Computer won't boot after windows 7 install.... :( [Solved]

I have 2 hard drives. The first drive is my main arch linux install. The second drive I use to install various operating systems. My school was selling windows7 for $30...I couldn't resist the cheap price...now I'm paying for it ><
I unplugged the hard drive with my arch linux install from my computer. (sda) Then installed windows 7 on the second hard drive. I reattached the first hard drive to my computer. (this was so i could avoid having to re-install grub)
My computer would not boot. I decided to install linux mint -- something I was going to do anyway -- that way I could boot into arch linux and fix things. Mint installed fine. But my computer STILL won't boot. I get grub error 22. What's up with that? Is this something to do with windows7?
Hard Drives:
/dev/sda1 ext2 /boot 100 MB
/dev/sda2 extended
/dev/sda5 ext3 arch / 130 GB
/dev/sda3 ext3 arch /home 166 GB
/dev/sda4 swap 1.72 GB
/dev/sdb1 ntfs windows7 65 GB
/dev/sdb4 ext3 mint / 19GB
/dev/sdb2 swap 1GB
/dev/sdb3 ext3 media 900 GB
Should I install grub to the MBR?
I checked to make sure that nothing in my arch linux install was erased using the arch install cd... I really need to get this fixed before classes on monday so any help would be appreciated.

I was going to say, even at $30 you still managed to get the full windows experience at first boot!
Meskarune wrote:PS. I heard that windows will override the MBR when it updates... so consequently it is bad to install grub to the MBR in a dual boot system. Will I have to be reinstalling grub all the time?
God i hope not.  just stay away from windows if that happens
just thinking about tihs is giving me headaches.

  • Z580 won't boot after Windows 7 Install

    Hi,
After a clean install of windows 7 on the hard drive, Lenovo Z580 wont boot up but when hard drive it put into my old Acer laptop, boots fine.
Initially had to remove the hard drive from the Lenovo and put into another laptop to install windows 7 as lenovo wouldnt boot from usb or CD. And then after install tried putting hard drive back into Lenovo and just doesn't boot at all. Just goes to boot manager sceen and then blank in a continous loop.
    Please help!
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the forum!
"remove the hard drive from the Lenovo and put into another laptop to install windows "
You stated the exact reason for your problem.  You can't install Windows 7 on one laptop and expect it run on another by swapping the hard drive.  It doesn't work.  During the installation Windows inventories the installed hardware and configures itself accordingly.  Since they are two different machines, Windows won't boot.  You are going to have to resolve the USB or Optical drive boot problem on the Lenovo laptop you wish to install Windows on.
During bootup have you tried using the Boot Menu to boot the machine specifically from the optical drive?

  • MacBook Pro won't boot after trying to install 10.7.3 update. Start up stalls at Apple logo and spinning gear.

MacBook Pro won't boot after trying to install 10.7.3 update. Start up stalls at Apple logo and spinning gear. Computer won't even start in safe mode.

My daughter's MacBook Pro was doing exactly the same thing.  I don't know if it had anything to do with the latest update.  She called me about a week ago saying that her MacBook began running slower by the day .  She then called me Friday and told me that it wouldn't get past the gray screen and the gear just kept on spinning.  I did everything I could over the phone including Safe mode which it wouldn't go into and thought maybe it was the hard drive.  She took it to the Apple store.  Originally, they also thought it was the hard drive.  It ended up being a corrupted operating system (Lion).  Apple genius simply re-installed Lion and she's back up and running.  Good thing she backed up right before it crapped out.  She'll be restoring everything tonight.  Don't know if re-installing Lion will help your situation, but it did the trick for my daughter.

  • Computer won't boot after installing MFP M127FW

My computer won't boot to my hard drive after installing my new MFP M127FW printer unless I first unplug the USB cable from the printer and then turn on the computer.  My BIOS is set to boot from my hard drive, not from a USB drive, so what did the installation of the MFP M127FW drivers and software do to my computer?  I assume this has something to do with the Smart Install feature.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi @frcraig ,
I see that you are experiencing issues with the computer booting up when the printer is connected by the USB cable.
I would like to help you out with this issue today.
Most likely it is the Smart Install on the printer causing this. The printer looks like a disk drive.
On the printer, touch Setup, Service, Smart Install and turn it off.
If you are still having issues, in the system BIOS, disable the Boot from USB device option and the USB Legacy Support option. Doing this will allow the PC to complete the boot process to the internal hard drive and allow you to enter Windows. If this does not work for any reason, you should boot your PC before connecting the USB drive. Once the computer is fully booted into Windows, connect the USB drive and wait for the operating system to detect the drive.
Important: Do not disable the USB Legacy Support if you are using a USB Keyboard. Doing so will prevent you from being able to use the keyboard during the booting sequence.
What kind of computer do you have?
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a great day!

