Computer Won't Power Up

After a BIOS update that went wrong, I received my mobo a few days ago from MSI. I re-assembled my computer 4 days ago, but started having random crashes. Today I decided to test the memory. When running memtest86 the pc just powered off unexpectedly. I switched it back on again, but after a few minutes it shut off again. This time for good.
I disconnected the power cable and plugged it back in. 4 red lights on the D-bracket flashed, the PSU, CPU, Northbridge and case fans moved slightly and then all went dead. I didn't hear any beeps or other sounds. This response lasted less than a second. Same thing happens if I turn off and on the PSU's power switch. The case power switch generates no response at all.
Here is what I've tried already:
- Cleared the CMOS - No changes
- Striped everything, leaving only the CPU, and then re-assembled one component at a time and powered on and off the PSU after re-assembling each component - No changes
- Unplugged the case's power switch cable and direct contacted the 2 pins with a screw driver (to check if the problem was with the case's power switch) - No changes
Any thoughts?

That's exactly what it was. However, I got the pc running for 4 days after MSI solved the BIOS problem. After the power up problem I took the pc to the my local tech service and they said it won't power up because the board is dead. Everything else works OK when instaled on another board.
Blazer, I took the battery out and inserted it again but that didn't fix anything. I have no multimeter, so I couldn't test the battery. How long do these batteries last? My pc is 1 1/2 years old (running 24h a day, 7 days a week).

Computer won't power on - sleeping?

My s3320f desktop is about 6 years old and I'm having a problem now where the computer won't power on. The amber light on the PSU comes on steady but nothing else happens. I had put the computer to sleep using the start button and it powered down normal (there is no light on the power button - should it be amber?). Any suggestions on how to get this computer to power on? I've tried a new power cord, holding the power button for 30 seconds w/o being plugged in, and a new CMOS battery. In the past, I sometimes get a flashing amber power button and have to cut power to get it to stop - does that indicate anything?

I have read your post on how your computer is not able to power on, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! To begin, I will need to ask you a few questions:
Is this an on-going, or recent issue?
Have you added any new software or hardware recently to your desktop?
Is your computer plugged directly into a wall outlet?
In the meantime, I recommend following this document on Computer Does Not Start (Windows Vista). This should help enable your computer to startup once again.

My computer won't power up at all. Battery fully charged. Nothing but black screen.

I tried to use my Mac Book this morning and it won't power up. The battery is fully charged but the screen stays black. Any ideas?

Yesterday I assembled this computer and it was working great. Played games on it and everything.
MSI K9a2 CF, ATHLON 5000+, LC POWER 550W, RADEON 3850 256MB, 2x1G SUPER TALENT 800MHZ RAM.
3 hours ago I went to the store and left 2x PRIME95 torture test running just to check for stability. After 2hours I got home only to find out the the computer has been shut down but the KEYBOARD still had a light on the NUMLOCK led.
So then I unplugged the PSU from power and started up again. But the PC only started for half a second and then the power went off.
So I pulled everything out of the board only to find out that if the CPU POWER 2x2 connector is in the board then it will not power up. Then I also took out the cpu and try to power up without the CPU and with the CPU POWER 2x2 connector in and it also doesn't power up.
Conclusion:
If the 2x2 CPU power connector is in the MB regardless if the CPU is in or not then the computer will not power on. But if the 2x2 CPU power connector is absent then the computer powers up. But that don't do me any good since without that connector the CPU can't function.
I also tried hooking it up to another PSU but it does no good. The MB, CPU, GPU, RAM, HDDS are only 2days old.
Also it couldn't have overheated since the temperatures never went higher than 50C during full load thx to Scythe Ninja Revision B cooler and also there is no smell or any indication that something could be burned. The temps were checked with BIOS as with MSI probe.
My question is is the MB the problem?? So I would know which part to send back for warranty

Computer won't power on

I have a Compac Persario desktop that has been working just fine with no problems. I have had it plugged into a surge protector and shut it down every night or when there is the chance of a storm. Last night, I shut it down like normal, and when I got up this morning, it won't turn on. The power switch on the computer does nothing. Nothing lights up and there is no sound from the cooling fan in the back. Everything else plugged into the surge protector works, including the speakers and the monitor. Could I have a bad power cord? How soon do things like this happen? I've never seen one quit working overnight unless there was an electrical problem, but everything else is working just fine. What should my next step be?

