Computer won't start - please help.
Just about a week ago, I got my computer back from being fixed (with Applecare) of the vertical lines.
Now, it's running fine today, and then it just dies. Now it won't start.
I press the power button, the screen flashes just a little, very quickly. And then CD Drive makes a sound like it's searching for a CD.
And then nothing.
It won't do this again until I hold down the power button for a while, then try again, then it happens again.
After it's "started," it doesn't make any sounds/noises from the volume buttons or anything, so I don't think it's a monitor thing, and I don't have a monitor where I am right now that I can connect it to.
Any ideas?
Eric,
Do you have a firewire bootable external disk? Or how about a bootable CD, like the restore disk that came with your PowerBook? If you can start up from one of these disks, then it is likely your hard disk. If it doesn't start with one of those, it may be your logic board.
Are you sure it wasn't a dead battery?
Maybe it needs another trip to AppleCare. If it is still active, it sure would be the least expensive thing to do!
If the frustration is too much, and you have to replace a powerbook, the MacBookPro is an awesome replacement!

Can't Update to 10.0.1, Bonjour Service Won't Start--PLEASE help!
All I want to do is update my iTunes but I cannot. It won't work from within iTunes, and when I try to do it manually it said "The Service Bonjour Service" won't start." In Services, I could not start it either, though I am admin.
So I deleted Bonjour (from within the Control Panel), thinking that'd take care of it, but it did not. I still get ALL the same messages. I even tried re-installing Bonjour (bonjour64.msi), and I get the same "won't start" message. It's not my firewall--I set that to always allow.
What is going on here? I've searched and searched, but to no avail (though they are plenty of Bonjour problems out there), and I really don't want to uninstall/reinstall iTunes, if that would even do it. I'm new to Apple, and this just makes no sense to me.
Please, help?? THANKS in advance~There are remants of Bonjour in the program files, and I guess I could delete these to clean it up, but I doubt that would make the difference.
Actually, that could make a difference. If there is leftover componentry from the previous version still on the PC when the new version tries to install, the version mismatch could cause trouble with the new service starting. That could then roll back the attempted install.
There's a bunch of different stuff on 64-bit systems for BonJour (there's both 64-bit and 32-bit componentry stashed on a 64-bit system. We'll also try a cleaner version of an uninstall than the Apple instructions provide.
In Computer, open your C drive (or whichever drive your program files are installed on).
Open the "Program Files" folder.
Right-click on the "BonJour" folder (if it still exists) and select "Delete".
Go back into your C drive (or whichever drive your program files are installed on).
Open the "Program Files (x86)" folder.
Right-click on the "BonJour" folder (if it still exists) and select "Delete".
Go back into your C drive (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
Open the "Windows" folder.
Open the "System32" folder.
Right-click on the dnssd.dll and dns-sd.exe files (if they still exist), and select "Delete".
Go back into the "Windows" folder.
Open the "SysWOW64" folder.
Right-click on the dnssd.dll and dns-sd.exe files (if they still exist), and select "Delete".
Empty your recycle bin.
Restart the PC and try another BonJour install. Any better luck restarting the service this time? -
Help my IPOD won't start PLEASE HELP
It gives me the apple screen and then switches into the foloer with an exclamation point and i don't know how to get it out. I have tried restarting, and plugging it into the computer doesn't do anything. It is charged, please help.
Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

Advance Level
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
Last Resort Level
1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote -

Mac Pro won't start; please help!!
Had Mac Pro for 6 months. All was going well until today. Then I noticed my Mail application was not sounding a chime when mail came in. I repaired permissions and re-started my computer.
Only it did not re-start. I got no start-up chime and after the grey screen appeard, after about 15 seconds a dark blanket transition goes down the screen and a message comes up in several laungauges, English being:
"You must re-start your computer. Either hold down the power button for 8 seconds or press the restart button".
I held the power button in for 8 seconds, then turned it back on again, same thing...
I reset the SMC/Pram thing (whatever it is called) by doing it both ways i.e. unplugging every cable, then plugging in just power/keyboard/mouse, the other way was pressing the switch inside the machine; nothing.
My machine won't start up.

