Computers can no longer see eachother & share resources

I have the wireless WRT54G2 router. I connect using my laptop wirelessly through the router. My desktop computer is connected through the router wired.
Laptop is Vista, desktop is XP. This is nothing new, and everything worked fine up until a few weeks ago. I was having connectivity issues and so I was trying all kinds of things to see if it would fix it, including power cycling my cable modem and (possibly my router as well.. this being a few weeks ago I don't remember). Finally I got my connection back up and running, and I remember noticing a message had popped up on the laptop (I think it was above the system tray in the same style with which the messages saying you're connected to the internet pop up) that said something about my ip address. I think this is the key to the problem. I wish I could remember exactly what it said. But it went away by itself, and I was able to access the internet just fine from both computers, so I thought nothing of it. (I should have known better.)
Today for the first time since that incident, I was trying to print something from the laptop using the printer that's connected to the desktop and is shared over the network, and realized I couldn't. Upon investigation I realized that now, I can't see my desktop at all under view computers and devices (keep in mind, I was always able to prior to the earlier incident). Being Vista, I figured there was some setting that got switched without my knowledge or something... and it wasn't that either. My network is still set as a private network with network discovery turned on. No firewalls got turned on. Checked my desktop's settings, nothing changed there that I can find, either.
I have been trying unsuccessfully to find a solution. My router's SSID matches the connection my laptop is connected to. The two computers have unique names with the same workgroup.  They just cannot see eachother anymore.
I also noticed when i'm looking at the settings for my router under "Wi-Fi Protected Setup", it says it can't find my client device. After reaching 99% it says "Connection Failure! Your client device failed to connect to the network. Refer back to your client device for further instructions." I have noticed that the light over the button is sometimes steady green and sometimes is steady amber. I don't recall seeing it amber ever in the past. I don't know if this is relevant or not, just trying to include all the information I can. Can anyone else give me some clues? Thanks.

I finally found the solution to my problem, if the ping works of course, then it is probably the same NetBIOS problem I was having. Here is the solution:
On the VISTA Machine:
1.  Right click your adapter in the task bar at the bottom left
2. Select  "Network and Sharing Center"
3.  On the left side, click "Manage Network Connections"
4. Right click on the adapter you are using to connect to the network.
5. Select "Properties"
6. Highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
7. Click the button "Properties"
8. Click the "Advanced" button
9. Click on the "WINS" tab
10. Under the section "NetBIOS Settings", select "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
11. Click "Ok" on all configuration boxes to save settings.
On the XP Machine:
1. Open Control Panel 
2. Double click Network connections
3. Follow steps 4-11 from above

    My network has always connected no problem. Suddenly today I can no longer see the computers on my LAN. These are all windows shares. All I see are two alias' Llbrary and Servers. Mail and internet operates normally both by ethernet and wireless. I've tried everything I can think of. I managed one time to bring up a folder Workgroups but I have lost that too. I think that folder is usually empty though. I was told there was a short power outage which required a reboot of the servers but that is not unusual. Windows client on the network continue to see each other. Any ideas?

    As the title suggests! I can no longer see any of the computers in my network, Mac or otherwise.
    I have checked sharing permissions on all required computers and all seems to be good and have disabled firewalls.
    I notice a few people have had similar problems with screen sharing but I am not even seeing another station to pottentialy share a screen with!

    I was able to transfer my library books by downloading and then transferring them to my kobo through ADE. Now when I open my ADE my Kobo doesn't show up but the kobo is connected to my computer and I can see it in my control panel.

  • Imac and Macbook pro can no longer see one another

    I'm not sure why, but all since I upgraded to Yosemite, I can no longer see my iMac on my Macbook Pro and vice versa. I could always see the computer that I needed to connect to in finder, or I could connect with my iCloud password. As of today, I can no longer access my iMac from my Macbook Pro and that's a problem. If someone could provide directions (dumbed down version) explaining how to connect the computers from scratch, I would greatly appreciate it. I am fine with setting it up again but I can't recall how I did it.  Thanks so  much. I did upgrade both my iMac and MacBook pro to Yosemite over the weekend.

    On my new computer the Bookmarks list no longer 'highlights' the website that I have clicked on and am viewing online. Therefore, I can no longer see exactly which site (location/name) I am viewing because I have quite a number of bookmarks. It wastes time to go to several bookmarked sites in search of the site I am currently visiting.
    Bottom line: I want the Bookmarks list to highlight the site I am currently visiting as it did on my previous computers (all Dell). Is there a setting to make this happen?

    It actually does highlight but in colour which is barely distinguishable so it appears that no highlighting is on.

  • IMac Can No Longer See MBP for File Sharing

    Hello all,
    I have had my iMac and MBP set up for ages to see one another and share files. Worked like a charm. Now, all of a sudden, the iMac can no longer see the MBP - but - the MBP CAN see the iMac and connect. Odd??
    To my knowledge, nothing has been changed on my end. File Sharing is on. Firewall is off. Both units have the latest updates from Apple and the AEBS has the latest firmware and is working pefectly.
    What can I do to troubleshoot this?

    Well, when I rebooted the MBP, it magically appeared on the iMac..so I thought all was well. However, I am now suspicious of the iMac as the culprit.
    For example, I have a USB Disk connected to the AEBS - and the iMac is connected to it right now, showing the ddisk icon on the desktop. I can browse the contents.
    However, when clicking on Network in the Finder, the AEBS does not appear at all! Even though I am connected to the disk. Why would this be?
    I am not against trying your idea - but this new information might point us in another direction?

