Computer won't load Windows after installing new CPU fan

My wife's computer's CPU fan quit working so she bought a new one and installed it just now. She turned the compuer on and it  says "Windows failed to Start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause."If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, start up repair can help diagnose and repair the problem. If power was interrupted during start up, close Windows normally." The choses are "Launch repair" or "Start Windows normally." When she chooses either of those, the computer shuts down. If she tries to perform a system recovery, the computer shuts down. She tried loading BIOS defaults (as was suggested on other websites), it had no affect.

Hello anthonydobmann,
You’re having a problem with the computer not booting after replacing the cooling fan.
First I’d make sure that the cable did not come disconnected from the hard drive.
Boot the computer into diagnostics by tapping F2 at startup and run the hard disk  test.
If diagnostics passes try to boot the computer into safe mode by tapping F8 at startup.
If you’re able to load into windows you might have to run the recovery.
Here are some links to run a recovery.
Vista Recovery
Windows 7 recovery
Let me know how everything goes.

  • Computer won't boot up after installing SIIG card

    Hey Everyone,
I having problems with my SIIG FireWire 2-Port PCIe DV card that I've installed into my PowerMac G5 Quad. With the card installed the computer will not boot up, which is the same thing that happened with my previous two models of the card. I installed a new card yesterday and it worked fine all day, but after shutting the computer down for the night and then restarting it in the morning I am experiencing the same problems. The light on the front of the computer turns on, but the screen does not, and after about a minute a loud fan noise comes one. I have the card installed in Slot 2. In Slot 1 I have a ProTools HD card and in Slot 3 I have an AJA Kona LHE card. Even with all of the cards removed the computer still does not boot up. Anyone seen this problem before? Any help or information anybody can offer would be greatly appreciated.
    PowerMac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi, I had the same problem with my dual core G5.
I installed the card and my computer won't boot up. The screen stays gray and the fan keeps spinning.
I contacted SIIG and they said the card is defective, which, I doubt it is.
I then returned it for a refund.

  • Computer won't start up after installing iLife '09

My MacBook Pro is now stuck in a bricked mode after installing iLife '09.
    Install:
    1. The install went perfectly unlike some of the posts I have read.
    2. The installer asked me to register and I chose "later".
    3. The installer asked to restart to complete the process and I accepted.
    4. Then it restarted my machine and the progress spinner just sits there for five minutes...then the computer just shuts off cold.
    Fix Attempts:
    1. Tried restarting manually many times, but it keeps shutting itself off after five minutes of spinning.
    2. Tried zapping my P-Ram by restarting and holding down commandoption+pr a few times, but that didn't help.
    3. Restarted while holding down option to boot Windows XP. Windows booted successfully and then I restarted back in Mac mode, but that didn't help.
    4. I ejected the iLife '09 disc and unplugged the power chord and USB iPhone charger, just in case that has anything to do with the ghost in the machine, but that didn't help either.
I'm left trying to decide what to do. Going to the Genius bar does not appeal to me for various reasons.
Any one else out there experience this problem and get things running again??

Since I don't have the original install discs that came with my computer, I tried these things:
    1. Tried booting in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key at start up, but does not help.
    2. Booted in Single-User Mode by holding down command+s at start up. Then I get the fsck diagnostic by typing in "/sbin/fsck -fy".
Did that three times and get the same response:
    /dev/rdisk0s2
    Root file system
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow.
    Checking Catalog file.
    disk0s2: I/O error.
    Invalid key length
    (4, 25236)
    Volume check failed.
/dev/rdisk0s2 (hfs) EXITED WITH SIGNAL 8
    :/ root#
Then I ran the command "df -hl" to see what the drive space looks like. Looks good enough:
    Filesystem root_device
    Size 80Gi
    Used 68Gi
    Avail 12Gi
    Capacity 86%
    Mounted on /
    Any ideas if this helps??

  • '09 MacBook Pro won't start up after installing new hard drive and restoring from an external hard drive.

I am in the process of replacing my hard drive and have run into a problem. I reinstalled OSX 10.6.3 using a DVD I bought off Amazon. That went well and I then restored my hard drive using an external and Time Machine.
After that, things still looked good but I couldn't log in to my user (and access my MacBook) because my password wasn't working even though my hint was correct. Yes, I am POSITIVE my password was correct; I even tried a couple other passwords to humor myself. I then gave up and decided to restart the computer.
Now my MacBook won't start up at all. It goes o a gray screen with a still loading symbol for a couple minutes and then goes to a solid light blue screen. I've tried starting up while holding command+R and I tied holding just command and neither worked.
Did I install the wrong OSX because I didn't use the same DVD that came with the laptop? Is there something wrong with my hard drive already?
    Please help =[

You probably bought the wrong RAM that has different pin assignments, so it won't fit in the slot. Return it.
I bought 4GB Memory online for my MacBook, so I could get it to run twice as fast.
Doubling the memory does not make your computer run twice as fast.

