Computers Greyed-Out in Qadministrator

I'm trying to set up a managed cluster.
I followed the instructions in the Distributed Processing Setup.pdf.
I also looked at this article which has a pretty straightforward explanation:
http://www.macworld.com/2006/01/secrets/marcchreateside/index.php
When I open Qadministrator, I see the two iMacs but they are greyed out. I am unable to drag them from the "Qmaster Service Browser" area to the "Services" area.
Here is a screenshot:

Anyone have any ideas?
Many thanks in advance.

    # Question
I have 3 computers and one has the "clear search history" line greyed out. I can't get this to work.

Is Tools > Options > Privacy > History: "Remember search and form history" enabled?
If that is disabled then there is nothing saved and nothing to delete.<br />
You still see suggestions in the drop down list if showing suggestions is enabled.

  • Trying to share ethernet over WiFi but connection options are greyed out?

Newby question: I have a Mac Mini 2GHz C2D running OS 10.5.5. I am connected to the internet using my cable modem. When I use the Sharing system preferences control to establish Internet Sharing the boxes with "Share your connection from" and the box with "To computers using" are greyed out.
I'm fairly certain that the wifi card is working because I can see my neighbors wifi network. Also, a friends ITouch can see my computer and it even asks for and validates the password I established, it just can't access the internet.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I am running 10.5.5 so that's not the issue. Also the Internet Sharing has been unlocked the entire time. I tried locking and then unlocking unlocking it (had to enter my admin password) and it didn't change anything.
    Still confused.
Could the issue be related to other network settings such as network name, location settings, order of the internet and WiFi on the network control panel, etc.?
As I noted earlier you are running an old version of Leopard, so what I have may not be the same as what you have.

  • HT5361 I have Snow Leopard on my late model IMac. I downloaded Mountail Lion and paid for it from the Mac Store. It will not install. It takes me through several pages and then button to install is greyed out. A message that this disc is used for Time Mac

I have a late mode IMac 27" running Snow Leopard. I downloaded Mountain Lion from the Apple Store and paid for it. When I trie to install it took me through the first few pages of installation such as agrreeing to terms and the Lion Page showed up asking where I wanted to intall Mountain Lion. The install button was greyed out. I also had a message this disc is used for Time Machine. I had no other disc to choose from. Time Mahine was in the OFF position. I tried hooking up an external drive and tried using it as th Time Machine Backup. That did not work and it also said this disc is used by Time Machine. I have read of several other cases like this but have found no solution other than doinh a complee wipe of the hard drive and doing a reinstall which I really want to avoid if I can.

Look at the root of your hard drive for a folder called Backups.backupdb.
Or, a sparse bundle disk image for one of mobile computers that might have tried to back up to your Mac.
If you have those, remove them and try again.

    Sincerly AppleNoob92
p.s i have no experience in apple imac's at all never used before, but im kinda windows nerd so computers i understand but this imac make my insane, cant seem to find any solutions anywhere on the WWW....

Your HD may be crashed, so you probably should use the oringinal install discs to run Apple Hardware Test in extended mode. If error codes appear this confirms a hardware failure. In addition you cannnot repair the HD using Disk Utility from the startup disk, you have to use the origninal Install discs that shipped with the computer or the most up-to-date version of OS X on a disc that you have.

  • Service nodes are greyed out

I am trying to create a cluster between my i5 iMac and my MBP.
I am following the instructions in the manual but when i get the the last part, after creating a cluster where I am supposed to drag service nodes in from the bottom of the Apple Qadministrator panel I can't do it because the services nodes are greyed out (see image).  Any thoughts?  Thanks all!

Hi - I eventually figured this one out.  Took a while!
In the dialog where you set up the original 'service nodes' on the client machines (where you go Apple QMaster > Share this computer) there is a checkbox 'Require this service to only be used in Managed Clusters'.  It seemed bad to be so I didn't check it.  Nothing in the instructions says to.  But you must.
Once you do this, the service lines all magically go black, and you can drag them by their header up to the box.
It then all worked fine for me, but only for jobs loaded via compressor.
So far no-one has confirmed the bug I noted that jobs I enter into compressor and send to a cluster work reliably, but this does not happen when from within FCPX I try to do the Export > Send to Compressor and choose a cluster.
If you could let me know how this goes I'd be grateful.
    Chris.
PS - I think at this stage that just about no-one in the whole world is actually trying to do any of this.  Must just be us two.  :-)

