Computer to camera to external tv hookup problems

I have been transferring home movies to video and then editing them on Final Cut Express v. 2.0.3. I have a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 1024 MB of memory operating on System 10.2.8
Connections:
The camera is connected to the computer via Firewire 400. This permits me to input material from the camera to the computer for editing and output. This works correctly.
The camera also is connected via RCA plugs (red, white, yellow) to an external television set. The advantage of this is that, as I edit, I am able to see the product displayed on the TV set which is how it will be viewed ultimately, and is different than viewing it on the computer monitor.
Initially, this setup worked quite well with the video display both on the computer monitor and the external tv set. Then, somehow, a glitch developed which disrupted the ability of the editing and playback to be seen on the external television set.
I have tried this setup with two different cameras and get the same disappointing result. This leads me to believe the problem is somewhere in the computer.
When Final Cut Express is activated it recognizes the camera. I am able to place video into FCE via the camera and to capture edited video from FCE onto videotape in the camera.
The only glitch seems to be the lost ability to see and edited product on the external TV set -- a function that worked for some time and now has stopped working.
My guess is the problem is somewhere in the innards of the computer/system. Any clues to a cure?

Thanks for your quick reply. I trashed FCE preferences from Library;, Prefs folder but the problem persisted.
I'm new at this so I hope the following is the information you need.
Under the sequence setting, the track size is medium, and the thumbnail display is set at "name & thumbnail".
The format is 720 by 480 frame size, 29.97 fps with stereo audio at 48.0 Khz.

I had to delete everything on my computer and install the operating system again , but I had to install Snow Leopard because it was the cd that came with the computer when I bought it. The problem is that I had already paid for the OS Lion and even had upgraded to the Mavericks . I do not think it's fair to have to pay again and I would like to upgrade my operating system without having to pay again for the same system.

    Hi anatuta,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you are trying to upgrade your Mac to a newer version of OS X, after completing a fresh install of Snow Leopard.
If you have already purchased and downloaded OS X Lion and Mavericks, you should be able to find these items in the Purchased section of the Mac App Store.
You may find the steps in this article helpful with finding the items:

If you do not see the items in the Purchased section, they may be hidden:

  • Time machine, finder save to external hard drive problems

I have a new 2.26 GHz mini and I wanted to get bootcamp going and install windows xp. The instructions suggested to backup the hard drive and I thought this is a great time to try the time machine. I plugged in a external hard drive, opened time machine (Time machine said it needed 29 GB for full backup and the drive had 32 GB free), selected the drive, and let the "backup count down(I think it was a minute and a half)" run down to zero. Time machine started backing up the my main drive to the external drive no problem. It was running good (100MB in 5-10 seconds) for a little while when I noticed that it had reached 2.3 GB and was not going any higher. I let it stay like that for about 5 minutes thinking that maybe it would start going again. No luck. I shut down time machine and saw a finder window with the progress bar behind it saying 2.3 GB. I push the stop button and it said stopping, but it would not stop and disappear like it should. I relaunch the finder and the icons on the desktop disappeared and would not come back. I relaunched repeatedly but they would not come back. Since the bar at the top of the screen would not come back I had to hold in the power button to shut down the computer.
Upon restart everything seemed to work fine until I tried time machine again and it would not work. So I tried to manually backup the files to the external drive. When I copied some files the little finder window popped up and said, zero KB of 290 MB, and would not change. I left it running while opened a browser and did a search for an answer to my problems. After about a half an hour I went back and saw that some files had been transferred. When I looked in the Activity monitor, I saw it was saving the files very slowly. I went to the finder progress bar and when I hit the stop button, it would say stopping but it wouldn't. I would have to relaunch the finder to make it stop. Then I tried to copy the files to a shared drive on my network and the same thing happens.
Before using the time machine both these drives worked no problems. I went to the shared drive computer and used that machine to copy the files from the mini. All files transferred no problems. So now I'm trying to find out what is wrong with my mini. It seems that it has to do with the finder since it effects both the usb and ethernet hard drives. All other functions work as they should. I don't know if anyone has had this problem after using time machine but any help would be appreciated.
Also I tried deleting my com.apple.finder.plist and relaunch the finder. No change.

That's much too small for your backups. Time Machine usually needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up (see #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum).
I noticed that it had reached 2.3 GB and was not going any higher. I let it stay like that for about 5 minutes thinking that maybe it would start going again. No luck. I shut down time machine and saw a finder window with the progress bar behind it saying 2.3 GB.
That sounds like the drive is not formatted properly. See #C1 in the Start with the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
The other problems may have the same cause.
Most likely, it's set up for Windoze and not suitable for Time Machine. With only 32 GB free, you must have other data on the drive, so you probably can't erase it and reformat it for Time Machine.
Report back with your findings for the *Partition Map Scheme* and Format of the drive (per #C1), and we can figure out what to do next.

