Computer suddenly shuts down! No "low battery" message HELP!

Ok, about two weeks ago I plugged by computer into a desk lamp at a hotel. Appearately there was a voltage issue and I heard a pop then my computer blacked out! I had to restart and when I did all my "stuff" was gone! I was able to recover my documents, etc but it was a little scary! Ever since then I have to keep my power cord plugged in. I can unplug it but it will calculate my battery life as 1 hour then will completely shut down in the next 10-20 minutes. And when I plug it back in I have to completely restart. What do I do now?

I just pasted all the info here just in case...

  • Macbook shuts down when low battery instead of going to sleep

    Hi
Well basically my laptop shuts itself down instead of going to sleep when my battery gets low. I also do not get the low battery message. My macbook will usually shut down when it gets to approximately 6% of battery life. What should I do?
    Thanks
    Sarah.

Have you done the battery update? You might also try to reset the SMC and/or PRAM.
If it doesn't work you may need a new battery. The original core duo batteries have had an extra year added to their warranty so even if your computer is not covered the battery is. My MacBook was doing the same thing except at 28%. Apple replaced my battery and it works fine now.
If you call Apple be polite but firm some people have had trouble from some of the reps. Mine went smoothly I had a new battery in 3 days.

  • MacBook shuts down after low battery warning

    Hi,
up until recently my macbook's battery has been working just fine. but then lately i noticed that a few minutes after it displays the low battery warning it shuts down by itself.
before, when the low battery warning would display i could still continue working on my macbook for several minutes until it goes to sleep -- only then would i connect it to the power cord.
unlike the other posts (concerning batteries) that i've read, i have no problems turning my macbook on/off before or after this event has occured. neither does it shut itself down when the battery is halfway. my problem really only happens after the low battery warning has been displayed.
i wanted to calibrate my battery but then that would require my macbook to go to sleep once it reaches a battery level of less than 5%-10% -- mine just shuts down completely.
is this shutting down thing a substitution mechanism to save the laptop's memory -- instead of going to sleep, it'd just shut down?? how can i fix this?
thanks in advance for the help.
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   512MB, 2GHz Intel Core Duo

For what it is worth, I now have the same issue. Only I don't even see the low battery warning, it gets to 15% or 10% and bang, no power. This is not good, by the way and is bound to corrupt something in the system as OSX requires some house keeping when you shut down the computer properly. This instant off is not a proper shut down. I took my MacBook in and they wouldnt simply replace the battery, they want to keep the computer and give it back to me in a few days. I rely on this puter for work 5 days a week, so I was trying to avoid this.
Oh well I guess a trip to the Apple store is unavoidable.

  • G4 suddenly shuts down on full battery

    Hi all,
My G4 always has to be plugged in ..anytime I attempt to use it on battery it lasts about 10 minutes and then just shuts down. On re-booting it says your computer date is set to march 2004. This may cause eratic behaviour (yeah) but the dates arn't set to that date as I check everytime. took it to mac they took it away and say there's nothing wrong with the machine. get it home BANG...does it again. Any suggestions.....HELP

    Hi Sparke,
Sounds like you need to reset the PRAM and NVRAM go here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US

  • My computer suddenly shuts down!

I need some help I just got my computer I download some softwares that i needed for editing video and audio but now it has been the third time that I am working surfing on the internet and all of the sudden crashes and shuts down if anyone could help me I would really appreciate it thanks!

I had a similar problem on my MacMini -
See the gory details at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=343604&tstart=0
Resetting the clock suggests (from what I've read) a PMU (power management unit) problem. Take it to an Apple Store and get them to check it out.

  • Macbook shuts down on low battery

    Hi!
My macbook powers off on low battery several minutes after low-battery alert. So nothing gets saved if macbook was left without power for a long period of time.
About first 3 month when it was new it went to sleep on low battery. But what happened now and how can I fix such a behaviour?

I believe I have found the problem...
If your battery is 0102 or 0102a firmware (check in System Profiler), then I believe it is the culprit; I have been through 4 batteries, and the only two that worked were 0110 firmware.
Another thing....if you have Secure Virtual Memory on, turn it off. I've noticed that Safe Sleep on low-battery doesn't seem to function if SVM is turned on; however, if I have SVM off and a battery with firmware 0110, it works dandy every time. I've tried SVM both OFF and with it ON with a firmware 0102 battery, and it still gives the same result--shuts down instead of hibernates.
I don't know if that will fix it for everyone, but it certainly fixed it for my last-gen Blackbook! (knock on wood)

