Computer waking up....huh.

My computer has done this twice now. It seems to wake up a night when sleeping. I don't really need it to. So, why would it do this? Is someone trying to access my computer at night or is it just acting weird? Is there something I can do to figure out why it wants to wake up? Or should I just shut it down at night? Thanks for any help!

There isn't a com.apple.AutoWake.plist in the
SystemConfiguration folder. But
com.apple.PowerManagement.plist &
com.apple.systemuiserver.plist are there. What
happened to the other file?
You probably never used the "scheduled" tab in the Energy saver control panel, so they was never one generated. Nothing to worry about.
If I remove these files,
even temporarily will they cause any crashes after
reboot?
No, it will create new ones.
Personally, I shutdown my Mac at night like macer. I also have my computer set to startup at the predetermined time in the morning so it's ready waiting for me.

Try resetting the SMC and the PRAM.
    1. SMC
Read this and follow the instructions for your kind of mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    2. PRAM
    Follow the procedure below:
    1. Power down the machine.
    2. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    command–option–P–R
    3. Press the ‘power on’ button.
    4. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
    5. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up as it should normally.

  • Computer Waking Up at Night

    Hi there,
Have a problem with the desktop waking up at least once every 10 days or so.
Checked all the necessary problem areas: powercfg /devicequery wake_armed returns NONE.
Wake computer options are all off for Scheduled Maintenance, Power/Multimedia, Ethernet.
Noticed the WindowsUpdate entry under Task Scheduler has "Wake the computer to run this task" checked.
Unchecking  and OK (even without unchecking) on the properties dialog box will stall for a few seconds. Then there is an alert "task scheduler service is not available." This was restarted through the scheduler by (successfully) changing
the conditions for that on the TaskScheduler entry.
I suspect that Windows Update is waking the computer but the above doesn't constitute sufficient proof. Nevertheless, the irksome side-effect is that the OS doesn't appear to employ it's configured power saver options after being woken.
So it can stay on for hours (or days) without turning off. (Bear in mind the Power Saver conditions work when the computer is manually started.)
    Any suggestions?

Looking at the Windows System Logs, the first thing of interest in the second wake-up was the following logged at 4:01:26 AM.
The system time has changed to ‎2014‎-‎07‎-‎27T18:01:22.500000000Z from ‎2014‎-‎07‎-‎27T16:25:06.322889900Z.
Change Reason: System time synchronized with the hardware clock.
There are 0x1 boot options on this system.
    The boot type was 0x2.
    ---(usual boot up messages)---
The system has returned from a low power state.

    Wake Source: Unknown
Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort1, was issued.
Was the computer woken to adjust the clock? The BIOS doesn't cater for system clock changes.
As a matter of interest, what do the values of Sleep Time and Wake Time actually represent?
Is it total wake/sleep since last boot? In the above scenario the system was put to sleep at 2:25:04 AM, sleep for only 90 mins.

  • Computer Waking Prematurely From Sleep

My computer is waking prematurely from sleep.
When I type in powercfg -lastwake it says that it is the Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family USB xHCI Host Controller - 8CB1
I can't seem to disable this from waking the computer. Can anyone help?

    Hi anerickso,
Have you tried to select the power settings (Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power) under Device Manager for the Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family USB xHCI Host Controller? (You may check the related USB devices with
    the above settings)
As this is 3rd-party products related, you may also consider seek help at the Intel sdie and see if they could offer any helpful suggestions.

  • Computer waking up

Have been putting this off as it might be more complicated than i would like. My iMac randomly wakes up. I have tried many things, have checked all settings that might apply.  Have had macs for 4 to 5 years and things have been ok.  This is first Intel.... I don't have any peripherals. no printers or whatever else might be connected up.. very simple.. a keyboard, mouse and ethernet cord.
Computer goes to sleep obediently as directed but can wake up from 15 mins later to couple of hours or randomly through the night, it then goes back to sleep according to settings.
Have tried 2 keyboards, an eMac board and Macally.  Changed mice but both are the old G3 iMac coloured mice cos i like them and so far have been doing the job.
My eMac is close to the iMac so i shut it down incase that was the problem.
I read somehere to look up the consul which was quite interesting. It showed the wake ups  and mentions USB 3. I believe the iMac 4,1 has only USB 2, or do they mean something is plugged into the 3rd usb port?  Only 2 things are plugged in, i haven't actually unplugged the mouse to see if that makes a difference.  might be worth doing?
I have tried to attach a screeshot of the consul report but it isn't allowed.  Wording is Wake Reason USB3 but also The USB device(Port 1 of hub at 0.5d000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2).
It seems more definite about the USB3 but i don't thinkl i have usb3
I can live with this as it doesn't seem a mjor problem but it is perplexing and i would fix it if i could.
    Thanks.

