Computer very slow to do anything. Takes minutes to even move to trash.

How can I speed up computer? It takes a long time for anything to happen. It even takes minutes to move items to trash!

Hi Henry,
How old is it?
How much RAM is installed?
Exactly which model is it?
How much free space is available on the HD?
Have you tried anything, like repairing permission or verifying/repairing disk?

  • Running so slow, navigating to anything takes minutes, what do I do?

My computer is running so slow, if I launch anything-including turning on the computer it takes forever to open.  Moving around once open is the same.  I don't know what to do.

Create a new User go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the apps in this new account, if they work the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
There are some simple troubleshooting steps you can take.
Be sure you drive is not overly full. Rule of thumb would be over 85%.
(First, be sure you have a good backup, or create one now.)
If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up in Safe Mode  (It will take more time to startup because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps functions correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving/Users/yourname/Library/Fonts to your desktop.
    * Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library"
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
EDIT: Also, pls go to your Apple menu > About this Mac and let us know Processor and Memory listed.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Itunes is very slow to load and takes forever to recognize iphone

My itunes has been running VERY slow. It takes several minutes to open, then it is unuseable for another several minutes. Here it can browse my library but my iphone doesn't show up. after this it takes five to ten minutes to recognize the iphone. it was working yesterday when I updated my iphone to 4.3.5, then suddenly this happened.
Any clues? I installed the most up to date version and it has the same symptoms and eventually says iTunes was unable to load data class information from sync services. Reconnect or try again later

I was able to get my iTunes functional again after disabling a lot of my windows services -- use this thread for your reference:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2292?viewlocale=en_US
I haven't pinpointed exactly which service(s) were causing the iTunes slowdown, as I haven't had time to test re-enabling all of them yet.  But so far I've just disabled the services that I know I don't need anymore and iTunes has been running like a champ =)

  • After 10.5.2 update, computer very slow

Downloaded/installed update without incident. Microsoft Office programs are now very slow to open and very slow to perform certain tasks, like trashing an email. Emptying trash in the Finder sometimes works/sometimes doesn't. When it doesn't, I get a dialog box saying "You can't open Trash because Trash is being emptyed" or words to that effect. Force quitting hung aps usually does not work. It is sometimes possible to shut down or restart using the commands in the Apple menu but I've had to just power cycle the computer twice today when the commands didn't work. I tried verifying permissions but even that seemed to hang. Verifying the disk worked and it says the disk is ok. Any ideas on how to solve this? It almost feels like I've run out of memory but Activity Monitor says otherwise. Stumped.

I had some of the exact same issues. After I installed the 10.5.2 update and noticed these issues, I ran Software Update again and found a "Leopard Graphics Update 1.0".
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/leopardgraphicsupdate10.html
Once I installed this graphics update, my computer was back to normal.

  • Tiger 10.4.8 running one computer very slow...

I have 2 main computers in my photography studio. Running all with Tiger
    10.4.8.
One is a powerbook G4 with 17" screen. This one seems to be running OK.
The other is a G4 tower (733 processor - memory 1GB) and this computer seems to be running all apps very slow (Photoshop, Appleworks, printing, saving files ect.). I have begun have begun having problems on 'start-up' of a 'gray screen' saying I have to restart the computer (not exact on what it says but sure you all have seen it before...).
I run 'cocktail', 'disk warrior', 'techtool deluxe' and the 'disk utility' on a regular basis (at least once a week) and they don't seem to help.
I have 2 firewire external HD's hooked up to it (got alot of photos to work with).
Am wondering if anyone else is having a problem since updating to 10.4.8 or if the HD is just getting ready to end it's life?
    Any help is appreciated!!!

So I think that issue has been cleared up."Hard to say without seeing the panic logs as to what may have caused the panic. If they return, follow the troubleshooting road map in my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ.
    2. You wrote: "Photoshop CS2, Bridge and even Appleworks (which I don't use all that often) is still running very, very slow. "Some additional suggestions:• See the "Troubleshooting performance problems" section of my "Tuning Mac OS X Performance" FAQ.
    • An errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause on the affected computer. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    • Try troubleshooting the FireWire drives by process of elimination: try running without them, then one of them, then the other. If the problem occurs when one of the FireWire drives is connected, it could be a problem with the FireWire drive, the cable, or the FireWire port.
    • To rule out broader hardware problems with the Mac itself, run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) that came the affected computer. See my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ for comprehensive advice on using the AHT in troubleshooting.3. You wrote: "Do you think that my HD (running the operating system) is just slowly beginning to die??? "You can rule that out by checking its SMART status. See Step 1 of the Procedure in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ if you need step-by-step instructions.