Computer iMac7,1 has been giving sundry problems for sometime. Within the last six weeks I have reinstalled the OS (Snow Leopard),without affecting the overall contents of the hard drive.
±3 weeks later the problems became more serious and I againreinstalled the OS and installed OS 6.6.7 from the internet.
I used the option to restore from the external backup driveand went back some time as it was my intention to reinstall individualcomponent in an attempt to find out where the problem might lie. This hasintroduced an entirely new problem! If I open Time Machine from the desktop itappears that all backups from late 2009 to June 2011 are intact. But, in thiscase there are none of the restore functions &c on screen. The latter areonly shown if Time Machine is opened from the menu bar or from the dock but, inthis case, available are only backups in late 2009!
I also opened the Apple Hardware Test in an attempt toestablish the nature of the problem. The ‘quick’ version said there’s nothingwrong; the more detailed one reported “Error detected, 4HD/11/40000004.” I haveagain tried to employ this test but nothing I do can induce it to open!!!
What to do? I need help urgently and would appreciate anyadvice that offers solutions to the problem.

To check your S.M.A.R.T status open disk utility and click on your drive and then click on the info icon.

  • External Hard Drive Problem with latest Upgrade

Since my lastest software update on my mac mini (the most recent, only a few days ago), my external hardrive has been reading (loudly, this is the problem) a chunk of data, about a MB or so, to the processor every 60-90 seconds. none of it is being written. there's no CPU usage (i just watched the activity monitor for a while). It happens even more frequently when I'm using itunes (stored on the Ex HD).
My hard drive is a LaCie with firewire connection.
    Any ideas, anyone?
    Thanks.

    JOrdan,
You write that everything functions as normal with the external drive disconnected.
Then (if I am surmising correctly) when you reconnect the external drive., the problem returns.
From this, I infer that your computer, without the external drive, is perfectly able to perform all of its functions.
But there is something on the external drive that requires some of these functions to be performed on it - a file of some sort that is set to be regularly checked and updated in some way.
So it sounds to me as if you might want to take a look at everything you have on the external drive, and try to pin down that one thing that is asking the computer to do work on it.

  • Cant setup webcam on 4 machines both built-in & external have same problem

Im trying to get my webcams to work but there seems to be a problem.
I own 4 Apple computers. A macbook pro, a macbook air, and two mac minis. Every thing works great, but if I try to use the webcams with either ichat or flash sites (eg youtubes record from webcam) all I get is a black screen. They work fine in all other programs like iphoto imovie and photobooth. I would have posted this in the ichat section but because flash based websites stopped working too (they worked fine at first) I decided to post it here in stead. It doesnt matter whether they are the built in isight cameras or external ones because they all have the same problem, even worse is that the mac minis are brand new and right out of the box my external logitech cameras do the same thing. They only work in iphoto, imovie and photobooth.
I really hope that apple is looking into this and releases a fix but in the meantime does anyone here know how to fix this? Thanks in advance Mark

    Welcome to Discussions, Mark (DXHulkster)
*_First suggestion_:* If you installed the software bundled with your Logitechs, follow Logitech instructions on how to uninstall it. Restart Mac and test again. If the problem remains, continue with (2)
*_Second Suggestion_:* Several 10.6.5 users are currently finding problems with Flash based video web sites, perhaps due to timing differences in the various update cycles of the developers.
Therefore, check all third-party items like Flip4Mac, Safari "Extensions", web-based chat items, social web site "toolbars", etc., to be sure you are using the latest versions compatible with your system's versions of OS X and browser. Uninstall any with known issues pending their next update.
If you are still having iSight problems ONLY on Flash-based web sites, here are some things you can try. Depending on system configuration and installed third-party items, various users have reported different methods of restoring Flash video website functionality. Which might work for you seems to be a matter of what you have added to your system, so keep trying any relevant to your system until you find the one that might work for you.
    (1) For those who have installed Google plugins, user OysterOyster reports that uninstalling them restores proper iSight function with Flash and Mac OS X 10.6.5.
If Google is your problem, the GoogleVoiceAndVideoUninstaller.app should be in your hard drive's Library/Application Support/Google/ folder. (not your *Home > Library* folder)
Several users confirm that using the Google uninstaller works to restore Flash video functions.
Some other users, including those who do not use the Google plugins, have found other remedies.
    (2) User joew13 reports that installing the 64-bit Flash plug-in beta for Mac OS X (DMG, 8.7 MB) fixed Flash sites for him.
This link allows download of the 64-bit plugin beta from an official Adobe page:
      http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html
or, to download the beta directly, click this link--> http://tinyurl.com/2frejs4
Several other users have confirmed success after the beta update.
    (3) User imagerle downgraded Flash to version 10,0,45,2 to restore Flash video.
If this older version is not available on a backup or an old install disk, it can be downloaded from Adobe's Archived Flash Players page:
      http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html
    (4) User sirjoe82 and others have reported that uninstalling Flip4Mac restored their Flash video website functions.
*_Third Suggestion_:* If iChat is still a problem after you get the Flash problem resolved, our iChat guru, Ralph will likely be able to help you with the iChat part of the problem. I could not find your iChat problem post in iChat, so I have asked Ralph to take a look here. Take his advice over mine if there is a conflict.

