Computer sometimes shuts down during boot, help please.

Hey guys,
My specs:
2500K @ 4.5 GHz 1.37V (12 Hours P95 stable + 10 IBT passes)
MSI Z77A-GD65
8GB DDR3-1600 Corsair Vengeance (2x4GB)
EVGA GTX680 Superclocked
Crucial M4 SSD 128GB
WD 1TB Caviar Blue
Seasonic X-650 PSU
The PC is roughly 1 year old and I built it.
Problem is, and this has been ongoing since I built it, sometimes, when I turn on the PC, it will start booting and then power itself off, after that it turns itself back on and Windows 7 loads, exactly what happens when you apple new OC settings for example.
There is never more than 1 shutdown when this happens and it never happens when the PC is on and working, just during boot.
I ruled out heating issues, everything is well ventilated in my Corsair 650D case, all fans are working and the CPU temps are good (Using Zalman CNPS10X cooler)
I think we can also rule out any PSU issues since I recently tested my PC with P95 again after updating my BIOS for more than 12 hours and it was rock solid. I've also never had a shutdown during gaming since I got the PC.
My Overclock is raw, I have disabled, EuP 2013, C1E, EIST, Overspeed Protection, Intel C-State.
Is there any BIOS setting which could be causing this? I noticed that there's a setting under EuP 2013 called "Restore after AC Power Loss" and you can choose Power Off/Power On/Last State. But I think it only related to occasions where the PC gets shut down due to a power outage?
I am inclined to think that this issue is more related to a MB BIOS setting than to the PSU since I never had any stability issues with the PC during OC testing or when gaming.
Which leaves me with the Power outlet. I am using an outlet splitter and currently there are 7 products connected to 1 socket:
1. PC
2. Yamaha RXV-471 Receiver
3. Morel Sub-8 Subwoofer
4. PS3 (Off 99% of the time)
5. Internet Modem/Router
6. TV Box
7. 42" LED TV Screen
The only thing I can think of is that maybe when booting up, not enough power is provided to the PSU and it turns off?
I have 1 other clear outlet next to the one being used and I'm fairly certain they both go to the same place in the panel because they are adjacent.
I can also try to replace the power cord, however, I replaced it once and I do recall it was happening prior to replacing the cord several months ago.
Any suggestions? Thanks

That's normal, the memory you have is 1333 with an overclock profile of 1600. (XMP) The double cold boot has been an issue for ages on the z77a-gd65 although I thought it was corrected by the latest bios's.
Oh so true. When it is really cold in the morning, not always, at first start of the machine, I will get a double boot behavior on a Z68 G3. No big deal, as xmad stated, this double boot behavior has been a trait of Intel for a long time. Usually disable of EuP 2013 cures it, but the OC and particular frequency combinations play a part in it, and mysteriously, cold mornings once in awhile.

I can only start my iBookG4 after deleting preferences. I have to go into single user mode to do so. If I don't go into single user mode, the computer shuts down during boot up. What might be the problem? How can I fix this?

I do not have a startup disk. I did try fsck (based on what I learned from your reply-thank you). This failed (fsck); here is the message:
    ** Checking catalog file.

I am sure this is an easy fix; I just have no clue how.

  • N200 shuts down during boot

    Dear Lenovo,
I have a problem with my N200 laptop. Notebook shuts down during boot. Sometimes it is immediately after "Lenovo screen", sometimes it is when Vista logo appears. I found out that this is always when notebook is "cold". It does't matter if I want to switch on my notebook or if I want to restore it from hibernation or sleep mode. Next thing is that it always crashes when fan starts work at full tilt (I checked the fan but it is clear). When notebook starts correctly then it works without problems. Usually I have to switch it on about three times then it is OK. This problem takes about 2 weeks. I have my laptop about 7 month. Do you have any ideas how to solve this problem?
And another thing - I forget to send registration card to Lenovo and now I am afraid that I will be without warranty. Can I send it still now?
Thank you for answer and sorry for my English.
    Gabi

Yes, problem with the video card sounds plausible! Any not so successful updates recently? It is sometimes to make a good uninstall, which is required to make a good install.
4in1 drivers should - esp. with W98 and ME - be installed while in SafeMode and with all autostarting programs disabled, for example Antivirus and utilities.
Else, since you have a damaged regedit, I would reinstall Windows. You might have done something for example an upgrade or new install the registry, not healthy, has made a note of. Some utilities also overwrite and change system files without good results.

  • HP Pavilion a1730n shuts down during boot

Have been using the Desktop Pavilion a1730n for several months after upgrading to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.  Without any warning signs, now the CPU shuts down during boot up.   When I shut the main power supply switch off and then turn it back on, then switch the CPU on with the front on/off button it gets 15-20 seconds into the bootup and then powers off spontaneously and completely.
If I try to start it immediately again without turning the main power supply switch off then on and only depress the front on/off switch, it starts to boot but only gets about 10 seconds (varies) in to the boot process before in shuts down.
What could this be?  the power supply? the mother board?
    ANY ideas would be appreciated.