  • MacBook won't start up after installing new Memory

I have a Macbook White from the year of 2009. It is currently running with 2GB of Memory. I bought 4GB Memory online for my MacBook, so I could get it to run twice as fast.
I turned off my MacBook, removed the battery, and then unscrewed that 'silver thing'. The one that protects and covers the Memory. I took out the two memory 'parts' and then I tried to insert the new ones. I did not get any kind of 'click sound' or what so ever. They were hard to push in and no matter what I did, I was able to pull them out again without using that 'flicker' or what it is called. The thing used to pull the Memory out. I then inserted my old Memory to check if that worked and it did. They made a very small sound and the Memory sort of disappeared into the machine. They were not loose. The major problem was that the other two new Memory parts were 'loose' and would not 'lock' in the computer. When I tried to turn on my MacBook after inserting the new Memory, the screen was black and it made a weird sound like every 3th second. It did this for about 20 seconds and then I turned it off using the power button.
What do I need to do?
    Thanks for reading.

  • Computer won't start-up after installing Intel update :( :( :(

I have no idea what's wrong, but I had an Intel update installed and when I rebooted my machine it wouldn't get past the Apple logo (and hasn't each of the 10+ times I've tried). In fact, when I leave it on the Apple logo at start-up, it attempts a full reboot after about 10 minutes, then proceeds to get stuck in the exact same place. What is going on?!?

I am having the exact same problem - installed the update last night and now I can't get past the grey startup screen. I have tried rebooting from the cd, used disk utility to repair the disc, etc as suggested. I have also booted into single user mode and repaired through there using /sbin/fsck -fy. None of these has done anything...
When repairing I get the message "checking catalog file > incorrect block count for file pcscd.pub > should be 16 instead of 17". this was repaired when booting from the cd and then repaired again in single user mode... Trying to exit from single user mode has caused a whole string of errors "couldnt read user-sspecified computer name/ local hostname/ config daemon no longer available/ etc" mDNSResponder(40...70..120 and still going...]
My computer was working absolutely fine until I installed this update and now I'm completely stuck. ANy help MUCH apprecaited.
Again, you will get better help if you start a new thread. Unlike the OP, you can get into single-user mode. Also unlike the OP, you are running Leopard rather than Tiger. I'd suggest posting your own thread in the Leopard forums.
Very quickly, though, you should rerun fsck/Disk Utility repair until you get a message saying that "The volume <whatever> appears to be OK". If you cannot repair that way, you have to choose between trying a third-party application like DiskWarrior and reinstalling the OS.

  • Has anyone had trouble with their computer recognizing your I phone after installing new hard drive and reloading  I tunes?

Has anyone had a problem with their computer recognizing their I phone ? I had to replace my hard drive And reloaded iTunes but know it doesn't recognize my phone but it will download pictures from it?

I had my HD replaced under the recall program. I am running 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.7 on a 2.8GHz iMac.
I haven't noticed any significantly different behavior of Safari since having my HD replaced and using Time Machine to restore my data. The only thing I've run across in about 2 weeks is that Safari's Preferences panel takes a bit longer to load than I remember.
One thing you can try is launching Safari from your computer's main Applications folder. If it still crashes, you can also try downloadng a fresh copy here: http://www.apple.com/support/safari/
Have you ever checked out Firefox? I personally like it better than Safari because it offers more security options, such as greater control over cookies, and supports many useful privacy and security plugins.

  • Boot failure after installing new cpu, old one wont work either!

    Hi
Got a KT4V-l which was running an Athlon XP 2100+ happily
bought a Sempron 3000+ which i installed, but on power up the board just gave a 2 tone alarm and powered off the system.  so put the Athlon XP back in, booted ok, looked on the MSI site and found the correct bios update.
Installed the bios update, rebooted ok, went into the bios, all seemed fine.  Powered off the machine, out the sempron in, but system gave the 2 tone alarm and powered off.  took out the sempron and put the Athlon XP back in, but the same happened.
now i can't get either cpu to work, and the machine powers off after 2 seconds of being on, with this 2 tone alarm just bleeping until you remove the power.
    any ideas on whats happened!?
    thanks
    Chris

thanks for that suggestion , but it's something to do with the cpu(s), if theres no cpu at all the machine powers on ok, obviously you dont get anything, but it powers on without any beeps or tones
but with either cpu in, it powers on, and about 1-2 seconds it powers off, but theres this 2 tone alarm going on which continues until you unplug it, everything else fans etc.. are off at this point , but just this low, then high tone, not a beep as such which just repeats, low/high pause, low/high etc..
    thanks

