Computer won't sleep

My comp won't sleep and i think it is because of my monitor
Someone gave me a old apple cinema display
I think this is the monitor model Apple Studio Display 17 (ADC)
Also the usb ports in the back don't work
Is there a driver or firmware upgrade i need
It also may be my video card ATY,Rage128 pro

my computer would NEVER go to sleep on its own. I upgraded to Leopard and it seemed to take care of the problem. You might also try resetting your p-ram and v-ram.

  • Computer won't sleep on Energy Saver mode

All of a sudden, the computer will not sleep while on Energy Saver mode. Any ideas on how to locate the culprit?
    Thanks!

Hi, seb29. One possible culprit is a fax software setting: if the computer is set up to receive faxes, it either won't sleep at all or won't stay asleep for long. In the Print & Fax pane of System Prefs, click the Faxing tab and make sure "Receive faxes on this computer" is not checked.

  • Computer won't 'sleep' or screensaver activate

So, I finally just upgraded to Leopard last week. And seems that ever since I did that, my computer will not 'sleep' or the screen saver will not start according to my settings. It will just stay on if left for a long time w/ no screen saver, sleeping, etc.. any suggestions?

    Hi silentbry
Make sure you have the latest Firmware applied to your iMac. To find out use Software Update and follow the instructions there, if you find an available update.
    Delete the following files:
    Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/System Configuration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/System Configuration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
After that, create these files anew by configuring the Energy Saver System Preferences again.
If this didn't help, reboot your computer and reset the NVRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Hope this helps

  • My Computer Won't Sleep

I have my computer set to sleep if inactive for 30 minutes. Hours and days go by, and it will not automatically fall asleep. The display sleeps, but not the computer. This just happened recently. The only way it will sleep is if I close the screen, or if I manually put it to sleep. The automatic sleep feature is not working though.
Anyone able to help with this?

when the computer is restarted after trashing these files, it regenerates new copies. these are files that are known to be involved with the sleep process. sometimes they become corrupted and it is helpful to trash them and regenerate new copies. it resolves a lot of sleep-related issues.

  • HP Computer won't sleep when wrt54g connected

My HP Pavilion m9340f running Vista 64 bit will not enter a sleep mode on its own and wakes unexpectedly while connected to my wrt54g firmware version 4.21.1 10/17/2005.
If I disconnect the router and connect the computer directly to the cable modem, the sleep mode works fine. Does any one know of a way to fix this?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The problem was an advanced setting in the power plan I was using. The default for the balanced  and power saving plan is to "prevent idling to sleep" when sharing media and I had allowed media sharing on my pc.
I went to control panel  > power options > change plan settings > change advanced power settings > multmedia settings > when sharing media - and select allow the computer to sleep
I can restore default the settings when I actually am sharing media

  • Leopard on MDD-Display sleeps but computer won't sleep or wake-Need Help!

I installed Leopard on a 2nd internal drive and made it the boot drive. (I kept my 10.4.11 on the original internal drive.) Everything seems to run fine, but the machine will not go to sleep as told to do in System Prefs. The display sleeps, but the computer continues to run. (fans are on) It will not wake from this state. I have to power down and power up to get things going again.
I also have the 'Repair Permissions' issue.. Bar says about one minute but just sits there.
It's a MDD dual 1 gig, with 1.5 gig. mem.
Can anyone help figure this one out?
    John

I spent literally hours on the phone with Apple Support. We tried one thing after another with no success. We deleted com.apple files, one Pref. file after another, we unplugged one external device after another. It went on for about 4 hours or more. I finally couldn't stand it any more and we agreed to give up for the day.I did some more research on my own and heard rummers about PCI USB/Firewire cards sometimes causing problems. I had such a card installed. It was an old Orange Micro card. I removed the card and guess what.. Everything worked just fine. Why it worked with 10.4.11 and not 10.5.1, is beyond me, but there you have it. Oh yeah, I did also install the FULL download of the 10.5.1 upgrade. The Software Update version is a patch, the full download is much more.
Now I need to find a replacement PCI USB/Firewire card that runs with 10.5.1 Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Computer won't sleep, my monitor wakes up my computer

I recently purchaced at T232HL for my PC. It was working fine, now whenver my PC blanks the display or goes to sleep the monitor starts looking for another input then wakes the PC back up. The computer is plugged into HDMI1, when it goes to sleep the monitor tries HDMI2, VGA, then back to HDMI 1, then displays "No Signal", the amber light comes on briefly (0.5s) then the screen comes back on to my lockscreen with the PC wide awake. Using powercfg -lastwake I can see that a USB device woke up the computer. I tired unplugging each device 1 by 1 and found that when the USB to the monitor is unplugged it goes to sleep without issue (it still cycles inputs, but doesn't get woken up in the end). What's going on here? I don't think the monitor was cycling through input when I first started using it, and it certainly wasn't staying awake. Any hints on how to prevent auto input searching and preventing the monitor from waking up my PC? Thanks-Ian

    RidgePirate,
    Go to the device manager.
Right click and go to the properties of your display adapter.
Go the power management tab and see if there is an option to wake the computer from sleep.

