60%
I have a MacBook Pro 4,1 2.4GHz. I am experiencing battery issues. I will have it plugged in until full charge, and then when the power is removed, the percentage depletes very quickly, and then at about 60%, the computer just shuts down.
Is this proof that I need a new battery, or are there steps I can take to test? I have reset the SMC. I searched around this forum, but do not see any obvious fixes.
Thanks in advance. This is almost exactly what is happening to me, except it doesn't seem my battery needs to be replaced. The computer shuts down without warning (not sleeps) around 60%. Do you know what I can do?

Computer shuts down after inactivity. Unable to revive.
Computer shuts down after few minutes of inactivity. Fans comes on and power light goes off. Unable to revive unless I "pull the plug" then do a normal reboot. This is something new started approx 3 months ago. I have toyed with the Energy Saver Preference, but only with the scheduling.
What iMac model is this? If it is an early iMac G5, it may be this issue:
http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
If you have a third party USB device hooked up when your machine goes asleep (into Energy Saver), it may affect the ability of the machine to wake up since USB goes into low power mode, and the two will be confused how to handle the wake up.
If it is an iMac that is over 4 years old, then it may need a new clock battery.
Check for dust in the power port and power cable. -
My computer shuts down when disconnected from power cord. I have to plug it back in to get it to start again. It seems to be more frequent when watching video. I have tried the SMC reset and will post my power stats below. Do I need a new battery or any other suggestions?

I'm running my macbook with some similar issue.. when running on batt, shuts down at random, can't find any pattern as yet.. I have found that it shuts down in Hardware test mode on batt as well.. I've done a good AHT, SMC, pram reset.. everything else is fine... just this shut-off thing... my batt is in perfectly good condition.. and plenty of charge.. I can't decharge the batt anyway, it won't run long enough unplugged!! I've thought that checking into Snow leopard might help.. but not seen anything about that yet.
Any info would be great
Thanks

Since upgrading to Yosemite my computer (iMac late 2012 model) closes down instead of going to sleep. When I restart I get a message saying "your computer shut down because of a problem". Does anyone have similar problem? What is the solution?
Sorry, I was acting like it was an email. See below:

My computer shut down on Friday night, and it was quite hot to the touch.
My computer shut down on its own Friday night and was quite hot to the touch. On Sunday afternoon I booted it up and got an error message that said the cooling fan was not functional. I am a computer technician, so I disassembled the laptop, and then plugged the ribbon cable back in so I could hit the power button and the fan was turning properly. The vents are not obstructed at all.
After I reassembled the laptop, I was able to power it up without the error message and it has been running ok, but I have been watching it closely, checking to make sure I hear the fan running every so often. So far so good.
I also adjusted the HP Cool Sense to maximum cooling.
Aside from perhaps applying some Arctic Silver between the heat sink and the processor, are there any other steps I might want to take before ordering a fan?
If I do need to order a new cooling fan, what part do I need to get?

The main steps to cooling are as you have already surmised - a decent application of thermal paste and a fan that works as it should.
The old 902 cooling fan error doesn't apply to this dv6-6000 series. Assuming your BIOS is up to date (nothing new since 9/2011), and your drivers are good, there is nothing else that should be related in that department.

Computer shuts down without going to sleep
hello,
i've had an increasingly swollen battery with a corresponding diminished life. to a point that it barely fit, lasted ten minutes on its own and when it became depleted, the macbook pro would just shut down without a warning.
so i bought a new one and although it lasted about 2h30 on its first cycle, when it displayed the low battery warning, the computer shut down without going to sleep...
tried resetting PRAM, and SMC to no avail.
i charged it back up a bit and it shut down again.
it's on its 3rd cycle and battery health already dropped from 100% to 94%.
anything i can do?
thanks...Are you sure it is shutting down and not going to sleep "permanently"? I say this because I have (and others) a somewhat similar problem but it's not shutting down, it sleeps forever:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1400708
Also, I was going to suggest maybe your battery has died out, but you said it is plugged in, so probably not your battery as the problem. -
Ok. so I updated to iOS 5. Downloaded it from iTunes and all. But in the middle of installing the iOS, i fell asleep. not knowing my computer was at a low battery charge my computer shut down. I did a DFU already and it worked but i'm not sure if it the os is complete. Is It??
Restore to factory settings. That will use the latest iOS and then restore from a backup.
Never, never, never attempt an update/upgrade on any portable computer device without plugging it into its AC charger. -
I plugged my iphone in to my laptop to update it and the computer shut down right at the end. My phone now has the itunes symbol and an arrow asking me to plug my phone into itunes (I assume the laptop). It's frozen like that even when switched off. If I plug the connection into the laptop it's not recognising it now. HELP!

