Computer will not sleep automatically.

Only sleeps if I close the lid or through the apple menu. Even with all apps closed.

Hello everyone,
Same here.
Had the same problem with 10.5.3 already. At that time, as I had lots of "beta" applications installed, I thought it might come from there. Then I also thought it might be Skype (if this application is on, does the OS consider it as an activity and never sets the computer to sleep? or is it the application itself that keeps the OS from putting the computer to sleep?).
Finally, last week, I completely reinstalled my computer (from scratch with the original 10.5 DVD). Upgraded to 10.5.4 and did all the Software Updates through the corresponding application (not by downloading the upgrades and installing them manually), Used Time Machine to restore my profile and reinstalled manually all the software that "want" to go in /Applications.
Yesterday, I had to download a big file, so I quit all the applications (including Skype), except Firefox (as I was downloading from there).
This morning, although the file was downloaded since long time, my MacBook was at the log-in screen, screen off, but not sleeping (the little frontal led was not oscillating as it is when in sleep mode).
Therefore, I don't think it is Skype after all.
What I haven't tested:
Create another profile and check whether it goes to sleep there. This could tell us if it is a profile related problem or an OS-wide problem...
If anyone has suggestions...
Cheers,
Pete

  • After installing recent java + security update, computer will not sleep

After installing the recent java, daylight savings, and the security update. my computer will not sleep. Does anyone else have this problem? I do have an adaptec usb2 card installed but nothing is plugged into it. Also i don't have any Ipods or external things plugged in. I have had the same setup for the past year with no problems, now it will not sleep. I have also tried repairing the permissions. Please help

When you select Sleep from the Apple Menu nothing happens, is that correct? Try this: Go menu > Home > Library > Preferences. Drag the whole of the Preferences folder to the desktop. Restart your mac, don’t worry if things look different, you have not lost anything. Can the mac sleep now? If yes, then its a damaged or corrupted .plist or preference. If you are using Apple Mail, drag the com.apple.mail.plist back to the new preferences folder created on reboot, you dont really need anything else but keep hold of the old preferences (the one you dragged to your desktop) just in case for a month or two. If everything else is OK you can safely delete it. If it has not cured the problem then remove the new preferences folder created on reboot by taking it to the trash, drag back the preferences folder you moved to the desktop and reboot. Now reinstall a clean OS. See how you go from there

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    -/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--
(username is your name or System Administrators name)
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.4.8 Combo update. Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!
    Cheers!

  • Macbook will not sleep automatically

    Hi
I've recently noticed that my Macbook will not sleep automatically, even when the power management is set to sleep at minimum (1 minute).
It will sleep if I do it via the menu, however if I walk away from the machine with the lid up, it just won't go to sleep.
I've tried switching everything off that could possibly be running in the background, tried from a new user account and also tried a power management and zapped the P Ram.
Up until a few weeks ago it's been running fine, don't know what's happened since, any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you
    Kiran

Thanks, i've pasted below some of the text that was shown in 'Console', the last line was repeated several times so i've only copied it once.
I have no idea what this means, except there is some sort of error, how would you suggest I proceed.

  • Computer does not sleep automatically after upgrading to Windows 8.1?

I have Windows 8.1 and my laptop will not sleep even though its settings are set on a time frame to automatically - used to sleep perfectly fine without any issues before on Windows 8. I'm sure I don't have any applications such as, Windows Media Player
running or etc. that prevents my computer from sleeping because I've tested it with no applications running and does the same thing. The only thing it does is dimming and turns of the display on time. This is frustrating and inconvenient that I always have
to manually sleep through power settings, please help me fix this!
**I've heard this isn't just my problem and many people also experience the same issue after upgrading to Windows 8.1**
    Please see attached photo below:

Thank you for your suggestion, Carey Frisch! I've left homegroup but it doesn't seem to temporary band-aid the issue. I've tried the other solutions there but I'm left to no avail.
"Hopefully Windows 8.2, which is slated to drop in the first half of January 2014, will address this sleeping pandemic, for now we all have to leave with Microsoft’s shenanigans."
I hope Microsoft addresses this issue as I'm not the only user who has this problem and fixes it in a soon coming update! Do something about it Microsoft!
I guess all we can do is play the waiting game and hope Microsoft listens...

