Computer (with K9N2) often hangs at MB loading screen at bootup

Hi,
I have just assembled a computer.  It seems to work well on the first try.  However, whenever it's reboot / shutdown&bootup, it often hangs at the motherboard loading screen, which displays:
Press tab to switch to post or del to run BIOS setup
Whether I press tab or del, it will load up some hardware data / counting and then hangs there.
I have tried to pull out the memory and reinstall it.  Also did the same to the video card.  It still hangs often (probably 30% chance of working)
I have suspected that it is about Voltage for memory but since i'm not quite sure I didn't do much.
I have also updated the BIOS.
What else will you suggest me to do?
Thank you for your help in advance.
Here are the specs of my system:
MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum
AMD Phenom X4 9500 4M 95W
OCZ High Performance DDR2 Memory Dual Channel (4GB)
XFX GeForce 9400 GT 1GB
AOpen F90GS Monitor
Hitachi Deskstar 1TB Sata drive
LG GH22NS50 Black SATA DVD-Writer
ULTRA XBlaster ATX Mid-Tower Case
ULTRA 500 Watt ATX Power Supply
Windows XP Professional SP2
Thank you!
Ray

The problem existed before I did the BIOS update through live update though.
Well no then it wouldn't be the problem now.
Yea it could be the ps but tend to be awful quick to condemn em around here and on other boards I visit I notice. With the PCI-e video card removed the power supply should work fine, 500w should be plenty and your video card doesn't appear to use external power anyway, gets it all from the PCI slot.
Does your power supply have a 8pin CPU connector or a 4pin connector connected to the JPW3 CPU header? You do have that power cable connected right? If a 4 pin, is it connected at the right side of the 8 pin header?  Even if only a 4pin it should still run, I ran mine on one for several days until I was able to pick up a new PS with the 8pin connector.
You stated you put it together, it ran right at first, common then to start adding to one once up and running. Think back, is there anything you can think of you did just before the problem started? Installed a piece of hardware? a program? Updated drivers? all or one of the above?
Was the computer built with all new parts? If not whats used, where did the power supply come from, was it new? used? you took it from another computer you had/have or second hand from someone else? Same with all the other parts its built with, all known good? Or the person couldn't remember, wasn't sure?
Sure take a minute and test that PS in another computer, or if you can try another PS in this computer. If you don't have another computer or PS how about a buddy, test it in his or put his PS in your computer and see if it helps. I'd hate to see you spend money on another one just to continue to have the same problem. Having more then one computer is handy, when in doubt swap a part or two a minute. I know not everyone has that option.

    i accidently downloaded something that made my webcam flash on spuradically even once i deleted it. when i restarted my computer it got stuck at the white loading screen with the grey apple and wont go past there..what is wrong? will applecare cover this?  my computer also slowed down drastically before it stopped working..thanks! HELP PLEASE!

    Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
    There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
    Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
    Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
    If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
    If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
    Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
    Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
    This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
    Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 7
    Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 8
    This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 9
    If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. If you can't get to an Apple Store, go to another authorized service provider.

    Unable to use free version regardless of browser on any machine. I login with adobe id but then the loading screen just hangs. can't get any further - Tried all suggestions like clearing browser caches but no change.
    Got a couple of projects i wanted to try this on and if the software works I will probably take a subscription but considering this isn't working at all will look elsewhere.
    Also - adobe live chat support is useless.

    Hi,
    please share the Adobe ID that you are using with DL-AdobeStory-support<at>adobe<dot>com and we will investigate the issue.

  • Problem with internet after getting stuck at loading screen

    i'm having a LOT of trouble with my computer.
    earlier today, after installing avast antivirus, my macbook completely freaked out, the internet wouldn't work so i restarted. my computer was stuck at the loading screen so i spent 40 minutes on the phone with apple support, and eventually after getting it to work in safe mode, we restarted and it loaded. this was after doing a "repair disk permissions" from the utility disk.
    however, now my internet is having TONS of problems. firefox & chrome won't work. in safari, only facebook and my email will load. i have restarted my router but nothing will work. i'm scared to restart my laptop in case i run into problems again and get stuck on the loading screen. thankfully apple is one of the websites that will work...
    advice? i'm completely computer illiterate and have no idea what information you need to help. i just know that, as a law student, i really need internet access but none of the websites i need will load. help.
    also, as a note - i don't have access to internet other than my own right now & i don't have access to any other computer right now... just this one.

