Computer speed/fan problems in old age

Hi everyone. Puzzling over a persistent issue with my nearly 5-year old Powerbook G4 12" here. It's had a replacement logic board and hard drive 2 years ago just as Apple Care was about to run out, so those elements are fairly new. Specs: 1.5 ghz, OS X 10.5.8, memory 1.25 ghz.
Over the years it's become really SLOW. I'm not sure if this is related, but the fan seems to run almost constantly. Not every waking second, as some people report, but a WHOLE LOT. I take good care of this computer. I've bought it new batteries, kept the software fresh and clean, etc. I finally became frustrated with this persistent sluggishness that definitely wasn't there when it was new, and wiped the disc, and reinstalled OS X from scratch.
To my surprise, it's still just as slow! The OS X Welcome Video lagged a lot when playing. On a fresh install, on a wiped drive. That video has not lagged the first two or three times I reinstalled the OS over the years.
And it's sitting next to me right now, no programs running, cpu at around 11%, and the fan is going full blast. iStatPro reports rear main fan at 5056rpm, with temps at HD: 44°, CPU bottom: 44°, Bat: 32°, GPU: 51° (all in Celsius).
One of my initial instincts was "dust?" Could it be that over time the innards have become all clogged with dust and the fan has to work extra hard (and all the time) to keep the CPU cool enough? Is the CPU clocking down to avoid overheating? Do Apple CPUs do that?

Titaniumdoughnut:
The temperatures you report don't seem excessive, so I'm not sure what's with the fan. Dust is a possibility, but unless you operate in a very dusty environment it would be a bit unusual to have enough dust to affect the functioning of the computer. If you wish you can take the computer apart and wipe the dust off the fan with a clean, lint-free damp cloth. Do not use forced air, whether canned air or any other method, as that may force dust into more critical areas.
I know you have a new HDD, but it might be helpful to check its functioning, anyway. First, select the HDD icon on the desktop and Get Info (Command + I) and note and report the total capacity and available capacity.
Next, download and run SMART Utility 2.0.2
Third, launch the Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor) and check Page ins and Page outs as well as Swap used.

  • Speed fan problems ??

I have a TI4200-TD8x and I installed the software MSI3D! Turbo Exp. which monitors the fan speed and the temperature of the VGA. It keeps alerting me that the fan speed is low (it's at aproximately 1500rpm and the temperature keeps slightly rising. Does anyone know what the speed fan and temperature values should be. And if the values I´m getting are not what they should be , what can I do to fix this ???

I'm also having a problem with my ti4200.
I have the latest drivers from nvidia and i use "MSI,3D Turbo experience" software to check the temperature and the fans!
Everything runs fine, except the fact that my graphic card temperature rises a lot when i play games like Painkiller and so...
I can only play 30 min with my case closed...
I would like to know what should be the temperature of my ti4200?
The default alarm of MSI,3D Turbo experience is 58ºC, and my card is running 52 degrees without playing anything...

  • 945P Platinum and 530J P4 speed fan problem

    Hi,
i cant find 4pin selector in BIOS. The problem is, that CPU fan is going at 3115 rpm and rpm never goes lower. CPU temp is 32C. When temp is 40C, CPU fan goes 4500rpm. TOOO noisy. On 915P Platinum (with 530J but other orig. p4 cooler- i see differences) there is CPU fan very good, if CPU get loaded, fan speed goes up, but if you end work, CPU is in a minute at <2000rpm and I almost cant hear it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    P.S. Excuse my english

problem solved, i switched on Legend Thermal Control in BIOS...