Help with ipod and computer shut downs...please.
I've posted this in two other forums to no avail -- lots of views, but no help.
My family now has 3 ipods (we only had 1 before) and yesterday I was trying to get them all set up - updates on the actual ipod, and I've updated itunes to 7.5. There are two issues here:
1) I am not able to register ANY of the ipods. I get all the way through the process to the very end and then it gives me an error message (after clicking the "No thanks" at the bottom of the page that asks if you want to download the videos) saying that the service couldn't be found? Or something like that. Ok, fine...I can handle not being able to register them for the time being.
2) I could keep itunes on all day long, as long as the Ipod is NOT CONNECTED. As soon as I connect the ipod (any of the 3 new ones - they all do the same thing) - ok, maybe not as soon as, but shortly thereafter - my entire computer shuts down. No error message, no blue screen of death, no warning - it just shuts down. It might be after I move a song from the "purchased" folder to the actual ipod. Or, as happened yesterday, it's right smack in the middle of a download (happened with both videos AND songs) and then of course, I have to try and purchase it again. I'm not even sure if it took my money already, but if it did, I'm SOL because I paid, but don't have the video/song since it never finished downloading.
I've done everything that's been recommended to me - I disabled all my start up programs (except the windows ones) and that didn't resolve anything.
My system is as follows:
Windows XP Home Edition (all updated except for microsoft office 2003)
Service Pack 2
AMD Athalon 64 3000+
1.81 GHz
2GB RAM
Not sure what else you need to know, to try and help me resolve this. Thanks for your time.I've posted this in two other forums to no avail -- lots of views, but no help.

Computer shuts down when I click on the list or grid display button
I've uninstalled an reinstalled 3 times and instead of the computer shutting down when I start itunes as it was doing, it only does it when I click on the display as a list, grid or cover display button. However it seems to unistall some parts at the same time as I can't open it all afterwards (error message says its not installed). This started to occur after a couple of weeks of non use and when I last used it I purchased songs from itunes. I now have current version but didn't when it first statred to happen. Help!!
Okay ... we'd better have a closer look at the minidumps the PC has been producing to see if they can turn up any additional information on what we're dealling with here.
Open "My Computer", and see if you can find a directory called C:\Windows\Minidump. (That's where minidumps usually go on a PC, so long as the Systemroot hasn't been set to some other folder.)
If it's been collecting minidumps, there should be files in there with names like "Mini(number-numbers).dmp"
(If you have "Hide filename extensions for known file types" enabled in Windows, the ".dmp" extension may not appear on the dump files. The numbers in the file name will be different for each minidump, if minidumps are present.)
Once we've tracked down some minidumps, we can have a go at analysing them.
1. Download and install the Windows debugging tools from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx
2. Go to Start, All Programs, Debugging Tools For Windows, Windbg
Once you open Windbg, you will presented with a blank screen.
3. Click on "File > Symbol File Path". Here you will enter the symbols
path. Symbols are needed to effectively debug.
The path will be:
SRVc:symbolshttp://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
4. Enter in this path and click OK. Now, go to "File > Save Workspace"
so that your symbols path is saved for future use.
5. Go to "File > Open Crash Dump" and load the file.
(An "Open Crash Dump" screen will appear ... doubleclick "My Computer", doubleclick "Local Disk", doubleclick "Windows", doubleclick "Minidump", and doubleclick on one of the minidumps in there.)
You will/should get a message to save base workspace information. Choose no.
Now you will get a debugging screen. It takes a little bit to run it,
as the symbols have to be downloaded as they are needed.
After the "bugcheck analysis" part of the screen comes up, look for the component that seems to be causing the crash. (It'll say "Probably caused by" ...)
Let us know the precise name of the component. (Include any file name extensions like .dll or .sys.)
If you can, have a look at several of your crash dumps. Are all the crashes being caused by the same component? If not, could you let us know the names of the various components being cited in the various crash dumps?