  • Windows 7 Won't Boot After Nvidia Driver Installed, MSI Gaming N770

Hi I just bought the MSI Gaming N770 2gb and after installing the nvidia drivers, Windows 7 will not boot after my motherboard POSTs.
I bought this to replace an AMD card.  I uninstalled all the AMD drivers before putting in the MSI card.  I've also run the Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode and everything.
After a few hours of research, I finally came across a thread about flashing a vbios, and something about these cards not working with motherboards with UEFI bios.
    I'm using a P8Z77-I Deluxe mini-itx board, with a Rosewill 630W psu.
I have both 6+2 PCI pins plugged into the two 8pin power ports on the GPU.
Is this an issue that can be fixed with turning off secure boot? or by flashing a vbios onto the card? Or is the card a dud? Or do I have to re-install Windows.
If the vbios is required, are there instructions on how to flash it? I have no idea how to flash a BIOS.  Thank you!!

Had to update BIOS. All fixed!!!!

  • Computer OS wont startup after windows 10 install

Hello im having problem booting my system after installing windows 10 . I made the installation and it worked fine from upgrading from 8.1. But then I wanted to format the drive and at the format menu it got stuck at 2 % and then I restarted the computer. Now it will hang at hp logo and go back to the same logo again. Do I have to replace my hard drive?

From what I understand, if you completed the Windows 10 install and all went to completion, then you are supposed to be able to do a clean install with the Windows 10 DVD or USB download.  With a working computer, GO TO THIS PAGE and scroll down to the "Download Tool button"  Pick the 64 Bit version.  Once clicked it will ask if you want a DVD or USB for the iso.Once it is done and you have either the DVD or the USB version, see if you can then install Windows 10.  If that fails, you might need to replace the hard drive.

  • 128GB SSD won't boot after Windows Update

Hi. I performed a Windows Update on my PC a few days ago. All seemed to go well, but when I turned on my PC the next morning, it would not boot. I got an error telling me that the devide was inaccessible. I've tried using Windows Startup Repair, Chkdsk, TestDisk, nothing seems to work on the drive. Apparently the second NTFS boot sector is unwriteable?? This seems to be the root of the problem. Is there any way to fix this, preferably without reformatting?
I've reinstalled Windows on my old HDD partition and can actually still access the data on the SSD. I just can't boot up Windows from the SSD.
If the only solution is to reformat the SSD, how would I know that the drive itself is not defective? Was this problem caused by the Windows Update or do I have a bad drive? After I re-tune my Windows settings and reinstall my programs, I'm planning on cloning it to the SSD, but I don't want to go through all the trouble if the SSD is just going to fail on me again.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
    (I'm running Windows 7 Professional x64.)

attach the ssd to a working computer and run a bench program on it to see if it working properly.  If the read/writes are close to what is advertised, it is working.
Also, I'd suggest doing a full wipe of the drive before attempting to use it as your primary drive.

  • IMac won't boot from Windows USB install stick

I have a iMac 7.1, the first gen Intel iMac, now running Moutain Lion 10.8.2. I installed Windows 7 via bootcamp two years ago via a flash disk, and the installation was smooth and easy. Now I want to try some Windows 8. I used the Windows USB install tool to clone the install disk into a flash drive and tested the flash drive on a windows computer first. It was working properly. But my iMac just couldn't boot from the flash disk when I pressed the option button during start-up. There's no icon for the flash disk. Then I clone the old Windows 7 install ISO into the flash disk, it wouldn't show in the boot options either! Why? Is it because of some firmware update? Why the same Windows 7 install image I used two years a ago can't boot now for the same iMac? Please help. Thanks!
    Jeff

I believe mende1's response is slightly incorrect. On older Mac computers that came with an internal DVD drive the only way to install Windows on those Mac's is from that internal DVD drive. Even if you connect an external DVD drive OS X and or the Mac computer Firmware will not allow the Win install DVD to boot from that external DVD drive. It must be done from the internal DVD drive. So if yours has failed then you would need to have it replaced before you can install Windows on your Mac.
I know this from personally trying to install Windows from an external DVD drive even when there is an internal DVD still in the system. My late 2011 MBP would not load the Win install from the external DVD drive but would from the internal DVD drive.

  • Mac Pro won't boot after Windows session

My system was running fine before installing Leopard and then using Bootcamp to log into Windows. Now no matter what I've tried I cannot get it to boot back into OS X. I just get the white screen with the Apple logo and progress indicator. I can still boot into Windows fine.
What can I try to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

Maybe we can kill two birds with one stone. I search other posts and the search didn't return any other posts about this that I was able to see....
I am having the opposite problem. I can boot into OSX fine and use Windows via Fusion but when I try to boot directly into Windows using Boot Camp, it starts booting then stops and redirects into Leopard. This has happened repeatedly and I'm not sure what caused this because I was able to directly boot to Windows a few days ago.
    Thanks.