Computer won't power up, again.

Hi Folks,
I bought a new Mac Book Pro a few weeks ago and suddenly the computer was dead. I was unable to turn it on. I took it to the Apple store and they replaced the computer (I was told a dead logic board). When they replaced the computer, they switched Hard Drives from the previous machine.
I took the new computer home, turned it on, put it to sleep and on trying to wake it up learned it was dead, again. It wouldn't power on. I tried reseting the PRAM but to no avail. Another fried logic board me thinks?
Why would this happen twice? Is there a known logic board issue with a batch of the Mac Book Pro's? What causes logic board failures - an exteranal device, power outlets, power adaptors, hard drives?
Please, help. I don't want to exchange this again only to have another failure.
Any advice/info/guidane is appreciated.

That's my intention. It's clear the computer needs to be replaced.
I just wanted to post to the forums to find out if there are any known issues or similar experiences. I also wanted to learn what may cause a logic board failure - such as hard drives or power adaptors - so I'm informed when speaking to someone at the Apple Store.

*HELP!!! Computer Won't Power Up...Shuts Off!*

Ok, I'm not sure if this is the right section, but I'll post here anyway. Mods please move if needed.
Here's the problem:
Several days ago, I went to put my computer to sleep mode before heading to bed. Usually takes a few seconds before the screen shuts down and it goes into sleep mode. After 5 minutes I noticed that the monitor was still on. Went to move my cursor and the mouse was not responding. My computer had basically froze. So me wanting to go to bed, had just pushed the power button on the front of the computer to turn it off. Fast forward to the morning. Pushed power button on...screen turns on with Apple logo and rotating circle thingy (please excuse the non-technical terms). After about 2 minutes, I hear the fan just about to turn on and the computer shuts off! I try it again...same results. Checked the manual and thought re-setting the PRAM settings (Option, Command, P, R) will fix things. Nada. It's been going on for about a week now. I'm not a technical person with computers, so I'm an my ends wit here. This computer is too big to lug over to the Apple Store. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

HELP! Computer Won't Power UP!

Guys, my computer was doing awesome up until this evening. I had it on yesterday and it was fine. I when to turn it on tonight and nothing! I've done nothing to it and it's new....only about 4 months old. I think it's the PSU that's gone bad. The only thing that has been strange one of my fans is making a noise. I thought it was my NB fan but now I think it's my PSU.
When I say I get no power, I mean NO POWER! No LED's come on, no fans turn NOTHING. Like I said, I've done nothing to it either. I have an Enermax 530 Watt PSU and it's new as well as my whole system that I just upgraded. Don't you guys also think it's my PSU since I'm getting no power at all?. Man, I hope this is the problem. I can handle things going wrong but if you don't know what it is that just burns me up!

Thanx for replying. I've done the wall socket thing at the beginning and nada. I also checked all the connections as well. Now I don't have another PCI-E PSU but will a older PSU work? That is one has only 20 pins instead of 24. I can use my older Antec 430 Watt PSU but it's for AGP boards and lacks the 4 pins you need for PCI-E. I thought I read that those PSU's will work with PCI-E mobo's....you just have to move the attachment over to the far left and 4 pins will be open on the board.
I'll have to look how to short two pins on the PSU since I don't know how to do that. Also I didn't realize there was a fuse in the PSU and if there is how do I check it without voiding the warranty. I thought that if you open the PSU that it voids the warranty. I don't want to do that obviously since I'll be sending it back. The stupid thing is only 4 months old. Right now I'm leaning heavily that it's the PSU that's bad though. Can you confirm if I can use a 20 pin PSU with a 24-pin mobo? If so I'll use my other AGP PSU in my new system until Enermax can replace mine.
Right now I'm using my old system that's now my sons and I'm using the same cord and outlet I was using for my new system. Sigh...this is VERY frustrating!

Computer won't power on -- Thoughts?

