Computer sleeps while iTunes is playing

Just like the title says, my Mac goes to sleep even when iTunes is playing.  This is pretty ludicrous.  Is there anyway to prevent this other than changing my power savings settings to never let my Mac go to sleep?  I don't want to do that, I want my computer to go to sleep when I am not using it.
This sure seems like a bug.  I am running the newest version of iTunes as well as Lion.  Thanks for all your help.
My current energy saver settings are:
Computer Sleep:  15 min
Display Sleep:  15 min
Put hard disks to sleep when possible - yes
wake for network access - yes
allow power button to put the computer to sleep - yes
start up automatically after a power failure - no
restart automaticall if the computer freezes - no
Again, I would rather not have to change these settings in order to keep iTunes playing.  Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
Jake

Jake, did you find any solution? I'm having exactly the same problem, though I just upgraded to OSX 10.8.2. I have basically all the same settings as you have. In fact I did try unchecking the "put hard disk to sleep whenever possible" for a while, but didn't help. Still goes to sleep after about 1 hour of otherwise inactivity (i.e only itunes playing).  This has got to be a bug, and seems to be affecting a lot of people.  I'll keep an eye on this topic.
Thanks.

How can I play music without it going to sleep and stopping?

Going to sleep means the screen is off so music should not stop when the screen turns off.
Any change after powering your iPhone off and on and/or a reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release?

  • Mac sleeping while iTunes is streaming videos

I recently noticed my mac goes to sleep while iTunes is streaming video to my AppleTV or my other Mac (using Home Sharing). Extremely annoying. It never did this before. What could cause this issue?
I have recently moved my entire library to an external disk. Can this be the issue? Maybe the disk spins down after a period of inactivity, and then MacOSX thinks the mac is inactive and goes to sleep.
Or might there be other causes?

  • Computer Sleeps While Syncing Photos

    Hi Guys,
    iPhone 3GS current software
    iTunes Current software
    Windows 7 64bit current updates
My computer is set to NEVER sleep regardless of battery power or plugged in.  If I select a folder to sync that is around 400+ images, once I hit the sync button iTunes will begin transferring and converting the images but will ALWAYS cause the computer to sleep while in the middle of the sync... really it seems that something at the end of the sync process is causing this.  It does this regardless if I am activly working on the computer.
If I select a folder with less images this does not happen.
Thanks for any help or ideas
    Cheers

  • OSX goes to sleep while VLC still playing

    Hi,
for some reason OSX seems to enter sleep mode even though VLC is still playing music. SO I keep finding myself haveing to get my computer out of sleep mode and restart playback. Very annoying... I might not have noticed it before, but I can't remember it doing this until today...
Is there any way to tell OSX not to enter sleep mode while VLC is playing?

  • While itunes is playing, an error message is showing up and it has to shut itunes down.

I'm having issues with my itunes on my Windows XP. I've never had this issue before.  While itunes is up and running or playing, 5-10 mins later, and error displays that they have to shut down my program. Not sure why.  I've uninstalled, repaired, re  installed, same issue.

How can I make a "Keyboard Lock" while iTunes or other apps are playing? They should work/play on, screen should still be on, only keyboard is (maybe Password-) locked.
    Thanx in adv, tttimo

  • Sleep while iTune is streaming ...

    Hi,
While looking to a movie streaming from iTunes on my Apple TV 2, the movie stopped. This seem to be related to the fact that my iMac goes to sleep while streaming to my Apple TV 2 ?
Shouldn't iTunes prevent the sleep process while streaming ? Does anyone have an idea what is not configured correctly ?
    Regards.

yes. the imac needs to stay awake.

no it wouldn't as itunes it not technically doing anything, it's the appletv that is reading from the itunes library. you will need to adjust your sleep settings in system preferences.

  • What video plays while iTunes Radio plays on Apple TV

The first several times I listened to iTunes Radio on my Apple TV, after a short delay (while the song info was displayed on the screen) the Apple "screensaver" played on the TV (this is a collection of mostly nature pictures that are "canned" on the Apple TV).  Today, while listening, I had my computer open and suddenly the pictures were from my own iPhoto library.  When I changed the iTunes Radio station, the pictures went back to the Apple TV canned ones, and I cannot get my pictures back.  Has anybody seen this behavior, and, if so, how do you get your iPhoto library pictures to reliably play?

For those of you interested, I did find the answer myself.  In iTunes TV/Settings/Screensaver, choose your computer, or, better yet, choose iCloud/my photos (or whatever it's called) and your pictures will play at the time set for the screensaver.

  • Automatic Log-out while iTunes is playing

For a long time neither I nor Apple technical representatives were able to figure out why my system would automatically log out after some time when its only activity was playing something in iTunes.
Finally I figured out that playing something in iTunes disables automatic sleep settings, but it does not disable automatic log-out in System Preferences > Security > "Log out after _ minutes of inactivity". In order to prevent automatic log-out, you have to disable this setting.
I wonder if this is an oversight in the iTunes program, because other programs (e.g. Pages, Numbers) cancel this automatic log-out if there is an unsaved document open. Having something playing in iTunes really should do this as well.

Thanks so much for posting this solution. Was driving me nuts. Using Airtunes to provide party music was consistently getting embarrassing just as we were sitting down to dinner and I had to excuse myself to get up to log-in on the computer again.... ridiculous... can't thank you enough for pointing to the solution.

