Computer wiped out hard drive, did I loose everything?

I am hopeing that there is some way to recover from this.

Once you can get iTunes installed again and working, just login with the AppleID you used to purchase things before, and you should be able to re-download all you previously purchased content from your purchase history.

And you have my sympathy - I've been through the nightmare of reinstalling Windows and dealing with the nearly endless list of updates/reboots (why don't they offer something like Apple's Combo-updaters? Since they seem to have a dozen security updates every week, there should be a better way to start from scratch with Windows).

  • Migrating Information in Target Disk Mode Wiped out hard drive

I just helped a friend install Leopard on her new MacBook (it came with a drop in disk of Leopard). After the install, I started her previous 3-year old MacBook in target disk mode to migrate over old system settings. During the migration, the new MacBook froze up and forced me to do a hard restart. After restarting the computer, it would no longer recognize the old MacBook that was still in Target Disk Mode.
After awhile I finally decided to pull the hard drive out of the old MacBook and hook it up to my WiebeTech DriveDock. I now get a disk insertion error telling me that the drive is not readable. I have tried DriveGenius, but I cannot rebuild or repair the drive because it doesn't even pop up.
Has anyone heard of the migration assistance wiping out the drive you were attempting to migrate from? And also, does anyone know of a way to fix this?

She backed up with Retrospect a couple weeks ago, so not much would be lost if I wasn't able to resurrect this drive. The feeling of accomplishment from tackling this problem is the only truly important thing that would be lost.

  • HT1349 I had to get a new computer as my hard drive went and lost everything. How do I get my itunes library back?

I had to get a needed to get a new computer as my hard drive died. How do I geatr my ituens library of songs back?

The easy way is from the backup you make of your computer so in case something happens you don't lose anything.
You can download some media files purchased from Apple:
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match Availability by Country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).  Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Select the store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.
This will not reconstruct your library as it was.  It just puts the media back.  You will have to do playlists, ratings, etc.  If you have music from another source you will have to get it from there again.

  • Re-installing FCP & Wiping Out Hard Drive, Worried about Losing Project

Ok so computer needs a factory re-install, need to clean it out and re-install FCP and everything. I have projects I've been working on in Final Cut Pro and I'm worried even though I save all the raw footage, rendered files, and project files on external hard drive, that when I go to put it back on my computer it's going to get all screwed up and mixed up, is there any easy way to do this? Or should I just finish my projects first and then re-install everything on my computer?

If you do decide to re-install and have never used Media Manager. Here is an excellent video on how the use Media Manager from PixelCrop/MacBreak:

  • Wiping out hard drive on older MACS

I'm dumping my Classic, Performa, iMac, and G4. How do I erase the hard drives?
    Thanks

Boot from an alternate source of software. Run the appropriate Disk Utility. One pass of erase with Zero all data option and you are done for all but Nuclear secrets.
Beige Macs with diskette drive can boot from Disk Tools diskette, contains Drive Setup.
Early iMac and most G4 can boot from OS 9 System/Install CD, which contains Drive Setup in the Utilities folder.
Late G4 would need to boot from the Mac OS X Installer CD, but do not install. Choose Disk Utility off the Menu and select your Hard Drive and erase with Zero all data option.
I highly recommend installing an Operating System on each Mac after erasing. This will show that it is still alive, and may save it from the landfill.

  • When I downloaded Mavericks, my computer wiped my hard drive?

So I updated my MacBook Pro to OS X Mavericks and it took all night. The next morning when I opened my computer it said something like 10 minutes left of download so I waited. When it was done it started asking me all the questions it asks when you first get the computer like where do you live and what's your iTunes username and password. Once I finished answering the questions, I looked at my computer and everything was different and all my documents were gone and all of my history had been erased.

You should never install new software without a backup.

  • My pc recently caught a virus, which has wiped my hard drive. I had itunes on it and would like to know if my music is stored on my computer or on the net? So if i download itunes onto another computer will i be able to get it or not?

My PC recently got a virus and wiped the hard drive. I used itunes for my ipod. I would like to know if the music i had on itunes is stored on my computer or on the net? So in other words can i still access my itunes from a different computer?

Your purchased music is availble for download again at no cost.  If you have iTunes match service, you can download your matched music.

  • Do I need to deauthorize a computer if I have wiped the hard drive clean before I sell it?

I am going to sell my computer. I forgot to deauthorize it in itunes. I have already wiped my hard drive clean. Do I need to still deauthorize this computer and how can it be done?

Once the drive has been wiped, the only way to deauthorize is to Deauthorize All from any computer with iTunes installed.
If the intent was to deauthorize the comptuer, that needed to be done prior to wiping the computer.

  • HT4527 How can I relocate my music so it lives outside my computer in a hard drive? I'm running out of hard drive space.

How can I relocate my music so it lives outside my computer in a hard drive? I'm running out of hard drive space.

The referenced article does not address the issue of just moving the music files outside my iMac, then still use my iMac and iTunes to manipulate those files without them adding bulk memory space to my iMac.  Would like to have the link or alias, or path fully described so that I may keep adding more music.  Plus one more thing, I would like to be guided as to how to back all of this music onto my capsule via time machine.

What exactly does this mean? Your iMac doesn't authorize anything. Are you getting an error message or what message are you getting with regard to authorizing? The iPad is not authorized? What?
    No do not restore yet.

  • How to restore music on computer after new hard drive installed?

had new hard drive installed and am not able to retrieve/find music that was backed up on my computer before new hard drive was installed.  Only music that was in the "cloud" was able to be retrieved. Any idea where it could be?
    Thanks!

Did you reinstalled iTunes ? It looks like you had a newer version of iTunes with the corresponding database, and now your iTunes seem to be an older version. If you are a little patient, you might easily fix this with iTunes 10.5 which should come out very very soon since iOS 5 has been annonced for tomorrow.

  • My eMac won't update to 10.5.8 from 10.3.5 after I wiped the hard drive clean

I was wiping the hard drive of my eMac that at the time HAD a good running copy of OS X 10.5.8 on it. Now obviously I did not want to reinstall from a back up because I'm donating the eMac to a non-profit and wanted no data from me, the previous owner, on it..
I do have the original discs, but they only install OS X 10.3.5 on the eMac. When I tried to update the OS to 10.5.8, where I had it running before wiping, I got a message that the "Bill of materials was not included for this package" (or something to that effect), so the eMac would not allow me to update the OS with the newly downloaded software.
    Now what?

Thank you both so very much! I have found my Leopard DVD and am installing it as I write this on a different computer. The missing link, no doubt. I presume that after I install the 10.5 Leopard, I can then add the update that sits on my desktop now?
    Again, thank you so much.
