Computer won't sleep on Energy Saver mode

All of a sudden, the computer will not sleep while on Energy Saver mode. Any ideas on how to locate the culprit?
Thanks!

Hi, seb29. One possible culprit is a fax software setting: if the computer is set up to receive faxes, it either won't sleep at all or won't stay asleep for long. In the Print & Fax pane of System Prefs, click the Faxing tab and make sure "Receive faxes on this computer" is not checked.

  • Will Not Sleep In Energy Saver Mode

My iMac G5 20" 1.8Ghz will not sleep when I set it to sleep in the energy saver panel. This just started for no specific reason a few months ago. It will sleep fine when selected from the Apple menu. I have been through the discussions and no one seems to have a good fix for this. I have repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and SMU, and tried all the different configurations in energy saver. I called AppleCare and they seemed not to know anything about this issue. They recommened an archive and reinstall of the operating system. I feel this is kind of drastic for this and I have not yet tried it unless I can see that other people have done it and it works. My computer is in the repair program for the power supply problem and it has an updated power supply since the original actually smoked and Apple replaced it. I was wondering if anyone out there has had this same sleep issue and got it resolved?

Well I finally decided to try and delete an application that I suspected could be a problem not allowing my computer to sleep automatically. That application is LAST FM a music service from the UK which is actually quite good. I suspected it was a problem since it would always launch when I opened iTunes and asked if I wanted to share my iTunes library with the LAST FM group which I did not. I selected I did not want to share in the LAST FM preferences but it still opened anyway when I launched iTunes. I deleted the program and repaired disk permissions and *It Worked*, my computer will now go to sleep with the settings I selected in energy saver. I know there are other people out there with this problem I would first look at this application and others that are probably running in the backround causing your computer not to sleep automatically. I am a firm believer in trying to work up from the easiest solution before taking the drastic approach, such as a system reinstall, or a logic board replacement. I did take Nikki's suggestion seriously. My power supply had been replaced in the repair program and my logic board did not meet the criteria for replacement since it was not exibiting the symptoms that required its replacement such as video and power problems.

  • Display won't sleep using energy saver settings.

I’ve had this problem for some time. I repaired permissions and the sleep timer worked for about a day and then never again. I’ve tried closing all applications that might be running something, didn’t work. Reset pram and tried all the other things I’ve read about and nothing works. My son, who is a system admin and knows OS and Windows said he was having the same problem running Yosemite. I’m running 10.8.5 on a late 2010 iMac.

    Long shot.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • Does iPad Air have a sleep/energy saver mode?

    Hello~
I just bought this iPad (first one) and can't find anything about a "sleep" or "battery saver" mode.  I don't want to turn it off, but I don't need it sitting there glowing.  Plus, can't that hurt the screen?
    Thanks!

OMG.  I feel like an idiot.  I've looked everywhere, but for some reason never opened that menu item.  THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!  You ROCK!!!!

  • My McPro only turns  off the screen in standy by (energy save mode)

My MacPro doesn’t go to standby (energy save mode) the only one what he does is to turn of the monitor. No any devices connected only the keyboard and mouse and of course a monitor.
I would be appreciated for any help.

    Thomas

Do you have any PCI cards installed, such as RAID or Fiber Channel?
Enable power button sleep (Options button in Energy Saver system preference), unplug ALL USB devices (including the keyboard and mouse) and the display, then press the power button (just a quick press). Does it sleep (power light pulsating)?
    Try a SMU reset

Try a PRAM by restarting the computer while holding down the Command, Option, P, and R keys until you hear the startup sound a second time.

  • MBP 2011, Screen Brightness in Energy Saver mode issue?

    hi,
got a new 2011 MBP 17', setup dim in energy saver mode & plugged in an external DVI monitor via Thunderbolt port.  energy mode dims & blanks LCD but the external screen does not.  It does however then turn off and lock when display sleep is reached.
anyone any ideas if this is just a "feature of the new port" that we need to ask apple about or have i missed something?
FYI,  energy saver pref screen pops up only on 1 screen.  displays pref pops up on both but currently only the MBP LCD screen has a brightness and auto adj settings.  external screen just has resolutions & refresh rate options.
    thanks,
    Simon.

Nope - on my wife's MB (i.e. 13" MacBook, unibody/late 2008), there's no 'custom setting' or 'Details' when clicking on the menu bar battery icon. There is a shortcut to the Energy Saver preference pane, but no option to control brightness in that preference pane other than the checkbox I mentioned above. You can set timers for display sleep, etc., of course.
So, what I see on my MBP, what I see on my wife's MB, and what you're seeing on your MBP seem to be the same. If you have access to a MacBook, check again - if you find the setting your thinking of, post a screenshot...

  • Enable Energy Saver mode on a schedule

    Hello-
Is there a way to set the Energy Saver mode on a Canon iR-ADV C2220 to turn on and off on a schedule? I'm hoping to set it so it is on Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm. Is this at all possible?

  • Computer still sleeps with Energy Saver off

So in energy saver both of the scrollers are on Never and my computer still sleeps...please help

It sounds to me some sort of corruption is happening to your Energy Saver preferences. As a temporary fix you may want to try my Spindown Fix program which forces the Unix settings for Energy Saver to no longer go off. It does though have to be run at every Login (startup) to be effective:

  • Mac mini won't auto-sleep (via energy saver)

I've tried almost everything! SMC reset, PRAM reset, scheduled works fine but the energy saver settings don't. I'm only getting a screen shut but the little lamp in the mini does't fade in and out. help please.

