Computer will not go to sleep automatically

I've found other topics about similar problems, but I haven't found an answer yet.
Both my girlfriend and I have a 15" MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo. They used to have no problem at all going to sleep.
Recently (not 100% sure, but I think it's after I updated them to 10.4.9), they both decided to stop going to sleep automatically when they're inactive.
I've tried changing the Energy Saver settings to different sleep times, but they still won't sleep - not on battery or on power adapter.
They WILL sleep when the lids are closed or explicitly told to sleep, just not when they're inactive.
Anybody found a fix for this? It's really pretty annoying.
Thanks!

I unmounted the AirPort
Disk, and quit the "Airport Disk Agent" from the
Activity Monitor, and both computers started sleeping
on their own.
I'm assuming this is a bug - it seems to me this
shouldn't prevent the computers from sleeping.
Thanks for letting us know about this.

  • Computer will not go to sleep

I just installed Snow Leopard, upgrading from Leopard. Everything seems to be working fine, except that my computer will not go into sleep mode. Please help.

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple's KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
Some have resolved sleep issue by downloading the 10.6.6 Combo update, from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try
    USER TIPS……..
Check in System Preferences > Energy Saver is "Wake for network access" checked? If so, uncheck it.
One user reported, " I couldn't make my macbook pro to go to sleep because I had my wireless headphone receiver still plugged in. I unplugged it and then it went to sleep."
Also, if you have an External Western Digital (WD) hard drive and have installed
WDDMService and WDSmartWareD on your Mac, it may not sleep. Fix is to un-install those....you don't need them to use the drive.
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
One provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
"I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
One user has had success, after trying all these tips, using an App. called PleaseSleep. I've never used it though.

  • My imac will not go to sleep automatically.  I've tried lots of stuff.  What else?

I noticed in the past 1 to 2 weeks that my imac would not go to sleep automatically.  Well, the screen will dim and go black but the hard drives/fans are not cutting off like they used to.  The only change I believe I've made is the introduction of a networked attached storage device connected via a switch box.
I have my energy settings checked to put hard drive to sleep, wake for network access, just like I always have.
I've tried doing an SMC reset.
I've tried disconnecting the network attached storage.
I've tried deleting the "power management" file in the library preferences section.
I've tried creating a "test account" as an admin and duplicating the energy settings.
I've removed programs that were starting at log in, one by one.
None of the above has worked and I'm stuck.
I can manually put the imac to sleep and that works fine.
    Any suggestions?

I've also tried turning the screen saver to the "never" position as I read on another post.  Didn't help.

  • Why wont my screensaver activate, my computer will not go into sleep mode automatically.

I just bought a new iMac i5 processor 21.5 inch and I cannot get the screensaver to engage and the spaces / expose will not work either.  Any ideas what is wrong?

    Try restting the PRAM

  • Computer will not shut off---restarts automatically

For about a year now every time I turn it off it begins to power down like normal, fans stop and all is dark and quiet for about 4 or 5 seconds then it restarts.  The only way to keep it off is to reach around back and turn off the power switch. The power button at the front of the case has no effect once it starts to boot again. This is a home built system on a MSI 8KN Neo4 board and runs well otherwise. I believe my hardware drivers are up to date but I'm not an expert by any means. Is there any BIOS feature that I might try to sort this out.
      Thanks for any ideas.
Tried to pose my dxdiag but the file size was too big.

go to device manager, (right click on my computer and click on "properties", then tab named "hardware", then "device manager"), navigate to "network adapters" and expand it(double click on it). select and double click on each LAN adapter, navigate to tab named "advanced", and turn off WOL:

  • After installing recent java + security update, computer will not sleep

After installing the recent java, daylight savings, and the security update. my computer will not sleep. Does anyone else have this problem? I do have an adaptec usb2 card installed but nothing is plugged into it. Also i don't have any Ipods or external things plugged in. I have had the same setup for the past year with no problems, now it will not sleep. I have also tried repairing the permissions. Please help

When you select Sleep from the Apple Menu nothing happens, is that correct? Try this: Go menu > Home > Library > Preferences. Drag the whole of the Preferences folder to the desktop. Restart your mac, don’t worry if things look different, you have not lost anything. Can the mac sleep now? If yes, then its a damaged or corrupted .plist or preference. If you are using Apple Mail, drag the com.apple.mail.plist back to the new preferences folder created on reboot, you dont really need anything else but keep hold of the old preferences (the one you dragged to your desktop) just in case for a month or two. If everything else is OK you can safely delete it. If it has not cured the problem then remove the new preferences folder created on reboot by taking it to the trash, drag back the preferences folder you moved to the desktop and reboot. Now reinstall a clean OS. See how you go from there

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    -/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--
(username is your name or System Administrators name)
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.