  • Shut down after low battery warning

    Hi
After I get the low battery warning on my iBook G4 (about 30 seconds) my iBook unexpectedly shuts down, I have tried recalibrating the battery several times, including shutting the lid to put it to sleep after the warning then plugging it in and waking it (to recalibrate you are supposed to wait until the machine sleeps) and letting it charge right up.
I have also tried resetting the PMU, although I dont think this is working as I hit shift-ctrl-apple/option-and the power button, and all that happens is the machine starts up as usual, according to the documentation, I should have to then power up the machine.
Is itr just that my battery hasd had it? I have notice it only takes an hour/hour and a half to run the battery down, and only about 30mins or so to charge.
Thanks for any help in advance.
    Mike

That definitely sounds like a battery that wants to be replaced.
My iBook behaved in a similar manner--except the "low battery" warning wouldn't even show up!
I think it's time for you to pick up a new battery--they run about $100.

  • TS4002 iPad shut down duet low battery after recharge email is now missing, any way to retrieve it?

I was in the middle of composing or replying to an important email, gmail, battery shut down and now I cannot retreive the very lengthy important email. I have tried contacting google and troubleshooting by looking in archives, deleted spam, all mail etc, 'sent' also, in case it maybe sent through a default, but not there either, archive either!  Please help!

You can save any mail you want to keep on your mac, by dragging it to the 'On My Mac' Filder in Mail.
You can then delete anything left in iCloud you don't want.
If you want to use an alternate service for mail to iCloud, you need to set it up at system preferences > Internet accounts.

  • Macbook - Shuts down with low battery and doesn't go to sleep

I have a Black MacBook 2.16 core duo and have been dealing with this same issue for about 6 months.
At first, the MB (macbook) worked perfectly. battery would get to 5% or so, warn me then go to sleep, then write a safe sleep image, then shutdown. I would turn it back on and it would restore the image to where I left off.
After about 2 months this stopped working properly. When running solely off the battery, the MB would get to about 20% and just shutdown. ppbbbbllltt!
I've spent endless hours on the phone with people in the Phillipines and sitting at Genius Bars. I've gone through all the things mentioned in Apple's support thread: calibrated the battery, reset PRAM, reset SMC / PMU, updated the battery uupdater to 1.1 then 1.2 (I think that 1.3 is only for MB Pros)
I'm on my THIRD BATTERY..it's happening again...at least with the first 2 it worked for a couple of months. With this battery, it bombed out on the first cycle that I went through.
Is this the logic board or the motherboard or something else??
Any other ideas on what to try?
Is this a hardware issue (IE motherboard, logic board...) ?
Is this a software issue (IE - OSX) ?
Is it a firware issue (IE - battery firware) ?
    I'm at a loss....

If it's your third battery you need to have Apple look at the computer itself. As you know now switching batteries is not fixing it. I would guess it is in the power control circuit which is on the motherboard. You need to call and get it checked out.

  • No "Low Battery" Warning - Sudden shut down

    Hi everyone.
It took me sometime to realize this problem, but my MBP reaches the 30% battery level and suddenly shuts down (point blank)..quite disturbing. I've looked around in the forum but there's no precise answer of what to do to solve this. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Forgot to paste my computer information. I'm pretty perplexed because it says that my battery condition is still "good". However, it has gone through 358 cycles...does this indicate a need for a batter replacement despite that the condition is still good?

  • Computer Shuts down when on battery power at 80%

The battery power indicates anywhere from 80% to 90% and will shut down the computer.
No warning, No Low Battery indicator, No error messages.
The only way to boot up is to use the power adapter.
I have tried to reset the computer
I have tried to update the latest battery update, but it tells me it is already installed.
This computer is 8 months old.
Is there anything else I can try?

I had/have this exact same problem after I installed the battery update 1.3 on Macbook Pro a few days ago.
I tried a SMC reset & a PRAM reset, all to no avail.
I called Apple today & talked with 2 different agents explaining my problem. One askked me to do another PRAM reset, which I did, again, to no success.
So, they are sending me a new battery, which I am really hoping will solve my problem (Macbook Pro shutting down instantly on an almost full battery at around 84% while not attached to the power cord).
Thing is, I never had a problem with the battery before I installed this update, so this battery update 1.3 somehow corrupted my battery/settings, and unfortunetly once you run this update, your stuck.
There is no way to undo this update as it changes the firmware permanetly.
    Ugh.
Next time, I am not going to be so quick when installing "updates", I apparently really don't need. This battery update 1.3 has just caused me headaches & problems on my new Macbook pro.
Heed my advice. Research firmware updates carefully before subjecting your computer to these unneeded "fixes".
My advice is to call Apple & let them know of this problem. Get a new battery. They were apparently unware of this problem update when I called today, and more people need to be vocal about this & complain about this apparently corrupt battery update.
    Good Luck.

