Computer Thinks My iPod Touch is a Camera

I know there are lots of topics on this, but I can't find a solution! I recently recieved a new Laptop (Dell Inspiron running Windows Vista 32-bit.) When it came to plugging my 16gb 2nd gen iPod Touch in for the 1st time, I went into My Computer to transfer my music over, but my iPod was being displayed as a digital still camera. It is appearing in iTunes with all my music on it, but the problem seems to be with the computer. I have tried updating the device driver, as suggested in the following thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1141495&tstart=0
but it just says the correct drivers are installed. I've tried uninstalling the drivers and then reconnecting my iPod, but the computer just installs the same driver again. Last time I checked, my iPod was working with my desktop computer (that also has all my music on it) that is running windows xp. I have the latest version of iTunes installed and software 2.2 on my iPod (2.2.1 update almost killed it!) Any help would be grately appreciated! Thanks x

do you have 'Saved Photos' on your iPod? i.e. ones which you have obtained on the touch by email/safari/screenshots?
this is what usually makes the computer think it is a camera. when you do have 'Saved Photos' you can remove them either by deleting on the ipod (select photo, hit the bin icon) OR (on a PC) navigate to My Computer, it should come up in there like other external drives/disks do.
you CAN'T however move your music from your iPod to your computer. because (apart from with photos) it does not have a disk mode. you will need to move your music from your old computer to your new one as you presumably have with your other files.

  • PC thinks my iPod Touch is a camera

Whenever I plug my iPod Touch into its USB port, the PC (which is running WindowsXP) gives me a window with 3 choices.  I can either "launch" 1) the ABBYY FineReader (which looks like scanning software), 2) the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard, or 3) Picassa 3.  I suppose there is a 4th choice which is to do nothing and that's what I usually do.
I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.5, which might've been a mistake.  I don't recall whether my iPod showed up under DEVICES with the previous version, but I don't think I ever had any trouble finding it.  Now, DEVICES doesn't even show up on the left-hand column in iTunes.  I followed some instructions that were suggested for a question similar to mine.  The result was that iTunes wanted to "Restore" my iPod, i.e. restore it to its factory settings and (I presume) wipe out any apps or content I already managed to put on it.  It didn't show the "name" of my iPod or any other information about it, like I remember seeing on a similar screen on my PC before (most likely in the previous version of iTunes).
If I look under My Computer in Windows, the iPod is visible and even shows the "name" we gave it the way iTunes used to.  The trouble is that My Computer recognizes it as a "Digital camera."  If I double-click on it, I see the two pictures I've transfered from the PC to the iPod but nothing else.  If I try dragging an mp3 file into that window, nothing happens.
    So I suppose I have 2 questions:
    1)  How do I get my PC to recognize my iPod Touch as an iPod instead of a camera?
    and
    2)  How do I get DEVICES to show up in iTunes without wiping out the existing Apps and downloaded content?
What I would really like to do is move some music and some podcasts from my PC to the iPod Touch, but right now all I can move are pictures.  That is why this question has the title is does and I'm hoping answers to the above questions will allow me transfer mp3 files, which is my ultimate goal.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

I went to the link you posted and followed all the steps.  I was thrilled to see that it worked!  I don't recall whether my PC still recognized my iPod Touch as a camera or not, but DEVICES did show up in iTunes and it recognized the name of my iPod Touch.
Now, though, everything is back the way it was.  The PC tells me I have a camera connected via USB and iTunes doesn't even have DEVICES listed in the left-hand column.
I'm wondering if this is the problem:  I had the iPod on until the battery was so "low" that it stopped.  I didn't press and hold the button on top.  In fact, until I read the article you linked to, I didn't even know you could turn the iPod on and off that way.  I would only press it once until the screen turned blank and simply pressed the Home buttom to turn it back on.  Until I read that article, I thought the Home button was the On button.
So now my question is this:  Should I ALWAYS turn the iPod off by pressing and holding the button on top until I see the red slider on the screen?
    Thanks!

  • Windows XP only recognizes iPod Touch as a camera.

