Computer won't accept my administrator name and password

Whenever I attempt to update software or do anything that requires me to put in an administrators name and password it says "you must type an administrators name and password to make changes to software update" as if it can't read the words I had just typed. I've tried changing the passwords numerous times under system preferences and reseting the password using the start up disk. Nothing has worked...HELP PLEASE!! (bout to throw this computer, literally, I have no patience currently) Thank you

Your Keychain login password must be the same as your admin password ... are they?
Changing your keychain password
You can change the password for your keychain at any time. However, *if you want your default keychain to be unlocked automatically when you log in, make sure your keychain password is the same as your Mac OS X login password for your account.*
If your Mac OS X login password is not the same as your default keychain password, you’ll be asked for the password whenever an application needs access to your keychain and your keychain is locked.
To change your keychain password:
Open Keychain Access, located in the Utilites folder in the Applications folder.
Open Keychain Access
Choose Edit > “Change Password for Keychain ( keychain name).”
If the keychain is locked, type the password to unlock it and click OK.
Type the current password for this keychain.
Type a new password, and then type it again to verify.
For help choosing a secure password, click the key button to the right of the Password field.
Click OK.

Time Capsule won't accept my user name and password for access - Help!

Hi all,
My Time Capsule seemed to stop working one day and I had to do a hard reset with the little button at the back. After that it worked and I restored my wireless network settings but now I can't access the Time Capsules hard drive with Time Machine.
When I try to choose it as my Backup Disk in the Time Machine preferences it says "Enter your user name and password so Time Machine can access the file server "Our Time Capsule" (the name of my time capsule). However, every time I try to enter my password I get "Sorry, you entered an invalid username or password".
I've already tried several resets of the Time Capsule and I've also tried logging on my computer as the Root user and changing my administrator account password back and forth but no go.

Consider the following:
*_Time Capsule Keeps Asking Me For a Password_*
It will be important to know what is going on, or what you are doing when it asks for the password. Is it asking for a password only when Time Machine attempts a backup? Consider this:
It is NOT your username and password it wants when you try accessing the Time Capsule. (I know... it SAYS "username and password") But it means the Time Capsule's Name and Password.
You will find that by launching Airport Utility.
Select the TC on the left.
Click "Manual Setup".
Click the "Time Capsule" Tab.
You will see "Time Capsule Name:" and "Time Capsule Password".
Make sure “Remember password in keychain" is checked.
That is the information you need to enter when it asks for "username & password."
*I Don’t Remember What My Time Capsule Password Is*
You can see what your current TC password is by going into Keychain.
Open your Keychain and select "login" from the Keychains pane in the top left. Highlight "Passwords" in the Category pane from the lower left.
Sort all the items by Kind. Note everything labeled "Airport...". How many do you have listed? There should only be one "Airport base station password" for each base station that you have active. Also, there should only be one "Airport network password" for each network you have created. If there are more than these, then delete all but the ones with the most recent Modification date.
To see what passwords are being stored, double-click your Time Capsules' entry. A new window will appear.
Put a check beside "Show Password". You may be asked for your own Admin password so enter that.
Now the Password field will display the password you entered into Airport Utility for your Time Capsule
*It Still Won’t Accept the TC Name and Password*
Launch Airport Utility --> Manual Setup.
Select "Disks" in the tool bar above.
Click the "File Sharing" tab.
Is "File Sharing" checked? It should be.
What is selected beside "Secure Shared Disks"? If it says "With Accounts" or "With a Disk Password" then the system will ask you for a password every time it mounts the TC hard disk. If you switch it to "With Time Capsule Password" then use the password you designated earlier in the “Time Capsule" tab. It should only ask you once and then never again - because you had checked "Remember password in keychain".
If you have made any changes then click "Update".

Here's my problem. As you know, to do certain things you need to enter your admin name and password. Problem is, the system isn't accepting them. I've gone through the process of changing the administrator's password twice, and it still isn't working. Any ideas?

If that's the case, try reinstalling the OS. Do post back!

Administrator name and password

I can't download any new software or make any changes on my computer because that requires an administrator name and password. Somehow, I am only a standard user on my computer and I am the only account on the computer (besides system administrator (root). I've used my install disc multiple times to change my password, but that doesn't work when I enter my user name and the new password when the computer asks for an administrator name and password. It just says password is invalid and administrator name and password is required. any warranty and technical support has expired and I'm at a loss at what to do. I really need to download new software and need to somehow recover the original administrator name and password and change my standard user account to an administrator account. I'd appreciate any help or advice!

