Computer won't turn on further than spinning wheel and apple sign

I have just deleted a whole bunch of junk off my computer, after that I restarted it and it would not turn on further than the spinning wheel and apple sign. I have tried putting the leopard installation cd in and rebooting it, but it didn't work.
Can someone please help me!

Clearly some of the "junk" was not.
We need a list of files you deleted and perhaps we can help you restore the ones that were not junk.
Can you do a Safe boot? That would be a start, and if you did not empty the trash, I suggest restoring all the files in it.
When removing files, never flush the trash and always delete one at a time. It prevents a catastrophe from occurring.
And please never never make triplicate or duplicate posts. It's very rude and nobody knows to which one to reply.

  • IBook G4 appears to start then sticks at spinning wheel and apple screen

    Hello there,
I have an old G4 laptop. Recently installed Airport Extreme card, started it up, no worries! Then was prompted to download updated software from Apple. Did so. But then when I tried to restart it all I get is the Apple chime, then the screen with the spinning wheel and apple logo. The startup does not continue from there. It just keeps on spinnin'. I have tried reboot, restart commands, battery out, battery in. The cord and battery appear fine, but just can't back into my Mac.
    I'd appreciate any tips please.
    Thanks,
    Kurt

Have you tried to SafeBoot on startup, and then see if using Disk Utility's
'repair disk permissions' on the selected Macintosh HD lists fixes? {The
safeboot startup takes some time, often that can take many minutes of
    holding the Shift- key down on startup before it goes into login screen...}
Then see if the computer would restart normally.
Or, if nothing happens after that, have you tried starting the computer
up with the OS X Installer disc1 (the boot/install disc) and C -key held
down until you see it is attempting to load the Installer. Then, choose
from the menubar from the Installer header (perhaps not first window
you see on bootup from install disc) and look for the drop-down menu
with Disk Utility in it. Run it from there, to Repair Disk and also to run
Repair Disk Permissions. Note any error messages, and also see if
the SMART status is indicated for the hard drive as Pass/Fail.
You can choose a Startup Disk from the Installer's drop-down menu,
for when you are done with Disk Utility, the computer may attempt
to start from the installed system you are trying to fix.
There also is an Apple Hardware Test included on the original install
disc which accompanied the computer when new; it will work as a
boot volume but requires a different key held on startup to access it.
Not sure if that key is the Opt key, or another. I seldom use the AHT.
{If there appears to be issues after attempting the above, you may
    consider removing the AirPort Extreme Card, and try SafeBoot again.}
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

My computer won't turn off.  It says iPhoto is doing something and iPhoto is doing nothing, the circle has been spinning for 45 minutes.

Try that. If that doesn't help:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I spilled a little bit of soda on my keyboard ( more like big drops) and my computer won't turn on but it will still charge.  After i spilled it it kept trying to turn on and off by itself until i finally just shut it down

I spilled a little bit of soda on my keyboard ( more like big drops) and my computer won't turn on but it will still charge.  After i spilled it it kept trying to turn on and off by itself until i finally just shut it down.  Today i tried to turn it back on ( i spilled it last night) and now it won't turn on but when i plug it in the orange light comes on so it still charges.

TBF: You may have been lucky enough not to cripple your MBP immediately with your spill, but a spill such as you describe will have left obvious traces if you ever need to take your machine in for a repair of any kind. And as soon as evidence of the spill is found, any chance of the necessary repairs being performed under warranty will be gone.
Taking the machine in now to be cleaned and have the greasy parts replaced will be expensive, but doing so may save whatever remains of your warranty. For a price, Apple will restore the machine to like-new condition, and at the very least, you will then have a 90-day repair warranty on it. If you have significantly more time than that remaining on your original one-year warranty, and especially if you've bought the extended AppleCare Protection Plan, it would probably be worth taking the machine in to a Genius Bar for a look-over. Ask whether, if you have Apple clean and repair the machine now, your new-computer warranty and AppleCare plan will be reinstated afterward or whether all you'll have is the short repair warranty from now on. If the spill will negate your warranty and AppleCare even if you have Apple clean it, then the cleaning probably isn't worth paying for. But if paying for the cleaning will get your warranty and AppleCare reinstated, it may be worth doing.

  • Computer won't turn on and the power cord doesn't light up

My problem with the computer is that it will not turn on. The battery is fully charged, power cord is plugged into a working outlet. I have held down the power button for 10 second or even longer. Nothing turns it on and the power cord doesn't light up at all. Any thing will help.
    Thanks

First, check that your AC outlet has power. Second, see this article: Intel-based iMac- What to do if your computer won't turn on and this one Resetting MacBook and MacBook Pro System Management Controller (SMC).