  • Jaguar won't boot after iPod updater install

    Greetings,
My Jaguar (10.2.8) will not boot after I installed (via Software Updater) the iPod Updater 2005-11-17 on my iMac.
I've run Repair Permissions and Repair Disk using Disk Utilities (from both a Jaguar and Panther install CD) and zapped PRAM (3x). No problems show up on Repair Disk. I get the start up chime and a gray screen with the gray Apple logo, but no spinning circle. That's as far as it goes. I cannot boot to Safe or Single-user mode (not sure what I can run except fsck -y).
I can, however, boot to OS 9.1.x on the hard disk; I'm hoping to copy/recover files over the newtwork.
Any ideas (short of erase/partitioning drive and reinstall OS)?
(Don't know if this has anything to do with my post- iPod Update 2005-11-17 problems, but. . . My original iMac drive was 4Gb. I Carbon Copy Cloned the whole disk to a formatted 30Gb hard drive mounted in an external USB drive enclosure, removed the larger drive from the enclosure and installed it in the iMac. Worked like a charm. I've used it this way for almost a year, enduring several application updates, e.g. security updates, QuickTime, iTunes, even one iPod updater. I have noticed, however, that I cannot reinstall Jaguar or install Panther to this HD because the system is not in the first 8Gb of the hard drive. Apparently, I need to create a partition on this 30Gb drive that is < 8Gb in size before I can proceed with the install/reinstall. I thought this limitation was corrected with Panther, but not so?)
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Figured it out.
I couldn't boot to OS X because, it seems, the iPod updated caused Jaguar to behave in it's predictable pattern of not booting properly from a partition > 8Gb in size on this iMac (a 233Mh model that Apple says is affected in this way, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106235). In my case, I had Carbon Copy Cloned my 10.2.8 to a 18Gb drive. No problems occurred with running it. However, this was the first set of updaters I've installed on that OS since that cloning operation. And it simply wouldn't boot.
I booted to OS 9, copied files to a laptop over the network, pulled out the Jaguar install disks and repartitioned the drive to include one partition <8Gb in size, installed the OS there. All's fine now, just have to hassle with moving all those files back and testing.
I could have used a repartitioner (FWB Partitioner Tool for OS 9, <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://www.publishingperfection.com/fwb-software/fwb201/, other dynamic partitioners are available for OS X) to make the < 8Gb partition within my OS 9 boot and avoid deleting everything on the drive in the process. But I didn't figure this out until I'd already backed everything up. Plus, I didn't want to pay the extra bucks and wait for shipping. So I used Disk Utility on my Jaguar install disk to create my < 8Gb partition for Jaguar. Now I have a fresh install. But I'd rather not have had to spend the time figuring all this out!!

  • Server 8 Won't Boot After Hyper-V Install

I recently downloaded the Windows Server 8 beta, I wanted to play with Hyper-V.  I setup a second partition on my i7 at home and loaded it up.  The installation was clean without any issues.  After starting up the server (in both full GUI
and a reload in Core) I am unable to get Hyper-V to work.  I will complete the full Hyper-V role installation and the system will reboot, and then hang.  I have tried this from full GUI and from a Core installation.  I have verified that my
i7 has EPT (SLAT) and I have all the virtualization enabled in the BIOS.  I have tried to do a bit of recovery on my install but I never am able to get very far.  I have wiped the drive, and reloaded a total of 3 times and had the exact same outcome
every time; lock up on reboot after installation.  I thought maybe it just needed some extra time to sort out the added role and just let it go overnight.  In the morning it was still locked up on the reboot.  To be more specific, it is at the
point where I have the fish on the screen and the dots going around in a circle (until it freezes).
I want to add that I have also tried a 'pure' beta without updates and also tried updating before hand.  Same results.  I have done a bit of research on this issue and I am confident my machine meets the minimum requirements.  i7-950 with
    12GB of RAM.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

If you have the Z68MA-D2H-B3 board, go here and get the UEFI update.
    http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3975#bios
UEFI is the BIOS replacement. Once that is done you can use USB 3.0 with Win8 and Hyper-V. Oh, and the computer boots about twice as fast. At least that was my experience.  There is a list of Gigabyte utilities that need to be removed first, so read
    the instructions well.
"(Note) Some GIGABYTE utilities are not supported under UEFI BIOS architecture. Please remove Smart6, Dynamic Energy Saver, Smart TPM, and Touch BIOS utilities before updating the BIOS."
I used a FreeDOS bootable USB to apply the update, since you can't do it from inside Windows or through the BIOS updater.
    http://rufus.akeo.ie/
You may need a clean re-install Win8 afterwards. I did it out of habit, so I don't know if it will pick up the changes and work without it. Back your stuff up first just in case you do.