  • Greyed out "locked" button/ strange behaviour

anyone got any idea why virtually all my files and folders have the "locked" button greyed out? (g4 under osx 10.3.9). even if i make a brand new folder it's lock is greyed out (i thought it might have been a permissions conflict from copying stuff from other computers/ drives at first, but it seems that now this function is simply unavailable. the permissions all look ok (i am the owner of the files/ folders, i have read & write access, as do all groups and users. i have a great freeware application called File Examiner that will over-ride any permissions and that will sort out any essential files, but it is just plain wierd that when i am the owner i can't perform this simple function. is it advisable to repair permissions on the whole computer or is there some risk involved? bearing in mind that i have 1200mb of external drive storage (mainly music stuff). i have selected the main folder on some of the drives and changed every permission to Read & Write and then clicked "apply to enclosed items" and that made no difference (although it did correctly change the permissions)
These same folders have been copied to another drive downstairs, attached to a mac mini (under tiger). this has resulted in another strange problem whereby my music library behaves like it is locked and won't let me move files/ folders around. The "locked" button on the folders is actually available (which is strange as they were copied from the 10.3.9/g4 with the grey "locked" buttons), but not selected. i "solved" this problem by clicking it on, then off again.
    something wierd is happening. help

thanks again for your help & patience - much appreciated
my os is exactly the same as the one you described [Mac OS x 10.3.9 (7W98), Darwin 7.9.0.
however, that menu item is definately nowhere to be found...i know the menu you are describing as i use it all the time, but i don't remember ver having seen this "file util" option.
i am slightly concerned as i'm wondering whether this has something to do with another issue i'm having: i have built a music library on various external drives connected to my g4/panther. when i connect a drive to my intel mac mini (tiger 10.4.10) and delete files/ folders they still show up in searches afterwards (in spotlight, or using the search bar in the finder) - however, it shows up with a blank icon, uses zero k, does not give any location, is "read only", and if you double-click it a message comes up saying that it is an alias and the original can no longer be found. it then gives me the 3 options usually associated with a broken alias - "delete", "fix alias" or "ok". none of these achieve anything. it is like it has retained a "ghost" of the deleted file. as you can imagine this could gradually become ridiculous as searching will show endless nonsence that no longer really exists.
never seen anything like it. if i create and delete a file or folder on the same drive from the mac mini things behave as normal....it just happens with data written to the drives when connected to the g4/panther
conversely, if i reconnect the drive to the g4 and search for any of these "ghost" files it does not find them.
i also had a brief period the other day where i couldn't move anything around in my root "mp3 library" folder on a drive connected to the mac mini (as if my root "mp3 library" folder was locked or read only - niether of which were indicated). i eventuallly "solved" it by locking the root "mp3 library" (under "get info"....by god! it actually works in tiger!) and then unlocking it again. maybe, due to the wierdness gong on with the greyed out 'locked" folders coming across from panther, tiger saw them as locked when they wern't.
sorry to ramble on but this is bending my mind
some very strange things going on

  • EPT on New project option at project center are all Greyed out

    Hello,
We have a problem with only 2 users within the PWA. They can not create new projects. When they click the New button on the project center, all EPTs are gray.
We think it was a issue with the permissions. So, we removed all the groups from the users and assign again, but the problem persisted. For other users with the same permission there are no problems.
Furthermore, we tested with the same user on other computers, and the problem persists. We believe it's tied to the user.
We are using Project Server 2010.
If more information is needed, please let me know.
    Tks!

    Hi Alessandro,
If it was an issue about the permissions, the "new" button would be greyed out preventing users to click on it and seeing the EPT list. If they can click on "new" but only the EPTs are greyed out, then it is another issue..
Are the users part of a department? Have you associated EPT with departments?
    Hope this helps,

  • Changing the Computer Name... when it's greyed out in the Sharing Prefs?

    Okay, here's a weird one.
Using Carbon Copy Cloner 3, I recently cloned the hard drive on my iBook G4 (OS X 10.5.4)—it was dying and I needed to swap in a new one. I made the swap, using the cloned version of my old drive, and everything was wonderful.
The new drive is great. The only artifact of the change is that when I see my iBook on a network, instead of the original computer name (let's call it +David's iBook+ for argument's sake), I get +David's iBook_1+. When I go to the Sharing Preferences pane, in the field where I should get my good old iBook's name, I get that _1 tacked on again, and instead of being able to edit it, the name is greyed out!
The hostname is fine. I can edit that. But the computer name refuses to be changed by any of the normal methods. I could probably go into Terminal and edit the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurations/preferences.plist file. But I get the feeling that there's something else going on here.
    Any thoughts?
(I'm now wishing I'd just restored using Time Machine. Old habits die hard.)

