Computer starts spontaneously after I shut down

After I shut down my computer it will start back up automatically. I've already gone through tech support and updated everything as well as gone into the BIOS and made changes. After doing this twice HP sent out a tech and replaced the motherboard and power supply. A week later it has started doing the exact same thing. I bought this computer a little over two months ago. It's an Elite Desktop model. Help please.

Hey jshimp,
I'm sorry you're having this type of issue so soon.
Has the Power button been looked at or replaced? Could it be getting stuck?
I would recommend speaking with tech support again and letting them know that the motherboard and power supply have already been replaced. Ask about if any exchange options are available considering the time period.

  • Keep getting a grey screen with circle with slash at start up after force shutting down

My MacBook is fairly new (purchased in August 2012) and today it was running fine and began freezing... When this has happened in the past I have just force shut downed it, and it started up normally. This time around when I went to start it up I got the apple logo on a grey screen followed by a circle with a horizontal slash (like a do not enter sign).... tried to safe boot it and I got another grey screen but now with a folder icon. Please help!!!

Whoooo - if you have no backups (what were you thinking?) then hang on if you can and some wise soul may come across and give us a solution.
What you need to do is to repair your drive from an external. What happens when you do a 'Command+R' upon restart after the chime?
I also clicked on the stuff on the right and it is really dated! But current Mavericks' users will surely come along and address the issue. Until it is solved, please don't erase the installation, since you do not have a backup!

  • Computer Keeps Running after Windows Shuts Down

I recently installed XP SP2 for the first time.  Now, when I shut down Windows, the OS shuts down fine and the screen goes blank, but the computer itself keeps running for about 15 seconds.  This has never happened before.  Any ideas?

Try a more powerful power supply.  It normal rated load on the 12v rail is only 4.5 amps with a max of 16.

There are probably a lot of items being started when the computer does. You can open up "System Preferences", click on "Users & Groups", and then click on "Login Items" for a particular user. If you don't see anything suspicious, or anything that can cause long startup issues, navigate to (by pressing shift-command-G when in Finder, and yes, the ~ is necessary):
~/Library/LaunchAgents (can also get here by typing /Users/<account name>/Library)
    /Library/LaunchAgents
    /Library/LanuchDaemons
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/LaunchAgents
    /System/LaunchDaemons
    /System/StartupItems
If you don't see anything in there that would cause the "long" boot up time, then it is most likely something else (obviously...). If you have FileVault2 enabled, causing your entire hard drive to be enabled for Full Disk Encryption, that might increase the boot up time by a small amount. If you feel that your computer still is booting up way too slowly for your liking, then there could be some helpful indications during bootup. The next time you startup your mac, hold down the Command+V buttons on your keyboard, and you will see lines of text rather than your usual grey screen with the Apple logo

After having shut down after installing updates, when I restarted and tried to open a word doc, it started opening ALL the word docs and the only way I could stop it was by"force quit"  . This is REALLY annoying!!

May be it is the Resume feature.
System Preference > General > Number of recent items
Uncheck the box next to      "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".
    Best.

  • Persistent USB Arch installation fails to boot after first shut down

    Hey all,
I've recently installed Arch on a 32-GB USB flash drive (with the help of the wiki, of course).  I have some experience installing arch on my computers, so the process went relatively smoothly.  As some background info, I AM using UUIDs in both the bootloader and the fstab file, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Anyways, the problem itself: I have arch installed and ready to go, and it boots up fine (the first time).  The thing is, after I shut down, if I try to boot the USB drive again, it simply hangs there-- no boot.  What's weirder is not only does it not boot, but it also freezes the host computer at that point in the boot cycle.  I mean, everything will be frozen up at the startup BIOS/splash whatever screen when the USB key is in, but once I take it out the computer will boot up regularly.  It's really strange.
If I reinstall the bootloader on the USB drive then everything works again (that is, until I reboot).
Is the bootloader somehow getting corrupted while shutting down?  I have tried using both GRUB and SYSLINUX (not at the same time of course) but they both behave the same.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time,
    Ushahin

Here you need to set the right hooks if the root is on a USB drive, if you use RAID, LVM, or if /usr is on a separate partition.
Did you remember to do this?
If not, mount the partition(s) starting with the root partition first, chroot into it, edit that file and re-generate the initramfs. Then reboot with the reboot command, don't forcefully shut it down using the power button or something like that.
It could also be a BIOS issue. Restore its defaults, set "Removable Dev." first, "CD-ROM" second (if you have an optical drive), "Internal Storage" third. Then select the USB stick as the first to boot in the boot priority screen.

  • MacBook Pro 15" won't turn on after a shut down.

My MacBook Pro 15" late 2008 mavericks won't turn on after a shut down. Tried SMC reset, plugged and unplugged charger multiple times as well as installing the battery. It has started that after a while I have replaced my old battery with a new one, upgraded to Mavericks and increased my memory to 4GB. In the beginning after I would install every time the battery ,it' would turn on after 8-10 tries. Today it's completely unresponsive . Tested different outlets, with and without battery, nothing worked. I also heard that some other people have this issue once they have updated their operating system from  10.5.8 to Mavericks. Is that the problem.? Has anyone found a solution to this?

  • IMac Starts Up And Then Shuts Down ...

