Computer won't go to sleep manually.
When i try to put my mac to sleep from apple menu, it turns my monitor off, but fans and hard drive to not hibernate. When i try to awake, it does not. I have to then hold the power button down to turn off and restart. I have a belkin powered usb hub connected with printer, keyboard, camera, and iphone attached. Only other think on back of board is my isight camera wire. Any help on this?

Have you tested without the USB Hub & such connected?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it is some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro x64 and my computer won't shutdown and sleep. When i try to shutdown pc, everything shutsdown (hdd etc.) but only fans and led's stay on. I have to press power button to shut it down. Even i try to sleep the pc everything shutsdown

Computer won't wake from sleep; shuts-down unexpectedly
I've got older PB (2004). This just started happening. The computer will not wake from sleep, either when I close the screen or manually put it to sleep. I have reset the PRAM and PMU, but no change. Further, it now shuts itself down unexpectedly. Sometimes a hear the fan going hard before it shuts down, other times it just shuts down. It won't turn back on unless I reset the PMU. I think the battery and the cable are fine. I don't have anything plugged into the computer when it does this (other than power cable). Any suggestions?

This is just to let you know that I have had the same thing happen to me this week and that I plan to closely follow your thread so that hopefully I may benefit from your responses. I, too, am using an older Powerbook (15", 1.33 MHz) and OS 10.3.9.
My problem began several days ago when I set up my first wireless router. Once it was up and running I set out to re-locate the router to the farthest point in my house. While traveling back and forth between the router and my laptop, I suddenly found that my laptop was totally blank and unresponsive (although the power light was on). I could not make it shut off, or start up. Using a second computer I turned to this support site, and by the end of the day I had learned enough to remove the battery over night while the reserve unit charged. The next morning I was able to reset the PMU and as a result I found that I could use the computer. ( I also decided to order a new battery, which is on its way as I write. I realize that it may or may not help). At present I am able to start the laptop by resetting the PMU, and while it is on everything seems fine. However, if I close the case, or put it into sleep mode, it dies immediately. (I am able to use the PMU to restart.)
If you determine what caused your laptop to malfunction I hope that you will post it here for my education...and I will do the same. Thank you. Gferg -
Computer won't power on - sleeping?
My s3320f desktop is about 6 years old and I'm having a problem now where the computer won't power on. The amber light on the PSU comes on steady but nothing else happens. I had put the computer to sleep using the start button and it powered down normal (there is no light on the power button - should it be amber?). Any suggestions on how to get this computer to power on? I've tried a new power cord, holding the power button for 30 seconds w/o being plugged in, and a new CMOS battery. In the past, I sometimes get a flashing amber power button and have to cut power to get it to stop - does that indicate anything?

I have read your post on how your computer is not able to power on, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! To begin, I will need to ask you a few questions:
Is this an on-going, or recent issue?
Have you added any new software or hardware recently to your desktop?
Is your computer plugged directly into a wall outlet?
In the meantime, I recommend following this document on Computer Does Not Start (Windows Vista). This should help enable your computer to startup once again.

I installed Firefox 29 on my Mac and now the computer won't go to sleep.
I have a desktop Mac 10.6.8 with OS X. I recently did a software update with Firefox 29.0 and now my computer will not go to sleep. Do I need to revert back to an earlier version of Firefox?

I have a Power Mac G4 running 10.4.11. All of a sudden, the system stopped going to sleep when set to do so in Energy Saver. The Screen Saver comes on according to its setting, and the display goes to sleep according to its setting in Energy Saver, but the system does not go to sleep. The system can be put to sleep with no problem using the Apple Menu.
I followed the tips in the Apple Support on sleep such as removing USB & Firewire devices one by one. I have no Bluetooth devices. I did a Safe Boot as suggested without resolving anything. I scanned my system for spyware and viruses without resolving the problem. Any suggestions?Here's Apple doc.#106214 to guide you thru the Disk Repair.

Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.

Computer won't go to sleep (again)
About 2 weeks ago everything as fine; I was able to put my computer with no problem. A few weeks before that I put in a new PRAM battery and new Memory Modules. But coming back on my vacation this past Wednesday I find out I can't put my computer to sleep again!!! I'm at the point of frustration where it is annoying that I have to keep shutting down my computer If I'm not going to use for a 2 hours or more.
Now I've been backing up like crazy on my external HD. Sometimes I wonder if it has something to do with my computer since I noticed it takes awhile before I see the icon. I don't know. Right at this point I can not afford another computer and I want to be able to figure something out.
I even looked up former posts that someone has this same issue. I even tried this:

Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
Check the printer queue!"

My computer won't go into sleep mode
I have my energy settings mode to have my monitor go off after 15 minutes, and my harddrive after 20. Yet after I installed Leopard, my monitor stays on, and I can hear my harddrive spin in the middle of the night.
What's going on? It was working under Tiger.This is for a Mac that won't sleep.

