Computer to Computer Data Transfer Without FireWire

When I went from the original iBook to the first generation MacBook, all the data from the older computer got flawlessly transferred to the new laptop using FireWire.
How is one supposed to transfer information from an earlier MacBook to a newer model MacBook now that they are limited to having USB ports only? (I do not want the updated white MacBook that does retain FireWire, nor do I otherwise require the MacBook Pro - which also kept FireWire.)
Curious to hear how others are planning to transfer their data.
Thanks.

You "can" use Ethernet networking and file sharing to transfer data. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for 'file sharing.' If you have a home network just connect your MacBook to your home network either wirelessly or via Ethernet cable. If you don't have a home network then you can connect the two computers with an Ethernet cable or using wireless.
Ethernet works great, IF you have two FUNCTIONAL machines. The great thing about Firewire Target Disk mode was that if the HD/OS was corrupted, or the computer was for some reason unbootable you could still get data off of it quickly, without tools or special equipment.
The hard drive is fairly easy to remove on the aluminum Macbook. I would remove it and install it in an external Firewire enclosure temporarily to transfer your files quickly and reliably, then put the drive back in the Macbook. Firewire Target disk mode has saved my rear several times on every machine I have owned by letting me fix a non-booting Mac.

Time Machine Data Transfer - From FireWire Drive to Time Capsule - HELP!
I've been searching for weeks for a solution to my problem. Here's the story I've come across since I installed Leopard on Oct. 26, 2007.
I first installed Leopard on my Early 2006 MacBook and set up Time Machine with a 200GB external FireWire drive. Since then, things have been fine, until Time Machine started deleting the oldest backups. I'm a pack-rat and hated this feeling of losing data. So, I now have a few months worth of backups on my 200GB FireWire drive.
The Time Capsule is released, I finally talk myself into getting one and transferring my old data from the 200GB drive to my 1TB TC.
I did some researching through forums about how to move data from one Time Machine drive to another, so I took the concept and wanted to apply it to my Time Capsule. I made a DMG image of my 200GB drive, in order to move the data. I figured if I can make an image, copy it, and open it on the Time Capsule - all will go smoothly - just as some had mentioned they've done with external drives.
Now, I have a 164GB DMG image of my Time Machine, with no hope in sight of gaining it back. I've tried taking the image, using Disk Utility, and restoring my original 200GB external with the imaged Time Machine data, but whenever I do, I come across error messages.
In Disk Utility, I've done the following steps:
    * Disk Image is found on Time Capsule
    * I select the 200GB drive and select 'Restore'
    * I drag and drop the Disk Image to the 'Image' field
    * I drag and drop the 200GB drive into the the 'Restore' field
    * Select 'Erase Destination'
    * Select 'Restore'
    * I get the warning message that I'll erase the drive - I proceed
    * I enter my password
    Error message pops up:
"Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore."
I select the image in Disk Utility, then proceed with the following steps:
    * Click on "Image" then down to "Scan Image for Restore"
    * I enter my password
After hours of waiting, I get another error message:
    "Unable to scan. (Broken pipe)."
I'm going to see, after transferring the DMG to the Time Capsule, if I can drag-and-drop the files from the Time Capsule drive onto the 200GB hard drive.
IF anyone has any more suggestions, please let me know!

32 updates on this Mac since December 2007 - Hardware, software, OS...
They keep coming at about 6 or 7 a month. Some of them I don't care about, but several are essential. 10.5.3 has been seeded to the testers a couple of times and will probably show up in the next few weeks. Jaguar wasn't worth a d*mn until 10.2.6, Panther about 10.3.4, Tiger about 10.4.4 - I'd say we are ahead or on schedule Too bad I can't get Apple to fix Spaces. I wish they'd focus on what I want but I guess some take more time than others.

  • Computer to Computer Data Transfer Script

    Hi Guys,
We have a new customer that wants to transfer specific data (My Documents from D:, Desktop, Favorites, Dictionary and Signatures from C:) from old computer to new computer over network logged in as user. We have existing scripts that backup to server
starting with VBscript that prompts for user name and then it kicks off a batch file that has all files to copied from computer to server. For restore to new computer, we have another script restores from server.
I'm looking to create a VBscript that can run from flash drive and detects source computer it's run from. Then a box to appear that prompts "Enter Username" and "Enter Destination Computer Name". Once info is entered, a batch file that
has all files to be copied from Source to Destination, eg D:\My Documents, C:\Users\username\Desktop, C:\Users\username\Favorites, C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\UProof, C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Signatures.
I found some scripting online but can seem to piece together anything that works. I am new to the scripting world and would appreciate any assistance I can get.
    Thank you!!

That utility is built into Windows.  It is the migration wizard.  It will migrate across network, able or via files.