Thanks to all who responded. You are all absolutely correct. However, this Ipad was a gift to my wife who was dying of cancer in the hospital and wanted some entertainment. So I started it out with her Apple ID. After she passed away I moved from Sacramento to Austin and eventually proceeded to get the Apple ID changed from my wife's to mine. Meanwhile when she was in the hospital I opened an Itunes account in my name to buy movies for her. That was the first mistake.
Then during the move to Austin I lost track of the IPAD and later found it and tried to use support but could not remember the proper ID. Later the folks at the Apple store helped me create a new and novel Apple ID that was unfortunately unlike any other.
The botom line is that I am stuck with three Apple IDs and three passwords. I am told by Apple there is nothing they can do about this as IDs cannot be changed or destroyed. I can quit using them or start a new account but when I try to do that the system keeps remembering too many things from the past and resists.
Even if I sold this Ipad and bought a new one, the system memory is still there.
I think the real problem is that destop and laptop computers are totally owned by an individual and that individual can control logins and passwords to his liking. IPADs and similar Apple products are different in that the corporation has built in their own intrusion detection schemes because of the relation to Itunes.
One thing I thought about is to open a new Itunes account pretendding to be a new customer with my regular Apple ID. Perhaps I could do the same with Apple Support.

I'm trying to download an app that is not from the app store and it needs my administrations name and password

I need help, I want to download the app called 'popcorn time' from online. I know it has no side effects because my friend has used this app for a number of years on her mac computer. I found it on the internet and have nearly downloaded it but my security system won't let me I followed the instructions to get the security system to make an exception for this app but at the end of the instructions it has a log-in pop up that says "OS X is trying to allow an item to always run. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this." I don't know what it means by an administrators name and password I typed my apple ID but this didn't work. I checked if i had the right password and i did and i have tried it multiple times but it still doesn't work this is very frustrating and I need to fix it

New administrator name and password without Start Up Drive

I recently seperated from my partner but got to keep the family MacBook Air
However, my partner set up the orginal administrator name and password and won't provide the details. He also won't supply the Start Up Drive which apparently I could use to do this if I had it.
I am not very techy - is there a relatively easy way that I can set up a new administrtor name and passowrd without loosing the information I have on the computer?

Need help with administrator name and password

I was messing around on my macbook awhile ago and tried to change around my adminstrator name and now whenever I try to update I can't because the administrator name is wrong. I've tried setting it to different things but it never works. How do I re-set my administrator name and password so i can update?!

Follow the instructions in this FAQ to regain administrator access to the computer. If there is an Open Firmware password set on the machine, the method documented will not work and you won't be able to resolve this issue on your own; in this case, take it to a retail Apple Store or other AASP.

May I strongly urge you to get a set of installer CDs. They will come in handy as you need them for much more than just installing the OS. From time to time, e.g. you may need to boot from the installer disk to Repair Disk (you can Repair Disk Permissions from Disk Utility on the HDD, but to Repair Disk, you must boot from a different volume). And if you had installer CDs changing the password and creating a new Admin Account would be a breeze.
You can get universal installer disks at applerescue. Another option in your situation is to do a complete re-install. That will not only enable you to create your own admin account, but it will automatically change the computer short name. However, for that you need installer disks.

Changing administrator name and password

I need to make several changes to my computer. However, I don't know/remember the administrator name and password to my computer and I am the administrator! It's been a long time since I set up my laptop (I bought it and set it up on 12/31/07). It's a black MacBook, OS 10.5 aka Leopard.
What do I do?
I ask that you be as specific as possible when suggesting a solution.

I don't think you want to change the administrator name. It's also impossible to forget it. It's the name in Finder right under Places, assuming you are the administrator.
What you want to do is reset the admin password which you can to by using the Leopard DVD that came with your computer.
Boot into the DVD and hold down the "C" key with DVD inserted. After language screen, menu top left under Utilities you will find the proper item. Just follow the instructions.

When the computer was first set up you created an account and assigned a password to it. That first account is your admin account.

Your username is the foldername you will find under your /Users/accountname/ folder. This is the one with the house icon on it. To change your password see:
