Computer zapped by power surge caused by lightning

My computer was zapped by a power surge caused by lightning, with my iTouch connected. I just got a new computer and installed iTunes. When I plug in my iTouch, nothing happens. No beeps, no lights, no battery indicator...nothing.
I've tried it on another computer. Same thing happens...nothing.
The iTouch seems to work ok with the content (movies and music) that is already on it, but I cannot get it to communicate with any computer.
Could this surge have damaged just this one part of the iTouch?

It strikes me as odd that the iPod still works but does not synchronise. I would have thought that with the nature of electronics today, that if a strike had affected it, then none of it would work -- guesswork of course. However, the cable does have those connectors at each end and one of those might have taken the force of the strike and thus saved the iPod from damage. Cheaper than a new iPod for sure if it is this.

  • BT Dispute - Power surge caused damage to the Fron...

    I am currently in dispute with BT re Engineer Call Out for £99. His report states that a power surge caused damage to the NTE5 (Network Terminal Equipment) Service Specific Front Plate which caused me to have no dial tone. Broadband Infinity was unaffected.
    He told me at the time that there had been a lightening strike in the area and was having to change face plates for a lot of customers but the official report states "I arrived at the site and found that the fault was on the NTE5 (Network Terminal Equipment) Service Specific Front Plate due to power surge. I changed the plate. The eclipse was tested OK. I tested and demonstrated the working of the line with the customer"
    Is a  power surge a feasible explanation? What would cause such a situation?

    Yes i know he's been charged, what i was trying to say was under openreach rules the repair should have been free... here is a copy direct from openreaches charging section...

    Openreach is responsible for any lightning damage to its network and overhead or underground cabling. It is not liable for any compensation or the repair/replacement costs for End User owned wiring or apparatus damaged by lightning.
    If there is lightning damage to the external network, dropwire, aerial cable routes, poles or exchanges then Openreach will not charge for the replacement of the NTE or Master Socket. The NTE can be damaged as a result of inductive lightning; this is where a strike takes place within proximity of the Openreach Network causing an induced current surge damaging the NTE and / or End User Apparatus, but with no other signs of damage to the Network. There should still be NO charge for the NTE replacement.
    Where there is damage to the End User owned wiring and/or apparatus with no damage to the Openreach network i.e. confirmation of a good test result with equipment unplugged, then a visit charge should be raised.
    Where there is lightning and power surge damage to the End User owned wiring and Openreach has been authorised to carry out a repair then this work will be chargeable under TRC for time and materials. A visit charge will not be raised if the engineer is required carry out any repair to the Openreach network on the premises due to lightning damage on the same visit.

  • My computer says "Power Surge in Power Hub" when My iPod touch is plugged in. How can I fix this?

    I have had an iPod Touch 5th Generation for a few months now. I recently updated to iOS 7. Now, when I plug it into a computer it says "Power Surge in Power Hub". It haas never done this before and when I plug it into a different computer, the same message comes up. How can I fix this?

    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use. Your error message is a symptom of a bad cable
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Power Surge ruined external drive

    Wonder if anyone can help?
    Am operating a Mac Pro at work and recently a power surge caused one of my WD books to corrupt... it's currently in the lab being worked on but needless to say that it was a bit of a nightmare and has prompted the purchase of a G RAID pronto.
    Just wondering what could have caused the power surge? I'm running two Cinema HD monitors, one of which is using a higher power adaptor than was supplied. The last adaptor failed and the monitor would not operate with another of the same power... MAc Forums suggested that a higher power adaptor was the solution and it worked.
    However, could this be the cause of the power surge? Just keen to prevent another drive being wiped out in the same way...

    Hi CD,
    Sorry to hear about your corrupted WD book.
    I use Belkin SurgeMaster Surge Protectors to protect all my computer and TV/audio visual equipment:
    http://www.belkin.com/uk/powersolutions/
    My Mac Pro based computer system, which is used solely for my personal use (including photo editing, digital imaging and colour printing up to A2 size), and which is insured for £13,000.00+ on my home contents insurance policy, is protected by a Belkin SurgeMaster with a Connected Equipment Warranty up to £75,000.00:
    http://www.belkin.com/uk/powersolutions/warranties/
    I know that the Belkin SurgeMaster does not give the protection of a UPS for work in process, but I do not need that because Time Machine does hourly back-ups, which is adequate for my usage.
    My hi-fi set-up is the only system which is not protected by a Belkin SurgeMaster. Instead, that is protected by an Isotek Orion mains filter, designed specifically for audio systems:
    http://www.isoteksystems.com/cgi-bin/products.pl?id=13
    As you are using a Mac Pro for work, perhaps you need a UPS to protect work in process against power cuts, but your ancillary equipment could be protected by Belkin SurgeMaster(s) at a fraction of the cost of a UPS.
    Just a thought!
    Regards,
    Bill

