Computer will not boot after 10.6.8 upgrade

Just did the 10.6.8 upgrade to a computer and not it wont boot. Stuck at the grey start up screen with the apple and the spinning wheel of death. Zapped the PRAM to no avail and reset the SMU and still the same. Any advice?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • White iMac will not boot after 10.6.8 upgrade

I downloaded the 10.6.8 upgrade last night. This morning, the white plastic iMac will not boot.
I have tried evey known keyboard option.
I have tried booting from the snow leopard dvd.
    I have zapped the pram.
    Nothing!
Please, any help would be great.

We bought 2 iMac's 27inch with i7 Quad-core. Did the update a couple of hours ago. My Mac asked to reboot after update, but i didn't accept and worked with iTunes for a while. Then rebooted manually. After reboot it took about 15 minutes to reboot (light-blue screen with nothing on it, not even a mouse). My Wife also did the update of 10.6.8 and rebooted when asked. Her iMac also took 15 minutes to reboot, bus update was unsuccesful! So did update again and then denied reboot and rebooted manually! (Apple-logo and then choose "restart").
When we did that, iMac was very fast and updateproblem was solved! So deny reboot and reboot manually and problems are over. Same deal with 2 brandnew iMac. I'm guessing this is an issue. To much of a coincidence for me!

  • Computer will not boot after changing RAM.

    Hi All,
I have had some BSOD since I upgraded my system earlier in the year. So yesterday I decieded to try and test if the problem was one of the RAM blocks, by only using 1 X 4 MB ram at the time, and then after a BSOD I would change it to another RAM and test again.
Anyway, I started by taking all 4 X 4 MB ram's out, and then only insert 1 in Dimm 4(first found out later that I should have put it in Dimm 1). This worked fine, and computer rebooted, and I used it all yesterday. Then just before I went to bed I got another BSOD, so I powered the computer off, and then this morning before turning on the computer, I replaced the RAM with one of the other 4 MB ram, to continue the testing of my ram blocks.
But now my computer just wont boot anymore! I tried putting all RAM blocks back, putting 2 of them in, 1 at the time, and every combination I can think off, but it just wont start anymore.
When I power on the computer, it does start the fans, and the 2 blue light in the motherboard is on, but nothing comes on the computer screens, and no beeps or anything at all. It just stands there with all the fans running without booting bios.
I tried resetting the CMos, and removing the battery like shown in your guide on here, but it made no difference. I also tried to remove ALL ram blocks, just too see if it then would give me any beeps, but exact same thing happens. So I supect that the reason it does not start  booting, is because it thinks that there is no RAM in the motherboard ???
I really hope someone can help me out here, since I'm close to giving up, and I'm out of ideas. Everything worked fine last night, but after switching the RAM block, it just wont boot anymore no matter what ram I put in it.
    My system is:
    MB: Z68A-GD80 (B3)
    CPU: Intel Core-I7 2600K
    RAM: 2 X 4 MB Corsair Vengence 1600 Mhz & 2 X Kingston Hyper-X Genesis 1600 mhz
    GFX: HD 4870
    Monitors: 2 X Asus vW246H
    Please help! thanks in advance!

This is almost always a recipe for failure and the most likely cause of the BSOD's. Recommend to pick one kit or the other to use, or better yet if 16GB is wanted, purchase a 4X4GB kit.
Check to see if the EPS/ATX 8-pin CPU power connection is secure. The PSU is not specified in your component list. It is possible it has gone bad. Test with only one RAM stick in the primary DIMM slot. I have the most trust in the Corsair brand.
Prior to the test, remove the PSU power cord, remove the battery for awhile, clear CMOS.
    Hi, thanks for your reply.
I have been running with those different ram blocks for a long time, and the 2nd set I actually got after the BSOD's started to test the ram. The BSOD is very likely to be because of a bad Win 7 installation anyway, since I cloned my old HDD to a new SSD, and that is apperantly not a good way to go, so the lets just forget about the BSOD for now - that aint my main problem right now..
I did what you surgested above, eventhough I done it before. I now have just 1 corsair ram in DIMM 1.
Removed powercord, then I cleared the CMOS again by pressing the clear cmos botton at the back with a screwdriver for 10 secs. Then I removed the battery for 10+ secs as well.
Still does not seem to boot into bios. Fans running, and light on MB, so powersupply must be fine as well. Seems unlikely that it should just die overnight anyway.. Powersuppy is a Corsair HX 750.
CPU power conector is fine. I really haven't done anything except switching that RAM block this morning. Last night when I powered the computer down, everything worked fine.
To be sure that its not because my GFX card should have gone bad overnight, I tried with another GFX card, but still nothing comes on the screens when it should be booting up.
If the none of the RAM was working, or it does not detect any ram in the motherboard, shouldn't it atleast be giving some sort of error beeps ?? What is so frustrating is, that I get NO errors or sound or anything.. I just a black screen, and a computer with atleats all fans running..