I purchased a new motherboard, CPU and RAM two weeks ago. Everything installed and ran smoothly for a week. A few days ago I installed the CPU cooler I had bought, a Cooler Master Seidon 120XL. The installation went well, and I had everything back in the case ready to fire up—only it didn't. My PC no longer powers up. For a brief second I see some blue LEDs illuminate and the fans spin, but then everything stops. (I hear no beeps from my speakers.)
I have:
- Checked, double checked, triple checked, quadruple checked the cables
- Looked under the motherboard for loose screws, cables or unnecessary standoffs (nothing)
- Replaced the PSU with a new 750W PSU (original was a 550W)
- Moved the RAM to the other slots, and tried booting with only one stick of RAM
- Uninstalled the CPU cooler and reinstalled the original CPU fan
- Looked for damage on the CPU (found some errant thermal paste, and gently wiped it off)
- Looked for bent pins in the CPU socket (there were none)
- Cleared the CMOS with the clear CMOS button
- Removed the battery for an hour to clear CMOS, then reinstalled it
- Looked for any signs of physical damage to the motherboard (no visible signs)
- Booted without the video card, and booted without the case
- Reconnected old PSU, motherboard/CPU/RAM, HDD and peripherals to my case—they all still function
I suspect the problem lies within the motherboard or CPU. Any suggestions on things to try before I RMA the motherboard? (And possibly the CPU?)

Perhaps try re-installing your old cooler and see if perhaps you have unevenly tightened the one or shorted something out.
Perhaps build it outside on the case on a non-conductive surface. While it is out you can do a better inspection of the cpu socket.

G5 won't power on but light is stuck on!

Today the power in my flat was turned off at the mains after there was a flood in my buildinbg - this happened while my G5 was on. When the power came back on at the mains, I found that the G5 white power light was on at the front, but nothing else happens.
Holding the power button doesn't turn the G5 on or off. It is just stuck with the power light on.
What has happened? Did the mains tripping off blow a fuse or something inside the G5 or is there something I can do to get it to reset? Or is it something worse?

This is truly strange. I'm having the exact same problem. Last night we had a huge lightening storm here, and I powered down the computer, turned off the battery backup, and pulled the plug on the battery backup from the wall socket. After the storm, I reconnected and have exactly the same problem - power light constantly on, but the computer won't power up.
I was looking to start my own thread, but saw this and I guess it makes more sense to join in here. The only difference in artificedesign66's story and mine is that there was no sudden loss of power, everything was shutdown properly. It seemed to be running fine until that point, and did have an APC battery backup/surge protector in place for what that's worth.
I unplugged and replugged a few times last night. When that didn't work, I disconnected everything from the computer (monitor, all usb and firewire, power) and left it that way overnight. This morning I reconnected only the monitor, keyboard/mouse, and power, but still no go.
I do use a third party keyboard that lacks the power button - I use the one on the face of the cpu. Is there any value in digging the apple keyboard out of the basement to try that?

Help! Macbook Pro won't power up!

Hi, I have a new 2011 MBP 15" (1.5 months old).
When its up and running it works fine, and I'm able to shut down and restart it normally. As soon as I leave it off for more than a few hours (usually this happens overnight when I shut down the computer before going to bed)
The next morning the computer won't power up at all. When I press the power button I can hear something whirring/spinning and then 3-5 secs later the power just cuts off. The screen doesn't even light up, I don't get to hear the apple chime at all. Repeated attempts to power up the system get this same result.
I suspected it was due to cold weather (winter in Perth now). I find that every cold morning if i warmed up my macbook placing it near the heater, it will be able to boot normally after it has warmed up. But if ever the machine gets a chance to cool down, it goes into a coma? This happens when I put the mac to sleep and am away from it for more than an hour, it won't wake up!
This is so dissapointing to come from a product that comes at such a premium price. I hope I can get some help on this! It's really really frustrating.
I am reset the PRAM and SMC several times and they dont seem to do the trick. I ran the apple hardware tests, even in extended mode and they all detect no problems. Hellpppp

How cold is cold where your MBP is? In any case take it to an Apple store or AASP. If none availanle call AppleCare.

G5 Power LED on, won't power up

I just purchased a used Dual 2.5 GHz Power Macintosh G5 in immaculate condition. Worked fine for a couple of days, though I did notice that the fans would spin up loudly for a few seconds every now and then even while the computer was idle.
I decided to reset the PMU (which I have done many times over the years; I was once an Apple-trained systems engineer)I followed the recommended procedure; only pressed once, etc. Now the computer won't power up! The front power LED comes on and stays on when the AC cord is connected, but the computer doesn't start up or otherwise react to the power button. No fans, no video, nothing.