  • Computer sleeps when iTune library is shared

    Hello:
Running a G5 and PowerBook on Airport Extreme Wireless network.
I use the G5 to make all my iTunes Store purchases and often like to share the library with the PowerBook so I can listen to tunes in the other room.
The G5, however, will go to sleep even though the music library is shared. While I want the G5 to go to sleep whenever possible, I would consider library sharing one of those times NOT to sleep. I don't want to change the sleep schedule on the G5, simply prevent it from sleeping when it knows a library is being shared.
Is there a way around this? I have searched the forums for an answer.
    Thanks,
    Mr. B.

Manage the settings in the Music tab of the device menu in iTunes and check the box for Sync Music and select the music you want transferred
    Hope that helps

  • Can the computer sleep while encoding?

I am currently in the process of making a DVD from iMovie using iDVD. While I knew it would take a long time to go through all the encoding, I didn't count on it lasting this long.
I have to pack up the computer and take it home, possibly before it finishes the process. My quesiton is this, can I close the lid on the computer while it is still encoding without having to start over? Can it sleep and pick back up where it left off, or better yet, can I change settings so it won't go to sleep when I close the lid? It has been going for about three hours now, I would really hate to have do it all over again.
Second question: I have made DVD's using iDVD before, and although they have been about the same length (actually with many more effects than this one), none of them has taken this long to encode. We have been sitting in the "encoding audio" phase for nearly all of the time this go 'round. I hear this is not uncommon, but how will I know if iDVD has frozen?
Thanks for any suggestions, I have about an hour before I have to close the lid....

    Len,
Something you do for while you're on the boat picking up your DVD-Rs?
    You got it!
.... or almost. I shoot underwater video and on the boatride home I sometimes have a lot of time (1.5-2 hrs). So one day I decided to try my luck - and it worked.
    OK, that's the last time.
Man, I sure hope so ....
I knew I should never have written that comment .... LOL.
Actually, I'm quite amazed that closing the lid would return you to the process...and finish successfully.
Have to add here: I only tried this when creating a disk image. But it always worked.

PS: I'm sitting on the boat while writing this .... Now THAT'S what I call Airport EXTREME!

  • IPod screen goes to sleep while playing

    Hello,
I have what I believe is either the 6th or 7th generation iPod 120gig. I just picked it up used and it is in good condition.
The problem I have is, while I have it playing on my Bose system, the songs play, but I can't see what song is actually playing like my 1st generation iPod does. This one, the screen goes to sleep while the songs play. is there a fix for this possibly? I have many songs and it's always nice to just look over and see what is playing.
    Thank you,
    JG

Your problem is that your iPod is not sensing that your headset is inserted. There is a pin inside the headphone port on the Nano that senses if it is inserted fully. If it does not sense anything, it will pause playback to save battery power when the screen dims. Here are the solutions:
Insert it fully. This will fix it for most of you. Press that thing in there all the way. You should feel and hear a full click when it is fully seated. If you can see ANY silver of the headset jack, it is not fully inserted.
Debris inside the headset port. If you are totally unable to push the headset jack all the way, the most likely problem is that you have crud inside your headphone jack. Try blowing it out or slapping it against your palm with the headset port facing your palm to try and get the stuff out. If you look into he jack with a light, you should be able to see to the bottom. The entire inside of the headset port is white, so if it looks dark at the bottom, that is the crud that is keeping your nano from working.
Headset jack or plug issue. If you cannot solve the problem with 1 or 2, then there is likely something physically wrong with either the headset jack on your headphones or the headset port on the nano.
If none of the above works, you need to take it to the Apple store or wherever you purchased it. I think they are still under warranty.

  • HT204291 Is it possibly to have iTunes music play out of both the computer and AppleTV while using Airplay Mirroring for the TV?

Is it possibly to have iTunes music play out of both the computer and Apple TV while simultaneously using Airplay Mirroring to view the computer screen on the TV? Whenever I try, by clicking on 'computer' radial button for volume in iTunes Airplay, the TV automatically reverts to the Apple TV screen. I usually end up using preferences to 'bring back' the audio to the computert while leaving the picture on the tv, but this means i have to suffer from the inferior sound quality of my Macbook internal speakers.

  • ITunes says computer is not authorized to play file, but it definitely is

    Hello.
I recently bought Ministry of Sound's 90s Anthems 2 on iTunes. All the files have downloaded, but certain ones won't play. When I try to click them, I get the error message: 'This computer is not authorized to play X. Would you like to authorize it?' See below.
The computer is authorized. I purchased this album for £9.99. My computer is the only authorized computer on my account. If I log into my account as it says in the error message, it tells me the computer is already authorized and STILL won't let me play the tracks. Can anyone help?
    Paul

Authorization should only be required to play "protected" media whereas the tracks should be classed as "purchased". It is likely that the tracks are corrupt. Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past music purchases (like the U.K.), delete the broken tracks from your iTunes library (but do not hide from iCloud), close and then reopen iTunes, go to the iTunes Store home page, click the Purchased link from the Quick Links section in the right-hand column, then select Music and Not on this computer. You should find download links for your tracks there.
While downloading click the small download activity widget underneath the search box and make sure Allow Simultaneous Downloads is unticked.
If the problem persists, or that facility is not yet available in your region, contact the iTunes Store support staff through the "Report a problem" links in your account history, or via Contact Support.
