My Windows7 Computer won't recognize my iPod Touch ver 3.1.3.  Will upgrading the iOS help?

Just resolved; Apple Mobile Device USB Driver had to be installed.

  • Storage space full of "other", computer won't recognize iPod is plugged in

I just downloaded about 100 songs onto my 160 gigabyte iPod Video Classic, making my number of songs only about 1,300. My iPod says its storage now only has 1.9 mb left. I only have about 10 videos and no photos, but the "other" section of the storage content bar takes up a ton of space. It had none before. How do I remove the "other" from my iPod? Now my computer won't recognize any iPod when I plug it in, and I've tried multiple plugs.

Connect the iPod to a USB2.0  port, on the Computer itself and not a USB hub or those found on the Apple keyboard.
If iTunes launch, close it back.
If your iPod is found on your Desktop, then run DiskUtility, (if not then Reset the iPod while connected to the Mac)
    Select you iPod
Click FirstAid Tab on the right window.
    Press the Repair button.
After Repair finish, iTunes may launch and ask to Restore, this will delete all the data in your iPod.
if iTunes did not launch, just Reset iPod again while connected to your Mac.
Always don't use USB hub or the Keyboard USB port or else your problem will come back, as the power is insufficient from these shared ports for iPod harddisk write process.
    Good Luck!

  • Computer won't recognize ipod and ipod flases foler with exclamation point

Last week, my computer randomly said it did not recognize my ipod. I continued to use it and figured I'd worry about updating it another time. Then today, I was using my nano and it stopped and flashed the folder with the exclamation point icon and below the icon directed my to Apple's support website. I've tried most of the things I've seen in the forums, and I really have no clue what to do. Everytime I try to turn it on, the icon comes up and everytime I try to connect to iTunes my computer won't recognize it.

    rfletche,
Just confirming... have you seen these articles?

  • Computer won't recognize iPod and iPod is frozen

Just pulled my iPod out of it's case. When I went to install the software, the computer won't recognize the iPod Nano. I've tried all 6 USB ports. Computer states:
"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it."
Now the iPod has locked up, won't change screens or makes any sounds. I've gone through the help guide, but toggling the hold button doesn't help either.

I had the same problem with mine! I took it out of the box and it was working just fine, but as soon as I plugged it into the computer, the screen froze and the computer reported the exact same error message. I've tried resetting it, but none of the buttons work now, and I even tried restoring it, but the computer doesn't even recognize that it's an ipod nano. I'm starting to wonder if I need to just replace it.

  • Computer won't recognize ipod

We had work done to our computer and they had to take everything off the computer and reload the operating system. My itunes were restored, but when I connect my ipod the computer won't recognize my ipod and the songs I recently downloaded from the itunes store won't synchronize. Any thoughts?

I am having the same problem. I recently got a new iPod nano 3rd gen, connected it to iTunes and my computer and it was all well and good. I then connected it for a second time, all fine. But ever since then my computer says "one of the devices connected to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it". My iPod works absolutuely fine apart from that. Any suggestions?

  • Can't reopen Itunes once it has been closed without computer restart.  Can't acces Itunes store 3/4 of the time.  Itunes won't recognize Ipod Touch 5  Help?!

Since my Itunes was updated I have had nothing but problems.  When I open Itunes, the majority of the time I can not access the itunes store, though I can occasionally.  I have good internet connection.  I followed Itunes help associated with that and even downloaded the latest version of my graphics card.   Then if I close out of Itunes and go back to reopen it will not reopen at all.  The only way I can reopen it is by restarting my computer.  The other thing is that I have a brand new Ipod touch and Itunes does not recognize it.  Help!!!   I hate Itunes 11.0!!   If I didn't already have 7 Ipods and a song library of 6000, I would walk away from apple right now!!!

Okay for my issue I ended up calling Apple Support and getting a solution!   Yahoo!  It appears to be working properly without having to go back to the old version of Itunes, as was suggested by someone in this forum.   I have Windows 7, and they did suggest to makes sure my Windows 7 was updated, along with my Video Card.   The tech had me uninstall Itunes and Reinstall it, however she stressed to me that if it was not uninstalled in the proper order, Itunes still would not work after the re-install.
The proper order to uninstall Itunes from the add or remove programs, is:
    1st Itunes
    2nd Quicktime
    3rd Apple Software Update
    4th Apple Mobile Device
    5th Bonjour
    6th Apple Aplication Support
Following the uninstall I shut the computer off completely for one minute, then powered it back up, and went to www.itunes.com to reinstall the software.   Seems to be working now, with my Windows 7, without having to revert back to the old version of itunes.