Setup Assistant won't start - Please help!
Please help!!
I just got access to ebooks from my library and I downloaded the Adobe Digital Edition software and it won't work. I don't get any error messages and all it does is bring up the program and it's a black screen. I don't get prompted for the setup assistant so I know the installation is not fully complete but nothing further happens. This is really bumming me out since I was super excited about reading free books and now I'm stuck with no where to go. Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated!!!It's possible to download ADE without setting up an account with Adobe, but
ADE has to be registered to you in order to work. Blank screens tell me that
you might not have done this, so the first question is whether you obtained
an Adobe ID before you did the download. If not, and you're using a Windows
PC, use 'Add/Remove Programs' from the Control Panel to remove Digital
Editions from your computer, then go to Adobe.com and set up an account.
After that's done, download ADE again, and it 'should' work.
OTOH, if you set up an account with Adobe before you downloaded ADE, then
something's not right with the download. You can contact Adobe for help in
this instance.
Hope this helps!

My iMac G5 won't start - please help?
I don't get a chance to get near it very often, but my wife & kids say it has been really slow recently and particularly getting stuck in Microsoft Word. Then it froze. Now it won't start-up - get to the grey screen & the apple logo and the pin-wheel below goes round & round but nothing further happens. Then the fan starts spinning really loudly (indefinitely) so I switch it off & try again - same outcome. I have reset the SMU & PRAM, and run disk utility (says hardware all fine), but couldn't get it to archive & install.
Worst of all, I haven't backed up photos & quite a lot of work for some months
Any advice gratefully received>
WillWelcome Will - try putting it in Target Disk Mode and see if you can pull the data off that way. Use Disk Utility from the Host machine to repair your drive, or if you can get hold of DiskWarior or TechtoolPro, use one of them to repair the machine. It does sound, though, as if your power supply unit is failing which, being a hardware problem, nothing can fix except replacing it (and likely the logic board).

6233 won't start - please help!
Hi everyone, I know this thread isn't 100% relevant to the European boards, but I can't find equivalent boards for the USA or Asia, and unfortunately, even though I now live in the USA, my phone was purchased overseas. I've had a 6233 for 6 months, and I upgraded from FW 3.70 to 4.91 last week. Yesterday, I was copying an mp3 file from the SD card to the phone memory, and it crashed. Im sure that the MP3 file in question was smaller than the available phone memory. Now, each time I try to boot the phone, the screen lights up blank white for about 4 seconds, and then just shuts off again. I simply cannot get it to boot up. I've tried with/without SIM cards, with different batteries, and with/without the SD card. I bought this phone in mainland China but I'm now in the USA. Nokia USA said they absolutely refuse to help me repair the phone, and I have to return it to where it was purchased. (They were really rude, too)
Can anyone give me some suggestions? I bet the problem will be solved if I just re-flash the FW, but I don't know where I can do that, short of mailing it back to China, but that would take forever and the phone might be lost/stolen in the process... Is there anything I can do to try to solve this problem myself?? Please help!!

12:20 PMDid you tried NSU (http://europe.nokia.com/A4176089?6233)?
It looks like firmware need to be reinstalled...
Hard to help.. for example S60 smartphones you can format (*#7370# or by holding down 3 * green whilst switching it on)... But N6233 is not smartphone...
So.. try to update firmware with Nokia Software Updater or try to reflash it on nearest Nokia service center.

Ipod 80Gb - 5 R's haven't worked, computer won't recognise, please help.
Hey there kindly folk,
I've read through posts on this and other sites and tried what feels like hours worth of solutions but I'm at my wits end. Here's the details, hope someone can help.
1) Have 80GB classic Ipod.
2) All has been working fine for months ...
3) Recently plugged it in to sync and Windows Vista popped up a screen saying something like 'drive is corrupted' and asked me if I wanted to repair it. I said yes, nothing much happened.
4) Since then, neither Itunes, nor my computer, will recognise my ipod.
5) Have checked device manager, it's not there. Even after multiple resets and switching to other USB ports.
6) Have tried the '5 R's' with no success.
7) Have updated all vista and itunes software. No success.
7) Have tried putting it into disk mode. Got it into disk mode but computer still wouldn't recognise it.
8) Now the battery has drained and it won't charge. When I try to reset the ipod it's screen shows a yellow ! point and says 'connect to power'. As the computer doesn't seem to recognise it exists, it won't power up. Have left it plugged in for hours, with no success.
So, I guess the question is - what now? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers!Have you got an AC power adapter? They used to be shipped with ipod, and I still got mine from the 3rd gen one.
You DO need that to fully recharge ipod. An apple store will either sell you one or even perhaps charge it for you.
Should they exchange it, the IFRST thing, you must do is plug into the AC charger, PRIOR to connecting it to computer. For some reason, apple do recommend a FULL AC charge first.
Good luck -

