Computer talking to me

How do I turn this off. My kids pressed something and it won't stop.

Go to System Preferences>Accessibility and turn Voice Over off.
Edit: Command+F5 also toggles it on/off.

  • How to Shut off computer talking to you

Today my computer randomly started telling me everything i am doing. For example, it tells me when i pick a different window, what letters i am typing, who i am talking to, and so on. Can anyone please help me so i can turn this setting off? Thank you.

Was it creepy? I mean, when you suddenly heard a voice describing everything you were doing? That's stalker stuff right there, man.
And how do you know it was telling you everything you were doing? How do you know it wasn't telling all of your secrets to...THE GOVERNMENT???

  • HELP!  my computer talks to me!

hey guys, my cat walked on the keyboard and now my mac talks to me. every time i do some kind of action e.g push the caps lock button or switch between applications, it tells me the current application or tells me if the caps is on or off.
how do i turn this annoying feature off?

    Glad that worked...
It was just hard to know for sure, because there's another voice feature that you activate by pressing escape...

  • Computer talks to me if warning is left open too long

I'm playing a game and didn't notice a pop-up warning (system preferences). I assume after several minutes of staying open, my computer "reads" it aloud to me. I don't recall ever turning on any voice command thingies. Any ideas how to turn this off?
cmd-F5 (voiceover) was Off, I do know that much.
(Hmm, on an unrelated side-note, I just discovered F5 brings up a drop-down menu of word choices. Cool!)

System Preferences>Speech>Text to Speech and uncheck 'Announce when alerts are displayed'.

  • When I hit Shift + S, the computer talks to me

I must have accidently hit some wrong key, but now when I try to type a capital S (shift + s) the computer speaks whatever is highlighted. How can I change it back to simply printing a capital S?
(now, I can only print a capital 's' by pressing 'capital lock', then the 's' key. I need a clue here!

Open the Speech pane of System Preferences and check whether either the listening key or the speech key has become set to that keystroke; if so, change the setting.

  • My computer talks everytime I point my mouse to a command

Hello everyone. My question today is not about editing however, it is occurring while I'm editing. I took a break to clean my keyboard (without turning the computer off) and I started pressing the buttons to clean them. After I finished cleaning everything, I tried resuming my project but everything I point my mouse at the computer speaks.
    For Example:
If I point my mouse to the mac finder the computer says, "finder"
No matter where I point my mouse or what command I direct the computer to take it speaks.
Does anyone know how to turn this command off?
    thanks
    Erv

Actually David, I believe Neil got it right with Voice Over when you consider the OP mentioned:
--If I point my mouse to the mac finder the computer says, "finder"
No matter where I point my mouse or what command I direct the computer to take it speaks.--
Of course since the OP didn't respond, award anything or mark the question as solved then I guess we will never know for sure.
What ever happened to people responding to those that help them? Does anonymity eliminate civility? Okay I'm off the soapbox now.

  • Why is my computer talking??!!

All of a sudden my Mac is announcing everything I do. I have no idea what I did to cause this. Please HELP! It's driving me insane. On the desktop, there is a box around whatever document I choose to open. At the moment it's announcing every letter I type. Thank you in advance for restoring my sanity.

    Hi Marcia:

  • My computer is talking back, how do I turn it off

I turned on something on my computer by pressing the buttons - control + F5. And now the computer talks back, saying every little thing I do like I am blind but not deaf. When I type is says what every little key I entered. And when I click on anything it will say what it is and highlight the icon or box with a bold black box. So, how do I turn it off.

Tomorrow you will think this event was funny, however - for today....
Go to system preferences (looks like a light switch on the dock)
Click on "Universal Access" - it looks like a blue ball with a person.
Play with the settings in there to get things back to what you want.
This is for Tiger. If you are using Leopard it may be slightly different.
    Good Luck

  • My computer is running soooooo slow!

I use both Safari and Chrome and in both OS everything runs slow. I can leave the room after closing out a program and to go to another room and back and maybe the program will be closed by then. I ran the etrecheck but I am not well versed in computer talk.  I can however follow directions if there is anyone out there who could help.  Here is the etrecheck report.  Lots of red but that is just something to be "noticed".  Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

For the way you are using your computer, more RAM might help. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

  • I have downloaded the latest version of itunes but when i plug in my ipod it doesn't come up as a device so carn't sync. Its like theres something blocking my computer link with itunes please help!

I have downloaded the latest version of itunes but when i plug in my ipod it doesnt list any devices in itunes to enable me to choose my ipod to sync it. Its like there is a link missing or something blocking my computer talking to itunes. My computer itself recongnises the ipod but itunes doesn't. Please help!

Yes reinstalled itunes a couple of days ago but got it sorted now thanks, the problem was that when i wiped my computer last week and reinstalled everything using the discs the free McAfee anti virus that the computer came with was still in my all programmes list although i aren't using it. This morning i tried unistalling that (didn't think it would make any difference as the programme wasn't active) once uninstalled i pluged the ipod in and hey presto it is now recognised by itunes, THANK GOODNESS. So panick over for now, thank you very much.