  • Computer will not sleep

I'm really getting agravated. For a long time my system OS 10.6.8 worked perfect. Now, since my grandson had "played" his Minecraft a couple weeks ago, it will not go to sleep or stay asleep. Any suggestions? I guess I need to reload the last time machine back up? Trying to figure out how to do that is mind blowing. Do I insert start up disk and use the DU on it and then pick restore from the icon of my external HD that time machine is on? I'm not too techy as you can tell

  • My Mac Air with Yosemite will not go to sleep

I don't know exactly when this started but I noticed that even after my Mac had been closed all day it was still running.
I followed some support forums and tried to make sure wake on lan etc. was turned off, but even just Apple -> Sleep fails to put the computer into sleep mode.
OSX Yosemite 10.10.1 Mac Air 11 Mid 2013

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved. Note that, as stated in the article, the computer will not sleep if some sharing services are enabled.
    Step 2
    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
    Step 3
    Select
               ▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...
    and uncheck both boxes marked
Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...
    Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals and test. If you use a wired keyboard and/or mouse, use different ones. You must rule out the wired keyboard and mouse as possible causes of the problem.
    Step 5
    Reset the SMC.
    Step 6
Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after restarting out of safe mode, post again.

  • IBook G4 will not go to sleep

    Hello Everyone,
This is a problem I've been having for about a year but now I'm finally trying to fix it. My iBook G4 will not go to sleep. It doesn't matter what method of putting it to sleep I use. Using software to select sleep, or the power button and clicking on sleep don't do anything. Closing the lid just turns off the screen, but then the computer doesn't have power if I open it much later and is still running if I open it quickly.
After trying to put the computer to sleep, it takes several minutes to turn off, so I'm guessing something is screwed up as a result of trying to make it sleep. Additionally, although possibly not related, sometimes if just left on but unused, it will lock up so that it doesn't respond to anything (no keyboard inputs and the screen is dark) but the power is still on (caps lock light will turn on and off).
Here is what I have tried to fix the problem so far:
    Reset PMU
    Reset PRAM/NVRAM
Ran techtool deluxe - says everything is OK
tried without additional memory (which came with the ibook) - didn't help
tried without airport extreme card (which came with the ibook) - didn't help
tried booting in safe mode - didn't help
tried putting it to sleep when logged out - didn't help
i tried to run the diagnostic cd that came with the ibook, but it gave me error messages (both with and without extra memory)
    Invalid memory access at %SRR0:00cadcbc
    %SRR1:00003030
and had a flashing file folder with mac symbol and a "?"
i reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled 10.4.11 (through CD and software update) - didn't help
Does anyone have any thoughts on what else I can try to figure out the problem? The only thing I have thought of is that maybe one of the updates might be the problem, since when I got the ibook it worked wonderfully. (Sadly, when reinstalling I didn't think to check if it would sleep after each update).
Is there a way (other than safe mode) to find out if it is a 3rd party software problem or an OS problem?
Is there any way I can get the mac diagnostic CD to work so maybe that could tell me something?
Should I just stop calling it a laptop and use it as a desktop where sleeping isn't as important?
Thanks for any help you can give!!!

Hey Spherical (cool name but weird),
Now realized that I don't know the CPU speed and size of your iBook but it probably doesn't matter since they're all pretty much the same but then again....
Here's something from that post that I referenced:
    It's official designation is PMU99.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/12inchPowerBookG4/2_Architecture/chapter_3_section4.html
    "Power Control IC
The power manager IC in the 12-inch PowerBook G4 is a Mitsubishi M16C/62F microprocessor, also called the PMU99. It operates with its own RAM and ROM. The functions of the PMU99 include:
*controlling the sleep and power on and off sequences
    *real time clock
*controlling power to the other ICs
    *monitoring the battery charge level
    *controlling battery charging
*supporting the interface to the built-in keyboard ( and also the trackpad )
The PMU99 also provides the hardware interface to the keyboard. Software in the PMU99 IC scans the keyboard, then sends the data to the system in packets like those from the ADB. To the system, the keyboard behaves as if they were ADB devices"
So try detaching the keyboard and trackpad from the logic board. Be careful doing this. Email me for instructions. Be especially careful with the trackpad flex as it's real easy to mess up that socket. While you're doing that inspect the connectors/sockets for any evidence of liquid spills .