  • Closing the lid ("hyper speed" fan problem)

Can anyone help me with a problem I have on my MBA?
When I close the lid my MBA does not go to sleep. The screen goes black (but the LEDs are on) and the fan goes into "hyperdrive" working at full speed. Nothing happens when I open the lid again. I have to push and hold the PWR-button until it turns off, and then power it up again.
If I just let it sit with the lid open until the powersettings kick in and the MBA goen into sleep and/or hibernation it all works just fine.
I`m running OSX Lion on an 2011 MBA (1.86 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo - 2 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3). Alle the latest updates. (I had the same problem before updating from Snow Leopard to Lion).
Hope anyone can help me with this

  • Notebook fan problem

    Hi,
I've had my laptop for 2 years now, my laptop: Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC, has a fan problem. My fan stopped working when I turn on my laptop. After using my laptop for a while (when it starts to turn overheat), my fan kicks in and only works for exactly one hour, after the hour, my fan turns off. While the fan is on, it cools down my laptop. My fan won't working again until a couple hours later or when I restart my laptop and wait for it to overheat again.
Can anyone help me with this problem?

If you just bought it and it's only a few months old then it should be covered for a replacement.  You shouldn't be forced to buy a new one, HP should give you one to make it right.
I hear you, if you are busy you don't have time but don't let them swindle you.  At least give the computer to someone who does have time and tell them to do a web chat the warranty people and explain that it runs at 98 C (or over 200 F) and that it needs to be replaced and could have burned you.  Do this before the warranty period is gone.  I think new computers come with a year warranty.
I say webchat because it is easier to keep a record of who you have spoken with and what they say in case they try to weasel out of replacing it.  If they give you any trouble about it, post the log or send it to me in a message and I will tell you how to deal with them.
For several months I had to send emails back and forth and go through three years of receipts to get them to honor a warranty and I saved the logs of our chats and I know every sneaky trick they use to try and deny people service.

    Hi

Someone have had this problem? Any solution?

    Hi,
This issue had nothing to do with heat at all in my case. What you need to do is goto device manager, and then go under Universal Serial Bus controllers. From there you want to goto the properties of each Hub and Root Hub and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the Power Management tab. Do this for all the hubs and root hubs.
I am not sure what causes this issue, but this has been a fix for us.
I made an account just to let you know! This issue took me a good week or two to narrow down.

Tool Tech Video ram says failed ....hardware test shows fan problems...in reference to error 4MOT/1/0000003:HDD
Anyone else experience this...and how is the fan a problems via hardware test but tool tech shows video ram failed?
Any feedback is appreciated.Computer only 6 weeks old.......:-(

My computer listed as having failed the VRAM test as well, but when I installed the Tech Tool software, it gave me the warning that the results of the test were not yet reliable for 10.5 and it might not test correctly. I've had none of the problems the the VRAM failure listed, and assume it's just an issue with the new OS and Tech Tool not being on the same page yet. PS: I love my Mac...but don't we all?

  • Mac Pro Fan Problem

Hi, I have been having some problems with a Mac Pro I have been working with. At the Start-up the Fan goes to top speed and once it logs-in the fan is still pretty loud. I've checking the Temperature of all the computer parts via a Temperature Diode, and its normal and not high. After searching the internet for hours looking for posts that were for the Mac Pro and not for the MacBook Pro (which comes up in about all the searches using the words Mac Pro Fan Problem) and I found some software all of which is not for Mac Pro's. Is there any application I can run do reduce the RPM of the Fans, Reset the Fan Speeds to only turn on when it get hot, or something along those lines.

Thats odd, seeing as Apple have it listed in the Support article:
To reset the SMC on a Mac Pro:
    1) From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
    2) Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    3) Wait at least fifteen seconds.
    4) Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
    5) Press the power button to start up your computer.
It does exactly the same thing as the SMC_RST button, simply by removing all power from the system. I would assume the reason for this would be that the SMC settings are stored in RAM, which is erased once the power is removed from the board, hence the minimum 15 secs wait which gives time for the capacitors in the power supply and system to discharge.
So yeah, it does do the trick, or has done for me in the past a few times.

  • G4 MDD Logic Board or fan problem ?

