Computer will not shut down, logout or restart

I got my computer about a month ago and I recently re-arranged some of my security settings (password, firewall, timed log out), and downloaded software for an HP Deskjet F4280 (HP Photosmart Studio, HP Device Manager).
Everything works perfectly, except when I go to shut down all the files disappear, the menu bar disappears, and nothing happens until a window pops up telling my finder could not log out.

Your issue is significantly different than the OP's (original poster's), so please start a new topic in the Account and Login forum.
Also, do NOT post your e-mail address in public posts. Spammers can pick it up. I have asked a host to delete it for you, so you shouldn't worry about it this time, but in future, keep it in mind.

    Hi Clinton,
This happens to all the time and this is what I normally do. (Press and hold the pwer button until the computer shuts down) but, this doesn't seem to answer the real issue. Its just like you cut of the power to shut it down.

  • Computer will not shut down.  Claims Finder will not quit.

My system is Mac OS X 10.5.8 The computer will not restart. The error message is that Finder refuses to quit. I have not tried to power off the computer using power button b/c I am concerned that might lead to more problems. Other applications seem to be running slow but the failure to restart is the big problem. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello KathleenB,
Have you tried manually killing the Finder processes by using *Activity Monitor* which you can be located by going to *Applications -> Utilties -> Activity Monitor*. Look for the Finder process and click the *Quit Process* button. Don't worry if Finder processes reappear.
Then go ahead and try restarting your system to see if that helps.

Cannot find any support except for this.
Apple will not support unless you have bought a support package and is now offering to sell you this package.
Makes me ponder the thought that this is all a scamm to get more money out of the customer and this program (virus) was purposely loaded during one of the updates.
Not sure what I bought here but my respect for apple and its products is deteriorating rapidly.

I'm not sure where you got that idea. All Macs come with free phone support for the first 90 days:
    http://www.apple.com/support/complimentary/
Further, you can always make an appointment at the Genius Bar of your nearest Apple Store and take the machine there for free advice and basic diagnostics (though any service may cost money outside the warranty).
Finally, Apple offers a 14-day, no-questions-asked return policy. If your machine isn't working properly right out of the box, take it back and get a different one.

That's a pretty ridiculous thing to say that clearly indicates an utter lack of understanding of how the tech world works. I appreciate that you're upset, but please try to stick to reality here. You won't get much sympathy from anyone saying silly things like this.

  • Mac Pro Will not Shut Down or Reboot

Just received a new Mac Pro 3 ghz yesterday. Whenever I choose shutdown or restart the computer will not shut down. Everything goes away except for the desktop pattern. The mouse can still be moved but it never finishes the shutdown process or restart. I have to hold down the power button on the front of the computer to get it to shut off. Does anyone have any ideas on this one? Thanks in advance!

    Call Apple.
Make sure that you don't have any USB device that didn't come with the system, that you are using the power cord that it came with.
I have yet to run Apple Hardware Test, but you might want to do that now while on hold. I think it uses "D" startup key, or try Option key.
And if you installed any software, or was it like this the very first time? Importing any PPC applications, startup items, tasks, etc., anything other than just prefs and data files?

Change your password at iforgot.apple.com, sign out and sign back in.
    Reboot before you do this.

  • System will not shut down

Reconnecting to the internet via cable, my computer will not shut down without unplugging it. Any suggestions?

Unplugging the power, or unplugging the Ethernet?
Does it work if you give it long enough (10 minutes)? If so, that would seem to indicate that it is timing out trying to shut down some sort of network connection.
Does your cable provider require that you install any extra software to connect, or use the inbuilt Mac PPPoE client?