There are older discussions on this topic here, but they did not solve my problem. So I thought I would post what finally worked for me.
For some reason my PC started thinking my iPod Touch was a camera. Despite what I have seen elsewhere, it was not due to my having pictures on the device... there are none.
Others have talked about the need to update the ipod device driver, but Windows XP w/ Serivce Pack 3 does not allow me to do that.
I noticed that the Apple USB Driver was missing, and could not get it replaced until I found this at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver
Right-click the Apple Mobile Device entry in Device Manager and choose Update Driver from the shortcut menu.
If asked to connect to Windows Update to search for software, choose "No, not this time."
Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install". Then click Next.
Click the Have Disk button. Note: If the Have Disk option is not present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device if listed, and click next. Then the Have Disk button should appear.
Click the Browse button, then navigate to the following location: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
    Double-click the usbaapl file.
Click OK in the Have Disk window. Then click Next. Click Finish. Windows installs the driver.

    Hi w!cked,
If your PC only recognizes your iPod touch as a camera and it doesn't show up in iTunes, try downloading and installing the latest version of iTunes. You can download iTunes 8.1.1 from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If the issue persists, make sure the USB drivers are installed properly as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

  • Windows thinks my ipod touch is a digital camera. How do I change this so itunes can see it?

Windows thinks my ipod touch is a digital camera. How can I change the device in windows, so that i can re-register it as an ipod and itunes can connect with it.?

It is normal for the iPod to be seen as a camera since that is how one gets photo off the iPod.  You can turn it off by:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Disabling digital camera notification in Windows XP
To get iTunes to see you iPod see:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
If you previoulys installed camera or scanner software that may be causing the problem.

  • IPod touch recognized as camera

I have an iPod Touch 2gen and I had to reformat my laptop. It is using Windows Vista (ugh, I know). I want to pass the files (apps and music) from the iPod to the computer (The iPod Touch has the latest iOS it can have and I just downloaded iTune so it's also the latest one as well) and I can't because the computer is recognizing the iPod as a digital Camera. I've tried disabeling the action in the Control Panel by choosing "Take No Action" in the Auto Play thing. I've also tried to do it through the Computer Manager on My Computer and nothing. Anyone else has any other way I can fix this? Or maybe another way I can transfer my files from the iPod to the computer?
    Thanks in Advance!

  • HT1476 Help!!! Please!!! iPod touch 8gb w/camera (older model) won't charge :(

Have an older model iPod touch 8gb w/camera that will not charge. I know it's not the cord or the device we are using to charge it because ithas been working to charge it before and it charges all our other ipod devices.
An example of what it does. The battery will show that it needs to be charged in the upper right corner, it'll be red. So we will plug the iPod in to charge. Even if it's plugged in all night long, it doesn't charge. The green battery icon that used to be on the screen when it was plugged in, no longer shows up. Also, the battery icon in the upper right corner doesn't change from red and doesn't show it's plugged in. I have tried to holdoing down the power and home button to reset the device. I'm not sure what else to try. Are there places to take your iPod for repair or should I contact apple? HELP!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

    - See the not-charging topic of:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Does iTunes see the iPod when you connect to your computer?
    - Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, foreign material and cracked or broken plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

I can download photos to my computer via my Ipod Touch but not a video of 833mb yet I can send it to my FB account on the same said device, does this make any sense?

    See:
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
Do y have XP? if so see that topic in the above link,
Can you go to My Computer>iPod>DCIM folder and copy it from there?
Windows XP can't import video files larger than 500 MB using Camera and Scanner Wizard. You can transfer these files from your device by selecting them in My Computer and dragging or copying the files to your computer's hard drive.

  • TS4062 I can't sync music on my computer to my ipod touch; the ipod shows up under Devices in itunes but does not show buttons (Summary etc.) when I click on it. Suggestions?

I can't sync music already on my computer to my ipod touch; the ipod shows up under Devices in itunes but does not show buttons (Summary etc.) when I click on it. I've read through all the Help tutorials but none of them say what to do if the sync options don't pop up when you highlight the device.  I've already spent way too much time trying to figure this out and it's driving me crazy!  Thanks for any help you can offer.

This is correct.  It will not show in finder.  It is not an external storage device.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.  Open itunes connect ipod, do not sync, click File>Transfer Purchases
