COMPUTER UNEXPECTEDLY SHUT OFF.DAMAGED ITL AN LOST XML FILE ... SAVE FERRIS

OK. Here's my situation. I have an HP notebook running on VISTA. ITUNES version 8.1.1....... My computer shut off abruptly while I was running ITUNES and after I restarted it and started up Itunes, I got the damaged ITL message. No big deal, I still have all my songs in their designated folder and I'll just import the XML to get all my playlists back in action. I've done this at least 10 times already. Works like a charm everytime. Oh S#!T,... my XML was wiped out during the shut down. I have a program that can retrieve files after recycle bin deletion and the XML is no where to be found. SOOOOOO here's my questiion. When my computer S#!Ted in my cereal, it split my ITL into two seperate damged ITL's. One 32 MB and the other 14 MB. I know the XML is just a backup of the ITL and I frequently update my XML twice a week to make sure no B.S. could bestow it's bad self all up in my shizz. I just never figured to make a copy of the XML because everytime this has happened, the good XML was always there to use. (NOW I KNOW)Soooo, I need to know how to build an new XML from the two damaged itl's. That way I can just import the two new xml's and then save, thus making itunes create a new fresh XML from my two provided and restoring my itunes to it's original self. My problem is I can't get ITUNES to read my two damaged ITL's. Yes, I've done the name change method, no love. I even downloaded the same version of ITUNES that I run onto my home computer, which runs on XP, so I could try the system cache method. No love there either. I've stumbled upon a page where a person stated that they were able to manually poke around with their ITL file and forcing ITUNES to repair it. However this person was a computer whiz and I am sooooo totally not. Anyone dealt with this scenario before? I tried praying to GOD but all he said was "THAT'S WHAT YOU GET FOR PUTTING SHANIA TWAIN'S ..THAT DON'T IMPRESS ME MUCH.. ON YOUR IPOD YOU F%#KING DORK!!!" and I was like, "dude, it is undeniably impossible to not have a smile on on your face for the duration of that righteous classic. Then he just ****** into his hand and released it an inch away from my nostrils, followed by some bird flippage and nut sack grab. So I'm gonna need some help with this one. Thanks Ahead

Welcome to AD!
+I need to know how to build an new XML from the two damaged itl's.+
Umm, you can't. The ITL is the important file. You can rebuild an XML from an ITL, but not vice versa, completely. The ITL is a proprietary Apple file and there are no public tools for working with it.
+I frequently update my XML twice a week+
I am sorry to tell you, you should have been backing up the ITL file, instead.
You might have some luck if you recently updated iTunes to a new version. It saves old ITL versions in a folder named Previous iTunes Libraries. They have names like
iTunes Library 2009-04-06.itl
which would be from April 6th. Preass and hold the shift key while opening itunes, choose that file when prompted, and see if it gives you any joy.

  • Are disk images ejected when computer is shut off?

My computer just shut off on me unexpectedly, something is wrong with me and I need to take it to get fixed, but I had a disk image open with personal files in it including social security information and the likes, and I wouldn't want them to be seen by whoever is fixing my laptop, and I was just wondering if it would have been ejected when the computer shut off? Thank you!

Yes, they will be ejected. However, if the image files are on your hard drive, then anyone could gain access if they aren't encrypted images.

  • Computer randomly shuts off..

Whenever I'm on battery power (even if it's at 99%) if I open up a program that uses up a lot of memory (like Photoshop CS2, or even Powerpoint) the computer automatically shuts off. I need this problem to stop because I use those programs on a daily basis and don't want to keep my computer plugged in all the time.

My iBook G4 is doing the same exact thing (of course it takes a much less taxing program, cause its a G4). Anyhow, this is happening to lots of people, at the same time. Thus, it would be strange if we all started experiencing logic board problems, etc at the same time with different model and year laptops. This sounds very similar to 2004ish occasion when the OSX update that brought us widgets caused rapid battery depletion and heat in iBooks (and maybe other computers). Disabling the widgets with 3rd party software solved that problem until Apple quietly fixed in subsequent update. Thus, I STRONGLY suspect this is once again a software issue. I hope someone has found the offending code and devised a fix. BTW, it only happens on battery, I have tried 2 different batteries one is very new, it has happened as high as 90% charge on a battery with 80% capacity left. If anyone has a suggestions or info (aside from it's my logic board, its my battery connection, etc) would be great, I basically can't use my laptop without my power cord, which makes it a portable desktop.
    Thanks.

  • Help! Computer arbitrary shuts off since installing new iPod Nano!

I got an error message when I installed my new iPod nano (sadly I didn't think to write it down so now I don't know what it said) but ever since then my computer just shuts off. iTunes doesn't have to be open for it to happen... It's even shut off in the middle of shutting down! I've tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling but my computer still seems to have a mind of its own. I don't have the slightest clue how to "uninstall" my ipod and I think ITS the problem. Any suggestions would be VERY appreciated! I'm so frustrated!

ever since then my computer just shuts off.
Are you getting any sort of blue screen prior to the PC rebooting? If so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x\[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
If the blue screen mentions a specific file (for example, “ati3duag.dll”), let us know what that is called too. (Exact spelling, please.)
Here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
If you're not seeing a blue screen (or if you’re just seeing a flash of a blue screen before the PC reboots), we can use the following technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.
With those settings in place, does a blue screen appear before the PC reboots?