  • One other user & I can no longer see each other in the buddy list

    My friend & I, who have used iChat for years, and also recently, and neither of us has changed anything, can no longer see each other in either one of our buddy lists.
    We've checked:
    - That neither of us is blocking the other
    - That other people can see us - they can
    - That we can see other people - we can - we can even see the same people as each other, just not each other
    We've tried blocking & unblocking each other, in case that would reset something, and both rebooted our Mac's several times.
    Any ideas???

But it would be really nice to get to the bottom of it, because if it happens once it can happen again. Who knows? Maybe there are other people in my buddy list that this is happening with right now, but we don't know it. This person just happens to be someone I chat with a lot, and we noticed we weren't seeing each other.

  • ITunes + Vista = my computer can no longer see my DVDrw drive...

    I just downloaded iTunes 7.6.2.9 onto my Dell Inspiron E1705 - and when I restart my computer, the computer can no longer see my Optical drive (DVDrw). I contacted Dell support, and they changed something in the regedit limits or something(I'm not a techy lol), and my optical drive was back.
    But the next day when I opened iTunes I got a message that says:
    "Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
    So I reinstalled iTunes.
    I restarted my computer, and it could no longer see my optical drive AGAIN. My DVDrw drive gets an error that says "This device cannot start (Code 10)." When I check for solutions it says "Could not load driver software."
    I go back to Dell support and tell them my optical drive isn't working. They do the exact same thing to fix it (deleting some limit with regedit) and it works. I open iTunes, and I get the iTunes Warning (Setup Assistant Error).
    I asked the Dell tech what the deal was, and he said iTunes isn't compatible at all with Vista.
    But according to Mac's website it is...
    Anyone know what's going on?!?!

    I am having the exact same behavior as xhollysue!
    It goes like this:
    1. Install ITunes, lose optical disk drives hardware (they don't even show up in Windows Explorer).
    2. Use RegEdit to disable Upper Filters at HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}, optical drive hardware re-appears.
    3. iTunes requires a re-install to permit CD burning, and your back to square one.
    I got the above fix NOT from a Dell technician, but, instead, from a Microsoft technician, which cost me $70.
    I would strongly urge Apple to research this issue and come up with a more reasonable workaround since (1) the iPhone is being adopted by many traditional MS users and the use of iTunes is an integral part of the iPhone technology architecture; (2) iPhone 3G is just now shipping and will bring even more into the Apple camp; and (3) iTunes is clearly a better media player.
    Come on Apple. Let's get some enthusiam and take advantage of this opportunity!

    I tried to forward public port 1025 to private port 80 on a raspberry pi using  airport utility. But after I did that,  the airport utility can no longer see my time capsule. Wifi still works correctly. Are there any conflicts about port 1025? How to fix that other than resetting the time capsule?

    It doesn't sound like a port that is used.
    From the standard google search.. nope.
    Reboot the whole network..
    No luck tell me what OS version you are running the utility on and what model and firmware TC???
    Note with Yosemite, anything can and will happen.

  • Can No Longer See User Folder in Intrnl Drive after transferring to Ext Drv

    I'm trying very hard not to freak out right now, but I can no longer see my User Folder/Home in the Finder Bar after dragging and dropping it into the my newly formatted Seagate External Drive. I have OS 10.4.11 and am trying to install Snow Leopard, but before I do I wanted to back-up my hard drive. So I plugged in the Seagate, formated it for Macs, and then dragged and dropped he User Folder into the Seagate and now it is gone!
    Would greatly appreciate advice on how to find the User Folder so I can return it to the Internal Drive AND help on how to properly copy it to the Seagate External Drive as I have been unsuccessful.

    Not really. I previously tried that already. I added Chinese (Taiwan) and moved up pre-existing English as the phone language. Also set navigation voice in Here Drive+ to Chinese. Result:
    1. Street names still shows in English (it goes with phone language obviously), like "Da Xing Rd." However, some landmarks will show in both languages. 
    2. Navigation voice is in Chinese but all the street names are announced in English, so e.g. "Da Xing Rd." is announced as "Da-Sing-R-D". ("St." will be announced as "S-T"...) (This is the same as in WP8)

    I too was having the same problem However, I could access both the menu bar and the dock by hovering my mouse over them so it wasn't a huge problem but I prefered having it there anyway. I was not in full screen mode and I could still go into full screen mode if I wanted to.  I found the easiest solution was to just quit safai and restart it, but it might not work for you considering you couldn't access you menu bar either way.
    I found this article that allows you to hide/show the menu bar and the dock through TextEdit (didn't work for me) http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2009/07/hide-the-menubar-or-dock-in-specific-app s.html It is pretty old so it might not work for lion and a bit risky if you don't know what you're doing so I wouldn't really recommend doing it this way.
    And KSheppard, I know it's not really any of my buisness, but the way to get answers to a question isn't by insulting others and being quick-tempered. Even if you feel like you were insulted first, don't try snapping at people who aren't obligated to help you. Honestly, it just makes everything easier if everybody is cooperative and polite.

    If you mean you cannot read the code on the back of the card take it back to the store you purchased it from. If the numbers are not visable because you scratched them out I don't know if the store will replace or refund that. If you can read some of the numbers you could just keep trying a combination of letters and numbers to replace the missing ones. This will take a while depending on how many inputs are missing. You will have to use 0 through 9 and I am guessing A through Z.

    Go to the View menu and turn on the Status Bar. If you don't see the menus, go to the small icon with the arrow at the extreme upper left and select "Show Menu Bar":

    First, are you positive it is really not there?  Have you looked in your iTunes folder in your Music folder, and in the media folders there? Do you see your media files?
    If your media are gone it is a lot easier to restore from a proper computer backup.  Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
