Computer won't shut down, delay when starting up

When shutting down MacBook Pro (mid 2010), computer gets stuck at the grey screen and will only shut down when I hold down the power button.  Also, when starting up the computer, it takes longer than usual to get to the user screen.  Prior to the user screen, it sounds like the computer is trying to run a disk, but there is no disk in the drive.  Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly to restart.

    First welcome to the discussions.

After reading all the reports on Norton and disruptive behavior it causes in OSX I would recommend UnInstalling it.
You might have an issue with something else causing your problem but reading through the link above and UnInstalling Norton is a good start to isolate your issue.

  • Battery gets very hot during use and doesn't last long, fan runs at high speed, computer won't shut down

Macbook Air isn't a year old and I don't leave it plugged in ever. The battery might last 2 hours and gets very hot. In addition the fan runs at a very high speed. The computer won't shut down in a normal way. I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. Can someone suggest something please.
    Thanks.

  • My computer won't shut down

My mac book won't shut down, the wheel continues to whirl and I end up forces the shut down, why is this happening? I haven't installed anything new.

You might want to post your question over in MacBook Discussions
I would suspect at this point that the directory - your filesystem - may be corrupt as a side effect of this behavior, but that there could be a (USB) device or software that is hindering shutting down.
When you reboot, try running FSCK to repair the drive from the command line (single user mode, by booting with the command and s key held down), or booting from the Install DVD, or, from your system backup on external USB/FW drive.
I would start with a SAFE BOOT by holding down the SHIFT key on startup and see if that helps.
Try booting Apple Hardware Test (Disk #1, hold down "d" key on startup) to check the hardware.
Backup. Restore your disk drive to a USB/FW drive - you can use Apple Disk Utility -> Restore or 3rd party software.

  • My computer won't shut down or restart b/c it says that I need to close Safari.  However, my Macbook won't allow me to shut down Safari.  How do I resolve this?

How do I get my Macbook Pro to shut down.  It won't allow me to, b/c it says that Safari needs to close.  However, Safari is closed, and when I re-open Safari to try to Quit Safari, it isn't in bold to allow me to Quit.  How do I resolve this issue?

    Force Quit .
Press command + option + esc keys together at the same time.
    Wait.
When Force Quit window appears, select the application if not already.
Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window.
    Wait.

If this does not help, press the power button for 7 or more seconds.

  • Computer won't shut down.

When I try to shut my computer down, it thinks for a minute or so, and then will give me an error message about a program (iTunes, iChat, Safari, anything) not shutting down correctly. It tells me to close the program properly and try again. Usually, these programs were properly closed in the first place, but the computer still will not shut down. What should I do?

If you would like to try something instead of just de-powering, try this:
Press Command, Option, and then Escape, holding down each one after you press it.
This should bring up your Force Quit menu. From there, quit out of the programs it lists as giving you an error.
Then you can proceed with your shutdown as normal, as opposed to doing it manually.

  • PowerMac G4 (Mirror door drive) shuts down automatically when starting up.

I use a PowerMac G4 (Mirror door drive) 1.25 Ghz processor with1.25 GB ram, 80GB HDD. OS 10.2.7
Recently I could not start the machine as it automaticallyshuts down during starting when the log in dialog box appears. It also creates excessivesounds (hopefully from the processor fan) during starting up.
What is the possible cause for it? Upgrading the OS (10.5.8) could solve it? Or suggestions from exparts like you? Plz Help.

Thanks BDAqua. Sorry, no actionsworked. I think, the possible cause might be, the processor heats up more andthe fan start rotate more to cool down the processors and it makes the sound. But processor becomes hotter and the CPU automatically shuts down.
Apple service center in my townseparated, cleaned and reinstalled the processor & motherboard from thecase but NO IMPROVEMENT. They are trying to suggest (with confusion) changingthe processor. Do the diagnosis going right path? They do not have any G4 1.25 GHzprocessor, where will I get it?  Anysuggestions from the experts of this forum?

I suddenly cannot open my mailbox.  When I tried to restart my computer (thinking THIS might help), I get the message "The application Mail canceled shut down."  Any ideas?  Thank you!

Right click the Mail icon in the dock, then click option to force quit the mail program.

  • Ipad2 won't shut down even when i press the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time.

I can't shut down my ipad2 even when i press and hold the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time.

If the screen appears to be zoomed in, then does tapping the screen with three fingers zoom you back out ? When zoom is on you should also be able to scroll around the screen using three fingers on the screen.
If you are seeing the keypad then that should be for the iPad's passcode, I assume that you have one set ? If the iPad is disabled then I wouldn't expect the keypad to show.

  • Mail won't open or quit so I cannot shut down my computer.Mail won't open or quit. computer won't shut down as a result

Mail wont open or quit so I cannot shut down my computer

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, select that application, and press the Force Quit button. If that doesn't work, save and close everything you can and use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to force quit the loginwindow process.

  • Disc drive won't eject and then computer won't shut down

When the computer first boots the drive will eject fine but after using it for some time when I hit eject the eject symbol shows on screen but the disc never ejects. If I click the dvd icon to eject it that way then the dvd icon disappears.
Then if I restart the computer all the icons disappear leaving just the wallpaper and spinning beach ball and I have to do a hard power down.
This has happened with another dvd drive as well.
    Any ideas?

I did have the energy saver set to put the hard drives to sleep. I unchecked it and will run for a few days to see if this resolves it.
    Thanks for your post.

  • My system won't shut down

I have a 2.1GHz PowerPC G5 with OS X10.4.8 which is 16 month old. It worked fine until yesterday. Now It acts wierd in the following two ways:
First, the computer system won't shut down. When I click on Shut Down Button on the Screen, it won't shut down. Instead the screen shows the clock for ever unless I shut it down manually by pressing the Start button at the back of the computer.
Second, when I click on Software Update, it shows "Checking for new software..." window forever with the progress bar stuck at about one fifth.
Does any of you have a solution to these problems?

  • External hard drive won't shut down after switch from OS10.5 to OS10.4.11

i recently chanded my OS from 10.5 to 10.4.11 (as a programme i want to use is not compatible with leopard), but since i have done this my external hard-drive won't shut down automatically when i shut down my mac. i have to switch it off at the plug instead.
can anyone suggest how i can get it to do this again?
i'm a little concerned that i'm damaging the external drive by turning it off manually all the time..
    thanks

Some hard drives shut off with shutdown, some don't. Sometimes hard drives that did shut off with one system will not do the same with a different system. My hard drives which did shut off, prior to 10.5 now stay on.
This is not really a problem as all hard drives spin down after 10- 20 minutes when not in use, whether your computer is on or off. Leaving the drive on is fine, shutting it off manually is fine.

  • No Keyboard Shortcuts & Won't Shut Down

I've been using Leopard since it came out and every once in a while I'll come across a time where none of my keyboard shortcuts won't work. For example command+tab doesn't work to switch between applications, control+arrow key doesn't work to change spaces, etc.
Also, when this happens, the computer won't shut down. Clicking "Shut Down" will remove the top menu panel, but then it just sits there...forever...
I was hoping the latest update would fix this problem but it hasn't. I'm not running Quicksilver as some other posts have mentioned. I'm using both Camino & Safari for web browsers, iTunes, and EyeTV...that's it...
Has anyone else seen this or have any fixes? I can't seem to find a bug report on it either. Thanks.

Ok, I think I found more information here and was hoping someone could confirm. I have a Windows share that I mount to the Mac via SMB. If I shut down the Windows PC while the drive is still mounted on the Mac, I experience these problems. Particularly the not being able to shut down part.
If someone else could try this I'd appreciate it!