Hello BDAqua.. thank you for repsonding. Yes i was aware of the Bluetooth possibility and turned it off but no change. Anyhow just checked Airport settings and it is turned on, hadn't thought to look at that one so i shall turn it off. I assume it isn't required for the wireless modem connection.
Failing that i will unplug the mouse.
I'll need to watch it for a couple of days.  Will get back you. i now know i can't award with "this helped me" cos i then can't change it to "this solved etc".
I will give a rating later, whichever way it goes the answer has been of help.

  • Computer not waking up - please help!

I recently updated my computer to snow leopard. I have a 13 in MacBook aluminum with version 10.6.4. I recently began having issues with the computer waking up from sleep after watching videos on websites like hulu.com. After watching the movie, I close the laptop, wait until the computer is asleep and then attempt to reopen the computer to login back in and the login screen does not appear. It seems as though the computer is trying to wake up as the display screen lightens up but the login window does not appear and touching keys on the keyboard does not help. The only way to bring back the login screen is to do a hard restart. All software (firefox, flash, and all mac updates) has been updated and the problem still persists. Any help would be appreciated!

Try a SMC reset which governs such things.
Personally, I would just close Hulu.

  • Laptop waking up from sleep, then turning off

After I installed snow leapord the only major problem I came across was my computer waking up from sleep mode. Once it wakes up, its on for about 2 minutes then everything turns off. The weird thing is it looks like it goes back to sleep because the macbook pro light where you open the lid is still pulsing, like its trying to wake up. The keyboard lights are off, screen is off. I can hear the disk spinning also. Once it woke up to freeze and go back to sleep.
Is anyone else having this problem?
& it only happens when it comes back from closing the lid while the laptop is still on.

Try resetting some of the hardware involved. See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.

Waking up from sleep with blue screen
Since a few days my MBP wakes up from sleep by showing a blue screen for 30 seconds or more, instead of jumping to the login window (password needed after sleep)
I looked in the forums for blue screen but found many problems non related to this.
    Any ideas?
Could it have to do with the fact that about 4 days ago I upgraded to 4.8 from 4.7?

  • User Name Upon Waking from Sleep

    Hey guys,
We're given the choice of entering a password upon waking from sleep. I kinda want to take it one step further and have the user name erased too so that people have to enter the user name and the password upon the computer waking. Does anyone know how to do this or if it's even possible?
    Thanks for any help.

The only way I can think of would be to log out rather than just put it to sleep or let it go to sleep. However, if you have a good secure password there really isn't too much reason to require the additional step.
There may be a way to do it but I can't think of one.

Creative Cloud: CC Authentication is not remembered in some cases.

    Mark Mapes wrote:
I think it's safe to be a little more specific in the case of the CC authentication bug: the fix was specific to manually syncing settings from Premiere Pro.
Mark, I was going to start a new thread about this but since you brought up sync settings here, I'll ask...
I just had my assistant editor finally download PPro CC since it's more ready now and I had her sync settings with my uploaded settings. It worked great. The only issue was that my computer is a 27" iMac and her's is a 15" macbook pro so when she started a new project all the windows of her new imported workspace were WAY too huge going way off her smaller screen. Is that normal? Is there a quick fix to that to make it quickly "fit" her screen? It's not the end of the world as it took just a few minutes to drag the windows around to fit, but just curious.
Thanks for the bug list btw!

  • T500 shuts down/or freezes when I plug in my AC adapter and now will not start up.

I have had my T500 for two years and I have had endless problems with this laptop. My latest issue started with the computer waking up from sleep mode with a black screen. The computer just froze there and I had to force it to shutdown. When I finally managed to get it started again, the computer gave me an alert saying that a display driver had stopped working. The computer ran fine for a while before it would issue the blue screen of death then have the same black screen issue again and shutdown. Then it got to the point where if I have my computer plugged in it would not even get to the BIOS screen, it would simply loop-restart over and over till I unplugged it, pulled out the battery, put the battery back and turned it on again. Then it would not start at all if I had my adapter plugged in and if I plugged it in at all while the computer was running, it would freeze and after a minute would shut down and again continuously try to start up. Now, the computer will not start in any way, plugged in or no. The lights all turn on like it normally does when it starts up, but then it shuts off and repeats the same process over and over again.
I have no idea what to do this time and unfortunately being a student I do not have enough money to buy an external harddrive to back up everything on this computer. Frankly with all the problems I have had with this thing, I am considering just throwing it out.