Well, the computer is back up - a good thing, as it was an eBay purchase; returning it for another wasn't an option.
Apparently, when Apple says power up the computer 10 seconds after resetting the PMU, they mean WITHIN 10 seconds - pressed the CUDA, quickly plugged it in, and hit the power switch. Came up with fans at full power, what must have been LED #8 on, then settled down. Won't do that again. It also seems the odd fan behaviour that prompted the whole mess is gone.
You know, it shouldn't be this tricky. I remember resurrecting several QuickSilvers, which our service department had waiting for power supplies, by means of a CUDA reset. Apparently they hadn't done it "just right" and decided it was dead.

Pavilion dv7 3079wm won't power up with/without battery or ac cord

Tried to power up with a.c. cord or battery. Leads flash once attempts to start, then goes out.

I hope you folks won't mind my piggy-backing on this thread. I have a very similar problem with a dv7 (belongs to my grandmother).
When I plug in the AC adapter, the small LED next to the socket usually does not light up, but will flash briefly when the power cable is removed. The AC adapter is fine, because I've used it to charge and run my dv5 with no problems. If I unplug and then plug the AC adapter into the socket repeatedly, eventually at some random point the LED will stay on.
However...
The battery light is slowly flashing. It flashes anytime the AC adapter is plugged in (whether or not the LED next to the jack lights up).
The computer won't power up. It tries to for a second or two, then shuts down... as if the battery was critically low.
Now the thing that puzzles me -- The computer won't start up on AC power without the battery installed. I can do this on my dv5 with no problem. It does not require the battery to be installed. I figured if the battery is completely dead in the dv7, that it may be confusing the system and not allow it to start at all. But, trying to start up the dv7 without a battery does absolutely nothing at all.
I'm hoping that the dv7 is designed to always work with a battery and that all I need to do is just install a new one. Does that seem sensible? I just don't want to buy one (they cost a whopping $140 from HP!) only to find that the computer is suffering from a more serious problem.

Nano won't power on, but shows up in My Computer and iTunes

I recently replaced the screen in my Nano and for about a day it worked fine. Then I opened it back up to clean off a smudge and now it's slightly less than functional.
First off before anyone asks, I use a PC, not a Mac. I run Windows XP Home Edition. And my iTunes version is 6.0.4.2.
Now my problem...
When not connected to my computer the device is useless, it won't power on, the wheel is unresponsive, no sound comes from the headphones, it's dead.
But when I connect it to my computer it shows up in My Computer and in iTunes and all of my songs show up and I can double click them and play them, but the screen on the Nano still remains dark and the wheel still does nothing.
Another strange thing is that My Computer and iTunes will only recognize it when I turn "hold" on. If hold is off it refuses to show up at all.
I downloaded the latest iPod software and it stopped showing up at all, so I uninstalled that and reverted back to whatever version I have now. I've tried to let it charge for 24 hours, that did nothing. I formatted it and let my computer re-install it's system files and what-not, that did nothing. I've tried to reset it, nothing. And I've mashed all the buttons and circled around the wheel endlessly to no avail.
I really have no clue what might have caused this or how to fix it, if anyone has any suggestions I'm willing to try them, because at this point it can't get that much more broken.
So um, thanks for any help. If anyone actually manages to help me fix this thing and you have a PayPal account I'll toss you like $20 or something for your time, because it's cheaper than buying a new Nano.

Wow. I have no idea, I have never opened my ipod to do any do-it-yourself repairs. Of course (as you probably already know) your warranty is now voided since you opened it up and made alterations to it.
I wouldn't know where to start troubleshooting this, as I am unclear as to the cause of the issue.

Just tried installing an update to OS. Although the screen tells me that the installation will be completed in less than one minute, that was two hours ago, and the computer won't permit me to shut it down via the power button, as I get an error sound.

Hold the power key till it shuts down, it may take a little while, try holding it thru the warning.
Then if it shuts down restart and open Safari/Preferences, General tab, and set "Save Downloaded Files to:"
Select desktop, if desktop is not available in the the drop down menu, click other, then select Desktop from the column from the on the left.
Then download this:

This will download the "stand alone installer"
Click on the installer pkg and follow the prompts.