I recently posted thinking my problem was a dead battery.
I replaced the battery and still had the problem.
    here's what happens:
Once the G4 MDD is powered up and heats up, the fan comes on and stays on high speed. Eventually it sends the G4 into sleep mode.
Once this happens, I can't wake it up or power it down, unless I pull the power cord.
After replacing the battery, I reset the PRAM. no luck.
I also tried resetting the PMU, no luck.
I think there is something wrong with the logic board or the other fan (the one directed at the heat sync).
The heat sync is extremely hot, and the larger fan that is directed at the heat sync does not turn on.
I just found this article when I did a search for power mac G4 fan: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95038
in that article, it mentions 2 LED's that should be either both on or both off, and there is only one of these LED's that is lit.
<1. Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics): Check LEDs DS7 and DS8 on the logic board. In a working unit, these LEDs should be in sync with each other: both on or both off. If one LED is on and the other is off, there is a problem.>
any idea what this means ?
Is it a fan problem, or a logic board problem ?
This G4 was in storage for 5 months during a move, if that clues anyone in to what is going on.
thanks in advance for any ideas,
    Steve

    Hi
If it were me I start by assuming it's a simple problem with the fan as it would be the easiest and cheapest thing to replace. It should be spinning to expel the hot air around the heat sink fins out of the back of the case. I expect the computer reaches a certain temperature and goes into sleep mode automatically to prevent any permanent damage to the hardware.
Replacement instructions can be found here:
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g4mdd/g4mdd-lowerfan.pdf
I'd start by checking the fan's power connector is still fully seated and the fan isn't clogged up by dust etc. You could also try giving it a help in hand by giving it a spin with the point of a biro to see whether it's just sticking.
I'm not sure how relevant the article you linked is, as if refers to a much older model and I think it's only applicable if the computer is completely dead, i.e. no power and no fan movement.

  • Post-Gaming Fan Problem

Hey, I got the 15'' mbp in early June and I also happen to be a gamer. I have been playing WoW for 2 years off and on. I used to play on a basic $500 hp from 2008. When playing the last expansion (wrath of the lich king) the old computer's fan broke on two occasions and I ended up not being able to play. Then I looked into this new mbp because of the upgrade in graphics and read reviews that it would handle WoW easily. When playing WoW, I had very good graphics but the I could hear the fans working. Which is normal. I got a cooling fan (the iHome) just to help a bit. After a 2 months of playing I started hearing the same noises I heard on my old laptop. I could hear the fans pretty clearly even when using basic programs such as internet, openoffice, etc. I just downloaded smcfancontrol and it says my rpm is ~2000 and at ~150F. I was thinking about going into an apple store and having this laptop sent back to get the fans replaced/fixed. What is the actual problem?

Thanks, I happen to have applecare so I am going to call in when I can and see if the best thing to do is to just send the mbp in to have the fans replaced. It's just when I see my friends' mbp's, theirs are very silent even when streaming videos and my laptop gets extremely hot when streaming youtube videos. Do you think I'll be able to go back to playing WoW even with their new expansion? My laptop ran it amazingly except for the fan problem. Maybe some tips as to what I can do to help prolong my fan's/laptop's life? When I play WoW, I have the cooling fan hooked up and on and I have my laptop plugged into the power adapter. Then I place it on my lap while laying down. Any suggestions? Thanks so much for your help. Much appreciated!

  • Mid 2009 macbook pro battery is dead and fan is constantly ramped up (not due to heat). Would installing a new battery fix the fan problem?

Battery icon has an "x" over it and I need to have my laptop plugged in to be on. I've ordered a new battery to install, but I was wondering if it's possible that something else might be causing the fan to be on over drive constantly. I've tried resenting the SMC and the PRAM, but nothing has stopped the fans from running at higher than normal speeds.

If you've updated to Mavericks, you'll either need to use the original install DVD containing the AHT, or download the right one from Apple's servers, then replace the hidden /System/Library/CoreServices.diagnostics   folder.
I think that replacing the battery is likely to stop the fan problem anyway.
