Computers don't recognize iPod, but can charge with iHome

Help. My daughter has an iPod touch 3rd gen. She can charge it on her iHome and it seems to work fine, but neither her PC nor my MAC will recognize the device. So the iPod seems to work fine, but we cannot sync it anymore. We have tried rebooting and using different USB cables, but nothing will work. Has anyone heard of this? Is the iPod shot?

Have you tried another cable?
Assuming you mean that iTunes on the computer does not see the iPod:

  • ITunes recognizes iPod but can't sync - driver missing?

Here's the rundown. Several months ago, the complete content of the old XP machine where this iPod's library resided was migrated to a Windows 7 Home Premium system using LapLink PC Mover.  iTunes had never previously been installed on the Windows 7 unit.  iTunes appeared to be functional afterwards, but on the first and all subsequent instances of attempting to sync the iPod, clicking on the Sync button did and still does nothing.  I have tried connecting the iPod to multiple different motherboard-based and pcie-based USB ports, and to a USB2.0 external hub. (Sometimes the screen briefly flashes as though it was switching to the sync process monitor, but usually it's just no change.)  I've tried uninstalling all of the Apple software from the machine, rebooting, and reinstalling.  (When I say "all", that includes iTunes itself, Bonjour, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, and Apple Software Update, in that order.  Trying any other order produced complaints.  Quicktime is not installed on this machine; iTunes and the iPod are not used for video.)  In looking at the postings of others who have had similar issues, I found a recommendation to reinstall another driver that I have verified is not loading and is not running with the iPod hooked up:  Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.  I have tried to reinstall this driver, but it hasn't worked.  What I have come to suspect is that something in the Windows registry got borked during the transfer, and is causing the load process for the *needed* driver to fail, possibly by trying to load the old XP version.  But my registry-fu is not strong in this, so I'm looking to see if anyone else has run across this issue previously and found a solution.
    Points to note:
Windows 7, installation was a port from XP via LapLink PCMover
5th gen classic iPod 80Gb with 34Gb free
iTunes version 11.4.0.18 is installed  (This was the current version when I started trying to find the problem.)
Apple Mobile Device Support software is loaded.
Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is NOT loading, either before or while the iPod is connected.
In Device Manager, the iPod appears as a Disk Drive and as a Portable Device when connected, but does not appear in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers list.
iTunes recognizes the iPod and can access it sufficiently to verify that it does not need to be updated.
    iTunes can eject the iPod.
    iTunes cannot sync the iPod.

I can now expand the information somewhat.  On my second, very similar setup (5th gen Classic connected to Win 7/32 with iTunes 11.4.0.18) I was able to successfully do the initial sync of the iPod several weeks ago, but this afternoon, when I tried to sync it to include the music I had added recently, it failed in the same manner as the other system.  I really, really, really DO NOT want to downgrade to iTunes 12 with it's horrible antinavigation interface and lack of the very useful and needed Sidebar, but it is beginning to look like 11.4.0.18 is problematic, and I don't have an installer for anything else at present.

  • Computers don't recognize iPod is connected.

About a month ago I was pushed an iTunes update. iTunes has not worked since. When I connect to my other computer, iTunes asked if I want to erase all content. Whow the heck do I reset, reboot or figure out how to have my computer recognize my 4th gen to

    Hi Straightbuggin,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below should help you with this:
iPod not recognized in My Computer and in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369
Usually the resolution is updating the Apple Mobile Device Driver.  See the section labeled Verify that the USB Drivers are installed > For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 > Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver.
If this does not resolve the issue, you may need to remove iTunes and all of its components as outlined in this article:

I hope this information helps ....

  • Windows recognizes iPod but it doesn’t charge

    Hi, can anyone help me?
When I connect the iPod the PC recognizes it and starts to synchronize with iTunes, but the charging icon appears full with a lighting bolt and it is not animated. After a while the when the battery is low, the iPod turns off and the synchronization is interrupted.
Also if I eject the iPod but without disconnect it from the USB, the charging icon looks unanimated.
I have used this USB port with other iPods without problems.
    Thank you

Do you know if the older units can charge with USB 2.0?
1G and 2G models can't talk USB at all. Firewire only, period.
3G models cannot charge with USB. They require Firewire to charge. 3G models can communicate via USB cables, but they need Firewire for power. A dual cable exists to let you plug it into USB for talking and the Firewire AC plug for charging at the same time.
4G's and Mini's can charge off both USB or Firewire ports. Although USB doesn't put out as much power as Firewire, so they may have fairly minor issues along these lines sometimes. Takes longer to charge, battery might wear down even though it's charging because of large disk use, etc. Those 3G dual cables will work on these units too, to prevent these problems.
Nano's and Shuffles charge only from USB ports. They don't support Firewire at all.

