Computer won't stay turned off

Hello,
I have a wierd problem with Arch linux. Doing "shutdown -h now" only gets me to a "power off" message then I have to manually turn off the computer--then after the computer is off for 5-10 minutes it turns back on.  I have to actually unplug it to keep it off.
I am using a custom compiled 2.6.5 kernel with a Dell dimension v400 pentium II.  The same problem happened when I installed arch with 2.4 kernel--yet it hasn't happened with any other distro that I have tried with this hardware (redhat, gentoo, vector, debian) what is the problem??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-Dustin

Adding this to grub:
(hd0,0)/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/di ............ acpi=on acpi=power-off
did not work..
I recompiled the Kernel with no acpi support and now the computer will stay off (don't need to unplug it anymore), but I still have to press the power button to shut it off (no big deal).  Also I was having a problem where the network card would not work after a soft reboot, now it does
thanks for the help

  • M92p won't stay turned off

Just got a brand new M92p here which will not stay turned off. I perform a regular shutdown in Windows, the system turns off for about a second or two, then turns on again automatically and boots into Windows. I turned off all the Wake features except WOL and also disabled Intel AMT. Bios is also set to stay turned off after a power loss.
Any ideas what's going on here?

Well, I don't really know exactly what the problem is for you that's waking up your M92p's.  I'm only responding to your comment that you seem to have narrowed it down to those machines which make use of a USB cable connecting the M92p to the Samsung monitor, which has a built-in USB hub.
And the USB hub entries in Device Manager do have a "power management" tab that does have a checkbox that says "allow this device to wake the compurter".  So it seemed worth looking at.
It may well be that the "allow this device to wake the computer" is already UN-CHECKED in the power management tab, and in fact I believe it's the Windows default setting for that checkbox.  So it's likely that this particular possibile explanation for some way that your Samsung monitors might have been responsible for your M92p's mysteriously waking up, and an easy thing to try with a simple un-check of the option, turns out to be a dead end.  But it still seems worth looking into as a possibility.  Can't hurt.
And if it turns out that you DO actually have to un-check this option (which for some reason has gotten checked) in all of your machines that use this particular Samsung monitor with the USB cable connection as that DOES fix the problem of all the M92p's waking up unexpectedly, well... that's life in IT I guess.

  • LG Ally It won't stay turned off and texting.

I just bought two Allys. The one I gave my son will stay turned off until he decides to turn it on.  Also, while it is charging, his screen goes into sleep mode.  The one I have will not stay turned off.  If it is turned off and I plug it in to charge, it will turn back on.  I then turn it off again. It is off for about 3 seconds, then turns itself back on again.  The whole time it charges the screen NEVER goes into sleep mode.  If I turn it off and leave it (not charging), it periodically will sound as though it is coming on again and the screen will light.  Within about 5 seconds, the noise stops and the screen again goes blank.  Have any of you had this happen to yours?  I think I should take it back.  What are your thoughts?
Also, I can receive texts, but it will not send them.  Any thoughts?
I appreciate all the help I can get.  This is my first Smartphone, and......it doesn't seem to be very smart so far.

Sorry about the problems you are seeing.  I'm surprized you're Son's Ally is turning off during a Charge, normally they stay on.  The Screen should go into Sleep mode at the interval you set, like 30 Sec, 1 Minute, so on but the phone is on with the LED Lite displaying the charge status, Red, White, or Green.  What do you have your Screen time out set to???  Look under Settings>> Sound & Display>> at the very bootom of the menu is Screen TImeout..
The Ally you have that keeps power cycling sounds like there is an issue with it.  I know you are running Android 2.1 but what version of LG Software do you have in the Ally?  It should be version 'ZV6'  to find this out,, Look in the settings> About Phone>> and at the very bottom "SW Version"  It should end with 'ZV6"
With the Txt messages, we have seen some issue we think are with Android delaying messages...  Not stoping them but some times they come in groups...  Is this what you are seeing?  Are there any Errors?  Have you checked with Verizon to make sure your settings on the network end are correct?
SOmeone mentioned reseting the phone...  You can do this if you like, it will erase all of your Personal Data and any Apps you have added, but it will restore the phone to the Factory defaults, just like it came out of the Box...  I have seen this clear up some oddities...
Let me know what I can do to help.

  • Macbook won't stay turned off. Please Help

so i spilled some water on my keyboard and a few of the keys are no longer working however one of the keys is acting like its held down thus keeping my macbook powered up. so every time i shut down it just powers right back up. My question is will an external keyboard cancel out the built-in keyboard and is there a way to make my macbook only power up by pressing the power button at the top right to temporarily fix my problem until i can get it fixed or buy an external keyboard. Any help is good help at this point.
    Thanks
    Jeff

I've had this same problem off and on for months. It is a major pain since the battery drains quickly win the phone won't stay in the standby or off modes.
I went into the genius bar once but it stopped having the problem about an hour before my appointment.
Usually when this occurs I just dock the phone and hope for the best. Sometimes it fixes itself when attached to the doc and sometimes a hard reset works, but not always. Of course, when I'm out and about I'm screwed since the phone drains quickly.
I am currently experiencing the same problem so I will try a restore at home.
I want this addressed before my warranty is up!

  • IPad won't stay turned off

My iPad2 stays turned on and draining the battery.
Closing the cover doesn't put it to sleep.
I also tried (several times) the hard shutdown... Holding down the start & top buttons for over 10 seconds until the screen goes black. Then as soon as I let go, it reboots itself, all the way up to the home screen.
    Happens on repeated tries.
Anyone else experienced this obviously wrong behavior? It just started happening to me over the past 2 or 3 days. I've had the iPad for about 19 months.

That didn't do any good either. I' sure now that it's an iPad hardware failure. Several weeks ago, the volume control buttons stopped working ... Press them, and nothing happens. The folks at the apple store tried restoring the unit etc. etc. and nothing helped. They finally noted that the sound would still work if an external speaker is plugged in -- but ONLY if an external was plugged in. They told me that the motherboard was failing and that nothing could be done about it because the 1-yr warranty had expired.
So I' m sure this latest problem is just the next step in the slow death of the hardware, even tho the unit has never been dropped or got wet.
I guess I must just have got a lemon (I assume that not ALL IPads hardware start failing within the first two years).
I'll think about replacing it with a new one, but first I'll take some time to look at Android and Microsoft tablets, too.

  • My iPhone 4S won't stay turned off without being plugged into a charger . I reset it and nothing .. Help

    Please help !!

Clean the iPhone charging port with a clean dry toothbrush. See if better. If still problem and if there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation or set up service and take to Apple. If no coverage, clean again with toothbrush and small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol. If still problem, next step would be to replace the iPhone charging port with attached flex cable. Apple would handle this with Replacement iPhone 4S for $199.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Installed itunes on another computer and need to turn off automatic update

I have itunes on my desktop at home and it is set to manually update my songs on my ipod (I have more songs on my 80GB ipod video than on my desktop). I am now traveling with a laptop and just installed itunes on my laptop. itunes won't let you turn off the automatic update setting until you plug your ipod into your computer. I am afraid to plug my laptop into my computer because it will automatically update the music (wipe out all my music on my ipod). Can I somehow turn off automatic update (switch to manual) before I plug my ipod into my laptop? Also, I know there is software that allows you to move the music from the ipod to the laptop, but I don't want to move all that music to the laptop. I want to continue updating my ipod manually on my laptop. Please help. Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
If you set the iPod to be manually managed on one computer, that setting will follow the iPod to any other computer you connect it to. However, even if you don't have the iPod set that way, when you connect the iPod to a foreign library, you'll receive an message in iTunes when it recognizes the iPod that the iPod is synced with another library, and you can click 'Cancel' and still get to the iPod's Summary page to put it into manual mode, without it changing any content on the iPod. If it makes you feel better, you can also click Edit and go to Preferences, click the Syncing tab, and select the option to "Disable automatic syncing for iPods & iPhones" prior to connecting your iPod.
    Hope this is helpful

  • T500 won't stay powered off

    Hi,
I am very satisfied with my T500, which serves me well. One small issue:
I am unable to power the T500 off by shutting down the OS. First I thought, well, Linux maybe can't handle the power down but:
Linux has been handling the power off successfully for the past two years.
If that was the case, then it would just stop at the end of the shutdown process. My notebook doesn't do that. It reboots.
I then tried to press the power switch (at the "Thinkpad logo" screen prior to boot) until it shut down; it did, but came back to life after a few seconds, booting again. I tried turning it off for some minutes, then resorted to cut the power by removing the battery when no file system was in use (prior to boot).
Later I discovered that it seems to work with a power off if I disconnect AC power, but I cannot say if that is the case. Update: No, doesn't help any. It seems like coincidence if it actually stays off.
Is this known? Is my thinkpad a workaholic and wants to keep running? Does it just not know when to quit?
    Advice please.
    Greetings
    -T.