  • I have followed your 5 step process to load elements 13 and it does not work.  It bears no relationsip to what comes up on my computer.  I have probably spet 10 hours trying to make elements 13 operational.  I have down loaded win64 7z and win64exe three

I have spent over 10 hours trying to upgrade elements 11 to elements 13.  The 5 step process you sent me last night bears no relationship to what comes up on the computer screen.  I have downloaded win 64 7z and win exe to no avail--nothing happens.  What do I do???  How do I do it.  I am an old man an do not understand computer talk.  I need basic English.  I really need someone to call me at 972-403-1515 and walk me through the process.
In addition you are now charging me for two programs---I only need one.  How do we correct that?

  • HT2529 This morning Voice Over started running on my computer, but when I go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES/INTERNATIONAL ACCESS the Voice Over option is off, so I turned it on and then off, but it's still on.  What else can I do to make it stop?

This morning Voice Over started running on my computer when I turned it on.  I did not turn Voice Over.  Could I have hit a combination of keys on the keyboard that accidentally turned it on?  When I went to System Preferences and chose Internation Access it showed that Voice Over was not even on.  I turned it on and turned it off to reset it, and it is still running.  How is this possible, and how to I get rid of it?
    Trumpeter

I went to System Preferences, Universal Access, and then VoiceOver for the fiftieth time after you said to check VoiceOver Utility to see if I saw anything odd.  On The VoiceOver screen it was actually saying that VoiceOver was on.  All day the VoiceOver option was off, and the computer talked to me everytime I logged in.  I tried turning it on and off and it still talked to me.  Now the VoiceOver option was on, so I turned it off again. Weird! I had tried several combinations of keys again and again as the tech instructed me to do, but we couldn't turn it off, but I have to admit that after my phone went dead I tried everything I could imagine; so maybe in trying to turn the talking off I turned the VoiceOver Option on. Anyway, somewhere along the way it quite talking to me.
Let me ask you a couple of questions.  When I clicked on VoiceOver Utility, after turning VoiceOver off, the screen message says: Speak the following greeting after login:  Welcome to Mac OSX.  VoiceOver is running. I was assuming that it meant VoiceOver was running.  That is what it is saying right now.   It's not talking to me anymore, but the screen says this whether the VoiceOver icon is on or off.  What is this all about.  Is it telling me that Voice Over is still running when I see this, or what?  After all, even when the OFF icon was chosen the computer still spoke to me when I hit each key upon logging in.  After you read the rest of this you will understand why I am asking if it is still running even though it's not talking to me.
There is a box that appears and says "Portable Preferences for (Jane Doe) have been detected on (JaneDoe).  Would you like to use them?    Always Use   /  No  /   Yes      What does that mean?
Last but not least. I was looking around and was clicking on Application, Documents, etc.  When I clicked on Documents, only four things came up even though there are tons of documents on my computer.  All four of them have to do with VoiceOver, and they were labeled as documents.  One of the documents had this in it:
    SCRConfiguration Cursor Tracking KBToVO
    SCRConfiguration Cursor Tracking VOToTXT
    SCRConfiguration Cursor Tracking VOToKB
I'm not a computer genius, so maybe I just don't know what I'm looking at.  Is it normal for something like this to be found under documents?  All of these were dated today, and the problems started today. I haven't gone to bed yet, so even though it's after midnight it's still the same day to me.  Anyway, none of the documents were dated before this problem started.  On top of that, I have tons of documents on my computer, but when I clicked on Documents, those four are the only ones that showed up.  After trying to decipher the programming language on them, I went to click on Applications and hit Documents again, and all the documents came up.  I scanned the list and didn't see them, but there are so many documents on here that I haven't had time to slowly go over them to see if I missed those four documents somehow. Since then I haven't been able to get just those four to appear by themselves again.
Now, is it possible that I still have a hacker and he knows through a key logger everything I am communicating to you and the Apple Store,  Maybe he did made a mistake and accidentally caused this problem, and through logging every key I have typed he has learned about his mistake and fixed it.  He could still be key logging me now without me knowing it; or maybe he removed the keylogger, because he know I'm taking it in to the Apple Store and can tell them now exactly what to look for.
It is either a hacker, or I have a very vivid imagination.  What do you think?

  • Someone has gained access to my computer. please help

Recently someone has gained access to my computer. The first time they interacted with me they made a chat window pop up and started to ask me questions about what i was doing on the computer. I couldn't close the window he was typing in i had to shut my computer off. The window i think said something like controller something. The second incounter was a few mins ago the person really went to town. First they was making my computer talk to me. I know the Mac can talk but it doesn't say stuff like "i like cocaine ******", "**** ", plus many more and called me the N word. This made me believe they can see through my webcam on my mac. And they where saying my username .After 10 mins of them spamming the voices back to back. They then made a Google chrome open up with like 10 tabs that played a werid video like a dude from the saw movies or something/the ring type video. So i close it then they open it again with like 30 tabs... so now i really don't  know what to do to stop this. im running snow leopard and updating is not really an option right now. I checked like my firewall cause that's one of the few things i know of and it was off the first time. But the second time the firewall was on and they still did what ever they wanted. I work from my computer and don't want to lose all my programs but i wonder if i just learn how to reset my hole computer would that stop them.i have the snow leopard disc somewhere.

    Uninstall Hamachi.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmyrmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
Back up all data before making any changes. You generally have to reboot in order to complete an uninstallation.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
You may be advised by others to try to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name, or by running "utilities" that purport to remove software. I don't give such advice. Those tactics often will not work and may  make the problem worse.