    Hi ...
I'm hoping that someone out there can help me ...
I purchased an Apple 24" iMac about 3 years ago ...
It was pretty much working perfectly until 2 days ago ...
The last time it was fully operational I'd just switched the computer on for the day - opened iTunes - and was using the FINDER to find approx 600 MP3s to add to iTunes ...
Whilst the FINDER was searching for the MP3s the iMac froze ...
So I decided to RESTART the computer by holding the POWER BUTTON to shut the computer down ...
I gave the computer around 10 secs to shut down ...
Then when I pressed the POWER BUTTON to START the iMac again it reached the grey screen with the Apple logo and the rotating dial ...
The computer then started emitting an audible clicking sound as if it was searching for / organising data ...
The sound eventually stopped but the iMac froze on the grey screen ...
So again I decided to RESTART the computer by holding the POWER BUTTON to shut the computer down ...
I gave the computer around 10 secs to shut down ...
Then when I pressed the POWER BUTTON to START the iMac again it reached the grey screen with the Apple logo and the rotating dial ...
    And froze again ...
I followed the instructions contained within the EVERYTHING MAC booklet ...
I tried holding the OPTION key whilst starting up ...
I tried holding down the COMMAND OPTION P and R keys to reset the PARAMETER RAM ...
I also tried holding down the D key whilst starting up to test the Apple Hardware ...
My iMac passed the Apple Hardware Test ...
However every time I now try to start the iMac it reaches the grey screen (Apple logo / rotating dial) and then shuts down after approx 1 minute ...
Is this simply a boot problem ? ...
What alternatives do I have to boot up / correct the problem ? ...
I'd be ever so grateful if someone out there could help walk me through alternative actions to take ...
    Kind regards ...

    Hello
Try target disk mode see if your mac shut down from this way , to do that
hold hon at start up "T" on key board just after startup sound until screen show a firewire logo as screen saver
    and wait ..
if by chance you have a second mac you can use a fire wire cable to link it , in that way your mac is like an external hard drive , most easy way to recover data from it
Try start in single user mode ,  use COMANDE - S at start up
Try start in safe mode , use SHIFT key at start up
if in all case you mac shut down after 1 or 2 min of use , certenly mean a mother board and or powersupply problem
be sure to have perform SMC and PRAM reset at least 3 times each
    HTH

  • Why does the EEvents message come up every time the computer is opened after being shut off?

Why does the EEvents message come up every time the computer is opened after being shut off?

You need to check the software you run.
Some officially supported and sold Mac versions of software use Wine for porting in some fashion or another.  If some program you are running is spawning these Wine processes, its probably buggy and not shutting down correctly.
How to figure out which are Wine and which are not...?
Well if its a Cider ported game, you just see if there is a Cider logo on the game.
If its Wineskin ported, theres no super easy way to tell, depending on how much its been modified, but you can look inside the app (right click and "Show Package Contents") and go to Contents/MacOS and see if Wineskin executable is in there.  Unless its a very old version of Wineskin it shouldn't be able to hang like that without major issues int he Windows software running in it, and I don't know any any company would release it if it was that buggy.
If its WineBottler Ported, you'll notice quickly because it launches X11 and runs the windows under X11... of course not all X11 apps are Wine, but if you have a program that launches and runs in X11.app then you can look inside it at Contents/MacOS to see if its Wine related.
It could also be Crossover, or a Crossover port of software... you'd have to dig around inside of its app too to see if it looked like one of those.

  • Portege M300 hangs after "Windows shuts down" comes up on the screen

The computer hangs after "Windows shuts down" comes up on the screen. The same happens in hibernation mode. I have to turn off the computer by holding the on/off button.
I have updated my bios, installed all windows updates that are available and done a numer of other things. It startd just out of the blue. Any ideas?

    Hi
Does it happen after the OS installation from the Toshiba recovery CD???
Did you install any further programs???
I have noticed a similar freezing on my notebook. Mostly it happened because the background process did not close and therefore the notebook could not force the shut down. In my case it was a adobe acrobat reader which could not close.
I think you should defragment you HDD and use the CCleaner freeware application.
This program cleans program errors and corrects the registry entries.
Try it! Maybe its not a serious issue!

My screen is really faded, after it shut down (overheated I think) after being on for about an hour.  Its kind of like how you see the world, when you get out of a pool that has too much chlorine.
I have tried shutting down, and re-starting. I have re-calibrated.
    I have tried changing brightness.
    Nothing works so far.
    HELP

Wait a few hours before restarting it, also post actual temps.  You can download iStatPro for free, once you have restarted, download it and post the actual temps.
Also try resettng the PRAM and SMC, do each multiple times. If you don't know how please click Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets

  • USB external HD does not turn off after system shut down

This is not a new issue in Leopard. I had this issue also in Tiger but I never bothered to ask whether there may be a solution to this issue.
I have firewire as well as USB HDs attached to my iMac. If I put my computer to sleep both the firewire and the USB HDs turn themselves off. The HDs come back to live after I reawake the Mac. But if I turn off the iMac then only the firewire HDs turn themselves off. The USB HDs remain turned on.
Is there a setting somewhere that can be changed so that the USB external HDs turn themselves off after system shut down?

Since the issue is not a Leopard issue, and maybe not even a Tiger issue, you might check with the drive manufacturer for some assistance.
Does the drive turn off when you eject it and then pull out the USB plug? That's important.