Thanks! I should have mentioned that I'd already tried that. Several times. There are no other computers with the same name as mine on either my home or office network.
I can click on the "Edit" button and change the name to "David.local" or whatever, and it'll stay that way—but it doesn't show up on the LAN. When I look for the computer over the network—either using Bonjour or the Apple-K command in the Finder—it shows up with its old name. If I try to connect with "David.local" (or whatever), I get an error saying the server can't be found.
Since posting, I've also tried logging in as the root user and changing it there. No dice.
I had to replace the hard drive (the reformatting that caused me to clone the disk in the first place turned out not to solve the problem, which was that the hard drive was failing); for a week I was using an external drive clone as the startup disk for my iMac. It let me change the name there just as it should have. No more +David's iBook_1+. Woohoo!
But when I copied the disk back onto my brand new internal drive... There it was again. Greyed out. Can't get at it.
    Grrrrrr.
Again, it's not a big deal; I want to change the name so that it fits the naming convention at my office. But it's really bugging me! (Obviously.)
I suppose I could reinstall and migrate the accounts and apps over....

  • Ipod music greyed out?

I'm trying to add songs to my wife's ipod. (It looks like a nano, how do I tell which generation?)
A while back we swapped computers. But we'd synced and updated this laptop and ipod with no problem (same music on all.)
Now I've added new songs to the laptop itunes. The songs are mp4, not copy protected, and play fine on the laptop.
I connected the ipod and hit sync. Then when I open itunes>her ipod>music, all titles are greyed out, and the new artist or songs are not added (either there or when I eject the ipod & check it's own screen.)
    thanks

    Hello anotherjones,
This article should help you identify which iPod model your wife owns.
    [Identifying iPod models|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353]
As to the songs being greyed out, this is because the iPod is tied to another iTunes library on a seperate computer. The only way the songs wouldn't be grayed out and you could add songs to it from a second computer is if you are manually managing the music on your iPod. You can check to see if this option is enabled under the Summary tab for the iPod in iTunes.
Here are two helpful articles on manually managing music and syncing an iPod to multiple computers.
[Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535]
    [Using iPod with multiple computers|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202]
Otherwise, in order to sync it to this new library, you will have to restore the iPod via iTunes and start over from scratch with it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Screen sharing greyed out - Airport Extreme

    Hello all:
I'm trying to use screen sharing with another mac but my screen sharing option is greyed out. The setup is as follows:
    - Computer 1 is a Quad Mac Pro, connected to an Airport Extreme (wireless).
    - Computer 2 is a MacBook Pro (older one, but still plenty fast).
    - Both computers are running iChat 4.0.7 and OSX 10.5.7
I can ask to share Computer 2's screen and am able to view/control their screen without a problem. The problem is I'm unable to share my screen at all (greyed out). I have scoured the web and this forum to see if I can find a solution, but so far no luck.
Here's what I've done so far:
    1. Set Quicktime Streaming to 1.5Mbps on BOTH computers. Restarted iChat.
    2. Connection Doctor/Capabilities shows green checks all the way down.
    3. System Prefs/Security/Firewall: this is set to "access for specific services". In the list, File Sharing and Screen Sharing are both at top. I have also added the iChat application to the list just in case.
    4. System Prefs/Sharing - File Sharing and Screen Sharing are both on.
    5. iChat App: Screen Sharing is enabled here as well.
    6. Both computers are using .MAC (or ME) accounts.
    7. Have checked bandwith and both connections are plenty fast (20 down/8 up)
    8. Airport Extreme on my end set to WPA2 Personal (could this be causing problems)?
I'm at my wit's end, not sure how to proceed. Anyone find a way to fix this? Again, i can screenshare Computer 2 just fine. It's Computer 1 (the faster of the two) that refuses to work.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
From your end you can Offer to Share and Ask to Share (2 options)
The same is true of the Buddy (2 more options)
You only speak of this from one end.
Having said that In the Airport Base Station (Airport Utility) go to the Internet Icon pane and then the the NAT tab and set Port Mapping Protocol to be Enabled (there is no need to set ports)

  • TS1424 When I ave network coverage, my wi if drops out. I am only able to access my music on my phone when I have no network signal, otherwise all songs are greyed out

I can only access my wi if, when I have no network signal. As soon as I move to a better signal area, my wi Di connection drops out.
I have music on my phone, but again, I cannot access this in the gym, when I have a network signal.
I also cannot access some of my apps, as they are greyed out. Please advise

Grey text when you look at the content and a lock symbol at the bottom of the screen just indicates that the iPod is set to sync automatically with iTunes. If you want to connect an iPod to multiple computers, play the iPod songs through iTunes, delete songs from the iPod, drag songs from iTunes, add playlists to the iPod etc. you need to change the update setting to "manually manage songs and videos". The text will change from grey to black and everything will be directly accessible through iTunes:
    Managing content manually on iPod
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something to remember about using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