  • New Memory Computer won't boot windows

I am running a MSI A58M-E33 running Windows XP
    AMD A Series A4-6300 - 3.7 GHz - 2 Cores - 1 MB Cache - Socket FM2 - Box - AD6300OKHLBOX
    It came with Memory of
    ADATA XPG V1 4GB Desktop Memory Module - DDR3 1600, PC3-12800, Blue - AX3U1600C4G11-SD
It's been running fine since December. I decided to add another memory component. So I bought a duplicate ADATA memory stick
    Now my computer is saying
CPU or Memory Changed !!!! Please enter setup to configure your system.
    Press F1 to run setup.
Press F2 to load default values and continue.
I tried F2 and it goes to load XP and then ask to run in safe mode or normal. I don't see what options to select in the bios for memory. Is there an option to choose what it loads?
I tried taking out the new memory and just using the old memory and it still has the same problem. Same problem with just the new memory or just the old or both together it fails to load. I can access the bios but am unable to load the preinstalled windows os.
Do I have to reinstall windows when installing new memory? I could have sworn the last time I did this on another computer it started no problem.
The only strange thing is though the memory looks the same on the outside. Same stickers same pictures same colors. When I explore my board the old memory is labeled.
    DDR3 memory slot 1: DDR3 SDRAM - Kingmax                                          EWB4GB681CA3-16IC
And the new memory is labeled
    DDR3 memory slot 2: DDR3 SDRAM - A-DATA                                            DDR3 1600
Both say A-Data on the physical memory so I wonder if I was swindled on the original and it really isn't A-Data.
    So what should I do?

Windows XP (non-64 bit) can only detect up to 4 GB of memory.
HOWEVER....a 32-bit system will shadow various memory from the end of memory back towards the beginning. Things such as your video card memory and other various memory components will be shadowed.
On top of that, if you are using the on-board video, the memory allocated to it will start at the 4GB point and work towards the beginning. So if you set it to use 1GB of memory, it will reserve 1 GB of system memory for use with the video card. In that case, you would only have 3GB available. Add in other shadowed components, and you might be at 2.96 available.
All in all, for a 32-bit system, this isn't surprising. Many people don't remember those days, but us old people do.
I would consider upgrading to a 64 bit based OS before going further.

  • New HD won't load Windows XP

I had to install a new HD but it won't load Windows XP, says I need a Bios update.  how do I update the bios update without an operating system?  Lenovo site says to load update via windows.  Do NOT want Vista.  Any suggestions?????

    harix, welcome to the forum,
you do not state which notebook you have, this might be important. However, it may be that you just need to change your S-ATA settings in BIOS from AHCI to compatible mode.

  • HP Pavilion Won't load Windows

I have an HP Pavilion P7-1297 pv Desktop (It's the one they are selling at Sam's Club with the Beats by Dre sound system). The computer starts up just fine and goes through the BIOS screen without any problems. When my computer starts to load Windows, I get a screen shot saying that Windows is starting. After that goes dark, I get the sound Windows makes when it starts and I get a blank screen. The odd thing is, I still have a cursor when everything is blank. I have had this problem since I bought the machine about a month ago. I use this computer at my office and I have only downloaded 2 programs on it. I used to be able to fix it by restarting it with my printer unplugged but that isn't doing the trick now either.
I have run a system test on my programs and did a system restore and neither of those things have worked. I called the help line and got no good answers, other than to pay them for their maintanience fee for a computer that I bought less than a month ago. Anybody had anything like this happen?

First of all I would see if the computer works fine without the printer attached for a day.  I would go to the hp support & driver section at the top of these forums and find the latest driver for your video card and see if you can install it in safe mode or safe mode with networking. If it won't install in safe mode, use the VGA mode (doesn't use the high end graphic of the card and normal mode may load). I think you may have a problem with the high resolution part of your graphic card. I am trying to make sure it isn't software first.  If you can get the latest driver loaded and you still have the problem with the printer disconnected then I would say your video card is going bad.  My guess is that it has a fan that is stuck or not turning well or at all and the chip is overheating.  Do you have any friends that are good with just changing out video cards? They will have to remove the case and view the video card while it is in operation to see if it has a fan and if it is turning. They will have to remove it to see of any of the capacitors are bulged or leaking. Some of the higher end cards have plastic shells around them and may even take some dissemble to check but that would be for a technician.  The better video cards need extra power in order to run them and you may see a cable from the power supply connected to the video card. There is a chance that your power supply is not supplying sufficient power to the video card any longer and someone may have to test the power supply too.