  • IPOD Shuffle not recognized by computer, and caused a  USB power surge

    Device is not recognized by computer, and I tried the listed support recommendations.
    The problem originated when I plugged the IPOD shuffle directly into the computer USB ( not using a hub), and this caused a warning window to appear saying unknown device has caused a power surge to this port, and most be removed. Prior to this event, the IPOD shuffle has worked (with direct contact with computer usb or through a powered highspeed usb hub) without issue for nearly 1 year. Any taker's on this issue? Thanks.

    Hi JBR,
    Go to your control panel and click on Install/Uninstall programs. Scroll down and see if you have multiple versions of the ipod updater installed on your computer. If you do, then uninstall both versions. Reboot your computer.
    Next, go to the downloads page and download/install the 1-10-2006 ipod updater. Once installed, go to your start programs and select ipod updater from there. Plug in your ipod and wait a moment. If it's like mine, it'll recognize your ipod and then you can do a "restore" for a clean format.
    After that, open itunes and life should be good.
    Hope this helps!

    Ouch, not much more you can do, I think you'll have to have it looked at.

  • IPOD causes a power surge on every port on the computer

    My ipod died and was replaced with a new 40GB model. Now, it causes a power surge everytime I attach it to a port. Of course, Dell says its a problem with the ipod. I don't know what to do? Has anyone had this problem? How was it solved?

    That's what I figured but I wanted to be sure. The iPod charges while it is connected to the USB port. The ports of many notebook computers and most unpowered hubs supply less power than the iPod requires - hence the message. You'll need to get a powered USB hub (one that has its own power supply). They can be found at Radio Shack, as well as just about any place that sells consumer electronics for as little as $15.

  • In the process of saving a file a power surge rebooted computer. Any chance of recovering file?

    In the process of saving a file a power surge rebooted computer. Any chance of recovering file?

    Have a look at the sample script below. The "while" loop waits for the specified number of milliseconds, then reads the contents of a directory and processes every individual file in the directory. In my example, it just prints the file path to the console. You would replace this part with your Open / Save as / Move sequence.
    For more file system commands, refer to Adobe's Javascript Tools Guide, "File object functions".
    var stop = false;
    while( stop==false ) {
        // Wait for 20.000 ms
        $.sleep(20000);
        var fld = new Folder("c:/incoming");
        var filesInFld = fld.getFiles("*.fm");
        for(var f=0; f < filesInFld.length; f++) {
            // process the individual file
            $.writeln(filesInFld[f]);
        // Exit the  loop after 19:00
        var time = new Date();
        if( time.getHours() > 19 ) stop = true;

  • Power Surge w/computer 5th Generation - HELP!

    I've now connectd my IPOD into my computer and get the power surge message. I've reassigned the ports from the back and the front. I've even reset the entire Ipod...do I need to reinstall Itunes or what is the deal? I cannot add any more songs. Thanks.

    If you dried it is a sealed container with uncooked rice for a week and periodically changed the rice and it does not work it is dead.
    Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for $99 for a 16 GB 5G and $149 for the other 5Gs. They do not fix yours.

    I think you know the answer already... take it back to the store (an Apple Store, if close buy) and get a replacement. Your dock or the Shuffle's charging circuit has a short in it.

