  • Computer and iTunes freezes when iPod is plugged in

    Hi there.
I'm using Windows Vista x32 SP1 and lately I've had a problem with my iPod and iTunes. It hasn't always been like this as recently I have been updating my iPod, but for some reason something has caused a problem.
I can use iTunes fine and play songs from it, until I plug in my iPod. When the iPod is plugged in, I can't use anything on iTunes, be it sync, change song, or anything. I can't even access the iTunes screen if I have changed window.
Nor can I access the "Computer" section of my computer, where the "iPod" folder is stored - this freezes up as well.
However, as soon as I unplug the iPod, everything starts working again. However, this means that I can't ever sync, or even fix/scan - because I only get these options AFTER I have unplugged it. I have restarted my computer and reinstalled iTunes, as well as resetting my iPod (pressing the center button and menu) whilst plugged in, and whilst unplugged - all to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have searched through the internet for ages trying to find a solution and I can't seem to find any answers. Thanks!

ANY help would really be appreciated... My iPod is corrupted I think but I can't restore it due to the above problems so everything's going wrong.

  • ITunes crashing when iPod is plugged in, works when iPod is disconnected

Like the title says, iTunes 8 is crashing for me when my iPod is plugged in, but it's working fine when the iPod isn't plugged in.
Earlier today, I upgraded to iTunes 8 and also downloaded the iPod touch update (2.1). I didn't have time for it to install though because I was going to be late for class, so I left the iPod connected, shut the laptop and brought it with me to class. I opened it up when I got there, to see if the installation process would continue, but it didn't... so I did a force quit.
My iPod still works fine, but my iTunes doesn't. I don't know if it was because I did the force quit that made iTunes sucky, but either way, I've tried a bunch of things to fix it.
    1. Reinstall
    2. Disable Last.fm plugin (crash report window said that it could be causing it the crashing)
    3. Reboot into safe mode and reinstall
and there's probably more things I did to try to fix the problem but they didn't work.
    Sooo...
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks much!

I have the same problem: if I load iTunes for a second time and my iPod is plugged in the iTunes app and the system menus (top right corner of screen) freeze up.
Unplugging and plugging in the iPod seems un-freeze everything for me.

  • Itunes freezing when Ipod Classic plugged in

When I plug in my ipod classic 80 gb,itunes freezes (cannot click or play anything) and an error message shows up.
"There is a problem with this drive. Scan the dvice now to fix". Tried that and it doesn't work. It also says my ipod is not responding.
The newest version of itunes is installed and our computer is windows 8.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have looked at lots of other discussions but nothing has helped my problem.
    Thanks!

  • ITunes Freezes when iPod is plugged in

Can anyone help me? I'm about ready to throw both my IPod and computer out the window! Everything has been working fine and all of a sudden, whenever I plug my IPod in, ITunes completely freezes up. As soon as I unplug the IPod, ITunes starts working again.
I have a 30 GB IPod, Windows XP, and ITunes 7.1.1.5. I have tried all of the following: reinstalling ITunes, reinstalling the IPod software, plugging the USB cable into a different port, using a new USB cable. The only thing I haven't done is restore the IPod, and I can't do this because of ITunes freezing every time the IPod is plugged in.
Like I mentioned above, everything was working fine and then all of a sudden this started happening. Has anyone else had this problem? I'd appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

  • Itunes crashes when iPod is plugged in.

So I just got a new iPod, 160GB classic.
It worked fine for a few days (although it prompted me to download itunes 9 which now makes cd ripping take upto 3 hours, but that's another story), I put some of the stuff I already had on my comp onto my iPod.
Yesterday I was asked to download the latest iTunes update, and now that I have (iTunes downloaded and installed it by itself) everytime I plug my iPod in iTunes crashes. iTunes is fine on it's own, but if an iPod is plugged in it just freezes and I have to close it using task manager.
My brother has an iPod classic 120gb which he's had for the last 6 months and he said he's always had this problem, only very occasionally has it actually worked for him (and even today, his iPod only has artists A-C and he can't update any further!).
These were both gifts and we need the problem solving immediately. We're both on different laptops (windows vista) that run fine with no problems regarding memory or anything like that.
    Thanks

I have an iTouch and the same thing happens to the 3 of us here. What wI do to avoid it is to manage your iTunes and all the changes first, THEN plug in your iPod. It doesn't freeze for me then. But, if I plug it in right away, it freezes. Hope this helps for you.

