Computer won't start after adding RAM

I just tried added a two gig stick of ram to my MBP but it would not turn on when it was installed. The power would come on the screen would stay black and the led would stay on solid white. The ram is of like type, and works in another MBP without a problem. The 2 gig stick also works in my computer by itself, just not with my original 1 gig stick. Any idea why this is happening?
thanks
MBP 2.16 GHz intel duo   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

The levers are for ejecting the old memory, not reseating the new memory. You have to push quite firmly to seat the new memory. Push evenly with both thumbs, one on each outer corner.

    Hi,
RAM sticks are not the same even same size, same specs. Can machine get back to normal with old RAM ? Please try the following RAM, they guarantee their RAM will work:

  • Computer won't start after power outage

After a circuit breaker was shut off the computer won't start. I cleaned out the computer and got the light to go green by putting a hair dryer to it.
When I push start button and hold it up to 10 seconds it will not start.
The computer is a compaq presario sr5130nx

Typically what happens during a power outage is not good.  It can do strange things.  If it took using a hair dryer to get the green light on the back to come on, that is a bad sign.  HERE is a troubleshooting guide for power supplies.  Start with that.

  • MacBook Pro won't start after changing RAM cards; just beeps.

MacBook Pro will not start after changing RAM cards.  It just beeps; then I force it to quit.

The three things that come to mind immediately are that the RAM card isn't seated properly (you should hear or feel a click when it is seated), the RAM is bad or marginal for that Mac model, or you didn't get the correct RAM type.

  • U 160 won't start after changing Ram from 4 to 8 Gig

    Hey community,
I just installed two brand new DDR3-RAM 1066 MHz 7-7-7-20 204pin SO-DIMM Corsair modules to enhance my U160 a little bit. It runs a Win 7 Home Pro 64 and already was upgraded with a Samsung 250 Gig SSD.
The BIOS shows the RAM correctly but no matter if I try to boot normal or in save mode, the laptop reboots after the windows colours appear during start. "Last known version" also does not help, neither letting it start via a bootalble pen of which I further installed this Windows version. Because there is no blue or black screen I guess it is not a physical prob but a win prob.
    Anybody an idea?
    Thanks in advance,
    Baschdel

Nope, according to the German Lenovo board it accepts 8 Gig of RAM (use google translator):

I tried ubuntu but does not even load the data of the stick. I will try your hint with memtest now, looks like it really could be a prob with the RAM. By the way, it is 2x4 Gig Corsair Value Select.
Edit:  I just checked the big onlineseller with the "a" and about 30% of the reviewers have incompatibility. I tried a different ubuntu and it loads about 20 seconds before it shuts down the computer. With the old RAM it works just fine so I guess I won't have to check via memtest and can declare that modules as falty.

  • Computer won't start after lightning storm, makes beeping noise

After a surprise lightning storm the other night I noticed my computer was making a weird noise. I shut it off and unplugged it for a minute or so. Now, when I try to turn it back on I hear the familiar startup chime, then the screen turns white and in about one second this same noise starts: beep, beep, beep in groups of 3 like a back up warning sound on a truck. I can't get any further than this. I've tried pushing the button to shut down and restart, held the button for several seconds, and also tried the keyboard keys for a forcequit. Can't think of anything else to do to get past the beeps and try to turn the computer on. (iMac intel with Mtn. Lion upgrade) Other computers and equipment in my house do not seem to have been affected, but the power did go off for about a minute and we had to reset some clocks.
Has anyone heard this noise before? It doesn't sound friendly!

    Hello,
Sounds like the RAM went bad...
The following table lists the new tones and their meaning:
    Tone(s)    Description
1 tone, a 5-second pause, repeat    No RAM installed
3 successive tones, a 5-second pause, 3 successive tones    RAM does not pass data integrity check
1 long tone when holding down the power button    Firmware upgrade in process. See About firmware updates for Intel-based Macs for more details.
3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones    Firmware restoration from CD in process. See About the Firmware Restoration CD (Intel-based Macs) for more details.

  • EMac won't start after replacing RAM

    I bought a 512mb ram to install it, so it'll be 768mb.
I stupidly took out the original RAM first before installing both RAM. The ejector tab just wouldnt fit in snugly to the side of the ram.
After starting up the emac, i get a "toot" sound and two flashes, the flashes repeats after a few seconds.
I'm not sure whether it's because the RAM did't fit in properly or whether i fried something.
    I appreciate any help.
Sorry if my english sounds weird, it's not my first language.

In addition to roam's usual excellent advice, make sure you have the right RAM for your model eMac. You can use eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model to check the model, use Crucial to check the required RAM specs, and eMac - Do-It-Yourself to review the installation steps (the movie links usually seem ike overkill but could be handy here).
You can also refer to Power On Self-Test Beep Definition.

  • IS there a way of disabling or removing an addon from outside of FF (It won't start after adding an addon)

I installed an addon and now FF will not start and appears to be looping. Is there a way to uninstall the addon or set up FF so that it starts with addons disabled? Remember that FF is not running at all so I do not have access to any of the internal functions.
FF release is 17.0.1, on Windiows XP/SP3
Also, once I do that I would like to have the addon added to the block list.

