Computer won't start after power outage

After a circuit breaker was shut off the computer won't start. I cleaned out the computer and got the light to go green by putting a hair dryer to it.
When I push start button and hold it up to 10 seconds it will not start.
The computer is a compaq presario sr5130nx

Typically what happens during a power outage is not good.  It can do strange things.  If it took using a hair dryer to get the green light on the back to come on, that is a bad sign.  HERE is a troubleshooting guide for power supplies.  Start with that.

  • IMac won't boot after power outage

I got a power outage a couple of hours ago. And now my iMac won't boot. When I power it up, it gets pass the white screen with the apple logo. The screen than turns blue with a spinning cursor. The cursor spins for about 10-15 minutes and stops but the normal login screen never appear and it won't boot into the desktop either. I just got a blue screen.
I have boot into the install Disc1 and did the disk repair and premission repair but it didn't help.
    Any idea?

    Oh man, what a disaster!
I tried to do an Archive and Install but the installation hanged at the end of disc 2 after running an iWeb script (according to the install log) with about one minute left. I have waited for two hours but it just hanged there with all the drives spin down.
To make the problem worse. There was no way to quit the install at that point because all the menu items were disabled. The only way out was to power off. But when I powered it back on, it booted right into install directly asking for the disc 2. If I put the disc in it will install again and hang at the same spot.
Disc 2 contains iLife. I know Apple wanted to make things simple but why can't they give me an option to skip it? After all, iLife was already installed.
I finally got it working by booting from disc 1 and did a clean install. It took me all night to re-download all the updates and reinstall many applications. Fortunately, I have my address book, calendar, and most of my works backed up to .Mac so it wasn't a total lost.
On the bright side. Now my iMac is working better than before. I used to have problem getting auto sleep to work but now it works perfectly. Safari also had problem accessing charts (but Camino was fine) in a few web sites like schwab.com. Now everything works.
Lenn and David. Thanks for all your helps.
Now I am looking for a better backup solution so that the recovery won't be this painful if disaster strikes again. Any suggestions?

  • MacMini PPC not starting after power outage

MacMini PPC running Leopard - plugged into a UPS & power strip with a surge protector - it was running last night when the power went out in our area - this morning it won't boot up - get the chime the Apple logo & the spinning clock - can hear the usual startup sounds but a few seconds later it shuts down - inserted the install disk & held the option key - it showed the internal harddrive (with a blue X), the external harddrive with the SuperDuper backup (with a blue X), the install CD (with a blue X) & the Apple Hardware Test, although the mouse works the pointer remains a clock & after a few seconds it shuts down - any ideas or suggestions ? - the Mini acts as our wifi source so am off line except for the iPhone

I take it that the power outage was long enough to deplete the UPS and that the Mini therefore had its power pulled abruptly when the UPS ran out of juice?
Since you have a PPC Mini, you can try a PMU reset. (This is only PPC Minis; don't use it if you have an Intel Mini. Intels get the SMC reset.)

  • Mac mini won't boot after power outage

I have a Mac Mini Server which runs all the time in my house. We had a power outage a couple fo days ago but I didn't happen to check the mac mini until today. I found it at the login screen, and proceeded to log in. Everything was slow and taking way too long. Finally it froze. I restarted, but this time I got to a grey screen with a progress bar (no progress shown).
At this point one of two things happens - either it switches to a spinning wheel forever, or it just shuts itself off. I've restarted many times and it seems to randomly choose one of those outcomes. I tried resetting the SMC by unplugging, waiting, and then plugging it back in, but this had no effect. I want to reset the PRAM, but it doesn't seem to work, although that might be because my keyboard is not an Apple keyboard. I'm trying to get another ekyboard to try, but besides resetting the PRAM, does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Try booting to the OSX disk that came with the Mini
and run disk utility and try Repair Disk on the boot drive.
Also, if you have a bootable clone, try that.
If you have another Mac, another thing to try is
getting the Mini to start in Target Disk mode and connect
via Firewire to the other Mac and try a repair disk that way.

We suffered a 2 hour power outage and upon power restoration I had a corrupted memory strip. replaced memory and cannot start Hyper-V manager due to lost mmc file or does not exist. virtual machines are running fine I just can't manage or create any additional.
This is on win server 2012.
    Anybody....Please Help!!!@!@!

    Try:
    Add-WindowsFeature -Name Hyper-V-Tools
This installs the Hyper-V Manager GUI tool only.
If that does not repair it, try:
    Remove-WindowsFeature -Name Hyper-V-Tools

  • Mac Mini wont start after power outage, and problem copying iPhoto library. HELP!