Computer won't go into sleep mode
I have had my MacBook since August and have had sleep problems with it off and on for months...
- Whether I choose "sleep" from the Apple menu, close the lid, hit commandoptioneject, or just allow the computer to sleep naturally based on my settings (after 30 minutes of inactivity when plugged in or after 5 w/ battery) - the screen goes black for about 5 seconds, and then it makes the sound of the screen coming back on and just wakes back up.
- The computer used to sleep properly most of the time but would have sporadic problems. Now (for the past 4 days, consantly) it keeps running the screen saver until my settings tell it to sleep, at which point it goes black, wakes up immediately, and cycles through the screen saver again... It wakes up every 30 minutes even if I leave it alone for hours.
- I have fully updated software and firmware. I have tried resetting the PMU, changing screen saver/energy saver settings, turning off Airport (though I doubted that was the problem), exiting out of all applications before sleep, and repairing disk permissions in the disk utility. Any other suggestions???
Please help! I don't want to have to Shut Down every time I leave my computer....I think Apple was having some issues with their site for a while ....anyway, have you tried booting into Safe Mode to see if things still occur...

I'd also suggest disabling the screen saver to see if that makes a difference as well. Failing all this, Apple would prob. recommend you do a fresh system install - and if things didn't clear up then, it would prob. be considered a hardware issue and have to be sent in for repair/replacement.

Computer won't wake from sleep
For some reason when I leave my computer alone for more than about 15 mins and the display goes to sleep, I cannot wake it back up. I have to hold down the power button to force a restart. I would prefer not to do this as I lose everything that I was working on. I just did a clean (format and reinstall) install of Snow Leopard last week and downloaded all the updates as per Software Update.

Computer won't lock after sleep/screensaver
I had my computer, a almost brand new macbook, set to require a password after the screensaver opened or the computer went to sleep. I'm not sure if the recent system update is to blame, but now, even though i still have the computer set to require a password (i already tried changing this back and forth a few times) the computer doesn't lock unless i physically shut it to put it to sleep. ideas?
I had the same problem. I'm not sure what caused it. It could've been one of the latest updates or the resetting of my PRAM (I was having trouble with my Powerbook sound). Here's what I did:
I unchecked the option in the security preference pane.
Then I closed System Preferences.
I opened Sys Prefs again and ticked it.
Then quit and it worked fine again.

Computer Won't Go To Sleep When Closed
When I close my computer, it doesn't go to sleep, the light just stays on. This started last night -- my computer was open and I thought it was plugged in, but it wasn't so the power ran out. When I plugged it in, I had to wait a few minutes while the computer got a bit of charge (even plugged in) in order to turn on the computer. But since then, when I close it, it doesn't go to sleep. If I hit the power button and put the computer to sleep, it will stay sleeping when I close the computer. Any thoughts?

The best bet is, to check the error logs: open Console (Applications > Utilities) and paste here the last lines ... I am sure, there must be a daemon trying in vain to connect to the internet ...

i've been having random issues with waking my mac pro os x 10.6.8 from sleep mode via apple bluetooth mouse and keyboard. this issue only happens occasionally (1-2 times per month) with no real pattern that is evident. the only way to wake the computer during this type of event is to turn it off and restart. any thoughts?

Computer won't wake from sleep, even on reboot
I bought a refurbished mac three weeks ago. For the first week, it seemed fine, but now I have a sleep problem. When I close the lid, it goes to sleep, but doesn't wake up. Opening the lid occasionally gets it to wake up, but more usually nothing works - touching keys, clicking the trackpad, brief touch on the power button, and even holding the power button and rebooting it. I've switched hibernate mode to 0 and reset the SMC muliple times. Completely useless. Anyone have any clues? Based on the behavior of the indicator light, it's going to sleep, and when I reboot, it's going back to sleep without ever bringing up the display. The indicator light starts the slow fade again within 3 seconds and the screen only shows a brief flash of light before going completely dark again.
Seems as if you've tried everything that any of us would recommend - since you've a one-year warranty, take advantage of it. Take your machine to your nearert Apple store or an AASP and have them diagnose the problem and repair the machine.

My macbook won't go to sleep unless I use the Apple icon on the task bar
I have a late 2008 macbook unibody (old i know, but its still kickin)
The computer won't go into sleep mode with the lid closed or if I hit the power button. i have to manually do it with the apple icon in the top of the screen.
The ambient light that blinks while in sleep doesn't light up when I do this either. Its been like this ever since Lion, Mountain Lion and now Mavericks.
I've done a clean install of Maverick on a brand new HDD. No change.
*I have modified the computer since I've owned it.
Upgraded from the OEM 2GB of memory to 4GB which is the max for my model.
It didn't come with the illuminated keyboard so I bought the backlit one and installed.
I also had to swap the motherboard to do this since my original did not have the backlight connector.
**Note the old motherboard also had the same problem with the computer not going into sleep. So I don't believe its a hardware issue.
(yes I plugged everything in and seated everything in a appropriate manner, I build custom PC's for friends all the time so I kind of know what to do and what not to do).
I have checked my sharing preferences and they're all unchecked as this is a fresh install of mavericks.
Everything else is all set to system defaults.
Any suggestions/insight?Check System Preferences > Energy Saver
Select: Put hard disks to sleep when possible
Then click: Restore Defaults
