Computer shuts itself down after about 30 seconds

Ive had my computer since 2008 and it has ran perfectly fine untill a few moths ago where the fan just started making loud noises and just generally over working even when the computer isnt hot. Suddenly a month or two ago it started shutting itself down after about 10 minutes and it just got progressivly worse and it wont even get too the start up screen. Is there any idea on what causes this or how i can fix it because I really dont have the money too purchase a new computer and it would save ALOT of hassle too get it repaired,
Thanks, Jack

This is usually a sign that your headphones are not plugged all the way in.  Make sure you cannot see any silver still showing from the headphone's plug.  It may require a little extra force to get the headphones to become fully inserted.  You should hear a sort of clicking noise indicating that they have been fully seated.
Also check the headphone port from a damage or debris.

  • Brand new pro shuts itself down after 30 seconds

    Help please!
I bought Mac Pro two months ago and have used it mainly for pages, internet browsing and watching movies from my external hard drive. Since I've had it, it has gone to sleep (black screen) after just a few minutes of not touching the keyboard and takes almost a minute to wake up again when i try to rouse it by touching a key or space bar or use mousepad - really annoying if writing or presenting a lecture!
Now, it shuts itself down about 30 seconds after switching it back on again. It opens up to a black screen with the Apple loading sign, the browser appears with 'chrome wasn't shut down properly' and then the computer switches itself off again.  I can't get it to stay on long enough to check any settings. It's only two months old and has maximum storage.
I didnt purchase any additional virus software - could it be a virus? Or just a faulty machine?
Also - I bought it in the US with extended warranty but no additional insurance.. I live in the uk but am currently in India and so cant take it to an apple store. Am I covered with warranty?
    Thanks.

    - could it be a virus?
    No.
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • TS1884 How do you cope with a system that shuts itself down after a safe boot progress bar is completed?

How do you resolve a problem with a system that shuts itself down after a safe reboot and when the progress bar is completed? Thanks.

Thanks for you response - the honest answer is I don't know, not being particularly IT literate. I do know however that I'm running Maverick if that is of any help?
I also tried the Command R route, along with holding some other keys as per the Apple troubleshooting guide, but no luck. My wife pointed out though that the system was running slowly over the last few days and we had quite a lot of the 'spinning beach ball' before being able to undertake tasks.
Lastly, I inserted my start up disk bit as the system is unable to start I'm now unable to retrieve it. All-in-all a real pain.
    Appreciate any advice. Many thanks.

  • Iphone 4 will not power up. shut itself down after recording video and attemptimg to send via mms.

Iphone 4 shut itself down about 10 hours ago after I recorded a new video and attempted to send the video via mms.  Tried many times to power up using standard power up procedures.  I noticed that it seemed to be getting hot.  I removed the protective cover and the actual phone was very warm.  even after 2 hours it appeared to be overheating.  has not been dropped or gotten wet.  any solutions?  has this happened to anyone else before?

Hmmm, press and hold (about 10sec) the Home and Power button until you see the Apple logo. That restarts your iPhone and should fix your problem.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS2 shuts itself down after printing..

Not sure whether I'm in the right place to post this..
In my workplace, we just bought some new iMacs for design class. They are a 2GHz with Intel Core Duo, and has 1GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM, and running Mac OSX 10.4.8.
The Photoshop CS2 is version 9.0
I've config-ed the five new iMacs so they can print to a printer, using IP printing. Problem is, most of the time after the students sends the document they want to print to the printer, Photoshop CS2 just shuts itself down. Then the dialog box saying 'the software just unexpectedly quit' appears.
It is confusing me, because our older iMacs (that's not an Intel-based) doesn't have this problem, at all.
is it something to do with CS2 compatibility with Intel-based Macs? or something else.. what needs to be done to stop this annoying problem?

  • Shutting itself down after short start up

Tiger 10.4.9... G5 iMac (non-intel)gray screen comes up for about 30 seconds then shuts down. Breaker was shut off without turning computer off which has caused this behavior.
In the past, I mounted the computer as a Target drive on the desktop of another computer, ran Disk Warrior on a partition and everything was fine.
This time, however it didn't work. I tried running the Disk Aid from the desktop of the other hd, but it couldn't complete due to some service error.
Is there a unix command for some type of repairing permissions I can try from a command line prompt with a Target drive?
    I wouldn't know the correct syntax/path.