  • Doubts about going back to Leopard because lion made the computer very slow

hi i bought a macbook  pro on 2009 it came with leopard operating system. When lion came into the market i installed it but since then the computer is very slow.
I took it to an apple sotre and they told me that the memory was almost full so i bought an external hard drive where i have now all my music, photos and documents. But the computers is still very slow.
So im thinking about going back to leopard but i have some questions. i hope someone here help me
    1. will i experience any problem synchronizing my iphone 5 or my ipad4?
    2. will i be able to update itunes to the last version?
    3. how shall make a backup of my computer
    4. What do i have to do to restore leopard into my computer
    thanks!

How much RAM does it have..?
To find out, go up on your menu bar to: Apple > About This Mac
If you have no other problems and plenty of free HDD space? Then 2GB of RAM will feel real slow running multiple Apps in Lion or Mountian Lion and you should try upgrading the RAM 4GB or more before moving back to Snow Leopard.

  • Very slow or non-existent broadband in the evening...

Why is it that when you contact BT about a slow or non-existent BT broadband every evening, they doggedly maintain that testing the line and waiting seven days will solve the problem? My BT broadband works wonderfully well during the daytime but slows to a standstill in the evening, not really a line problem, rather a bit of exchange congestion I think, unless of course you believe in conspiracies.
What if BT are actually setting the lines that have the old white HomeHub and Internet phone to a lower priority than the Infinity lines, to boost the performance of the new connections and encourage, (force), the current HomeHub users to upgrade? I rather like having two telephone lines, and would rather not upgrade and lose the second line, but I feel that this is not what BT want.
So if I'm forced to upgrade and lose the Internet phone it's off to Sky, those Murdochs need all the help they can get.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions About OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utility is: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior for defragmentation of older drives, disk repair, disk scans, formatting, partitioning, disk copy, and benchmarking.
Four outstanding sources of information on Mac maintenance are:
    1. OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
    2. Mac maintenance Quick Assist
    3. Maintaining Mac OS X
    4. Mac Maintenance Guide
    Periodic Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) See Mac OS X- About background maintenance tasks. If you are running Leopard or later these tasks are run automatically, so there is no need to use any third-party software to force running these tasks.
If you are using a pre-Leopard version of OS X, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced after Tiger.  (These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion and should not be installed.)
    Defragmentation
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive except when trying to install Boot Camp on a fragmented drive. But you don't need to buy third-party software. All you need is a spare external hard drive and Carbon Copy Cloner.
    Cheap and Easy Defragmentation
You will have to backup your OS X partition to an external drive, boot from the external drive, use Disk Utility to repartition and reformat your hard drive back to a single volume, then restore your backup to the internal hard drive. You will use Carbon Copy Cloner to create the backup and to restore it.
      1. Get an empty external hard drive and clone your internal drive to the
           external one.
      2. Boot from the external hard drive.
      3. Erase the internal hard drive.
      4. Restore the external clone to the internal hard drive.
Clone the internal drive to the external drive
      1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
      2. Select the Source volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      3. Select the Destination volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      4. Be sure the Block Copy button is not depressed or is ghosted.
      5. Click on the Clone button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive and click on the upward pointing arrow button.
    After startup do the following:
    Erase internal hard drive
      1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the
drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is
failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be
reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the
           DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the
drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait
           until the process has completed.
Restore the clone to the internal hard drive
      1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
      2. Select the Source volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      3. Select the Destination volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      4. Be sure the Block Copy button is not selected or is ghosted.
      5. Click on the Clone button.
Destination means the internal hard drive. Source means the external startup drive.
Note that the Source and Destination drives are swapped for this last procedure.
    Malware Protection
As for malware protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. Starting with Lion Apple has included built-in malware protection that is automatically updated as necessary.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection:
    1. Mac Malware Guide.
    2. Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware
    3. Macintosh Virus Guide
For general anti-virus protection I recommend only using ClamXav, but it is not necessary if you are keeping your computer's operating system software up to date. You should avoid any other third-party software advertised as providing anti-malware/virus protection. They are not required and could cause the performance of your computer to drop.
    Cache Clearing
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner 7.0.9, Maintenance 1.6.8, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache files can cause slowness, kernel panics, and other issues. Although this is not a frequent nor a recurring problem, when it does happen there are tools such as those above to fix the problem.
If you are using Snow Leopard or earlier, then for emergency cleaning install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. (AppleJack works with Snow Leopard or earlier.)
    Installing System Updates or Upgrades
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
    Backup and Restore
Having a backup and restore strategy is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your computer. Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner.
      2. Deja Vu
      3. SuperDuper!
      4. Synk Pro
      5. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance and backup and restore.
Always have a current backup before performing any system updates or upgrades.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity or 20 GBs, whichever is greater, as free space. Avoid installing utilities that rely on Haxies, SIMBL, or that alter the OS appearance, add features you will rarely if ever need, etc. The more extras you install the greater the probability of having problems. If you install software be sure you know how to uninstall it. Avoid installing multiple new software at the same time. Install one at a time and use it for a while to be sure it's compatible.