Hi , Sounds like the power supply , when a load is put on the supply  it does not seem to be able to cope with the correct output . You can buy a new supply ( same watt output or better )eg; if you have a 400watt supply get 400watt or higher supply as replacment . Checkurtech

  • MacBook Air shuts down during boot

My Macbook Air (OS X Yosemite - Early 2014) automatically shuts down during boot, with the screen flashes during the loading bar at 40% and then shuts down. I've tried to reboot many times but it wouldn't get past the 40% on the loading bar.
I've also tried the following but none worked:
The Apple Hardware Test shows that "There may be an issue with a memory module." (PPM002, PPM003, PPM004) - though I've checked that the reference code and the definition doesn't match, as "There may be an issue with a memory module." should be PPM001, and PPM002-PPM015 should be "There may be an issue with the onboard memory.". I've sent this message to Apple and they'd only provided the option to visit their retail store.
Also, the Recovery Mode isn't much help either. As do not have a backup of my HD, I'm not able to restore from Time Machine Backup.
So, I've tried to reinstall OS X Yosemite, but it says "Unavailable to install OS X". A website online says that you can resolve this issue by correcting the date through terminal, but the basic menu bar won't appear, in which I'm not able to access Terminal during the Recovery Mode.
Therefore, I've also tried the Disk Utility, which it shows it can't be repaired, with the following messages: Invalid Node Structure (4, 57963), and 2 messages regarding the Invalid Extent Entry (4, 47013) and (4, 40808). The Single User Mode with the command fsck -fy yields the same message.
Is there any other options then to visit the Apple Retail Store?

      Invalid node structure
I'm pretty sure you need more then Disk Utility to repair the drive.

  • After installing Maverick on my iMac, the computer shuts down during boot up. Suggestion?

I installed on an iMac purchased new in January 2013 with full specs, the computer shuts down every time the desktop begins to load.  I've reinstalled Maverick twice from Restore screen, all to no avail.  I don't have any recent Time machine back ups to restore from because of external hard drive failure.  Have a few thousand dollars worth of software on the computer that won't be replaced if not deactivated, so would hate to lose it all, but most of my data is in Drop box. Any suggestions?

Have you tried booting into the Recovery HD, selecting Disk Utility>Macintosh HD>Repair Disk to see if any repairs are needed.? If anything gets fixed/altered click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu. To do this, restart holding down Command + r (more details here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 ).

  • Macbook Pro shuts down during boot

    Hi there,
Few days ago I spilled some beer on my 2 weeks old Macbook Pro... I immediately cleaned it, removed the battery and charger and left it to dry for 1.5 day.
After the drying period I tried to power up the machine, it did work but unfortutanely shut itself during the boot (the spinning wheel) and power button didn't respond again until I removed and re-connect my battery. Tried everything such as Nvram/Pram and SMC reset, single user thing, verbose mode, changing ram dimms but got nothing. It did eventually boot with hardware test but again got nothing as the test indicated that there weren't any problems.
It always shuts itself after "Checking catalog file" in the verbose mode.
(The machine shuts itself even when I try to boot it with os x installation disc so the only thing that I can reach is the hardware test.)
(To tell the truth I don't know if I succeeded creating a bootable installation disc as I did it under windows.. I'm hoping that I failed and that it can actually boot from dvd drive)
Did I just screwed my logic-board, if so how can I run all the tests.. Any suggestions?

Actually the computer is 2 weeks old, I spilled the beer 2 days ago.
Immediately disconnect all peripherals, power cord & remove the battery.  Turn the computer over with the lid partly open and the hinge facing upward to let the liquid drain.  Do not flop it over and lay it flat - you want to separate it from the moisture.  Place paper or cloth towels under the machine to sop up the mess.
After the computer disgorges whatever you spilled on it, don't turn it on for 72 hours or longer.  You want to computer to dry out completely before turning it on again.
Some users here swear by hairdryers.  Blow drying the innards may bake whatever was in the liquid onto delicate computer components.  Better to let the computer air dry.
Use plain tepid water to clean out the computer.  If you spilled iced beverage more than likely this ice fried the hot motherboard.
Sugary, acidic or milky drinks will almost always cause problems later on as the residue starts slowly corroding the computer innards.
Swab down any sticky parts with distilled water or denatured alcohol.
If none of the above works, you will need to take the computer to a repair shop.  Apple Care does not cover liquid or food damage.  Believe me, they can tell.  So the old "my computer stopped working" line is not going to work.
In order to not void your warranty any further, take it and let the staff clean it.  It's worth it for a 2 week old computer.   In the future, avoid eating and drinking while using your computer.  Will avoid future heartache and expense.

  • Vp6321 projector shuts down during boot

I have a vp6321 projector that has been working fine up untill yesterday. When I turn it on, it seems to boot as normal, but during the boot sequence (typically while counting down the boot screen) the lamp is shut off and both status indicator lamps blinks one before the projector shuts down. From the manual I see that this is caused by an internal error and that I should contact HP Support. Is there any way to fix this?
PS! I've been looking everywhere for somewhere to contact you without luck (I can't even find the product on the support site) - should it really be this hard to get hold of support?

