I've seen some of the threads regarding this but none of the fixes work for me.  I formatted my hard drive for reasons other than this so it has a fresh install of Windows XP Home Edition, the latest video drivers, and the latest Flash.  When my wife plays Cityville or Castleville, her computer shuts down.  I checked the system logs and nothing is there regarding the shutdown.  I tried changing the hardware exiliration setting and that didn't help.  We've tried the games on Firefox and IE 8 with the latest updates and it still doesn't work.  Any help will be appriciated.
The operating system, XP in this particular case, will shutdown the system to prevent damage to hardware if it encounters an instruction which can damage the system. It will usually logs an event which you can view by clicking Start, then in the Run field, type eventvwr.msc and click OK. Then open the both the "System" and "Application" submenus and look for events which are prefixed with a white X inside a red circle. The 6th column from the left will contain the Event ID which can be used to try and track down the source of the problem.

  • Computer shuts down while importing

This doesn’t happen with every song I try to import in iTunes, but let’s say with 2 out of 10 songs, while importing my computer simply shuts down. Just before it dies on me it says something like: Error, disk locked. I just can’t figure out what’s his problem.
    Hp Pavilion dv1000   Windows XP

Problem solved for me... I changed the place of my computer which seem to have helped. I think the problem was heat... too much heat and now I can import a full CD without my computer to shut down. If it is not heat, I read that it could be bad memory. if my computer shuts down again, I will check the memory of my computer.

  • Potential Args, Computer shutting down while playing a game

I've only had this mac for 5 months, but it keeps shutting down while I'm playing StarCraft II. It should be able to handle the game, but it keeps telling me to restart and I have no idea what the error says or means. I'm not sure what (4 potential args on stack) means. I'm not sure if it is a frame rate issue and how to fix it or change the frame rate if needed. Any help would be much appreciated. The error is below:

You are only just beginning to feel the pain of Starcraft II on your Mac. Have you seen this List of problems?
Blizzard created the junk, and it's up to them to properly patch it. The list of other well known and respected programs it's incompatible with (LittleSnitch, AppCleaner, FileVault, and PeerGuardian to name a few) doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy.
The page also mentions that your CPU can overheat, for whatever reason, and that means total failure for a laptop or early component damage to a motherboard. Gee, that sounds like something that shouldn't be run on a regular basis.

  • Computer shuts down while updating Ipod?

    Hi
I have a Video Ipod and an old laptop, my problem is that my computer shuts down 2 minutes after I open Itunes.
My question is, whether the Ipod saves the little data that is transfered, when the transfer is abrubted by the computer shutting down?
(If it saves it I can keep on updating tiny bits of my music libary, otherwise I will stop wasting my time restarting the upload proces over and over again)
    Thanks

You might consider reposting this question in one of the iPod discussion forums here - which are for both Windows and Mac user problems.

  • Computer shuts down while downloading Itunes

Every time I start to download the new version of Itunes it shuts down my computer. No blue screen or error messages, and my computer starts back up just fine. It also freezes on the last step while syncing my Iphone. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes numerous times and no changes. Please help this is becoming very anoying!

  • Computer shuts down while importing audio cds?

When I am on the 4th or 5th song, mu computer justs shuts down? Any ideas?
    Jenn

are you getting any sort of blue screen, Jenn? if so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

  • COMPUTER SHUTS DOWN WHILE CONVERTING

can anyone tell me what going on with my computer? I start converting songs on itunes and is suddenly shuts down..

I don't see that you have had a response to this. I had the same problem in a PC that I built for my sons and it was caused by memory that had gone bad. You can check this by searching and downloading memtest 86+ it is a simply program that tests memory. Follow the instructions from the memtest site on how to create a boot disk or flash drive. If it is memory it is a fairly simple fix.

Voltage at 24 pin and 8 pin connectors are ok and under the tolerance as I saw here http://pcsupport.about.com/od/insidethepc/a/power-supply-voltage-tolerance.htm
I will check the other rails.
Hmmm... starting to suspect that the cause is something else.
Missed the beeps in the past.
This mobo (z77a-g45) never emitted a single one.
Not even at startup when it was ok!
    Oh man!
The computer was running well and then suddenly screen went black, no disks activity, no keyboard response, no video, no reset switch working. Fans continue spinning.
Had to pull the plug to stop the fans. Then plug it again but no boot. Just cpu phase led 1 is lit, fans activity and nothing more. No welcome screen, no disks activity!
I will try to test the ram on another computer.
    Any other clues?

  • HELP! Computer shutting down while loading FL studio Plugins! High CPU load?!

Good day everyone. I am in dire need of some help concerning my Hp Pavilion p6-2330 . I am a producier and I use a programmed called FL studio.
I've never had this problem before but now it happens almost everytime. When I open a project with a lot of VST plug-ins or a new VST plug-in it just immeadiatly prompts windows "shutting down". I am not sure if its exclusive to FL studio or a High CPU load in general.
I've tried a lot. Replaced my PSU. Blow out the dust from my hardive throuroughly. I really doubt its a overheating problem because it only happens when opening a project with a lot of vst plugins or opening a new vst on top. and my CPU isnt hot
Is there a crash report i can look at to see the reason its shutting down? What can i do?!