You can also use the USMT for domain migrations.
If you are not a technician or are not trained in Windows desktop administration then you might ask your system administrator or vendor for help in using Windows.  Windows has had builtin migration tools that do exactly what you ask since Windows XP.

  • What camcorder/DV transfer without Firewire port?

    Afternoon all,
I bought my MacBook a couple of years ago.  I was specifically told that my Sony HandyCam was compatible, however, didn't realise that I could only transfer via iLink and of course, MacBook has no Firewire port.  iMovie doesn't recognise my HandyCam via USB at all.
    1.  Does anyone have any better ideas on how I can transfer DV to my MacBook?
    2.  I'm now looking to get a new camcorder.  Any suggestions on where I can start my research on camcorders that will be compatible with my MacBook?
    I'm grateful for any suggestions.
    Kind regards.

Have you tried to simply copy the video to your desktop with a USB cable? You could then import that file into iMovie. You may find some helpful information here:

i have a brand new macbook pro that i was doing a data transfer via firewire from an old macbook, it got stopped/cable pulled out, now have spinning wheel of death that wont stop, how do i reboot/stop the wheel of death and start again? (this time il use time machine transfer)

Just power off the machine(s). Shut them down. Migration Assistant gets 'stuck' sometimes - best way to migrate really isn't over Firewire, though it will certainly work, but with both machines hardwired via Ethernet to the same router. You can use a TM backup, too, of course, provided that it's recent. Which is the best? Your choice. I've done it both ways and have a preference for MA, but TM restore can be a bit faster and less quarrelsome.

  • Help me find ghost files after botched data transfer

I just bought a new MacBook. While setting up the OS upon first boot, I hooked up my old machine (which had a dead LCD, hence the new machine) for the data transfer. Well, after a solid hour+ of data transfer over firewire, there was an error, after which the old machine didn't seem to be a valid source of data transfer for the OS.
So I boot up the new machine and none of my files appear to have transferred. Ok, I can transfer important things by hand, so it's no problem. I boot the old machine holding down T and it appears as a mounted volume, from which I copy my files.
Here's the issue: that first, failed attempt to transfer files left "ghost" files somewhere eating up my HD space. Ie, if I sum up the size of all my files and folders in the / directory, they add up to around 60 Gb, which seems reasonable given all my music and such. But if I look at my main partition volume in Disk Utility, it claims I'm using a full on 179 Gb, which is totally unreasonable.
So there's around 120 Gb of "ghost" usage laying around. How do I track it down?

Log out and then into the newly created user account. To transfer them, choose Go to Folder from the FInder's Go menu, provide /Users/Shared/ as the path, and drag them there.

  • ERec - Data Transfer from eRec system to HCM System

    Hello All,
Currently am able to do the data transfer from eRec system to HCM system but am finding some inconsistencies here.
In our scenario we are on ehp4 and no XI in place, We are doing via RFC only. Stanalone eRec system
So here are few queries and if someone can address these would be really great and appreciate the help
    1) While i do the data transfer activity, when i select activity and don not give the Hiring Date in the Org Assignment Column it throws an error "When transferring data using XI, the hiring date must be specified". But am not using XI, then why should it give this error?
Also is it not possible that i do the data transfer without any hiring date?
Also there are two options Planned and Completed. When i do the data transfer i keep it in planned status and do it it automatically saying that Complete
    Is this correct
2)Now when i do the data transfer it is getting appeared in HR system when i execute the PA48 tcode.
    Here my queries are
    a) Suppose i do a data transfer for a candidate Abc on 10.10.2010 and run the PA48 tcode it appears in the list as hire date 10.10.2010
Now as a recruiter am again doing the data transfer for the same candidate Abc for 11.10.2010 and againg when i see PA48 there is again another entry for the Abc candidate for hiring
Is this correct process. How should these duplicate entries to be avoided. Pls help me
    3) Also i case if I want additions infotypes to be transferred in PA48 how should we go for this development
Pls help me in these queries

  • RT - How can I make data transfer to host faster?

    Hi
I have created a program that acquires data on FPGA then transfers them to RT so RT can send them up to the windows host once UI is connected.
The program is based on message type structure as in NI's examples.
However, I have one problem the data to windows host is not transferred fast enough.
Pic1 shows the offending bit of code and FPGA.png what's hiding in the subVi.
FPGA is meant to acquire to cycles of a sine wave. In this case it approximately 40 ms of data at 25us sampling rate (40kS/s 8 channels). Later the data is sent to the host. As you can see I have a dedicated stream for data only and a different one for message passing.
If I disable the code in the case structure this loop executes in 39-40 ms, however when I start sending the data to the host the rate drops to 57-60 ms per iteration and that sooner or later leads to buffer overflow.
I have experimented with passing the acquired data to a different loop using a queue but that wasn't faster. I have also tried pipelining but that did not speed it up either. Would you have any suggestions how I could improve my transfer rates?
    Thank you.