Have you updated any of the software recently? Changed any hardware? What flavor of Linux are you using?
My gut tells me its a hardware issue and not a software issue, since the machine refuses to stay off. I suspect that something is either pressing on the power button or causing some kind of intermittent short. Obviously, this is not causing the computer to turn off once it is on, so it is not acting as if the button is being pressed and held in. Regardless, lets try to isolate the source of the problem.
Please check the BIOS and disable the Wake on LAN or any other wake functions accessible to you.
Please try this and tell me what happens:
    Save any pending work
    Close any open programs
    Go to a console
Issue the following command as root (either with su, sudo, or as appropriate for you Linux flavor)
    shutdown -h now
You should see a message that it is safe to shutdown, and you may then power the machine off.
If that doesn't work, please follow 1-4, but try issuing a "shutdown -n now" instead. Remember to do this as root.
Please let me know the results of either command.
If the shutdown command was not able to solve your issue, then we can try advanced trouble shooting.
With the computer off, unplug the computer from the power adapter and remove the battery. Then hold the power button in for about 30 seconds. Then alternatively tap the power button and the ESC key. Once you are done doing this, put the battery back in, plug the computer back in, and hope it stays off. If not, we can try the next step in the process.
I am assuming your computer is no longer under warranty. If a warranty still applies, I would have a tech attempt to solve the problem. If you are out of warranty, then I suggest you disconnect the internal keyboard and see if that resolves the issue by following these steps:
Find an external keyboard and confirm that it works properly under your operating system by plugging the external into the system and using it. You should also make sure the external keyboard will allow you to access the BIOS. Leave the external plugged in.
Shutdown the system properly (by removing the adapter and battery prior to any drives being mounted).
Follow the hardware maintenance manual, and disconnect the keyboard from the system board.
Partially reassemble the computer, but leave the keyboard disconnected.
Put the battery back in & plug the computer back into the wall.
Hopefully, the machine will not stay off. If it does, you may want to purchase and install a new keyboard and hopefully your issue will continue to stay resolved. If it does power back on, use the external keyboard to properly shut the machine down, and then reattach the internal keyboard. Let us know the issue isn't resolved, and maybe someone else will have suggestions, since at that point my only thoughts would be to remove devices such as RAM, disk drive, etc. one by one to see if the issue resolves and if it does, then replace the part. If the issue remained unresolved after that, I would consider either living with the issue, picking up a known good system board on ebay, or replacing the system.

  • IPhone 4s mobile data does not stay turned off.

I have an iPhone 4s running iOS 7.1.2.  When I go into the mobile settings and turn off the mobile data on my applications that I don't want to use my mobile data for, when I exit out of the settings and go back in, they have been turned back on.  I've tried a hard reset and doing a reset and then putting the back up back on the phone and none of it seems to help.  Its already cost me an additional $40 on my last phone bill because the settings didn't stay off and my songs auto downloaded even though I had the settings turned off.
If there is a fix other than having to reset and not use my backup I would love that, as nothing else I seem to try works.

Clean the iPhone charging port with a clean dry toothbrush.
If still problem, iPhone 4S has full Warranty, make Genius Reservation and take iPhone to Apple for resolution.

  • Toshiba LCD 40G300 television won't stay shut off after connecting to my tablet

I have an ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T. I connect my tablet to my television by using the HDMI port on the television. This action works completely fine. When I disconnect my tablet from the television and attempt to turn off my television, the television turns off momentarily and then turns back on. The only way that I have found to correct this is to unplug my television. This apparently allows the television to reset itself and thus I'm able to shut off the television and have it stay off. Please advise as to what I can do so that I don't have to continue to unplug my television to shut it off.
    Thanks!

Does this happen only after using it with the tablet? Do any other devices have this effect?
What happens if you turn off the TV first and then unplug the tablet?

  • Does it harm the battery if the macbook stays turned off for a few months?

I might be in a situation where I will not use my macbook for a few months. A family member may use it occasionally, but it would be turned off most of the time. Does this hurt the battery or other aspects of computer performance?

From the User Manual: "Storing your MacBook If you are going to store your MacBook for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (ideally, 71° F or 22° C) and discharge the battery to 50 percent. When storing your computer for longer than five months, discharge the battery to approximately 50 percent and then remove it from your MacBook. To maintain the capacity of the battery, recharge the battery to 50 percent every six months or so."