    Uninstall that software.  If it has an uninstaller, use it.  If not, you will have to do so manually by checking the Preferences folder for all the straggler files.  There are no viruses for osx according to Apple - http://www.apple.com/why-mac/faq/#viruses
    After doing the above, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • Black Screen with Subsequents Kernel Panics at Gray Loading Screen

    I remember seeing a few threads about the Mac Pro and the legacy 8800gt. Most of the problems seemed to pop around 10.5.7. However, I just recently ran into a problem running 10.5.6. And I'm almost certain it's the graphics card, since it can't get out of the gray Apple OS loading screening before it panics.
    Once I dig out the stock graphics card from the closet. I can at least verify that system still works. Please feel free to comment if you have any insight.
    System: 2006 Mac Pro: 2.66ghz dual core, 4gb ram, Nvidia 8800gt 512mb
    Situation: This morning in Stormwind while at bank. I was running full screen mode at the time. Firefox was on in the background.
    Problem: Screen went black but monitor said signal was still being sent. I waited 30 seconds to see if it corrected it self and tried to window mode as well. Upon hard shut-down and restart, the kernel panic appears during the gray apple screen with the wheel loading. All subsequent kernel panics followed this behavior.
    What I tried:
    I first tried resetting the PRAM. Received kernel panic.
    Tried booting in safe mode. Received kernel panic.
    Tried loading from install disk. Kernel panic.
    After backing up in Target Disk Mode, I retrieved 1 log from Mac Pro. See below for contents.

  • System boot occasionally hangs at module loading

    Since I installed Arch, about 43% of the time that I have attempted to boot my computer the boot process hangs at module loading. I assumed that the problem may have been that I was autoloading my modules. I tried turning autoloading off and manually loading them instead but that did not help. Then (as a shot in the dark) I tried having autoloading on, with my modules still defined in rc.conf, but that only made things worse (understandably, I did not think that this would help, but I figured that it couldn't hurt to try).

    I have the same problem on my thinkpad T500 after I upgrade the wireless card (intel wifi link 5300).
    For a long time I didn't understand the why of this behavior, but some weeks ago I realise that the problem can solve it hard-locking the wireless card and unlocking after the step: "loading modules".
    For more information this is the complete thread on thinkpad forum that I wrote when I try to solve this issue: http://lnv.lithium.com/t5/T400-T500-and … 870#M26238
    I apologize if you do not understand what I mean, the problem is that I have some difficulties to express myself in English

  • Hanging on Loading Screen

    We are using Presenter v7.07 and have a quiz embedded. When we export to presenter, the file 'hangs' on the loading screen.
    When we changed the 'viewer.xml' file to an older version of the file it works fine - although obviously we cannot use the older version of the file as it has been updated since then.
    We have also changed this file from a PPTX to a PPT file and this also never resolved the issue
    Your input on this would be appreciated

    Hi
    We went through your presentation and found that there is some issue with quiz.
    When a quiz slide is inserted and deleted or when a navigate to slide is set and that slide is deleted we get ino this problem.
    Each slide in Powerpoint has a unique ID. Presenter remembers this and then assigns the go to slide navigation
    When you delete that particular slide Presenter for some reason does not update it.
    In order to workaround your problem you can do the following
    1. Go to Quiz >> Manage
    2. Select your Quiz and click in edit.
    3. Click on the Pass or fail options tab
    4. Click Ok on all dialogs and publish.
    Hope this solves your problems
    Thanks

  • SCORM compliant SWF file stills hangs on loading screen

    I am using Captivate 5.0  v 5.0.2.630 . I have checked for the latest patches and updates and my software is up to date including the patch that was supposed to correct the problem I am having.
    I have a SCORM-compliant course and the SWF file hangs at the loading screen. This usually only happens after the user has launched and exited the course without completing it. But is has happened once with an initial launch of the course. The problem seems to be more prevalent if the user’s browser is Mozilla but it has also happened in IE
    The LMS I am using supports both AICC and SCORM compliant content.
    I have also changed the scorm_support.js file from var g_nAPI = 0 to var g_nAPI = 1  which was suggested in a March 21 blog post.
    Any suggestions would be very gratefully appreciated.

    I am having a similar issue. I took the update earlier this week and it seemed to be working until a user fails the quiz and exits the course. When they return to the course it sticks on the grey loading screen - infinitely.
    Any suggestions would be most helpful!
    We are using IE7
    Captivate 5
    Geo LMS

    Sometime's it would load into the OS but once I start doing anything on it like using firefox, msn etc it will just hang, freeze then it will crash and I get the beach ball thing spinning forever.
    I took it to the apple store in UK, Westfield.
    The guy turnt it on and it loaded, and he said there as nothing wrong with it, I told him there was but he insisted there wasnt anything wrong with it. Iv'e took it back home and now it crashes everytime it loads into the OS.
    I ran hardware test and it came back with 0 errors I am now running an extended test just to double check.
    Any ideas what could be causing the mac to behave like this? it just happened out of the blue 1 morning im very confused.
    Cheers.

    Sure looks like it but since you've had your iMac for less than a year it might be covered by the one year limited warranty. Do you have AppleCare?
    I can see why you would be confused since the information you got at that repair provider was iffy.