I am having the same problem with two of four of my vp6320 projectors.
I tried changing both the color wheel and lamp with no success.
Customer support DOES NOT EXIST for this product anymore.
I am not certain that it is an over heating issue, in fact, I am not at all convinced of one ailment over another.  Sometimes the projector will turn on fine then shut down after a few minutes (followed by twin blinking lights, 3 seconds apart).  Other times the lamp will not fire and a broken lamp indicator is on.  Next I'll try again and it will flicker like mad and kill itself after about a minute.  Then a new set of failures different from the last error will occur.  I have no idea what to think.

  • Display shuts down during boot

I just purchased this imac 350Mhz for the kids. I got it all set up, hit the power switch on the keyboard or CRT, and hear the Apple chime at startup and the display comes up with a white screen with a thick dark black band at the bottom. After about 20 seconds, everything shuts down. This exact sequence happens every time I try to boot. Can anyone help on this? Is my OS incompatible with the system?
Here are the details on the system: iMac G3 350 MHz/128MB/7GB BLUEBERRY OS X 10.3.9
Thanks in advance for any help !!

  • OS X Yosemite shuts down during boot (which is very slow)

Here is the situation. After upgrading to Yosemite I noticed my boot time slowed down, same thing happened with Mavericks so I didn't think anything of it, figured my 2011 Macbook Pro was just showing its age. Anyway last night the battery died. I go to plug it in and reboot it and it is taking a very long time to boot up, the little status bar got about half way across then it just shut down. I have tried resetting the PRAM and I have also tried running the disk repair utility in recovery mode, disk repair says the disk is unrepairable. I don't know what happened to cause this and if this has happened to anyone else. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would like to avoid the cost of a new hard drive and or the time spent starting anew by wiping out this one but if that is what it comes down to then so be it. Anyway thank you for reading this long winded question and for any suggestions/help that is given.

Sounds like the hard drive is failing. Not that expensive to replace yourself.

  • Keeping computer from shutting down during movie

Believe it or not I just discovered free movies that play as soon as you click on them.  I love the ability but the computer keeps going to screen saver and eventually off till I move the mouse again.  Is there a setting for allowing movies to be viewed without changing the screen shut down time to indefinete or what ever its called. I think I have it set to sleep now at around 15 minutes or less.
    Larry

It's fine, all downloaded applications will show that 'warning'. Drag the application to your Applications Folder. The coffee cup icon will show up in your menu bar: click it and the icon goes dark, which means screen saving is off, click it again and it goes clear which means screen saving is on.
    It's that simple!

  • Mac Mini G4 shuts down during boot-up

    Hi All,
Just upgraded a G4 Mac Mini to Leopard, all was going fine until today. I just ran software update to install the very latest Security Update along with MobileMe and now the following happens: the machine starts to boot up as normal - grey screen, dark grey apple, progress spinner for about 30 seconds, then the whole thing just shuts down. Happens every time now.
I haven't yet had chance to boot from the Leopard DVD but are there any smart bods out there with a similar experience who can give me a clue as to what's happened...? I've just spent the last 24 hours getting Leopard and various bits of software installed!
    Thanks!
    JF

Sorry to hear about the loss of the iTunes library, though if you had another Mac available you might find the files are recoverable by getting the mini into firewire target disk mode. If Disk Utility found difficulty with the catalog rather than widespread data corruption, much of the data on the drive may be recoverable despite DU's inability to effect a repair.
I think you are right however to go the erase and install route to get the system back into service. Utilities such as Tech Tools and Disk Warrior can often effect repairs, but there is nothing as good as a reformat and reinstall in terms of reliability, and creating confidence in the system's on-going use.

  • Booting problem - computer shuts down during booting

I have run into a problem this morning after trying to download Yosemite. I have a Mid-2007 C2D iMac, that was running Mavericks very well this morning.
I tried to download the Yosemite update - but it kept getting an error message as it was trying to download. The computer became unresponsive, so I shut it down to try and reboot.
Now when I start my computer, I get a grey screen, with the Apple logo, then after a few seconds a spinning icon underneath, and then a few seconds under that a status bar. Once the status bar gets to about 25%, it goes away, and then the computer shuts itself down. Any ideas? Is it trying to install Yosemite, but can't find the files?
Any thoughts would be appreciated - thanks!

  • Km2m shuts down during boot after running via chipset driver install

Ive recently purchased a new computer with a km2m Combo mobo and am having trouble getting it properly configured and running.
I attempted to run the "One Touch Setup" on the drivers and utilities CD that was supplied with the system. Reeceived a message to first install the VIA Chipset drivers. I ran the chipset driver install and simply clicked NEXT on all the screens accepting the default options. The install appears to complete successfully and restarts the pc.
during restart the pc abruptly powers off!
I can reboot the system in safe mode.
I've run msconfig and disbabled everything and the system still powers of during a normal boot.
If I restore the registy (scanreg /restore) the system again boots properly.
What causes this anomaly and how do I resolve it? Is there some sort of hardware incompatibility? I'm stumped!!!

    OS = Windows Me
    PSU = +3.3/28a +5/40a +12/18a -12/1.0a -5/1.0a +5SB/3.0a