  • Computer doesn't recognize ipod touch 4g?

So, I recently updated iTunes to iTunes 11.
I've had this iPod touch 4g 8gb for 8 months now (same computer too) and I've never had a problem with it.
It wasn't until I updated iTunes that it started not to recognize it.
I've tried uninstalling itunes and reinstalling - didn't work.
I tried restarting computer, taking out the battery, disconnecting it - didn't work.
I tried using the device manager to uninstall it - didn't work.
I tried "DFU mode" (which really had no point because the computer itself won't recognize it, much less iTunes) - didn't work.
I connected it to another computer, said the same thing - "USB Device not recognized". I reset my iPod - didn't work.
USB cable seems to be fine, no scratches, no cuts. What should I do?

    - Try another cable
    - Inspect the dock connector for bend or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store.

  • ITunes won't recognize iPod touch since Snow Leopard

I convinced my dad to get Snow Leopard (the low price helped), and he loaded it onto his macbook pro, but now his iPod touch won't mount – it charges from the USB port, but iTunes doesn't recognize it. We plugged in my iPhone to see if it would work, and it started iPhoto, but not iTunes. That shows pretty conclusively that the trouble is with iTunes software. We haven't tried reinstalling it because I'm worried he'll lose all of his many playlists and settings. Any suggestions?

    Hello JacobST,
Have you tried resetting the iPod touch with it connected to the Mac? To do this, press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons together until the unit powers off. Then press and hold the Sleep button until the Apple logo appears.
If not luck with that, work through the troubleshooting steps provided in this Apple support document. You can choose to skip the re-installation of iTunes until later, but do know that it will have no affect on the media or settings, because this information is stored elsewhere on his Mac.

  • Itunes (Mac) won't recognize ipod touch - please help!!

Hi. I have a brand new 4th-gen ipod Touch. I'm running Snow Leopard and iTunes 10.4.1 on a Macbook. I have three other ipods (classic, shuffle x 2) and they all work fine. THe USB cable and port work fine with other ipods (and with this one on the rare occasions it works properly) and the ipod touch, when it's cooperating, seems to function OK so I don't think it's a hardware failure. It hasn't been dropped/wet, and I've only used it for 4 days.
Bit of a saga and I'm getting seriously fed up!
The ipod touch synced OK the first time I went to set it up, I installed some music/apps and all seemed fine. Then the next time itunes wouldn't recognize it so I couldn't sync (it just charges through the USB but does nothing else). So I ran through all the suggested tests on Apple support (turning on/off, checking I had the right versions of stuff, etc), that didn't help so I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes 10. That worked, and the ipod touch synced and I was able to use it again. BUT, the day after that, it went back to not being recognized. Tried everything again, reinstalled itunes - that worked. Then the next day... not recognized again!
So I phoned Apple support, and the guy told me to hard reset and restore factory settings, which I did but it failed: first time it didn't restore (was just same as before). Second time I tried it froze and I got Error #1611. Tried again and got Error #1618 which isn't even listed on the Apple Support page the error message links to (by this stage it was showing the plug into itunes screen you get when you first turn it on, but only when plugged into a USB port - wouldn't turn on when not connected). So I called Apple Support again (different person this time) and was told it was a possible hardware failure and I should take it to my local Apple Reseller.
Apple Reseller staff looked at it, confirmed that it'd only turn on when connected to computer, so they plugged it into one of theirs and restored the factory settings. THis time successful (ipod working again) but went to sync to itunes and AGAIN it wouldn't recognized it. Went through the whole uninstall/reinstall process for itunes and got the ipod to sync. But now.... not recognized again!! I can't keep uninstalling and reinstalling itunes every time I want to sync the ipod, that's just ridiculous.
Has anyone else had this problem? And does anyone know how to fix it?