Try making a bootable Ubuntu disc and running that for a while. It's possible your Windows install is hosed.

  • Several parts of my Mac are not functioning well

    Greetings,
I own a Mac Pro (2008 model), which, while working perfectly, exhibits some issues. Having been annoyed by one of them today, I've finally managed to ask in this forum (english isn't my native language, so I hope to be clear enough in my phrases).
Here are the problems (I'm asking with the hope that someone knowing better than me can answer me):
1: the CD drive trays are hard to open.
The one on top always require me to use my finger to open (otherwise, the drawer stays closed and the drive finally give up and close the tray back).
The one on the bottom has a similar issue, that happens only the first time in a row (e.g it fails only the first time in a day). Here, it's not the drawer that gets stuck, it's the tray. For instance, I press the option-eject keys and I hear the bottom drive trying to open (and is stuck). I manually open the drawer, but the drive still does not open (and is "closed" after a couple of seconds). Then I can use option-eject again and it finally works.
I've tried "pushing" slightly some components in the hope to unstuck a possibly stuck piece, with no luck. I'm asking for what I can do next (I guess it's bad for the drive to try to force-open and then give up).
(just a note: I say "drawer" for the "outer door" and "tray" for the whole support that comes outside of the drive when it's ejected. I hope these are correct english terms).
2: one of my USB ports (front ones) isn't working, While I know it's common, on a Mac Pro, to have USB ports not working (I've read some pages on this forum), my symptoms are slightly different:
•First, only one of them isn't working (the one below the other), while on every post in this forum, it seems to have been both.
•Second, it seems only data aren't transmitted (power is sent just fine, as my iPhone gets charging but iTunes does not sees it (as does the whole computer)). In the forum, problems are related to USB that does not work at all (while not explicitly said, it appears no power is delivered either).
So I guess it's another kind of problem, but I don't know how to investigate here (is it a driver problem? Only affecting one port? Is it possible?).
3: My graphics card is a bad one (ATI HD 2600, known to be in the series of cards that are likely to fail). When in 10.4.11 (my preferred one), my computer will eventually hang when viewing movies (even short ones) using QuickTime (it appears to hang after some times of use, probably having something to do with temperature, but I'm not sure); the computer then does not update the display anymore, except for the mouse (why is the mouse still updated, by the way?). When not using QuickTime, or when using 10.5, the computer does not hang, but I see noise all around the screen (it's green noise, which seems to be "computed" (e.g happens more in black or grey areas, but also depends on the shape of the region; I try to be as most precise as I can, since screenshots aren't taking the default and I can't therefore post one). The second monitor does not show such problems.
•Will the problem get worse, theoretically?
•How long, based on my description, can I expect to use the current graphics card?
•Why does the problem occurs only on the first monitor (i.e the left connector when the card is in front of us)?
•May I use only the second output and be happy with that? (just giving up using two screens) This question is related to the previous (why only one output has the problem)
•Would watching my QuickTime movies only on the second monitor get rid of the problem (because the first output would not be stimulated that much)?
•Finally, I'm afraid of buying a graphics card to discover it may not be the problem (or the new one isn't working either). It seems these cards are rather expensive, and I can't afford to be wrong, buying a card that wouldn't solve the problem. Are my fears correct?
4: the fans are running almost always, except when I have to force-restart my computer (for instance, when the graphics card issue happens).
When the computer hangs and I restart it, the fans won't run at all (they are fully quiet). Then, I come to the login window and I log in. So the desktop appears, but only the boot partition shows up (my internal drive has 3 partitions). According to Activity Monitor, the other 2 are still being checked (since the hard restart). As long as both partitions are still being checked, the fans are quiet. When the 3rd one appears on the desktop (so all my partitions are mounted), the fans start making noise like they do all the rest of the day.
    So I'm wondering:
•does it actually make sense that fans are sleeping as long as the computer hasn't mounted all the volumes?
•when is the behaviour normal: when the fans aren't running or when they are? (assuming the temperature isn't high, for example when the computer has just started).
5: it has happened to me twice since the beginning of this year: my Mac Pro turns itself on in the middle of the night (and it makes me waking up as well). The console says it's an USB peripheral that made the computer waking up (but since I was sleeping and I have no animal in my room, it sounds strange to me).
Would it be possible that an USB cable, because of changing temperature, is moving a bit and makes the computer waking up? What else can cause that?
6: when I plug a computer in the 2nd ethernet device (the 1st one being connected to the Internet), I can't seem to be able to connect both to the other computer and to the Internet (I can only connect to the one whose position in "System Preferences" ("Network" then "Ports") is above the other; the other one being always not reachable (either web pages can't be loaded, or Finder's connect to window stays at "Searching for host…")). If it's not possible, what's the purpose of 2 ethernet ports?
Sorry for the long message, but I'm always curious (and the message would have been shorter if english was my primary language).
P.S: I used to know computers fairly well in Mac OS 9 days, but Mac OS X has complicated things (and hidden a bunch of them through undocumented error codes and behaviours/logs), that I'm being more curious than I used to be.
Thanks in advance if you can answer some or all of my questions.