  • Won't let me copy to hard drive post power surge

    Ok, to make a long story short, I hope, I had an electrical fire (everyone's ok) that involved and destroyed my laptop's power cord and as part of that fun I seem to have had a power surge that has reset some of the defaults on my computer but not all. Some of the folders I created prior to the surge are gone, etc. The only real problem is that the permissions on my internal hard drive seem to have been reset. Below are the things it will and will not allow me to do.
    -- I cannot copy files from a flash drive, cd or external hard drive to the internal hard drive. I get that circle with a line through it. Clicking and dragging, copy/paste, nothing works.
    -- I can move stuff that is already on the internal hard drive from folder to folder.
    -- I can save email attachments to the internal hard drive.
    -- I can copy stuff from internal the hard drive to a flash drive, cd or external hard drive.
    -- I can read the files on flash drives, cds or external hard drives, such as a movie file, just fine, they run without a glitch. The peripherals did not suffer any resets as a result of the fire/power surge. When it happened the computer shut down automatically and I think that saved the accessories from being damaged because the computer is the only thing that showed any changes after it happened.
    And before someone asks, yes, I checked, I have 40 GB of HD space so it's not a space issue.
    I right clicked on MAC HD and did the Get Info and looked at the details of the permissions on various files and tried shifting some of those around but even though it says Read and Write it still won't let me copy to the internal drive from other sources. Interestingly when I got to the User file it was marked Read Only but changing it to Read Write didn't help. Something I did once worked but then it stopped working so I have no idea what it was. I put everything back the way it was. Could somebody please help me? My computer is old and dieing a slow painful death but if I can make it last a little longer that will make my life so much easier. Please let me know if you need any system info or anything.
    *Thank you!!*
    PS. I'm not posting this on the peripheral thread because the problem isn't really the peripherals, it's the system not wanting to play nice with others, so that's why I put this over here.

    Hi. It's not a dumb question, cause if it is then my answer is really stupid, what's a repair permission? lol I don't know what that is so I guess the answer is no, though I can guess from the name it's a program to fix permissions if the files get messed up? I knew how to change the permissions in Get Info but past that I was getting into things I don't know so I figured it was time to ask for help or I'd be on here asking how to un-erase a hard drive. jk So how would I do that and is there anything else I should do?
    Sorry if my initial post was a bit defensive. I had a moderator give me flak over some minor thing on a post once and I was supremely frustrated with this problem. Sorry if it came out kinda angry. I appreciate any help you can give me.

  • Use of WRT54G after Power Surge

    I was very satisfied with my WRT54G v2 until I went on vacation and came back.  While on vacation a power surge or lightning struck and wiped out a bunch of things from my garage door opener to office:  cable modem (no ethernet port), router (no internet port), old BEFSR41 used as a switch (power supply dead).
    After puttering for awhile, the WRT54G has some limited lifesigns.
    -- wireless access works fine
    -- switch ports work fine
    -- Internet port does not work
    Question:
    -- Is this something that is serviceable?
    -- Can it be converted into an access point or something?
    Are old power supplys available for BEFSR41?  or is it just junk now (even with supply, it could be fried)
    A few thoughts would be worthwhile

    You can still use the router like a wireless switch. It can be either connected straight to a modem for a single wireless computer or be connected to an existing network that has a router.
    All you have to do is connect this router to the modem on any of it's switch ports and same thing if it'll be connected to a switch or a router.

  • 30GB Power Surge

    I plugged my 30 GB Ipod into an Internet Cafe computer here in Bangkok. I felt a power surge which isnt unusual here and I looked at the screen and saw that it had turned completely blank. There was no "Do Not Disconnect" sign as per usual. I took it back to my apartment and plugged it into the charger, thinking that this may do something to restore power to my Ipod.
    Well the power came back on but the power meter will now only show a Completely charged icon until the battery dies. Then when I charge it it shows the usual lightning bolt.
    In addition the Ipod cannot connect to my laptop, any other computer, even with a different USB cable. I havent tried updating it as it wont be recognized by a computer whatsoever.
    Im not really sure how to go about completely resetting it as Im somewhat confused as to how to backup files when I cant make the drive readable.
    Since the power surge the player has worked, playing songs and in fact updated my artist list to show every artist that is actually on the Ipod. (Before the songs were there but some artists were missing...seems to be a common issue)
    Battery life seems normal since.
    Prior, I had a complete erase of my hard drive about a week after I bought the ipod. I blame that more on myself (disconnected incorrectly possibly)
    I have about a month left of warranty protection so Im wondering what steps I should take?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Iphone and power surge?

    I frequently plug my iphone in at night to charge while I sleep. The other night we had a thunderstorm, which is frequent in my parts, and I woke up in a panic to unplug my phone in case the power went out, or worse flickered and caused a power surge.
    It didn't happen (thankfully) but it got me thinking...should the iphone when plugged directly into A/C power source be plugged into a surge protector? May seem obvious, since anything electrical can be damaged by surges, just wondering if iphone has any kind of internal protection. I don't know many people who plug their cell phones into a surge protector, I never did, but I never cared until I got my iphone

    It is a good practice to have you phone behind a surge surpressor. I test product every day for surge per the CE requirements and work for Ericsson, so I have seen first hand what can happen. Just putting on your PC is better but the energy still gets on the computer.

    PS
    I used to use a QTEC PSU, when I arrived here.......it does sound "daft" but is a true fact.....