So, recently there was a power outage in my neighborhood, the power was intermitent for about 2 hours, during this time my mac rebooted itself several times, but on the second time it rebooted the power went out during boot, then the power finally went out for good, it was back in about 3 hours, but when i finnaly turned on my mac it got stuck at the Apple logo with a spinning wheel and a progress bar that wouldnt go past 40%, when i boot holding command -v it said that there were a lot of errors which were automatically fixed, except for one, "Incorrect Thread records" or something like that.
I have another partition with Mountain Lion installed for emergencies, the other one with Lion became inaccessible to mountain lion or any other OS X version, but oddly enough, I can access my Lion partition via HFSexplorer and see all my files untouched.
My main concern are my pictures in iPhoto, and thats about 36Gb of data, I want to backup them to my windows pc by copying the whole iPhoto library package, but HFSexplores for some reason cant copy the folders with date (XX/XX/XXXX) with the /, and it keeps changing them to XX_XX_XXXX and I know that would pretty much break my iPhoto library!
I googled my drive problem and people said that I need a Disk Utility called DiskWarrior, but I cant seem to find how to to use it, I got a copy from a friend, it was the digital version of the boot disk which need to be burned to a dvd.
Any help would be appreciated, and sorry for the bad english

OK, we need more info about your Mac. Do you know how much RAM it has in it?
If you don't know the model, find the Serial# & use it on one of these sites, but don't post the Serial# here...

  • Computer won't start after lightning storm, makes beeping noise

After a surprise lightning storm the other night I noticed my computer was making a weird noise. I shut it off and unplugged it for a minute or so. Now, when I try to turn it back on I hear the familiar startup chime, then the screen turns white and in about one second this same noise starts: beep, beep, beep in groups of 3 like a back up warning sound on a truck. I can't get any further than this. I've tried pushing the button to shut down and restart, held the button for several seconds, and also tried the keyboard keys for a forcequit. Can't think of anything else to do to get past the beeps and try to turn the computer on. (iMac intel with Mtn. Lion upgrade) Other computers and equipment in my house do not seem to have been affected, but the power did go off for about a minute and we had to reset some clocks.
Has anyone heard this noise before? It doesn't sound friendly!

    Hello,
Sounds like the RAM went bad...
The following table lists the new tones and their meaning:
    Tone(s)    Description
1 tone, a 5-second pause, repeat    No RAM installed
3 successive tones, a 5-second pause, 3 successive tones    RAM does not pass data integrity check
1 long tone when holding down the power button    Firmware upgrade in process. See About firmware updates for Intel-based Macs for more details.
3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones    Firmware restoration from CD in process. See About the Firmware Restoration CD (Intel-based Macs) for more details.

  • Computer won't start by power button only; requires extra reset button push

I have a PowerMac G4 AGP, 400 with 1.5 ram, OS 9.2.2. For some time now I have not been able to start the computer by pushing the power button on the keyboard. To start the computer I can push either the power button on the keyboard or front of the computer, then I have to push the reset button on the front of the computer.
Now I need to do a firmware upgrade and I need the computer to start from the power button alone. I've zapped the PRAM, but haven't opened up the computer to start resetting PMU and changing the battery. Can any of you computer docs give me a diagnosis?

It' possible that the battery is weak. Have you ever changed it. See Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial
This link tells what firmware version you need for OS X. You need version 4.28 (Boot ROM version in Apple System Profiler) Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
You need to install the firmware using OS 9 BEFORE you install OS X.

  • Hyper-V Host displays error "Automatic Reapir Failed" and will not start after Power Outage

I have a single Dell PowerEdge configured as a Hyper-V host running Wink12 R2 Preview as a Native Boot VHD and hosting about a dozen VM's. We had a break in the power, just a lights on lights off, but it was enough to shut the machine down and trigger restart.
But the machine won't restart--instead it displays a message "Automatic repair Failed" and none of the Advanced repair options work to get the host back online.
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
    Michael J. Murphy

    Hi MJMurphy,
Sorry for the delay , it seems likely a disk problem cause of unexpect interrupt .
Please boot the host from OS ISO and  try to copy the VMs' VHD files and any important data to a safe place (such as external USB)via command prompt mode  .
(perhaps you need to prepare raid driver if you have a raid controler  )
Using diskpart --> list volume to check the status of disk partion or you can contact the hardware vendor to check it .
    Hope this helps

  • Computer won't start after adding RAM

I just tried added a two gig stick of ram to my MBP but it would not turn on when it was installed. The power would come on the screen would stay black and the led would stay on solid white. The ram is of like type, and works in another MBP without a problem. The 2 gig stick also works in my computer by itself, just not with my original 1 gig stick. Any idea why this is happening?
    thanks

The levers are for ejecting the old memory, not reseating the new memory. You have to push quite firmly to seat the new memory. Push evenly with both thumbs, one on each outer corner.

  • Computer won't start after updating

I recently tried to updated my 2006 Mac Mini with Snow Leopard 10.6 and a screen popped up saying there was an issue and that the computer needed to restart. When it restarted the screen was a white loading screen with an apple, but now it won't move from that screen. I also can't get the disc out of the computer because it won't go to the desktop screen. I don't know what to do or how to fix it.

  • Computer won't start up after power outage....

We just had a power outage when our computer was on and now that our power is back, the computer won't start up. (I'm typing this on our power book!) I hold in the button on the back, get the "bong" and then the computer whirs for a while with a black screen and then just dies. What to do??

You can, in addition to Barry's excellent suggestions, reset the SMU.

  • HELP! Battery drained and now, even with a power plug, computer won't start

My battery drained completely...and I went to charge it. When I plug the power cord in, it shows "green" not "red." When I remove the battery and just plug in the power cord, the computer won't start either.
Anyone encounter this before after a full battery drain? It's very odd.

I had the same green light non-charging problem. Turns out, I had to replace my wall adaptor. A dealer will have a good power supply you can try.