  • Computer will not boot after bios update

This afternoon I recieved an urgent BIOS update in much the same format as I have received updates from HP for years. It was accompanied with some other non urgent update.
So I gave  the permissions to make the update.
I recieved a notice that the update had been successfully completed and the computer said it was restarting.
The problem is that it never woke up...
After several minutes I manualy restarted the computer.
As the boot began I heard three beeps, and then nothing but a black screen.
I shut down and restarted after several minutes but this time no beeps just black screen.
I figured that somthing must have corrupted the BIOS
I began researching what the three beeps mean.  Appearently three different sets of BOIS were used in this model.  Different BIOS have different beeps.
Well I sure never  thought I would need to write down what BOIS I have...
In my research I have see referances to holding down certain F keys  for different BIOS options as I start the computer
If I hold down an F key when I hit the start button the computer emediately shuts off
How can I get to the BIOS to reset or roll back the update?  What next?

The box is on the way...
In addition the the methods outlined in the article The Hp tech  had me try to start tapping the F 10 key.
    Nothing worked...
Hp is sending me a box to return the computer to a repair facility.
Thank you for your  timely assistance,
    Sparks

  • Mac Mini will not boot after Security Update 2008-007

    Hello,
A G4 Mac Mini machine I was asked to take a look at will not boot after the owner (succesfully) installed Security Update 2008-007 from Software Update. Booting always hangs at the blue screen after the Apple logo, and booting in verbose mode reveals that WindowServer is crashing repeatedly. Permissions and filesystems have been repaired, PRAM reset, etc. Safe boot also exhibits the same problem, but it is possible to boot to single user mode. Hardware checks out fine with diagnostic utilities.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Unfortunately, backups are not available (it's not my machine =).

Hi Arkku , and a warm welcome to the forums!
I'd certainly give Sig's advice a try first.

"OK, restart your computer, hold down Command-s and type in the following:
    /sbin/fsck -fy Enter
    /sbin/mount -uaw Enter
    rm /var/db/.applesetupdone Enter
    # The rm command is the remove command which deletes the file.
    # Robert: I'd rename the file via: mv /var/db/.applesetupdone /var/db/.applesetupdone.old
    reboot Enter
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!

  • HP Pavilion 15-n268sa will not boot after windows update (windows 8.1)

After a series of windows update (windows 8.1) my HP Pavilion 15-n268sa will not boot up, no fan noises, no lights no nothing.
I have tried a "hard reset" a number of times with no success.
When the battery is present the white LED flashes 3 times when the power button is pressed.
    Please please help.

    Hello Cuffy,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you notebook will not boot after a series of Windows updates.
Can you tell me if you are able to access the HP Recovery Manager by repeatedly tapping the F11 key while the notebook turns on? If you can access this, try doing a system restore to before you installed the updates. If not I would suggest you go through this document: Computer Does Not Start and the LEDs Blink or the Computer Beeps.
If it's the Caps Lock light that is blinking this document will tell you exactly what the error is (spoiler: 3 beeps is a memory failure). This could also explain the failed updates. The updates are stored in the RAM before being applied to the operating system.
You can try reseating the RAM, or using only 1 of the RAM cards, as you have 2x4GB cards. If it still doesn't work with 1 card, try the other card to confirm it has failed.
You can replace defective cards via HP Phone Support if covered under warranty or at the HP Part Store if not covered. You can contact HP Technical Support at 1-800-474-6836 in North America. For all other regions click here.
    Hopefully this information helps!

