Computer won't let me install anything anymore

Ever since I repaired disk permissions this afternoon Mac won't let me install anything.
What happens is I clicked "save to disk" to install something, I look at my desktop and either a .exe file pops or the actual file pops up but when I click on it it simply vanishes into thin air.
I was trying to downgrade Quicktime 7 earlier today and that is when I first noticed. I thought it was a quicktime problem. I was wrong.

What operating system are you using? (If you're not sure, click the Apple icon at the left of the menu bar and choose 'About this Mac'.) The current version of iTunes requires 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). If you have anything earlier you may be able to get a higher version of iTunes (what version do you have now) but not the current one.
If you do have Snow Leopard or higher then evidently something is wrong; do you get an error message and if so, what?

Have been using itunes for a few years now, was getting the latest update, and my computer wouldn't let it download. Is it my computer or the update?

My computer won't let me install the PalmOne Software

I have a strange problem. My computer decided on February 18 to no longer let me sync with my phone. I have been to Palm's Website and run through the trouble shooter, but nothing works. When I plug in my Treo 755p, the computer recognizes the hardware, but when I push the Sync button, I get two sounds from my computer--the "ta-DA" then the "DA-ta" sounds. I run Windows XP. Also, PalmDesktopWin62 has downloaded, but then won't fully install onto my computer. The Palm CD won't run either. Can someone please help me?

This is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package

Thomas' answer is the preferred technique. Sometimes, these pop-ups will block you from quitting Safari. In that case, press option+command+esc, select Safari, and Force Quit. Then, use the shift key with Safari when relaunching it, per Thomas' suggestion.

I am experiencing the same thing on log out, not all the time but too often. I can get going again by shutting down with the power button, waiting 10 sec. then pressing the power button to boot up again. I have run Disk Utilities, Techtool Deluxe and Disk Warrior which all indicate everything is OK. So I am hoping someone will be able to help us with this issue.

Insert your original install disc and start up while holding the C key. Choose your language and at the next screen instead of starting the installer go to the menu bar on top and click the Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. See if you can repair your hard drive. Also while you're in DU look towards the bottom of the window and check the SMART status of your hard drive, it needs to say verified.

I used to be in control of whether or not Firefox would load for any particular session on my computer. Now, probably after some update I got in the recent past, Firefox has a mind of its own. It opens every time I turn on my computer. There are times I don't want to use any browser, including Firefox. For example, sometimes I just want to look at my mail. Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, when you are going to turn off or restart your Mac, you will see a box called "Reopen windows when logging back in" in the shutdown or restart window. Untick this box and see if the App Store opens automatically in the next startup.
If it starts, open System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items, and see if the App Store shows up. If so, remove it from this list

It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, I simply get stuck during the installation type process. I put in my password, it does accept it, but it does not go any further.
I tried to reset the password, put no password, repair the permissions, the disk but nothing will do. I nearly got stuck with the log in screen but finally succeeded in disabling it.
So I thought I might try to create a new account but I cannot click the lock to make changes. It simply refuses to react.
I am now thinking about using the migration assistant to save all my settings, data and so fourth, but again I get stuck when I have to type in my password. It accepts it but nothing happens...
I guess it has something to do with the authorization process, but can't find anything on the internet about it... Can you help me out?
I am running Lion 10.7.3.

You probably won't like this suggestion, but I suggest you reinstall Lion.
First, backup your system. Next, reboot your system, press/hold the COMMAND-R keys to boot into the Recovery HD. Select 'Reinstall Mac OS X'. If you purchased Lion as an upgrade to Snow Leopard, the reinstall process will install Lion 10.7.3. If your system came preinstalled with Lion, you might still get Lion 10.7.2. Both installs are a total install of the OS. None of your apps or data will be impacted. Just the OS.

Your ITUNES account can be accessed from any device or computer that has itunes, as long as you have your username and password. Using your itunes account from another device does not affect your ability to use the account from your device.

Hook it up to your computer and open itunes. try to download hte apps via your computer. Every time you update hte software you have to reagree to the itunes terms of service. Sometimes it's hard to get it to come up on the device, but is easier on a computer.