  • Computer can restart but will not shut down

    Hello All,
I have an iMac 17-inch Late 2006 model which is part of a computer lab which will not shut down completely. When I select shut down from the menu the computer will get to the blue screen and a spinning gear icon will appear. After a little while it will stop moving and just sits there. I have left the computer in this state over night and it does not finish shutting off. Only by holding the power button does it ever finish shutting down. It will however sleep and restart without any problems. The restart takes a little while but it does work. All of the other computers in the lab do not demonstrate this issue.
Things I have done in an attempt to fix this problem:
    1. Reimaged computer from known good computer after zeroing the disk
    2. Repaired disk
    3. Repaired Permissions
    4. Deleted login preferences from all user folders as well as library folder
    5. Reset SMC and PRAM
As I had noted earlier this machine is part of a lab in which none of the other computers which were imaged from the same base image are showing this issue. If you have any ideas at all I would love to hear them.
Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions that you may have.

I was looking in the console logs earlier and they are a real pain to parse but here is a section. I told the computer to shutdown at 13:13 for sake of convenience with locating the associated entries. Sadly comparing the notes in its log against a computer sitting besides it has yielded basically identical notation. I posted what I believe to be the shutdown sequence. If you see something that I have missed let me know.

  • MacBook Pro 2013 will not shut down without restarting.

I got a macbook pro a month ago and it will not shut down without pressing down on the power button. Using the normal Shut down options only restarts the computer. I have done all the disk utility repairs, installed new mountain lion, reset the PRAM several times, and ran software repair from doing the shutdown hold D. I also checked to see if the PRAM is good, and it is Ok in systems utilities. It will also restart when i have not touched the computer for 10 or so minutes and will go to locked user log in.
I really don't know what else to do. If you need more details let me know. Any advice?
    Thanks

    Thanks!
I tried this and discovered something new. I noticed that if the computer is charging while shutdown, the computer will still restart. However, if the computer is charging and you shutdown, then unplug the charger, it will remain off. It will also resume normal shut down and sleep if you shut down while unplugged, now. An idea why it will still restard while plugged in though? If not i very much appreciate your help so far!

  • IMac will not shut down or restart using the apple menu

I have an iMac running 10.7.3 that will not shut down or restart using the apple menu.  The only way to get this machine to shut down is to hold down the on/off button on the back of the computer.  This has been a problem for quite some time and may have started with Lion, but I’m not sure.  Any help is appreciated.

    Hi...
Before you shut down, make sure you "quit" all open applications. Applications are running if you see the small blue reflection under the app's name in your Dock.
If necessary, you can force quit apps... several ways to do this.  One, from your Apple menu > Force Quit or using the Activity Monitor located in /Applications/Utilities.
If it's not a question of open applications, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • IMac will not shut down or restart

Only a "hard" shut down works (holding the main power button for 5 seconds). I don't think that action does my directory any good! This started when my automatic software update launched and had an unsuccessful installation of QuickTime 7.6.2, and Safari 4 public Beta. I removed Safari and used Firefox to get Safari 3.2.x. I was then able to install QT 7.6.2 after several attempts.
But, my machine will not shut down! Any suggestions? Thank you.

    HI Kenny,
    Try resetting the SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
If that doesn't help, try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Your computer’s PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values.
Make sure your important data is backed up just in case.

  • MacBook will not Shut Down or Restart

My MacBook will not shut down or restart from the apple menu, nor from any other dialog box that pops up, after an update, for instance. The only way I can turn it off/restart is by using the power button. I have tried archiving and installing OS X, but I am still having this problem. Does anybody know how to fix this?

    Hi Henry,
    Help here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
Second, make sure you have all your updates. Click the Apple logo in the Menu then click Software Updates.
Reset PRAM by holding option-command-P-R keys down during startup until you hear the chime at least three or four times.
Resetting the PRAM is a standard procedure for the problem you are experiencing.
Also, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. DU is located here:
Applications/Utilities. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, then click Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU and reboot.
If you need further assistance, please post back.

And will not start up in safe mode. I have reset PRAM and SMC. Also restarted with no startup items, no luck. Had the problem of waking from sleep and not shutting down in 10.7, updated to 10.8 hoping for fix, no luck. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Hi, this log has some similarities to my ipod touch which seems to be not sleeping properly due to wireless issues. Can I check - are you using a wifi connection - if so have you tried ethernet?