  • Computer won't turn on HELP!

    Hi,
My computer won't turn on after a few hardware swaps I did.
    Parts :
    MSI Z77 Mpower, i5 3570k @ 4.0 Ghz, ATI HD4870, Gskill sniper low voltage 2x4gb 1600Mhz, Samsung 840 series 256gb (os), 2x ST4000DM000 (raid 1).
So here's what I did. I shut down the computer, I disconnected every wire with caution to wait for CL_CMOS LED to turn off before pulling the cord. I then switched my ram for Gskill Ares 2x8Gb 1866Mhz (occupying DIMM slots 2 and 4, same ones as my previous ram sticks) and switched my GPU for Asus R9 280x DCUII.
I reconnected everything, CL_CMOS LED powered on. When I pushed the power button, nothing. I pushed and pushed again but nothing happens. I noticed that CL_CMOS LED turns off after I try to push the ON button on my case. When I switch the power off, the LED remains off until it flashes briefly and turns off again.
I've tried putting my old parts back in 1 by 1 but it won't turn on again.
    Please help!
    edit : old ram timings (CL9-9-9-24, 1.25V) new ram timings (CL10-11-10-30, 1.5V)
edit2 : The lights on my new gpu's pcb were lit during this struggle. Power could come from the pcie adapters though.

As in Reply #1, keep that configuration and use the switch on the mainboard over to the other BIOS chip. For some reason, it sounds like the one chip may be corrupted or maybe the PSU has become faulty. Double check the security of the 24-pin and CPU power 8-pin connections.
Thanks for your help. I fixed the problem. I am a bit ashamed to say what was wrong but ... the 24 pin connector was loose on the psu side.
I figured it out after 2 days of disassembling/assembling computer and testing components.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Battery won't charge, computer won't turn on

My battery won't charge, even though the power adapter light is on as if charging. I've tried using other power dapaters of the same model, with the same results; no charge. Now the battery is dead and the computer won't turn on. Should I just get a new battery?

I tried resetting the PMU, before the battery totally ran out. Now I'm sure the battery is totally dead, but not sure if it will charge once I get a new battery. Looking at other postings, it sounds like the problem could be with the logic board.

Does the ext directory have the php_oci8.dll? In the original steps the PHP dir is renamed. In the given php.in the extension_dir looks like it has been updated correctly. Since PHP distributes php_oci8.dll by default I reckon there would be a very good chance that the problem was somewhere else. Since this is an old thread I don't think we'll get much value from speculation.

  • The CRT won't come on and the computer won't turn off. ???

    Hi all,
I just got another free Rev. A iMac CRT today - it was in an old, abandoned school and the people who were moving everything out of the school thought it was dead, so they gave it to me. I tried starting it up, and it wouldn't turn on. When I took off the back to see if it had any good parts in it, it turned out everything was unplugged in the back, so I plugged it all back it. It worked great, I was deleting the school's files and apps so I could sell it, until a few minutes ago when I tried to wake it up from sleep. The display just wouldn't come on. I though it just wasn't waking up. I tried typing on the keyboard and clicking the mouse, and I finally pressed the power button on the keyboard, when I heard the normal beep it makes when you press the power button on the keyboard and it gives you the dialogue box "Do you wanna turn it off, restart it, etc?" I thought, "this is weird, why isn't the display on?" So I pressed the enter key, figuring that Turn Off was the option selected and that the display would come on when I turned it back on. Sure nuff, the computer turned off. I waited a few seconds and turned it back on. The display still wouldn't come on. I waited a few minutes til I was sure it was all the way booted up. It won't respond to the keyboard, the mouse, repeated jabs in the reset button on the side, or the power buttons on both the unit and the keyboard. I held down the power button for an entire minute and the display won't turn on and the computer won't turn off.
This is totally bizzare. Does anyone know how to a) turn on the display or b) turn off the computer? It's looking like I'm going to have to unplug it and try again later.
By the way, it's running 9.2.2, like the one in my signature line.

I finally pulled the plug and restarted and it's working fine now. Does anyone know what happened? I think it could've had something to do with the PRAM battery; every time I've started it up it's said the date is January 1956 and the time is 9:55. hmmm...
Edit: I just realized that in addition to the date being 1956, the hard drive was completely randomly renamed to "k hortdpc." ***???
Another edit: I just realized I probably renamed the hard drive in my frantic random clicking and typing - I probably accidentally clicked the hard drive name and randomly typed a new name in my attempts to wake up the computer. oops