  • If I stop moving the mouse my computer will shut off?

I turn on everything works fine but if I let it go with out moving the mouse the whole computer just shuts off.

Is this limited to Aurora? If you need a release build to test, you can use the "Portable" version from here: [http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Mozilla Firefox%2C Portable Ed./Mozilla Firefox%2C Portable Edition 27.0.1/]
Some monitors have an option to reduce power consumption or adapt to the brightness of content. It seems from past threads that this can affect Firefox even if other browsers are not affected. Example: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/981249 Screen dims].

  • Connecting IPod to computer causes computer to shut off

This has never happened before. I plugged my IPod into the same USB port I always do for the first time since downloading the latest ITunes update and my computer shut off. Anything else I plug into the USB port works fine, it is only a problem with my IPod. I can use one of my other USB ports so I guess this isn't urgent, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen or has any ideas/advice? Thanks!

Exact same thing is happening to me now after downloading the new iTunes 9 version. Did you ever find a solution?

  • Computer keeps shutting off to sleep

This is by no means a new problem for me. This happened to me before, someone here very helpfully posted that my computer might fall under the RevB warranty - which it did. However, when I took it to an apple care center it was taken and the guy there replaced the power supply on my computer. One month later, it starts shutting down again, I annoyingly went on to cope with it since. However, it has recently gotten much worse. I have heard a chirping/clicking sound coming from my computer along with frequent shutdowns of the computer - sometimes it has good days other times it has bad days. The other day I came in, my computer was turned off, but the fans on the computer were running full blast, I had to unplug my computer from the outlet. My question is - what the heck is going on. I took it into the same apple care center and the guy said it sounded like a problem with the hard drive or the temperature detection inside the computer. He suggested that I monitor the temperature using a widget and it seems that the harddrive temperature is normal - at about 70-90 degrees while the cpu temperature readings are at about 130-160 degrees. What the heck is going on here? and what is the best way to go about fixing it. And lastly - what do you think it is going to cost for me to fix it (no, I'm an idiot, I didn't get the apple protection plan). Oh - and EVEN MORE - how can I make sure that this won't get "Fixed" and then have it happen to me again? Thank you for all of the help I receive.

    Hi there!
It's not that uncommon that the repair you received through the apple repair extention is done again if your machine is exhibting the same power or video issues. I have read here at the iMac forum, some Rev A and B iMacs being repaired up to 3 times for the same issues...
Whether the "problem" is completely fixed is another issue...

  • Computer inadvertently shuts off

    Hi there,
I have an HP Pavillion a6600f that's been upgraded to windows seven ultimate (32 bit). In the last  couple of weeks, it has been shutting off randomly(?) while I'm using it. In the last couple days it has happened 3+ times each day. I have run malwarebytes full scan twice, as well as a bitdefender full system scan once. There are no problems. I have checked for hard drive problems (tune-up utilities). I have upgraded all drivers that I could from the hp site. I have opened up the tower and cleaned it out extensively. Probably made no difference, it isn't even close to overheating and it wasn't that dirty. It doesn't make any funny sounds. Yet, the problem persists.
There is no one particular activity that I'm doing on the computer when it shuts off. I could be watching videos, surfing the web, playing games, listening to music,  etc., or some combination of things. Possibly after just a few minutes to a few hours, suddenly, the screen, without any warning whatsoever, will fade (fade takes about 1sec), and then the screen is black. Sound will continue for about 5-10 seconds, then stops, and then the whole pc will shut down (screen is black throughout). If I wait a few minutes (it restarts eventually, which i find rather odd), or start it up again (without switching the power bar completely off), then when I turn it on and log in, it will resume to exactly where I left off.
Now the question is: is my power supply failing? Should I back up my pc to my 2TB seagate external drive right now to be safe, or is there nothing to worry about? I figure that if the problem worsens, I'm just going to save whatever I can from my hp and buy a new computer. It's a few years old now, but how can I be sure that the power supply is failing? Could there be any other causes?
Any support is much appreciated. Thanks in advance,
    Troy

    Troy, welcome to the forum.
The symptoms that you describe certainly do sound like a PSU problem.  It is surprising how many different types of problems can be caused by a failing PSU.  Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot the problem.  The PSU is the most replaced component in a computer.
I definitely suggest doing a backup of your personal data.  I do this at least weekly; especially data and photos that I can't replace.

    Hi Jassi,
Thank you for the follow up. Please place your device into recovery mode by using the method outlined below.
Placing your device into recovery mode
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
If the issues persist after restoring your iPhone 4 (or if you are having further issues restoring the device), please Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively you can bring the iPhone 4 in to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for inspection & diagnosis.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.