  • Windows Vista Crashing When Ipod is Plugged In. Blue Screen of Death?

A week ago, my computer suddenly started to reboot whenever I plugged my 5th generation 80 gig Ipod in to sync. A blue screen will pop up, and automatically restart.
I do not believe this is the blue screen of death that appeared 2 months ago. I have upgraded to Itunes 8.0.1 when it was first released, and I had no problems until a week ago. I haven't heard of anyone receiving the blue screen of death since the update to Itunes 8 was released.
I have also lost all of my music from my Ipod, so I am anxious to figure this out.
Here is what the blue screen (certain passages paraphrased, the specifics were copied directly):
A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    BADPOOLHEADER
If this is the firs time you've seen this stop error screen, restart yoru computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Make sure all hardware and software is properly installed
If it continues, disable/remove any newly installed hardware and software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shawoding. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 for Advanced Sartup options, then select safe mode.

Any help you have would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried the troubleshooting advice in this article?

Was a file name mentioned in the stop message? usually something.sys That can be a clue to the problem is the Apple advice doesn't help.

  • Itunes 7 won't show songs when Ipod is plugged in.

I used to just plug in my ipod on the old Itunes, click on the "manage manually" button and be able to look at and play (through my computer) all of the songs on my IPOD (My home computer is a separate laptop)
So I downloaded Itunes 7 and when I plug in my IPOD, I can still play songs on my ipod, but that new "ipod summary-version-options" screen is up and I can't get rid of it to see the songs on my IPOD. I can still play the songs, but I can't cycle through the library or pick and specific ones.
Its probably something simple but does any know how to fix this?
    thanks

click the little triangle next to the ipod in the source list. when that is pointing down, you'll see "Music" and a list of playlists on the ipod. click on one of those to show the contents of the ipod, or the contents of a playlist on the ipod.

  • Songs won't authorize, but only when iPod is plugged in

I have no problem playing purchased music on my computer (Windows XP, latest iTunes software), but when I plug in my iPod, I get a “This computer is no longer authorized to play purchased items that are on the iPod” message with a “Would you like to authorize this computer?” When I say yes and enter my password, it says that “This computer is already authorized” but then promptly repeats the “This computer is no longer authorized…” message – basically, it’s caught in a loop. My iPod will not update, not even for playlists or music from CDs.
I have not changed my user account, I don’t plug in my iPod to any other computers, and I went ahead and uninstalled/rebooted/reinstalled iTunes several times, as well as tried the removed of the SC Info folder, deauthorized/reauthorized my computer (also many times).
Note that the loop only occurs when my iPod is trying to sync: it fails to sync because of the loop, but purchased music plays just fine on my PC (assuming that the iPod isn’t trying to sync).
    Any suggestions/solutions?

Thanks - that didn't solve it but pointed me in the right direction. Turns out way back in the day when Windows was reinstalled on my PC, the drive letters were all screwed up...so my iPod kept showing up as the C: drive. Once I changed that manually, everything worked just fine.

  • CPU (HP-W.XP) freezes only when Ipod is plugged in through USB

I have read a good deal of posts that tackle the issue of the Itunes(V7) freeze, yet allowing the user to navigate around the rest of the screen.
I am having the full problem. The entire computer freezes the second I plug the Ipod in.
    This has happened with:
-Itunes already opened prior to insertion.
    -With Itunes closed.
The ipod (60g Video btw)does charge and information is not lost, but this of course negates the option to add podcasts and such, or use my laptop when it is inserted. In addition when the ipod is disconnected I am again able to navigate. This is spec an ipod issue as far as I am able to tell.
So, has anyone had this problem?
I will probably revert to an older version if I must.
    Suggestions?