    Hi,
The following link shows specs of your computer:
       http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c03499435
given "only happens when opening a project with a lot of vst plugins or opening a new vst on top." I think the cheapest option now is to increase RAM from 6GB to say 16GB (using information from the above link). Before goinng out to buy more RAM, you may want to insrease system page file first (similar for Windows 8.1):

  • Computer shuts down while starting up

I have a 400 MHz iMac, not sure what model exactly it is, but when I try to start it up, it turns on and makes the classic OS X starting up noise. The light on the power button turns on, the caps lock light on the keyboard flashes on, and you can hear the cd drive start to boot when all of a sudden the whole computer turns off.
I made sure the socket i was plugged into wasn't shorting out or anything, i also checked to make sure the ram was in there properly, but i can't think of anything else to check. So does anyone have any idea what may be happening?

    EthanD...
The symptoms you describe sounds like the Flyback went out (PAV Board). You seem to get past the POST (Power On Self Test), as the keyboard light flashes, just to loose it on monitor startup. That is the last item of the self-protect cycle and down it goes.
Unfortunately unless you know how to do the work, that is extremely dangerous, it is an expensive professional repair.

  • Computer shuts down while booting

I can't seem to find this exact problem, so here goes.
I have an iMac G5 (July 2005), the model right before they released the iSight model.  It has been working like a champ for 6 years now!  However, last night it just powered off for no reason.  You would hit the power, it would start booting, getting to different points in the boot sequence, then just power of.  So the next thing I did was take the back off and look at the LEDs.  LED1 was lit fine.  I then started the boot sequence.. LED2 came on fine.. then LED3 came on fine.. LED4 stayed off.. Then eventually the machine would just power off again, no explanation.
I've taken the power supply out, looked at all the capacitors, none are bulging or brown.. Nothing on the mainboard with any defects.. Both fans are dust free and spinning fine.  I've unhooked the harddrive and just tried booting from the CD, same power off at a random point.. The display looks fine.. gives me the apple logo.. spinning wheel.. sometimes it gets all the way to the login screen.. most of the time it doesn't.
Sounds to me like an overheating issue, although I can't figure out what could be overheating..cpu? graphics chip? power supply?
I've tried resetting the PRAM and the SMU, no changes.
Anyone have any ideas before I throw this in the trash and make my wife sad?
    Thanks!

You seem to have covered all the bases, the only thing I can think of is a faulty connection or the heat sink thermal paste has dried out.

  • Unknown error {-53} Computer shut down

My computer shuts down while updating my ipod. Gives me an unknown error {-53} and sends my computer all wonky. I then have to reboot and start the mess all over again. What to do?

    Hello Peter,
I already have the new BIOS you sent me.  The problem persists.  Toshiba has no Authorized Service for computers where I live (Brazil) as far as I can see on their site, which I can't understand since it is a global company.  So, I can not use my business computer now.  Apparently, I either have to ship it to the States (which will cost me more than the computer is worth, and I'm better off buying a new one of a brand that takes care of its customers globally), or I have to try and find someone here who thinks they might be able to discover the problem and fix it.  Any suggestions?

  • Computer shuts down when I click on the list or grid display button

I've uninstalled an reinstalled 3 times and instead of the computer shutting down when I start itunes as it was doing, it only does it when I click on the display as a list, grid or cover display button. However it seems to unistall some parts at the same time as I can't open it all afterwards (error message says its not installed). This started to occur after a couple of weeks of non use and when I last used it I purchased songs from itunes. I now have current version but didn't when it first statred to happen. Help!!

Okay ... we'd better have a closer look at the minidumps the PC has been producing to see if they can turn up any additional information on what we're dealling with here.
Open "My Computer", and see if you can find a directory called C:\Windows\Minidump. (That's where minidumps usually go on a PC, so long as the Systemroot hasn't been set to some other folder.)
If it's been collecting minidumps, there should be files in there with names like "Mini(number-numbers).dmp"
(If you have "Hide filename extensions for known file types" enabled in Windows, the ".dmp" extension may not appear on the dump files. The numbers in the file name will be different for each minidump, if minidumps are present.)
Once we've tracked down some minidumps, we can have a go at analysing them.
    1. Download and install the Windows debugging tools from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx
    2. Go to Start, All Programs, Debugging Tools For Windows, Windbg
Once you open Windbg, you will presented with a blank screen.
    3. Click on "File > Symbol File Path". Here you will enter the symbols
path. Symbols are needed to effectively debug.
    The path will be:
    SRVc:symbolshttp://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
    4. Enter in this path and click OK. Now, go to "File > Save Workspace"
so that your symbols path is saved for future use.
    5. Go to "File > Open Crash Dump" and load the file.
(An "Open Crash Dump" screen will appear ... doubleclick "My Computer", doubleclick "Local Disk", doubleclick "Windows", doubleclick "Minidump", and doubleclick on one of the minidumps in there.)
You will/should get a message to save base workspace information. Choose no.
Now you will get a debugging screen. It takes a little bit to run it,
as the symbols have to be downloaded as they are needed.
After the "bugcheck analysis" part of the screen comes up, look for the component that seems to be causing the crash. (It'll say "Probably caused by" ...)
Let us know the precise name of the component. (Include any file name extensions like .dll or .sys.)
If you can, have a look at several of your crash dumps. Are all the crashes being caused by the same component? If not, could you let us know the names of the various components being cited in the various crash dumps?