So you are running Safari Beta 3.?? now,
SafariStand, Concierge and BookDog.
Many third party safari add on are not compatible w/ Safari 3, the
developers need to update, I am not sure if the 3 you mention are including but the behaviour of S 3 points to that there maybe an issue with them.
What I wish I could do is uninstall Safari and reinstall the latest non-beta version, which I assume is 2.0.4. But I can't find the 2.0.4 version as a stand alone program, much less an uninstaller program just for Safari. All I can find is the 3.0 beta and a 2.0.1 updater. Doesn't Apple realize that sometime Mac users need to simply reinstall one piece of software. Now I know it's probably on my Tiger install disk but that's going to take me back several versions and I have to wonder how easy that will be to upgrade.
James- The way you get Safari 2.0.4 back is to run the Uninstaller that came, with the Safari 3 beta download, that will revert your copy of Safari back to 2.0.4.
Do not use your mac when the installer is running if you decide to uninstall Beta,
If this doesn't help please post a new topic in the Safari 3 for mac forum this is the regular Safari forum.
Good luck, keep us posted.

HELP PLEASE!!! Computer won't start up
Help Please!
My computer won't start up, when I click the start up button the light comes only once, sounds click (once) and that's it, no power up.
Because of the age, I knew that the battery could be the reason, so I ordered the exact same battery and replaced it today (following the instructions very carefully). Nothing changed. Then I read about the button for resetting the power management (the one below the ram memory), did that too...and nothing.
I read the manual, it talks about recently installed components (which I have not) and explains the meaning of the numbers of blinks the power light makes with this type of failure, 2 blinks=ram memory, 3 blinks...4 blinks..more than 5 blinks= take it to service.
If somebody could please help me, I would really appreciate
All the best,
VeronicaI had similar problems with my G5 2ghz dual PPC. Mine would turn on, sometimes the startup chime would sound, sometimes not. The fans would run and continue to run faster and faster until I shut it off.
The red light comes on by the way, when the internal plastic shield is not installed or seated correctly.
Anyway, I determined after fooling with the machine for several hours that the symptoms pointed to the video card so, on a hunch, I grabbed a hair drier, pulled the video card and warmed up the video card with the drier. Then reinstalled the video card, hooked up the monitor and hit the power button. Bingo, the machine booted normally. BUT, it would intermittently hang or act odd while running so, I ordered a replacement video card. Installed it and the problem never returned. Sadly someone stole the machine last month but it was in perfect working order at the time:( -
Help, computer won't start up
Help, my computer won't start-up now. I downloaded one of those free .swf converter softwares from the net and now I think in the restart process, which should've completed the download like it said, instead it's like I don't have any OS on my computer anymore. And if that doesn't make things worse I was trying to reinstall OS X and it wants to go the net to do that but when i try to it asked my to login to the apple store with the ID i purshased it with and I didn't buy it I downloaded it from a P2P site, so of course the apple store tells me when i login to login with the ID I bought it with so now what, I don't want to lose my file's what should I do anybody got any suggestion. This is what I tried so far.
When it starts up I see the OS X Utilities window
I clicked the the Disk Utility, and clicked my HD and clicked repair.
When it was done it said
The volume appears to be ok.
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Now what, also I did it again after I held CMD + R
Still when I start up I don't see my hard drive just the OS X Utilities window.
Also when I downloaded the OS X 10.8.5 I saved it on an external but its plugged to my only computer and thats the one I'm having the trouble with, sorry about all the miss spelled words if you can read this and help please do...Try booting from your system CD, run Disk First Aid from your Disk Utility and repair your permissions.

HELP! Battery drained and now, even with a power plug, computer won't start
My battery drained completely...and I went to charge it. When I plug the power cord in, it shows "green" not "red." When I remove the battery and just plug in the power cord, the computer won't start either.
Anyone encounter this before after a full battery drain? It's very odd.I had the same green light non-charging problem. Turns out, I had to replace my wall adaptor. A dealer will have a good power supply you can try.