  • My mac book pro does not boot up correctly anymore after doing some updates. I did have my ipod charging to my mac book. I ran the simple updates and never go to the maverick update and now my computer will not boot correctly. Help!

Please help my computer is not repsonding after doing some simple updates. I follow the instructions and which is simply click for the update to take place. I did what I was instructed to do. I did not do the new update for the Mavericks yet. I just did simple updates. The computer shutted down and restarted but would never get pass the grey screen with the spinning wheel and the booting bar that would not go past a certain point befor shutting off again. The computer is practically brand new. I purchased the computer from best by 2012 and the warrenty just ended the past October. I hardly use the computer maybe 4 times since I have had it because I have another main computer that I uses. However, I don't want to do a hard rest becuase I do have the entire adobe suits software that I paid for and don't want to loose. I have an appointment with apple today to see what they say but I hope that my computer that I hardly every use is not defected after doing a updated pushed by Apple. Any thoughts or suggestions???? Thanks in advance Apple Family :-)

Well, I was at Apple for sometime on that day. I got a Genius that did not want to work. She basically jumped to the money to tell me that my hard drive was no good and that I was out of warranty (October 2013). I began to explain to her that I had only used the computer 5 times and that I don't use this computer as my main computer because I also have a Toshiba that is less expensive that I have had for several years and not one issue out of it. The rep told me that I could by a new hard drive for $161.00 and that I would loose all of my software and photos that I have on this computer. However, I told her that it's bazaar that it happens right after my warranty goes out and had I used it more often when in warranty before October then I would have been covered. Keeping in mind that I would still be very disappointed with the product because I would loose all of my information and it would not make sense to me why the hard drive fails on a very gently used computer. So I asked for a manager and it took her some time to get one. In the mean time I watched how the other Geniuses interacted with the other customers and seen that they were very engaging with convo and very help. I guess I just I got another lemon when I got my rep. When the manager finally came. I went from A-Z with the issues and that I felt that something could or should be done because the rep said that she did tests on my machine and it read to her that my hard drive was bad and there was nothing that could be done. I explained that I was not looking forward to paying for services to have my new computer repaired. The manager offered to give me 25% off the cost but I still didn't feel that it was effective. After he left and the rep wrote the notes in the system, I told her that I didn't think that all options had been exhausted and that there was something else that could be done. I told her to erase the machine and see if the updates could be installed and if the system would continue to do the same thing. The rep was hesitant and said that I would loose everything which we already know that we were at conclusion from the beginning. She assured me that I would happen again and that I would need a new hard drive. I just told her to erase the machine and get me another manager because I was just getting tired of her unhelpfulness and negative perspective. The new manager came and was very pleasant and I explained everything once again from A-Z. I informed him that I had the machine erased and that I need his help with options because I don't feel that the rep or the last manager was resourceful or helpful. He apologies for the actions of the reps and proceed to tell me that they will run all the updates in the store and that if it booted correctly that I should continue to use the machine with out adding the adobe software back on just incase that it crashes again and I'm out of money once again. However, if it does happen again and it is a hard drive issues that he would work with me to resolve the issues. As my computer went through the process of rebooting from out of the box stage another rep approached me because he could tell that I was upset and not happy. I told he what had happen and he said I think I can help you a little more. He said that I just want to run further testing on you computer for different components to make sure that everything would work properly and pin point any issues. I was delighted with that option. Anything would help at this time especially someone who is willing to help. The first test that he ran was to for the hard drive and he said that since it failed the test the first time could be because the software update glitch and did update correctly which would make the test faulty and be negative. As I sit with finger crossed the test came back as a pass test that my hard drive was not the issue and that the update was the cause and that I did not have to buy a new hard drive. I was happy that the computer was ok but I lost information. All of the updates were done in the store and everything works fine now. If I was not persistent about my gut feeling then I would had left out thinking that I had to pay for a new hard drive that I really didn't needed. Now I can invest that money in a external hard drive to start backing up my information. Lesson learned by I'm still on the fence about things but I hope all is well. I really went through a lot. No help or no service was not an option that I was taken.  I hope that it helps.