  • MacBook will not sleep automatically since Snow Leopard install

Hello. I am having a serious issue with my MacBook since upgrading to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. My MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, 2.4 GHz) will not go to sleep automatically anymore. If I select "Sleep" from the Apple menu it will sleep fine. However, it will not sleep according to my Energy Saver preference pane which says sleep at 1 min each (Display and Computer). Another thing to keep in mind is that my display sleeps perfectly normally. However, the computer itself will not sleep.
Here are the things that I have tried so far:
    - Reinstall 10.6.2 combo updater
    - Remove Energy Saver preferences and entire System Configuration folder
    - Made sure that no hardware or software is interrupting sleep
    - Reset PRAM and SMC
I am running Mac OS X 10.6.2 with ALL updates and firmware installed.
Please help me figure this out as it is a serious issue. Thanks.

Is the sleep issue a new problem, or has it always been this way?
What external USB devices do you have connected? Do you have a USB PCI card installed? Some USB devices can cause the sleep problem. Disconnect all external USB devices & see if the Mac will sleep.

  • MacBook Pro Will Not Sleep Automatically or Pressing Sleep

My Late 2011 13 in. MacBook Pro has been having some issues lately with going into sleep mode. My Mac is setup with a 2nd monitor, a speaker, an external hard drive, and Ethernet  The apps I always have running, which are in the toolbar, are Kaspersky Internet Security (2014 Edition), Memory Diag, Window Tidy, Boom (System Wide EQ), TeamViewer, and LogMeIn Hamachi. As of yesterday, I was able to press the sleep button and it would go to sleep, but it would never automatically, even after resetting the SMC. I did read somewhere that Boom has a bug that prevents Macs from sleeping, but the article was from 2 years ago. I've only had Boom since I think March. Yesterday, I uninstalled Avast! Free Antivirus and replaced it with Kaspersky Internet Security. That's all I remember doing, so I'm not sure if that affected anything. I know that closing the lid will not make it sleep because of the two screens. I open my mac up at around 11 or 12 every day and leave it running until like 11:30 or 12 every night. Last night, I went to put it in sleep mode and I waited a few minutes, and nothing happened. I unplugged some things, ejected a disk from the disk drive, and made sure nothing was open. A few minutes later and still nothing. I then logged off and still nothing. Finally I just shut it down. Also, on a side note, my computer takes about 5 minutes to finish starting up. Most of my friends and family who have Macs say theirs takes about either less than a minute or a minute. So I'm not sure what been going on there, but that has been going on since about December. Also, all my software is up to date. I have no clue what may be causing it, but my Hard Drive is fine, accept for the occasional Spotlight-caused invalid memory block count.

Start by removing "Kaspersky," which is worse than useless and should be removed even if it's not causing the problem.
Remove "Kaspersky Security" by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. The product includes a Safari extension that may not be removed by the uninstaller.
Back up all data before making any changes.

  • Computer will not sleep (EVER)

"When I close the lid the power light on the lid release goes bright but never cycles.
Also, my MBP will not "wake-up" from said state:
When I open the lid the light goes out, but computer does not respond. Closing the lid renews the light, but again, it does not cycle, nor wake up when opened again... The volume keys do however make noise when pressed.
Pressing "Sleep" in the apple menu is fruitless. It does, however, kill F12 to widgets, as well as the other special function commands F9,10,11 and such. It also prevents Apple-Tabbing (simply tabs), and swithcing tabs in FireFox by clicking them. Yet Tab+Up,Down,Left,Right works as should... But these symptoms are probably a result of a failed to-sleep routine."
This is really becoming a pain, and could use some help!
I am running the following system:
    OSX 10.4.9
    2.16 GHZ Intel C2D
    2Gb 667 DDR2 SDRAM

    Launch Terminal
Enter pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    It will return
    hibernate mode x
    Where x =
    # 0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.
    # 1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
    # 3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
    # 5 - This is the same as mode 1, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory (in System Preferences -> Security).
    # 7 - This is the same as mode 3, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory.
    What is it returning ?
To set another mode use the command
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode x
If your machine was previously set to mode 3 (or 7) and you’ve reverted to the old style sleep mode, you’ve got one more step to take: recover the drive space used up by the copy of your system’s RAM, which was created the last time you slept the machine prior to making the switch. In Terminal, enter these two commands, pressing Return after each and providing your password when asked:
    cd /var/vm
    sudo rm sleepimage
I suspect the issue is related to the sleep mode set and the space left on your hard drive.