  • Early 2008 MBP, replaced optical drive with SSD, now computer won't sleep.

So pretty much you know everything already, installed the operating system on the SSD everything works fine except the computer wont sleep.
    Any help wouldbe great
    thanks

I am about to do the same upgrade on MBP 13". Reading around the topic I think this problem is caused when the OS is running from the drive in the optical bay.
    See extract from following link:
    http://lifehacker.com/5541774/how-to-install-a-solid+state-drive-in-your-macbook
Update: It seems that connecting the SSD to the optical drive slot will give you problems waking from sleep, since the MacBook doesn't look to that SATA port for your main drive. I did not notice this before, as I don't sleep my computer. So, instead of installing your SSD in the Optibay, you'll want to disconnect your regular hard drive, install the SSD in that slot, and then install your old drive in the Optibay and continue as written.

  • Macbook Pro won't sleep after updating to 10.4.11

    Hi,
I just updated to 10.4.11 reluctantly from 10.4.9 as whenever I do update I always have issues...I basically just went to software update last week and updated to everything I could. I've just been reading the forums and noted that updating is not always that easy...
Well basically my computer won't sleep if the lid is left open, this is IMMENSELY annoying since I often leave my desk to work on drawings, and I don't want energy being wasted like it is at the minute. Call me picky but I just want my computer to work.
I've reseted the PRAM, (option, alt, p and r), closed all applications, etc, but no luck...
Its a 2.2ghz MacBook pro, 2GB. Thank you in advance
    Neal

The important thing for the future imho, is to always Repair Permissions before & after any update... seems to ward off most of these problems. Of course that is only good if the disk is Verified once in awhile.
Using Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later to verify or repair disks...

In fact I'd start with those 2 now, if that doesn't help you may need to reapply some updates by getting them directly from apple>downloads.

  • Macbook Pro won't sleep

I have this setup: a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion, an external 27" cinema display, a bluetooth apple keyboard and a bluetooth magic mouse.
The MacBook Pro runs with the lid closed.
It looks like the computer won't sleep anymore. It stays on for days when not using it. In my settings I have set I want the computer to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity.
I prefer to switch off the keyboard and mouse when I'm away from my computer, so I can't use the Apple menu or shortcuts to make the computer sleep.
    Any idea?

i am pretty sure this is because you have it connected to an external display.  i am not sure if there is a workaround for this.

  • Won't sleep

    Hello,
I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.11. Just had the HD replaced (original failed). All seems to be working fine, with one exception: the computer won't sleep according to the Energy Saver settings.
I have it set to display sleep after 3 minutes, HD sleep after 4 min. The display sleep works, but the HD sleep doesn't. I believe all was working prior to HD replacement.
The computer does sleep if I close the lid or command a sleep from the apple menu.
    Any thoughts?

Yes, I did search the boards. Most people seem to experience trouble getting the computer to sleep when the close the screen, or w/ intermittent sleep. I didn't see anyone else w/ the particular problem I'm having.
I had thought I might trash the system preferences preferences (systempreferences.plist), but I'm not sure what other carnage that will unleash...

  • Macbook Pro late 2008 17inch won't sleep or wake up

Recently I inset a SSD as a primary disk for the system and the original hard drive for storage. The system was upgraded to Marvericks 10.9.2. The computer is Macbook Pro 17 inches Late 2008 edition, A1229.
When I close the lid, the computer won't sleep. I tried to close lid under safe mode. It works fine. However, even if all the programs are closed, the computer won't sleep when the lid is closed. I tried to change the settings for power saver and bluetooth. It doesn't help.
There are so many people experiencing the same problem. I can't believe there is still no solution. PLEASE HELP.

I have tried to imput "pmset -g" in the terminal. The output was
sleep                10 (sleep prevented by UserEventAgent, mds, backupd, backupd)

  • Macbook fan keeps running, won't sleep or hibernate

So here's the deal, my macbook (late 2008 aluminum) fan is always running loudly, from 4500-6000 rpm, and the temperature stays around 80ºF even if the computer is idling. I have to shut it off for the fan to turn off. When I close the lid, the screen shuts off, but the computer won't sleep, even if I choose sleep from the apple menu. I tried unplugging the power and letting the screen turn off, thinking it would hibernate, but it will not hibernate either. I made sure there is no dust in vents or anything, tried SMC reset, installed latest software, am running SMC fan control, nothing seems to be working. I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.3. and my activity monitor shows no unusual activity. It does feel hot, so I don't think the heat sensor is off, it is just heating up and won't cool down. Could the fan be running poorly and not cooling properly? Please help.

There's a log in Event Viewer. It might have the issue logged.
Does uninstalling the Power Management driver and reinstalling v1.62 help?

  • Computer does not sleep when lid is closed

    Hey everyone,
Until about 15 minutes ago I had my powerbook G4 set to sleep whenever I closed the lid. Well, now it does not want to.
I installed a screensaver and used it for a little bit, and now uninstalled it.
The problem is, ever since installing and selecting that screensaver my computer won't sleep when I close the lid.
What is the process to restore this and get it so that it sleeps when I close the lid?
    Thanks in advance!