    Hi barteklul,
There are 2 main methods of achieving fast data transfer between RT and Host PC:
    1. Using the "Shared Variables", they allow you to transfer data deterministically from
RT to Host PC, usually are used to monitor data.
Please have a look at this article:
    http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/370622J-01/lvrtconcepts/rt_projectvariable/
    This is the example code:
    https://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-15928
The only disadvantage of such method is that if for example RT gets data really fast
your Host PC can miss some samples.
    2. In order to receive all data from RT
(guaranteed 100% data transfer without missing any samples) "Network Streams" should be used.
It is a little bit more complex to implement, but if you want to store data to the file "Network Streams"
are strongly suggested. In addition "Network Streams" are not deterministic.
For more details about network streams please read this article:
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/12267/en/
At the moment I see that you are using "Network Streams" to transfer data and also I can see that you have some timing on RT
which can slow down the data transfer rate. I suggest you to transfer data to Host PC as soon as it comes into the FIFO.
Also if you transfer data just to monitor it, I suggest you to try Shared Variables method.
I hope that you will this information useful!

  • Data Transfer to NEW computer--how to??

    Hello all!!
Received just today a new Powerbook and was about to start the transfer of data and other "stuff" from my old computer (800 MHz flat-panel iMac) to the new computer.
With regard to APPLICATIONS, as I have been told before, I will be installing any applications FRESH on the new computer and will set the preferences and other information as needed once installed.
With regard to other "regular DATA"...Word files, MP3 files, text files, PDFs, image files, etc...the NON-application/NON-system files. Is there a special way that I should go about with the data transfer other than simply hooking p the computers via Firewire and dragging the data files to the new location on the new computer?
The amount of data I will be transferring will probably be in the range of 10 to 20 GB.
Also, while I'm doing this data transfer...before, during or after...once I have transfer this information to the new computer file locations, should I be doing a permissions repair or defrag or other "cleanup" operation??
    Thanks for your help!!
    Scott

Hi, Scott. The time to make sure both your Macs are in perfect order is before you transfer your files. On each Mac, boot to your OS installer CD or DVD and Repair Disk, repeating the routine until you get two successive "Appears OK" verdicts. Then reboot to your hard drive and Repair Permissions. Then use the Terminal or MacJanitor to force the daily, weekly and monthly background maintenance tasks to be performed. These steps should assure that your data and your HD directories are in good shape before you transfer your files.
It can't hurt to repair permissions again on the new drive after you copy the files to it, but it probably isn't really necessary. Be sure to copy them to the same places on your new PB's HD that they occupied on the old one, if the same OS version and applications will be installed on both machines.
Nothing that you copy will be fragmented after it arrives on the new machine, and Tiger will take care of most fragmentation that occurs later without needing any help from you.

When using Migration Assistant to transfer from one Mac to another Mac, as soon as I get to the point where it says to connect the firewire to each computer, it says "You might not be able to transfer using Firewire on this computer". What do I use then?

I don't know if it's the Tiger or the Leopard.
10.4.x is Tiger; 10.5.x is Leopard.
I've not used the Tiger version of Migration Assistant (just Leopard and later), and there's not much in the way of Apple tech articles for it anymore.
Since the message says "might not," I don't see any reason not to give it a try.  At worst, it will fail and perhaps leave a partially-transferred user account on the G5.  If that happens, we can deal with it.
I'd make sure the connections are snug and secure, and try it.
Good luck, and keep us posted.
I don't have any backups of the G4 and I don't have an external drive and I don't know anyone who has one.
If your data is important to you, invest in one . . . soon, and start making regular backups.  They're not very expensive (some as cheap as $50, good ones perhaps $100). Disk drives fail, especially after a few years, other things go wrong, and even the most careful users make mistakes now and then.

    Hello,
Everytime I make a data transfer, my computer slow down, and sometimes freeze during a few seconds, work for a fraction of seconds and freeze again. I don"t understand why.
As an example, here is a bench of files i transfered during a syncing with Grsync
It took about 12h to sync 64Gb.
I've read a lot of topics talking about this problem but nothing works. I tried to switch off the SWAP and setting the vm.dirty_ratio and vm.background_dirty_ratio but nothing works.
I'm making the trasfer between two Western Digital USB 2.0 external hard drive in NTFS.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance

My 3GS is dying and it's synced to an older computer.  I have tons of datafiles as well as apps, music, text messages, etc. that I need to get moved to the new iphone4 I'm getting.  Then I need to move the sync to a newer computer so that I can sync the new phone and new computer.
I understand how to get my apps to transfer to a new pc.  That's not the issue.  It's getting ALL the data from the 3GS to the 4 and then to a new computer.

Thanks much, that's very helpful for step one (getting old phone onto new phone).  Very clear.
However, I still have the problem of moving to the new computer.  How do I move the sync to the new computer after the new phone is set up?