I was really really hoping that your solution would
work. Thank you for the idea. But alas, no, it still
    has not corrected the problem.
Odd, but after leaving the iPod attached all night
(still using 7.0.2) none of the 21 gigs was copied to
the iPod except 1 episode of a podcast.
So it is still stuttering, and still "not responding"
with 7.0.0. Plus, even though I restored my iPod, it
did not ask or give me the opportunity to rename the
iPod after the restore. Should I try to reinstall
from the original cd? and then run iPod update from
the summary screen or try to find iPod updater
somewhere on the web? My 30g ipod is just ablut 1
year old and needed updating as soon as I bought it.
Any thoughts would be greatly appriciated before my
black iPod becomes an expensive hockey puck!
Have you tried removing your podcast subscriptions?
I was reading other posts that explained that "mad money" and otther various podcasts caused itunes/cpu to crash.
Rather than that, the process above is what provided my remedy.

  • Computer wont detect hardware when ipod is plugged in

I just got a brand new Ipod nano for my birthday and it has never worked on my computer, I have installed the software and uninstalled it many times, I've done all of the "5 r's" , and no matter what I do, my computer won't detect the hardware. Although, it does charge when I plug it in. My brother has an Ipod mini and my computer detects his. Also, when I plug my Ipod Nano into his computer it is detected.
When I am asked to restart my computer after I install the software, a blue screen comes up that says:
    Stop: C000021a
    Fatal System Error
The Windows Logon Proces terminated unexpectedly with a status of
    0xc0000005
The system has been shut down.
I've been working on this for a few days and I still can't seem to get it to work. So frusterated!

  • Opening iTunes when iPod is plugged in

iTunes won't start when I plug in the iPod nano to the computer. When i go to manualy open iTunes a message appears saying: "another user on this computer is using the iPod softwear, so iTunes is unable to communicate with this iPod. Please ask the other user to log out". I can use iTunes after this message appears but I cannot load songs onto the iPod, the little picture of the iPod isn't there. I'm the only one on this computer who even has an iPod or software open. What can I do to change this from happening?

    Hello carolinous,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There may be something in this article that may help:
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes
Hmmm... maybe you should try this first:
    \Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
Then restart the ipod service under your name.

  • Computer restarts when ipod is plugged in

    Hey!
I just bought new 30g video ipod but now when i plug it in to my PC, blue screen appears and PC crashes. I have tried to reinstall all ipod software, format my pc and tried different USB ports and none of these worked.
Here's some blue screen messages i've got, if they help to solve what might be the problem:

One guess is that you have either a faulty cable or a fault in the iPod itself, in either case, causing a momentary short of the +5V of the USB line which may be causing a power fault/glitch on the computer. If you had another cable you could try, that would be one thing. Another thing is to take your iPod and cable to another computer and see if plugging it in does the same thing. You might try a couple different computers in case some are more resistance to USB power glitches than others.

Have you tried another USB port (especially one on the back of the computer)?
Have you rebooted the machine recently?
Have you tried another USB cable?
Have you tried connecting the iPod to another computer?
Post back with your answers and I'll do my best to help!

  • Help new itunes upgrade won't open even when ipod is plugged in

Ok so evey time I click on the itunes icon in my start menu or plug in my ipod my computer makes that thinking noise they usually make when opening something and then nothing happens. I've also tried going into the itunes folder and clicking on files there and putting a cd in at which point no announcement comes up anymore asking me what I want the computer to do with it.
I don't know what to do and it's really frustrating! Please if anyone can help that would be hugely appreciated.

+I upgraded and now iTunes does not appear to open at all. The problem is error message free, like the original poster the outcome is the same if I use the icons on my desktop/start menu or click on the exe in the program folder. When I view the task manager it does not appear on the applications tab but Itunes.exe is a process on the process tab which can not be terminated (again with no error messages).+
That "itunes.exe process that will not die" is a familiar symptom ... What make and model of firewall are you running? Is it *Norton Internet Security 2005* by any chance?
I also just upgraded, itunes does not run, itunes.exe process comes up. I can end it though. Quicktime works, I also tried the 7.2 downgrade for quicktime also. I just uninstalled mcaffee, and also tried the msconfig troubleshooting, still no dice. I want the new ipod touch update, but I cant get it.