I'm having the same problem. I just got my Mini this weekend.
After setting it up initially, the energy saver sleep worked fine.
And I haven't installed too many things since. I did an upgrade of various mac apps through the software updater and I installed a shutterfly plugin for iPhoto but nothing else really.
I didn't notice exactly when it stopped working.
The only thing I have connected via USB is the mouse/keyboard/speaker through KVM.
Even though I had those from the beginning, I'm going to try connecting them directly to the mini.
Other than that, I only have a network share setup with my Windows machine.
Any updates from the OP or others with the same problem would be great if you've gotten yours fixed.

  • Button to toggle between display energy saver modes?

Normally I keep my System Preferences: Energy Saver option set to put my G4 iBook display to sleep after one minute, to save the screen's life expectancy.
However, I have some applications that don't work with that setting-- so when I use those apps, I have got to the Apple: System Preferences: Energy Saver option and drag the bar over to where the display is Never put to sleep.
Then when I'm done with the app, I have to do it all over again to reset putting the display to sleep after 1 minute.
Is there some kind of macro or script to get where I can press a button and toggle betwee these 2 power save modes?
    Thanks

    Hi Christopher!
Axl's suggestion is an excellent one!
The procedure is explained, with a bit more detail, HERE.
    Quote:
"Not really a shortcut, but this method, will enable you to quickly access the Energy Saver pref pane.
    Open System Preferences.
From the Toolbar's System Preferences contextual menu, select Hide System Preferences.
System Preferences is still loaded, as you can see the black triangle under the Dock Icon.
If you position the cursor on that, and hold down on the mouse, a hierarchal menu will appear.
From that you can navigate to any Preference Pane in SP.
When you have finished with the Pane, select Hide System Preferences once again.
You just have to remember to Hide rather than close SP."
    Good Luck!

  • Computer won't 'sleep' or screensaver activate

So, I finally just upgraded to Leopard last week. And seems that ever since I did that, my computer will not 'sleep' or the screen saver will not start according to my settings. It will just stay on if left for a long time w/ no screen saver, sleeping, etc.. any suggestions?

    Hi silentbry
Make sure you have the latest Firmware applied to your iMac. To find out use Software Update and follow the instructions there, if you find an available update.
    Delete the following files:
    Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/System Configuration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/System Configuration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
After that, create these files anew by configuring the Energy Saver System Preferences again.
If this didn't help, reboot your computer and reset the NVRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Hope this helps

  • Adjust Screen Brightness in Energy Saver modes?

Can I set a custom screen brightness level in both Battery and Power Adapter modes? The Mac seems to always default to a certain level, but can this be changed?

  • Sleep Disorder (Energy Saver Prefs)

I tried in the hardware section about this, maybe I can get some help here:
My new Intel iMac seems to have a sleeping disorder. Does anyone out there have the Information Technology equivalent of Ambien CR?
I have my Energy Saver Preferences set to 22 minutes to put the system sleep and 15 minute to put the display to sleep. It doesn't seem to work.
Also, if I just put my iMac to sleep manually using the menu command in the Finder, it will go to sleep initially, but when I come back a few hours later it is on -- not sleeping. Am I going to have to shut this thing down whenever I'm not using it?
    1) I have checked the box "Put the hard drive to sleep whenever possible" in the the Sleep Pane of the Energy Saver System Preferences
    2) In the Options Pane of the Energy Saver System Preferences under Schedule there are NO active settings to start/wake my iMac.
    3) I have disconnected my external hard drives and my Wacom tablet to see if that made any difference. It did not. the only other peripheral is my Apple USB Modem, which I need to connect. I am not connected when I attempt to put the system to sleep
I have both put the computer to sleep and come back several hours later to see that it woke up. On another occasion I was reading on the sofa in the same room with the iMac and saw it wake up. When I saw it wake up there was no noticeably external noise or vibration in the house which might have caused it to wake up. It just woke up.
What is the point of even having an Energy Saver Preference if it doesn't work?
Does anyone have any more suggestions for troubleshooting this?

    Hi, Wet Baloney.
    1. Trash all the energy saver preferences:1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    2. Open the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder.
    3. Trash the following two files therein:• com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    • com.apple.AutoWake.plist
You may be prompted for your Admin password when you trash these files.
Note that the second file is only extant if you have used the Schedule option to schedule startup, sleep, or shutdown.
    4. Empty the Trash.
    5. Launch System Preferences and reset the Energy Saver preferences accordingly.2. re: Modem:• In the Options tab of Energy Saver preferences, if "Wake when modem detects a ring" is selected (checked) deselect (uncheck) this option.
    • In the Print & Fax Preferences > Faxing tab, deselect "Receive faxes on this computer" if selected. With those options selected, I've seen my sleeping Macs wake up if a phone line was connected to the computer and a call came in on that line.
    Good luck!

  • Hard drives sleep - not energy saver settings

I have two(2) different Quad 2.7 Pro Mac computers, both with 2 500GB Seagate drives mirror raided internally and Sonnet Fusion D500 SATA enclosures with 5 500GB seagates RAID striped.
They all fall asleep after inactivity, and it take several seconds for the drives to spin back up. The energy saver is set to never. I even tried turing it on, restarting, turing it off, reseting, but it did not help.
I've removed the internal RAID and the external still sleeps, and vice versa.
My only thought is it it the seagate drives. They are refurbished baracuda 7200.9 drives.
    Any ideas?

    hello,
i'm experiencing the same issue. i have 4 internal raptors in RAID0 and 4 external WD drives in a PM enclosure and have found that they too sleep as you mentioned.
i checked the energy saver and the box is unchecked to "put drives to sleep when possible" also...
i installed Leopard the other day when i got the new enclosure and external equipment - clean install - so i don't know if it would do the same in Tiger...
any suggestions, or is this normal for exterior storage - regardless if it is SATA or not?