I think I might have fixed it (touch wood, cross fingers, etc)...
    Here's what I did:
In Finder, under "Go", select "Go to folder".
When the box comes up, enter this folder name: /system/library/launchdaemons
    Click "go"
    Locate this file: com.apple.usbmuxd.plist~orig
    Put it in the trash
(NB: there's also a file called "com.apple.usbmuxd.plist" in that folder - don't touch that one)
    Restart computer
    Open itunes, connect ipod
If the ipod appears in itunes, restart and try again to confirm it's working.
This came from instructions someone else posted on another Apple discussion about an ipod touch not syncing. That reply said to do the software updates from the Apple menu first, but I did that and they failed to install but the above still worked, so the updates might not be necessary.

  • Comp. won't recognize ipod touch 4g after ios4.3 update

So i updated my ipod 4g to ios4.3 and it downloaded and installed fine but then my computer didn't recognize my ipod. A window came up saying that "itunes has detected an ipod in recovery. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes." I then restored it but it didn't finish and the same window appeared. I tried restoring a second time but then an error appeared "Error (-1)"
I tried looking up what that error was but it is not in the support/help portion in the apple website. So now my ipod is just sitting here, fully plugged in with the connect to itunes screen.
I also updated to the latest version of itunes BEFORE I tried to update to ios4.3. I rechecked to make sure itunes updated but it stated that it did. Please help anyone!
Oh, I have a PC with Windows 7.

Have a similar problem. My computer is PC with 64 bit windows 7. Itunes is version 10.2.1.1. I use Microsoft Security Essentials for virus/firewall.
Anyways, I did the update this morning. When download finally finished, ITunes began updating my IPod touch & I got a single error (I didn't catch it, but may have been something like 1620 or 1602). I restarted my computer to try everything over again. I booted up and loaded Itunes, but it wasn't saying anything, and I also noticed my IPod wasn't showing up either. I checked, and it was still plugged in, but I did notice that it had a screen with a usb plug pointing to Itunes like I should plug in my Ipod, but it was plugged in.
I checked on internet a bit & didn't find much that was very helpful. I did find one thing on Apple support that sometimes driver gets messed up on update (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538), so I tried that. This entailed deleting the usb driver for apple mobile devices, and then scanningn for new devices, and restoring the apple mobile device driver from a directory under the C drive (c:/program files/common files/apple/mobile device support/drivers). Updating to this file gives a driver that calls itself "Apple Recover (iBoot) USB Driver" with a driver date of 2/11/2011. This has no effect, and I still have the same screen on my IPod and it doesn't show up in Itunes.
On internet I found that my IPod seems to be in a recovery mode, and I tried a couple of the listed methods to get out of the recover mode (these all failed for me, but maybe they'll help someone else). I held down both home & power buttons for 10 sec and then letting go of just the power button. Then you wait until after apple logo dissapears (about another 10 sec) and then you let go of the home button. This is supposed to start the recovery mode for your IPod, but for me I just get a blank screen. There is also a reverse method that does either a DFU or Recovery mode. For that method you just reverse the releasing of the Home and Power buttons, but that just got me back to the usb+itunes screen instead of to a blank screen.
While doing both of these things, I did notice that it would sometimes replace the Recovery Driver with a DFU driver, or sometimes you'd get 2 non-working Recovery drivers. None of these drivers had any effect on Itunes being able to see my IPod. The Apple Recovery (iBoot) USB Driver only comes up when you do the apple support option.
Hopefully this error is widespread enough that it will get apple's attention and a fix will come forth shortly. I'm at my wit's end trying to fix it.

  • Mac won't recognize iPod Touch after library move

Ever since my music library outgrew my internal hard drive and I moved it to my Time Capsule, my computer doesn't recognize my iPod Touch when I plug it in, though the iPod is charging from the USB port. I've deleted iTunes, rebooted and reinstalled in accordance with one of Apple's help pages, but to no avail. I've also tried creating a new empty iTunes library on my internal hard drive and starting iTunes from that, but that hasn't worked either. Any ideas?

I've followed all steps in the following troubleshooting documents:
    "iPod touch not appearing in iTunes" sections 1-7;
    "Mac OS X v10.6 or later: iOS device not recognized in iTunes after restart";
It may be of interest that I do not have the file "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbmuxd.plist~orig", which the latter document recommends deleting. I suspect that that file is either unnecessary or it should be recreated by iTunes, so it seems an unlikely candidate for the source of the problem, however.