I have a 2008 Mac Pro. Don't know where to start addressing your situation but here goes:
    1) go to Apple/support and make sure your SMC version is up to date
    Already done
    2) at the same place search for smc reset or power manager reset
I did that several months ago as well.
    3) two ethernets connected. Example one ethernet port for connector to router which then connects to cable modem to get to the internet. The other ethernet connect to say an HP laserjet will not be shown on the local network if the Mac Pro is slept or shutdown. So its either one or the other, think of it that way.
So, not possible to have the 2 ethernets for 2 different networks?
(e.g one for the Internet and the other for connecting another computer)
    4) you don't make it clear about the optical eject/retract sticking. If you installed some your self then you should remove the face plate because 99.9% don't fit properly(they don't clear).
I didn't install it myself, it came so. Anyway, I think you're right with the end of your sentence (it doesn't fit properly). However, both trays have different symptoms (one is blocking because of the front door and the other is blocking because of the internal tray), so I'm not sure how to solve that (I could keep the door open for the first one, but what about the 2nd one?).
Please tell me how I can be more clear about this issue.
    5) the USB , try a good power usb hub, the smc reset may help this point of usb failure. The hub will definitely help, I use a very small CYBER POWER and have never a problem. Other vendor hubs yes but not this one.
I guess I've not be clear on that as well?
The power is the working part of that USB port. For example, if I put my external Hard Disk (powered only from USB), the light comes up and the drive spins up, yet the mount process does not happen (the disk isn't read and isn't detected).
So, if the port fails to send data without a hub (i.e directly) how would a hub address the issue?
(and, by the way, I've actually a hub, but things get worse when I use it, even with a single device; e.g my iPhone, if connected to it, disconnects at various time).
    6) you mention running in 10.4.11 that 2008 Mac Pro is unsupported for Tiger.
Really? That's a shame, 10.5 is unusable to me (unbelievable bad changes in the OS). Well, 10.4 works fine there anyway.
You mention 10.5 have you updated to 10.5.8 and all system updaters. The 2008 Mac Pro runs very reliably using 10.6 or higher.
    I've 3 partitions:
    •One with 10.4.11
    •One with 10.5.8
•One with 10.6.x (I do the update more rarely on this one because I usually don't use it)
As I said earlier, 10.4 is almost required for me. Only for watching videos I restart to 10.5 (and make the update there when available). But I can't afford to live with 10.5. 10.6 is even worse.
The fan situation would be a non issue. I just did a clean install of my son's 2006 Mac Pro and while it was running in 10.5.8 the fan noise bothered me but once 10.6+ went in the fan noise was a non issue.
Are you implying that 10.6 made the noise reduce?
You could replace that 2600 with a Nvidia 8800GT, if you can find one but do not buy the one created for the 2006 Mac Pro, it will not work. Also the GT 120 or Radeon 5770 or 5870 will work but unsupported. That means if you ever do a clean install your install disks will not have the drivers for those radeon cards but the OS will install. Then once you update Snow Leopard the drivers will be installed. Snow Leopard 10.6.4 is minimum.
I'd prefer to avoid using 10.6.4, indeed.
    Thank you

  • Optical Drive

My optical drive stopped working. The computer can't find that I have one. I had a Lacie external hard drive connected and started to have problems with backup so I disconnected. I forgot to "eject" it first. Since then my optical drive disappeared. When I stick in a cd/dvd absolutely nothing happens. Any suggestions?

I am having a similar problem (minus the external hard drive). When I insert a disc into the optical drive, absolutely NOTHING happens. The drive does not even swallow my disc. I have to push the inserted disc with another disc so that it springs out of the drive enough for me to pull it out with my fingers (their is no resistance from the computer here).
    I've tried:
    Using various discs
    Restarting my computer
    Waking it up from sleep
    Resetting the SMC
No luck so far. My Hardware Overview is not showing any disc burning device. I've already had the optical drive replaced once (by Apple). I'm hoping it will not come to that again. HELP!
    Thank You