  • Sudden shut down battery problem, factory reset and SW update/repair did NOT help

Hello everyone, i have a "sudden shut down problem" with my Xperia Z1 C6903 too. Sudden Shutdown always happens at about 70% for the first time, after been fully charged. I cant turn it on right afterwards but if i wait 1 min. it works. However sooner or later the phone, somewhere between the remaining battery, will repeatedly shut down again. I couldnt find out what triggers it and android battery test show that the battery is ok. I am not an expert with these devices, but i hope it is a software or calibration problem? There is a similar threat which points to the solution of using Sony PC Companion Software repair, i tryed it twice and it did NOT help! edit:I havent changed the device after PC Companion repair step, thus no other Apps are running and no energy managment has been configured (stamina mode) edit 2:hidden battery info * # * # 4 6 3 6 # * # * shows:...battery health: goodbattery voltage: 3969 mVbattery temperature: 36.6° C...is there a way which gives me more details than just "good"? And what does that even mean?

Hi, I have exactly the same problem after upgtading my phone to lollipop. I tried repair from PC companion and facfory rest, but no luck.
Do you think it is Because of the battery? Never had this problem before upgrading to lollipop. The other thing I notice is when the phone suddenly shutdown (baterry jump from 50-60% to 0%), I just need to plug in my charger and wait a moment before turning it on, then here is the problem.
    1. Sometimes the battery indicator shows 50% or slightly lower than before shutting down.
    2. The other times, it will show accordingly that the baterry is out (1% because it's charging)
    3. Most of the times, there is a message "android is upgrading...", when turning it on.
Any idea how to solve this problem?

  • I have pluged a portable battery to the USB and my macbook pro stopped working after that, right before it shut down there was a message on the screen that said something like " USB device is withdrawing so much power, please disconnect and connect again?

I have plugged a portable battery to the USB and my macbook pro stopped working after that, right before it shut down there was a message on the screen that said something like " USB device is withdrawing so much power, please disconnect and connect again?
if the device I connected have caused this, shouldn't the macbook itself have some type of protection that should prevent this from happening.
because when I took it to an apple certified maintenance shop, the guy said that now it could only run while connected to the power. it won't run on batteries. and that I have to change the motherboard.
can I just replace the damaged part only, would apple consider this as a design issue and they could pay for it, or should I just buy a new motherboard for 800$.
    Help.

    BB1B2,
The problem is in finding a tech shop that will/can do board level repairs on Macs. They are few. And I certainly wouldn't spend $800 on a new logic board - I would replace the computer if I had to pay that much!
You could call around to a few repair shops and see if they feel competent to isolate the problem and do a board level repair - but I'm afraid, in the end, that your search will be futile.
    Sorry,
    Clinton

My iphone4 suddenly shut down.I pluged into a charger it started vibration and got heat up in off mood. I also checked it to genius he said that its battery is ok but problem is some thing else. It is still in off mod. what i have to do?

I  am having a similar odd issue. First of all this summer i took my iphone 4 to apple because my screen had quit. I could hear calls and texts coming thru but screen was unresponsive. I was a month out of warranty so the nice fella at apple gave me a 30 day warranty, then replaced my handset with a refurb. Saturday night at dinner i was on my phine and it died. I plugged it in thinking nothing of it and went to bed. When i wooe up after the charger had been on all night all i had was the black screen with the battery (red) and lightning bolt, meaning it knew it plugged in but still did nothing. So off to apple i go. They said i was out of warranty and the problem (never said what problem) would cost 170 bucks to fix. So i went and upgraded to the iphone 5 ( figured if i'm spending that anyways may as well be on a new phone). When I got home i tinkered with the old one with all the online suggestions i could find. (Cleaning ports, hard reset, putting into recovery mode, and checking indicators for water damage which there was none). Still only saw the battery symbol. I left it alone figuring i can sell off cheap and someone else can repair. Last night for kicks i plugged it in again and it came to life! It is in recovery mode (needs to be hooked to itunes to regain functionality) but showed 100% battery charge. I went to show my bf and realized an issue. If its not plugged into the wall adaptor, it wont turn on. I figured then that if i can get it plugged in and pull it up on itunes maybe it would be fine. When plugged into the computer it wont hold enough power. It thrns on shows the apple for 30 seconds, shuts off. My ending conclusion on my own is that it needs a new battery in order to be revived. Anyone think this sounds like a reasonable conclusion? Or will i be wasting money? If i can get it restored to functional, cheaply i can give to my bf (his pos lg phone is almost toast) or sell it.