  • All computers don't recognize my iPod

I just recently got my iPod with color display back from apple support, and they said that there were no problems at all with my ipod. However when I hook it up to my sisters iBook or my Windows XP Pro, the computers don't recognize it. I'm thinking it might be a problem with my dock cable connector, but I'm not sure why it would suddenly stop working all of a sudden. Can anyone help?
    iPod Color   Windows XP Pro

Yeah, it was formatted for a mac, but even the iBook won't recognize it.
apologies, i wasn't thinking entirely clearly before.
the prime suspect has to be the cabling (or dock connector) now ... it's the only cross-platform candidate still on the table. (it's plausible that you're getting two different problems at once ... but less likely.)
do you have access to a different known-good connector for testing purposes?

  • Help, Windows recognizes ipod but itunes doesn't

ive tried everything that ive seen listed but nothing seems to work. My issue is that Windows recognizes ipod but itunes doesn't. I would really apprecaite it if someone could help me with this issue.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear this is still happening. I had the same problem until this newest version of itunes. The thing that always worked for me earlier was the re-starting of the ipod service. I have nothing else.
    Good luck

  • My iPhone cannot sync wif computer... But can charge wif 3pin plug charger..

My iPhone cannot sync wif computer... But can charge wif 3pin plug charger..

When you plug your iPhone into your PC and hear the sound does your iTunes show up on your computer? I would suggest a couple of things...........first, re-download iTunes...then try connecting your iPhone  USB connector to your PC. If iTunes opens but it does lot list your phone As being connected.....................un-plug your iPhone  ....and then re-plug it in (I have to do that often). If none of that works, try a hard reset of your iPhone (by holding the "sleep" and "Home" buttons until you see the white Apple logo) and then try connecting again. Let me know if this helps.

  • TA26689 can ipod classic be charged with the iPhone's or iPad's charger?

Can iPod classic be charged with the iPhone's or iPad's charger?

There shouldn't be any issue using one of those chargers.  When I need to charge something, I just connect to any 30-pin connector/charger that's closest.

  • Itunes don't recognize ipod classic

Itunes don't recognize my Ipod Classic 160 gb. The Ipod appears on the desktop, but the Itunes freezes and I have to force quit. Since I can't control the I pod from Itunes, it's not possible to restore de device. In that case, what do I have to do?

Are you charging it via a PC or a 10W wall charger?
But either way, leave it connected for at least 2 hours, there wont be any life on the iPod screen for the first 30 minutes or so.
    Have a nice day!

  • TRIED EVERYTHING!!! computer will not recognize IPOD and no charging

Tried changing cords; tried reinstalling all software; tried to determine if conflicting software; ran ipod out of power and my computer still will not recognize when I plug it in. Backlight initially lights up but ipod does not show up in device manager, itunes does not recognize it and ipod will not charge---ipod will charge on Bose speaker platform though....ANY SUGGESTIONS??????

If none of the above help, then it may be an issue that requires service so why not take advantage of the warranty?
You can arrange online service here.

  • 2nd gen ipod shuffle will charge with one computer (vista) but not the other computer (windows 8).  Please help!

My 2nd gen ipod shuffle will charge on my old vitsta computer but not my new windows 8 computer. Does anyone know why that might be? The new computer recognizes the ipod and I can see everything on it, change settings, etc. it just won't charge. Is there a reason as to why this should be happening?

Just bought a refurbished 2nd generation ipod
shuffle. I am running the very latest version of OS X
and iTunes on an iBook G3 600 mhz with the slower USB
ports, not 2.0 ports. The ipod mounts and is
regognized by itunes, but I cannot seem to register
the ipod from itunes, it always has an error message
when I submit to register (all forms are filled out
correctly). The registration window in iTunes shows
that this ipod is formatted for Windows (from the
previous owner I assume) and may be causing my
    problems?
No. ALL shuffles are FAT32 format.
The other problem is that it will not sync and
transfer any music from itunes library. I am trying
to transfer simple mp3 files that should be compliant
with the ipod specs. No luck even after multiple
restarts on the ipod. Any help would be appreciated!
    Thank you.

  • My ipod isn't charging with the ihome, but is with the usb cable?

I can charge my i-pod with the usb cable, but two days ago, it stopped connecting to my i-home dock.  my i-phone still docks to it, i don't know what happened.  please help.

Make sure the iPod is full seated in the dock
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.

  • ITunes recognizes iPod but not music

Since I downloaded iTunes 7.3.0.54, it recognizes my iPod but does not show any music. However, it shows that the iPod disk space is 3/4 full but it's classified as "other data." Is there any other way to get that music to appear? I'm trying to avoid doing a restore if at all possible.

I had this same problem and just got off the phone with Apple Support. She told me that I'm out of luck, I should have backed all my files up. Music, photos, whatever. gone. She explained to me its like a mini computer and these things happen. It doesn't matter what generation of ipod you have. So now I have to start from the beginning and will now archive all files. I know this is not the news you wanted to hear but maybe you can sleep tonight!