  • My computer keeps shutting itself down

at around 2:40AM this mourning my computer shut itself down again
    this has happend several times
i had it running minimal power management  800mhz and all that
i have a 650watt power supply was cheap should still work dont really wanna open my case for the numbers, anyways it just sits there blinking the power light as if the power shut off on me or i tripped a breaker but my UPS wasnt goin off
i have corsair ram that doesnt have a problem with my system it was corsair value select pc3200
5 hard drives currently in the system
    7 fans
my signature will tell the rest, anyone have a clue what could be goin on

Random reboots are often indicators of memory instability.  I don't think overheating or power supply failure are to blame (although you should post the current over your PSU rails in your signature ... look on the side of your PSU).  However, due to the fact that you're running PC2700 RAM (DDR400 RAM often causes more instability than slower variants, such as your DDR333) you should perform some tests before we can be sure the RAM is to blame.
First, run Prime95's blend test.  Download the program, run it, then goto Advanced->Password and enter "9876" (without the quotes).  Then goto Advanced->Priority, and set it to 10.  Now select Options->Torture Test and select the "Blend" option.  Run the program uninterrupted and observe the results.  If your memory is unstable, it should result in an error within minutes (~10 minutes), although you could run it for longer if you feel so inclined.
Another memory check (which checks for physical errors in the RAM itself) is Memtest86.  You must create a bootable CD or floppy and then boot into the program in order to scan your memory.  It may seem like a pain, but in-Windows memory checks often report false positives because of background Operating System components messing with their processes.  Memtest used to have issues with 64 bit boards, but apparently that issue has been resolved.
If you find out that it is your memory that is causing your reboots, there are many steps you can take to eliminate the instability.

  • I have had my new 21 inch iMac for 2 weeks in that time my iMac has shut itself down by itself without any prompting from myself.  It goes to screen saver, then shut itself down can anyone provide an explanation for this occurrance

Hello, purchased my 21 inch imac 2 weeks ago within the last week I have notice my imac shuts itself down after a short period of time once the screen saver is activated.  Is there anybody out there who can through some light on this matter.  Is it a common occurance?  is there anything to worry about?  Should it happen at all?
    Tony

When you say it shuts down, do you mean it powers off, so that you have to reboot it to continue? Or does it merely sleep, or blank the screen?

  • Satellite P10-792 shuts itself down

    Hello,
my notebook (bought in October 2004) shuts itself down after 5 or 10 minutes because it's running too hot.
If I place my notebook on blocks (5 cm) and place a giant wind blower next to / under it, my notebook works perfect.
So I assume there is a problem with the cooling installation.
Also after 3 weeks one USB-connection was broken.
I brought back my notebook where I bought it and they send it forward to an official Toshiba repair service.
Now, I have to pay almost 900 euros to fix it.
I think this is a case of guarantee !!
I payed 1800 euros for it and not even a year later I have to pay so much again to make it work again ??
Is this the sort of guarantee Toshiba gives ?
I thought Toshiba was a brand with a good customer service... ?!
    greetings

    Hi Dorien,
The symptoms that you describe definitely indicate that your notebook is overheating. You will find many posts on these forums covering this topic. Briefly you need to remove the dust that is trapped between the cooling fans and the heat-sink. I would recommend a Vacuum cleaner hose placed over the air intake grilles. Alternatively you can remove the heat-sink and clear the debris manually (This will invalidate your warranty however).
As to your comments about your USB port, I also experienced this when both the ports on my A30 broke. I was advised that this is treated as accidental damage and is therefore not covered by the warranty. I opted to purchase a PCMCIA to USB adapter which was far cheaper than the cost of the repair.

Can anyone help me keep my iPod Nano from shutting itself down after 2-3 minutes on battery power?  It works fine when connected to a power source.

Try here to fix it.  I doubt that you will ever find out why it did that.

  • My computer shuts down after about two minutes of use or at startup. What is the problem?

My computer shuts down after about two minutes of use or at startup. What is the problem?
Yesterday I used it for about ten minutes.
Yesterday was the first time using it after about 5 days.

Could you tell me how to check my system log, and how to tell if it is the disk cache? I am pretty sure it is not the GPU as I was having the problem using a Quadro 4000 as well.
    Thanks!

  • G4 MDD FW800 starts up and shuts down after several seconds

    Hi all,
My G4 MDD FW800 DP.1,48 starts up and shuts down after about 20 seconds. I Have reset PMU and checked battery voltage, witch was OK. (also had it out for 30 minutes with no power connected etc.) I have video and also tried with NOTHING connected. But still it just powers down and failes to enter start up procedure.
Last time I had it running I pulled my iPod, beacause the computer did't see it, the next thing I saw on screen was the message to hold the power button for 5 to restart, after that I got the problem described above.
    Anybody?
    Thanks,