The home page '''''about:home''''' is built in to Firefox and should/would not be affected.
Though it should/would not affect '''''about:home''''', there is an entry for Mozilla on their list, if you are using some page at mozilla as your home page. On my installation that item on their list is shown as disabled; I do not recall disabling that item myself, therefore it could be their default (disabled) and they know that item is not functioning properly on their list.
You may be correct in that there could be a conflict with another add-on. The only way to determine that is to experiment by installing '''''HTTPS Everywhere''''', disabling/enabling a few extensions (or plugins), restart Firefox and repeat until you find the conflicting item.

The only other thing that comes to mind is a possible corruption of '''''HTTPS Everywhere''''' during download/installation.
Post back once you locate a solution yourself, if it is a conflict with another add-on, or once you hear back from Electronic Frontier Foundation with a solution from them.

  • 2009 Mac Pro Won't Boot after adding RAM (Crash-Keeps rebooting)

So I recently added new RAM that I purchased from OWC into my Mac Pro 4,1. It kept rebooting over and over and it gives me this error screen when it does. It doesn't get past the boot screen. I've since removed the RAM and replaced it with my old sticks (I discovered that the new sticks were the wrong speed 1333MHz vs 1066MHz). Still nothing.
This is incredibly urgent. Does anyone have any insight?

The hexadecimal stuff all over the screen is NOT a RAM panic. It is complaining about a USB problem and a caldigit driver.
The box near the center of the screen is saying you have the modules installed in the wrong slots.
Take it slow and simple. Install one module in the lowest-numbered slot on each side and work your way up on the RAM modules. You want to end up with the biggest modules in the lowest-numberd slots.
Remove all your USB devices for now to avoid that kernel panic.

  • Mac Pro 2010 Won't boot after adding Ram

Just got my Mac Pro 2.8 a few days ago. My 4x2 8Gig Crucial Ram upgrade arrived today along with my SIIG FireWire400 PCIe card. It seems as though the Mac Pro won't boot with both the Crucial Ram and the Samsung Ram that came stock with the Mac Pro. I kept 2 of the 1 gig Samsung chips and put in the 2 4Gig Chips from Crucial. They are all the DDR3 1066 240 pin chips. I've moved the 4Gig chips to slots 1 & 2 and I've tried them in slots 3 & 4. I've moved the 1Gig Samsung chips accordingly. The power light on the Mac Pro blinks continuously when they are both installed. I even tried removing the new SIIG FireWire 400 card but that doesn't change anything. It seems as though combining these two types of ram just doesn't jive. Any ideas? I'm dragging the tower from queens to SoHo tomorrow to let the Apple Genius gang have a look at it.

FYI, when I did install the Registered or "buffered" 8 Gigs of Crucial Ram by themselves the system did boot up normally and a memory notification popped up and said that my ram was in the "correct" or "suggested" configuration. I can't remember the exact phrasing but the OS definitely gave me a thumbs up. So now I am trolling the web trying to find out if the Registered memory is ok. I'm fine to just have 8gigs for now. But don't want to jeopardize the stability of my system. So, Is it ok to use Registered memory and if it is, am I using a lesser quality of ram in doing so?

  • Computer won't start after updating

I recently tried to updated my 2006 Mac Mini with Snow Leopard 10.6 and a screen popped up saying there was an issue and that the computer needed to restart. When it restarted the screen was a white loading screen with an apple, but now it won't move from that screen. I also can't get the disc out of the computer because it won't go to the desktop screen. I don't know what to do or how to fix it.

  • My computer won't start up after i tried to install updates

last night my computer told me there were 5 new updates available and i tried to install them, and my computer froze so i manually turned it off. now my computer won't start up. i get to the gray screen with the apple and the circular icon that swirls around which makes you think it's doing something but nothing happens. in the hopes that my computer was loading the updates, i let it run all night, and 8 hours later it was still doing the same thing. now my computer won't start at all, and i know there's power to it.
    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    chiae:
am i looking for the Leopard installer or the disc that came with my Powerbook all those years ago?
You are looking for the installer disk for the system which is currently installed on your computer, which is Leopard according to your profile.
Will doing these steps erase my hard drive?
No. Running Repair Disk will not in any way affect your data or any contents of your HDD. However, if there are serious directory issues your data might be jeopardized even without running Repair Disk.
Your question suggests that you may not have an up-to-date backup, if any backup at all. That is one of the most dangerous things you can do. I suggest that you take steps to secure your data even before you do much more. If you need ideas on how best to accomplish this, please post back and ask.
While you are waiting to locate your install disk, here is something you can do right now, and it will not in any way endanger the contents of your HDD:
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously later.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after the startup chime.
    • Hold keys down until you hear the startup chime for the third time.
    • Release the keys and immediately hold down Shift key to start up in Safe Mode.
    • Log in and empty Trash.
    • Restart normally and log in.
Please do post back with an update or with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Computer won't start up after changing permissions.

I accidentally changed the permissions for all of the files on my hard drive. Now, Leopard won't start up. And to top it all off I conveniently can not find my Leopard disk. I did, however, locate my Tiger disk but the computer won't start from the CD drive either.
I also thought that I could install Tiger on an external Hard Drive using my sisters computer but Tiger would not install on the USB Hard Drive because it said Mac OS X could not start from the external hard drive.
It won't start up in "Safe Mode (holding the SHIFT key)".
    Anybody have any suggestions?

You can, in addition to Barry's excellent suggestions, reset the SMU.