  • Re: Satellite C855-1GN very slow performance - booting procedure takes 15min

My sister bought a Satellite C855-1GN installed with Win7 64-bit last December (typical - 4 days out of guarantee now) and for sometime has found it getting slower and slower.
She asked me to take a look at it for her, and she is quite right, this laptop is appalling unresponsive for even the most basic of tasks like opening Windows Explorer, which takes over a minute to open.
It's a similar story for pretty much any button press on this machine, sometimes longer depending on what has been clicked. Even getting the thing booted up from power button press to desktop being visible (let alone usable) takes a staggering 15 minutes plus.
Entering text such the password for user to login to Windows, or a URL in any browser (IE and chrome installed by default) results in the spinning circle equivalent to an egg timer for at least 60 seconds before anything happens, as does pretty much any button click. For example, Windows start button or right click on anything whatsoever.
Initially I suspected some kind of malware / too much rubbish installed. Ran full scans, no issues. Disabled / uninstalled all of the bloatware I could find, still no difference.
Shut down all power saving features, still appallingly slow.
Windows Experience / Task Manager / resmon all report nothing out of the ordinary nor anything eating resources. Out of desperation, reset to Out Of Box Experience condition using the hidden recovery partition... which took over 24 hours to complete, and that's not an exaggeration.
I went to bed, then to work for the day, and it still hadn't finished until I'd been home for a couple of hours.
This machine now has a completely fresh (albeit Toshiba specific) Win7 install, and runs just as horrifically slowly. I'm still waiting for desktop, 17 minutes after powering it on before typing this. It's had several reboots, and is not still installing anything.
6GB of RAM is more than ample. Whilst not a P3, 5 or 7, there is no way that an Intel B950 dual core processor running at an admittedly not top class 2.10GHz can be this slow (especially as it wasn't until a few months ago), I've had awful Celerons in my time which have been infinitely faster than this.
Has anyone else had similarly pathetic performance from this model? If so, we're any of you able to resolve it? Or should we just bin this paperweight?

    Hi
In the past we have discussed many times about similar issues and some people were not satisfied about performance of brand new notebooks preinstalled with original recovery image.
As small example you can check this thread. Generally speaking there is described what you should do with this machine. You must, I like to use word optimize, preinstalled operating system. It will definitely run better and faster.
Other way there can also be problem with HDD. If your sister likes this machine I recommend you a small investment in new hardware. Exchange HDD with SSD. SSDs are not so expensive anymore so you can buy one, I would say, with 250GB and I think it is enough free space for their work.
You cannot imagine how fast they are. I use one on my old P500. Notebook starts in 40 seconds only.
Im pretty sure with new SSD and optimized original Win7 that you got with this notebook your sister will have good and pretty fast machine.