  • External drive boot problem

I have a Verbatim USB external drive plugged into my iMac used for backups with time machine.  When I start the computer it immediately stops at a blank white screen.  If I turn the computer off and unplug the external drive and restart it works fine.  Is there anyway to make the computer boot with the external drive plugged in?

Open Sys preferences then Startup disk and select your internal drive and click Restart then again restart from the drop down that Drops Down.
Once you have done that and the system restarts shut it down and connect the external then start it back up. It should now go to the internal drive automatically.
If it doesn't then you have some other problem which may be a hardware problem. Post back with your results.

MY COMPUTER (ISIGHT) CAMERA HAS STOPPED WORKING.... HOW DO I TURN IT BACK ON?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Your computer has shut down because of a problem

    Hi there,
I have a Macbook Air which is about 3 months old now, and in the last couple of months, applications have started hanging, the keyboard is sluggish in Safari, and more specifically, I've had loads of times when I've opened the lid after the machine has been on sleep, and received the message "Your computer has shut down because of a problem".
I've been on to Apple support, and they took me through how to repair disk permissions, reset the System Management Controller, and clear the caches. But I just had the same thing this morning.
The latest kernel panic from the Console is shown below - is anyone able to shed any light on this?
    Thanks

I've just purchased a new 2014 15" MacBookPro to replace my much missed 17" MBP. I got the works: OS 10.9.4, 2.8GHz Intel i7, 16GB memory and a 1 TB SSD, but despite the expense, I still don't have a computer that works...
The problem is that every time I try to open any program from Office 2011, I immediately get the following window, for example for Word: "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." This happens each and every time I try to open Word or other Office 2011 component.
Thinking it might be a licensing issue, I purchased and downloaded a new copy of Office 2011 from Amazon and installed it on my new MBP. Same issue once again.
I tried to remove all copies of Office 2011 from the MBP, but the instructions provided by Microsoft required about three page and seventeen steps and the page was somehow corrupted and would not print in its entirety, nor would it e-mail as anything other than a link to the corrupted page. Not trusting my memory, I decided not to try this without adult supervision.
I used Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions, as described on an existing thread regarding the same problem, but to no avail.
I removed and later replaced the "Microsoft User Data" folder from the Documents folder, but that was no help.
I have copied the short version of the "Microsoft Error Reporting log version: 2.0," below, for those of you with a deeper knowledge of the internal workings, or non-workings of things Mac when crossed with things MS.
    Error Signature:

Surely others have encountered and solved this same problem, and I'm hoping they can help me do the same. I don't know if this is a known issue or simply a matter of my having bumbled naively through a process far more complex than I was led to believe.

  • Running Itunes library on a new computer off of an external hard drive

Hello, I've recently purchased a Macbook and an external hard drive. I transferred all my files from my old Mac onto my external and would like to try to run my itunes library from there through my new laptop as opposed to putting all the files onto the new computer.
Is it possible to have the files exclusively running off the hard drive and never going onto the new macbook? How might I go about doing this?
I've tried following some of the video tutorials but that just seems to route you to do it from your old computer off of a external hard drive, and nothing to do with using it on a new computer.
Basically what I want to do is get everything running off the external (all the old computer's data) and none of it ever to set foot on my new Macbook.
Thank you all in advance for your help!
    -Rob

Assuming you use the iTunes default settings where iTunes copied added items to your iTunes folder and organizes your library (meaning - everything is all self contained in the iTunes folder), then all you have to do is drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
If you want to test that it worked or would like to actually start using it from that location instead, use these instructions when you start iTunes to point it to the new location...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one

If you are just testing to make sure a backup copy works and still want to use the internal location, then close iTunes after you verify it works, and restart iTunes again with the same instructions and point it back to your internal drive (original) location. Otherwise you are all set to use the library from the external location.
When you move the external drive to another computer, use the same start up instructions above to point your iTunes on that computer to the library on the external drive.

The file to download the app for Android is not working from my phone--it says that the file isn't there. However it does see the one for the Iphone (even though it can't use it). I've tried it multiple times and continue to get the same message: "NOT FOUND The requested item could not be found". I also tried through the Market application on the phone but ended-up with the same result.
I'm very computer literate and am pretty sure the problem is on your end. If this is the case then no one can download the app. I considered that perhaps because it's still in Beta that it was removed due to some other type of software issue. I would really like to use Firefox on my new Droid (2.0); when with this be available?

Firefox will not appear in the Market for most phones with incompatible hardware. You can check if your phone is supported here:
    https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android
Even on some supported devices, a bug in the Market software prevents Firefox from showing up. This may be related to the fairly recent Android Market app update. If you go to Settings/Applications/Market and choose "Uninstall" you can uninstall the update, and then search for and install Firefox from the marketplace.
Or, if you have a supported phone, you can download the app directly by typing this address into your phone's browser: http://bit.ly/fxbeta3
(Note: To download the app directly for an AT&T phone, you will have to search for instructions on "sideloading" the APK file, since AT&T disables the option to install from non-Market sources.)