  • Win 7 won't boot after successful (?) install

    Hi Group,
Tried searching the forums for this problem and found similar postings but I think my problem is different...
I've successfuly installed Win 7 Ultimate x86 in that I get to the point of entering product key, etc. but when it does the final reboot I just get a blank screen with a blinking cursor. Tried some of the workarounds like clearing the pram/smc, deleting the ati driver .sys file (which doesn't seem to exist actually) and also using the driver autounattend from the usb drive. I'm running the latest version of boot camp.
Not sure what to try next. I've been successful installing this version of windows in VMWare and on a fujitsu-siemens laptop without any issues. I've also been successful at installing Xp via bootcamp. Really at a loss as to what to try next. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Jeff

the final part of the Win 7 install and Mr Blue screen due to the Nividia driver supplied on Win 7 DVD kills iMac GT7300
    1. Install... and Blue screen!
2.Re-boot but from the Win 7 install disk – seems to work if you hold alt on boot up and select the disk to boot from!
3.When you get into the Windows installer, click past the language selection. Then click "Repair your computer".
4.Windows will scan for installations and prompt you with a list. Select your "C" drive and click Next.
5.You should be presented with a windows titled *System Recovery Options*.
At the bottom of this list you should see +Command Prompt+.
    Select the command prompt.
6.When the console opens, you can delete the offending driver using the following command:
    DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\NVLDDMKM.SYS
7.Close the command prompt window and click the Restart button.
This time, boot from your hard disk.
You will complete the install with no Blue screen.
Having done this go to the Nivida web site and download the GT 7 series drivers for Windows 7.
    Install, re-boot and ...
+*... install Bootcamp drivers and right off your back to Blue Screen...*+
Repeat 1-7 and install newly downloaded drivers and off you go

  • Ultra 5 won't boot after Solaris 8 install

Hello. After installing Solaris 8 on an ultra 5, the system won't reboot. After trying many permutations of the install, including a bare minimum and the whole shebang, it became clear that the system always hung at the same spot in the boot process (from a boot -v), immediately following the line:
cpu0: SUNW, UltraSPARC IIi (upaid 0 impl 0x12 ver 0x13 clock 270 MHz)
Has anyone seen this problem before? We reset the boot PROM with set-defaults from the ok prompt and that made no difference. This machine ran fine under Solaris 7, so I don't think it's a hardware failure. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I can't tell from your post if you're using a screen/keyboard or a serial console? Have you removed the keyboard and attached a serial terminal to serial port A? Several types of hardware failure will output errors there even if the failure occurs before the framebuffer is initialized (memory errors are common).

  • Computer won't boot up, Windows 10.

Yesterday I was using my computer as a monitor for a friend to play a PS3 on. I have the Acer Aspire 5600U All-in-one PC so it has the HMDI ports for need. When he left, i just switched the screen back to the PC only to find an error code, I didn't catch what error it was but my computer was frozen, i let it sit there for maybe 45 minutes stuck on 100% so I force turned it off, when I tried turning it back on, it just turns on the power, & everything works, the hard drive the fans the external devices connected but the screen just turns back off after maybe 10 seconds, I don't have a mouse cursor or anything, just black screen turns on, then turns off, but power remains on & that's it. I have disconnected all the external devices to see if anything was bugging it but nothing worked. I've let the computer sit like that overnight thinking maybe it was just booting itself into a repar, nothing. I don't get a logo i don't get anything, just powers on, then screen turns off. If i power on the PS3 the screen turns on & works, & i have full functionallity of the buttons on the side, but the second i switch to PC it say's "PC No Signal?". No idea what to do.

    ComputerGuy,
A dirty shut down is holding the power button down while it is booting up into Windows. Not seeing the display means you will need to time it a bit.
We have a 5600U here, so I went and hooked up a desktop to it via HDMI with the 5600U powered off. The 5600U will power on when it receives a signal from the desktop, but the 5600U is not actually powered on itself. Once the desktop is shut off it display a message that says HDMI no signal and then PC no signal. We pressed the power button on the 5600U and turned it on, repeated the process, and when the external desktop was powered off it changed over to the 5600U itself.
I think that you might be having a hardware problem, possibly the hard drive itself. Like I said, you can try the steps I listed and see if you can get that repair going, otherwise you might want to think about swapping in a different hard drive and loading it to see if that is the problem.