  • Really need help with a loading screen

    Ok, here's my problem, I'm making a puzzle game and I can't seem to make my loading screen work with my main menu. The loading screen is represented by an image filling up with colour where the colouring takes place by means of a thread (and there's a string as well that paints the %) . Now the loading screen is supposed to appear after i click the start button from the main menu and after completely filling up (or when the tread dies) the game panel is suppposed to be show on screen. Between the loading I initialize all the components for the game. Now, when I press the start button, the whole screen freezes (for the duration of the loading thread) after which the game screen appears. What puzzles me more is that if i don't add the game screen the loading screen works like a charm.
    Here's some of the code:
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){
    if(e.getActionCommand().compareTo("Start")==0){
    //initializing the panel for the loading
    ds=new Load();
    //initializing the thread that makes the panel rainbow dream
    anm=new Ompy();
    x.remove(pent); //pent is the jpanel containing the main menu with the customised buttons, and x is the reference to the current JFrame's content pane
    x.add(ds);
    pack();
    /* MediaTracker tracker=new MediaTracker(this);
    tracker.addImage(ds.pic.im,2); //i tried using a media tracker to wait for the image of the loading jpanel
    tracker.addImage(ds.fill.im,2);
    try{tracker.waitForID(2);}
    catch(InterruptedException ie){} */
    anm.start(); //i start the thread
    //without the folowing code the loading screen works perfectly
    some code
    Winx gs=new Winx(); //the panel containing the game interface
    some code
    while(anm.isAlive()){}
    x.remove(ds); // i remove the loading screen
    x.add(gs); //i add the game screen
    anm=null;
    ds=null;
    setVisible(true);
    gigaslave.requestFocusInWindow();
    pack();
    //here ends the code that shadows my loading screen :((
    else {System.exit(0);}}
    }I appreciate your help.

    Thanks for all your help ...this is what i have so far and am working with:
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    public class TVRemote{
         int volume = 5;
         int channel = 5;
         public void channelUp(){
              if(channel < 25){
                   channel++;
         public void channelDown(){
              if(channel > 1){
                   channel--;
         public void volumeUp(){
              if(volume < 10){
                   volume++;
         public void volumeDown(){
              if(volume > 1){
                   volume--;
    public class VCRemote extends TVRemote{
         String tape = null;
         String mode = "Stop";
         public void insertTape(String t){
              tape = t;
         public void ejectTape(){
              tape = null;
         public void setMode(String m){
              mode = m;
         public String getMode(){
              return mode;
    public String getMode(){
              if(tape == null){
                   System.out.println("There is no tape");
              return mode;
    I know it does have to be set as 2 files....I still need to put in a rewind and fast forward option would that be done the same way that public void insetTape is done? also I was wondering how i will interface it with the user? Cause the only output i see is a display message that there isn't any tape in the vcr.
    Thankgs again for everyones help.

  • Kernel panic, restored hard drive, stuck on loading screen....

    yesterday i had a kenel panic occur when i booted up my Macbook Pro, i tried to boot to an SMC, tried to boot to a PRAM, finally booted to the install disk.  Went to disk utility, erased the hard drive and restored it to a Time Machine Back up done 2 days ago.  Turned on the computer, now it's stuck on the loading screen, but no kernel panic message.....booted again to the install disk, verified and repaired HD, and got the message the HD seems to be okay.  WEnt to reboot and stuck again on loading screen.  Help me get to my computer......please!!!
    Let me know if you need further information, would love any help i can get.....thank you!!

    a brody, thanks so much for the advice.  quick question on the particulars: this is what i am assuming you mean to do:
    1. go back to disk utility from the install disk and wipe the hard drive again.
    2. run the install disk again and just try to install the base operating system from that disk
    3. see if there are any problems from that point
    4. diagnose problems
    is this correct, or should i be installing the base operating system from another point (i.e. my external hard drive time machine back up, somewhere else in the Disk Utility options, etc.)
    Thanks again for the help.

  • Firefox v28 will not launch yahoo and yahoo email often hangs. the problems started with v28, does not even load the homepage in the addr bar on startup.

    i set yahoo mail as a homepage.
    start firefox v28 and the screen goes blank, nothing shows in the addr bar and it just sits with
    the spinning green icon. no problems until i moved to v28. i often have issues with flash player
    hanging and created a dos bat file to kill it but that is not what seems to be happening with yahoo. pretty much everything else works. FF freezes but killing the plug in releases it. the newer versions
    of FF seem more flakey than the older ones. thanks for your help

    How do you kill the Flash player plugin using a BAT file -- are you killing an Adobe Flash exe or Firefox's plugin-container.exe?
    You can start up Firefox to a blank page using the Run box on the Start menu, with this:
    firefox.exe "about:blank"
    Hopefully that will at least get you in. Then, for Yahoo mail, make sure to access your mailbox through the Yahoo home page (or AT&T Yahoo home page, etc., as the case may be). And:
    When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
    Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
    Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
    orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
    On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
    If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    In the dialog that opens you can remove your Yahoo cookies individually.
    Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
    To rule out extensions as a possible culprit, could you try the site in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions, some advanced features, and some custom settings. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
    You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
    * Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    Note: Flash and other plugins still run
    After Firefox closes, a small dialog should appear: click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
    Any difference?