  • Computer will not sleep

I'm really getting agravated. For a long time my system OS 10.6.8 worked perfect. Now, since my grandson had "played" his Minecraft a couple weeks ago, it will not go to sleep or stay asleep. Any suggestions? I guess I need to reload the last time machine back up? Trying to figure out how to do that is mind blowing. Do I insert start up disk and use the DU on it and then pick restore from the icon of my external HD that time machine is on? I'm not too techy as you can tell

  • Mac Pro Snow Leopard Display will Sleep but Computer will not Sleep

    Equipment:
    Mac Pro Tower
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    30" Cinema Display
The computer has not been able to fully go to sleep since I bought it. (A refurb, but not from Apple's refurb store.)
As the title says, the display goes to sleep but the computer is still on. (Whether I select Sleep from the Apple menu, or with a keystroke.)
"Wake for network access" is not checked in the System Prefs.
I've disconected everything (inc. the monitor) from the back of the computer and the computer still won't go to sleep.
Reset PRAM and the "System Controller (the move where you power down, unplug the computer, press/hold the powder button for 5 seconds, plug in computer and start up).
I installed the PleaseSleep and the DeepSleep apps, but still no-sleep.
From Console, for the Sleep command:
    11/6/12 4:51:32 PM
    configd[15]
Sleep: Success - AC - Software Sleep
    com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.powermanagement.sleep
    com.apple.message.signature: Success
    com.apple.message.value: 1
    com.apple.message.result: Success
    com.apple.message.uuid: A3270153-6D75-4639-8125-3B105B537BCB
Then from when I touched the keyboard to "wake":
    11/6/12 4:51:32 PM
    configd[15]
    Wake: Success - AC
    com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.powermanagement.wake
    com.apple.message.signature: Success
    com.apple.message.uuid: A3270153-6D75-4639-8125-3B105B537BCB
    com.apple.message.result: Success

"I was not able to use the system disks 'cos the image on the screen appears completly distorted and i am not able to navigate the menus."
Never ran across that type of problem on Apple's message boards.
"I have temporarily fixed that using a ten days trial version of SwitchRes X. Everything works fine now but the Display preferences panel from MacOs, wich stays "in coma"."
In that case, are you now able to boot off your install DVD? If so, run the +"repair disk"+ option, when done boot back to desktop & run repair permissions.
"So i guess it's not a hardware problem, but a Snow Leopard Problem."

    Hello, Lance.
Have you checked your System Preferences... > Energy Saver settings?
Specifically, are any of these items checked:
     • "Wake for Ethernet network access"
     • "Startup automatically after a power failure"
     • and these System Preferences... > Energy Saver > Schedule sub-menu settings:
         • "Start up or wake"
         • checkbox with "Restart" in Sleep/Restart/Shut Down choices bar

  • Imac will not sleep automatically

I read and tried all the fixes listed regarding sleep. I can make the iMac sleep manually BUT even that is odd as it takes more than one attempt for it to take hold as it starts to sleep and wakes itself up. This can be either 1 or 4 tries depending on what I am not sure. I reset SMC I tried USB devises I think it may be software running in the background but not sure. The same configuration/applications slept fine on 10.4.11 PPC G4 systems. Other than this no other system issues.

Known culprits for insomnia include: some scanner software (that control buttons on the scanner because it has to be polled continually), screen saver being invoked earlier than sleep, mail being checked frequently (if your sleep is set to 15 minutes and you check mail every 5...), Parallels Desktop (obviously only on Intel computers and I don't know if this has been fixed yet), anti virus software that scans frequently. You may be on the right track with suspecting a process.
Often this can be diagnosed by creating a new account, shutting down, and logging directly into the new account. Which reminds me. When trying to track down insomnia, it is better to shut down rather than restart. It is a power manager thing. I learned this one the hard way.

  • Will not sleep after OS 10.9.4 update

Mac Pro 2013 will not sleep, either manually or through Energy Saver. It sleeps for about 2 seconds, then back on. It worked fine before the update!

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved. Note that, as stated in the article, the computer will not sleep if Internet Sharing is enabled.
    Step 2
    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
    Step 3
    Select
               ▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...
    and uncheck both boxes marked
Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...
    Step 4
    Reset the SMC.
    Step 5
Disconnect all wired peripherals and test. If you use a wired keyboard and/or mouse, use different ones. You must rule out the wired keyboard and mouse as possible causes of the problem.
    Step 6
Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data andreinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after restarting out of safe mode, post again.
