Comuter shut down too soon when not in use.
My computer shuts down temporality in just a few minutes when not in use. How can I change the time to a different setting?
Can you please post this type of question over at
http://answers.microsoft.com/? This would be the appropriate location.
Thanks!

Should I shut down my computer when not in use
should I shut down my computer when not in use, overnight for instance?
Hello! Leaving it on 24/7/365 is perfectly acceptable. You may save some electricity but personally I think you'll pay for it with a more troublesome system. I do however set the monitors to go to sleep. I like the no startup lag time of running 24/7/365. That said, if I lived in an area prone to electrical outages or if my location was prone to lightening strikes I'd probably shut it down and unplugged. Of course with it being unplugged the pram battery may run down. These old G4's have been running 24/7/365 for years now. I do try to restart every few weeks just for good measure! In the end it's your preference. The hardware works best when a constant temperature is maintained. Tom

IMac (Oct 2009) keeps shutting down and restarting when not being used.
At least once a day, usually when not being used, I will see a dialog box that say computer had to restart due to a problem. data in problem report does not clearly state problem - many multi-page entries
Have reinstalled OS 10.8.2 once
this morning tried to restart with safe boot and had spinning beach ball for more than 15 minutes. shut down and restarted nin recovery mode. verified and repaired permissions (all seem to be related to Canon Pronter plug-ins- had an error message yesteday asking if I wanted to repair printer software and I said yes). Printer seems to be working. Had one statement that indicated a screensaver issue-see below
a while back, iTunes album art screensaver hung up with just two album covers flipping in all rows and columns.
after a few restarts, it started working correctly again..- yesterday I set screen saver to never, but still had a crash this morningHere's the latest panic report. BTW, I ran for a while from an external system boot - very sloww (thumbdrive), but nothing happened. However, when I retarted I tried to restart in Safe Mode and the launch never completed (30 minutes without start)

Hp envy phoenix 810 shuts down by itself when not in use
I purchased a HP Envy Phoenix 810 December 2013 and use Windows 8 365 on it. This is a home computer and is used for general purposes - no gameing, etc. It will just shut itself down when we are not using it for awhile, but not on a consistent basis. For example, early Sunday it had shut itself down sometime, I started it in the morning, and twice more it shut itself down through the day. I finally turned it back on Monday afternoon, and it stayed on through the evening and night, and it was still on Tuesday morning. I can't seem to find a pattern to when it decides to shut down. I've run Norton, Malwarebytes, Superantivirus and haven't found anything. I have the same computer & software (Norton, Microsoft 365) at work and haven't had a problems with it. I've updated it with HP's updates. Any suggestions?
Usually when a computer shuts down it is because of an overheat problem but doubtful it it is a idle. Be sure that it is no near any heat source and that the fans are clean with no obstructions and use a can of air to clean the inside of the computer.
Another cause is the power supply, either the PSU is faultering or the wall socket may be getting some interupts. Worth checking out.
Have a look at your power settings in the Control Panel, see this site:

Please mark my post as SOLVED if it has resolved your problem. It helps others with similar situations. -
My ext HDs spin too hard when not in use , how do I slow em up ?
some externals have the smarts about them but others just wizz too hard when not in use , old macs had a processor setting I could change , but not MBP
I should be able to tell these HDs to chill till I call on them right ? thanks for any help[ you can offer me .
cheers RYou don't. You have no control over the spin rate of any hard drive.
To encourage the external drive(s) to spin down when they aren't in use, System Prefs > Energy Saver > check the box for "Spin down hard disks when possible." But you'll find that the OS checks in on those drives quite frequently, spinning them back up again. So the likelihood of their spinning down very often or ever staying quiescent for long is small. -
Having problems with phone getting too hot when not in use
Hi there -- I'm trying to figure out what I can do to fix this. Recently I had to get a replacement S3 because my original shut off mid-use and wouldn't turn back on. The replacement has been here for about a month and in the last 2 weeks I'm having issues with it getting too hot. The first time it happened, I had it plugged into the stock charger for about 1 1/2 hours - and I had picked it up expecting it to be fully charged but it was extremely hot and had a warning on the main screen saying that the battery was critically hot and was not charging and the phone was nearly completely dead. I unplugged it, took the battery out and let the main phone body cool down. After about 15 minutes, the body felt like room temperature again, so I put it all back together. It turned on, charged normally that night and all was well.
Now for the last several days, I'm having issues again with it getting hot at random times when I'm not even using it (and not charging it). The last time, I downloaded a temperature app and it said the phone was nearly 105 degrees, and it felt the hottest right at the home button. Later that night after it cooled down, I noticed that the battery wasn't charging at all and was depleting rapidly on the charger. I restarted twice with no change and then took the battery out and let it sit for several minutes. After that it began charging again.
With it getting hot so much more often now, I'm starting to worry about this happening when I need my phone for an emergency as I spend a lot of time on the road transporting my kids to school and activities. Is there a fix for this? It doesn't appear to be the battery because my husband and I have the same phone and I've already swapped batteries with him - same issue for me, no issue for him. Please help? Thanks!Hello Micheliu813, let's get to the bottom of this together! Are you using the same charger that came with the phone or a 3rd party charger? We can also test the phone in safe mode to see if the device heats up again. Check here for steps: http://vz.to/1kb9LUM

I just phoned up apple technical support and asked if i could get a repair.
I explained my problem to them. It shuts down too early, when the battery gets from about a half to a third full, it can just randonly shut down even though there is enough power left in it. It will turn on and play again if you reset it about 6 billion times.
Anyhow he asked me the play time of the ipod mini 2nd gen. He said that any ipod that played for at least 50% of the actual time would be considered a fully working ipod. I then asked him if i got a playtime of over 9 hours and then it switched off saying that there was no battery power remaining would the ipod be considered defective. He said no. WHAT so what apple saying is that if i get 9 hours and then it swithes off after that even though the battery isn't really empty, this is a fully working ipod. What is this.
I could get over 9 hours of continous playback from my ipod but then if it switches off early, this is fine. NO IT ISN'T APPLE.
Can someone help me or make a comment please.
P.S. I have already tried updating and downgrading firmware and resetting and restoring several times. I have also recalibrated the battery nothing works it will still switch off early. It has also been in for a repair before but they sent it back to me without fixing it.

Okay. That makes good sense.

If you are getting 9 hours it is NOT switching off early. It is switching off early if it gets less than ~5 hours. -
when deleting find i phone app i erased my apple id and since then my phone shut down as soon as it is opened what can i do ?
Do the following:
Make sure you are signed into iMessage and FaceTime with your current ID. If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.) Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID). Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your device). -

Hello, I am running Mac os 10.6.8. It is shutting down without warning when I walk away from the computer for about 5 minutes. It happened twice. It was not asleep, i had to turn the computer back on...Any ideas...

The next time the problem happens, note the date and time the problem occurred, then go to Applications/Utilities/Console and copy the log starting at the time of the crash. Paste the log in a reply. Please do not use a screen shot as they can be hard to read. If there are repeated runs of the same messages, please post only one run. Be selective about what you post and don’t post huge amounts. Make sure there is no personal data visible. Information learned from Linc Davis. -
My computer had to be shut down this morning when I could move my mouse around but it would not respond when I double clicked on an item to select. Now I cannot open a file in my finder window by double clicking on it. Any suggestions?
Did you reinstall CS3 after CC?
For that matter, doing an in-place upgrade on the OS is always a gamble with Adobe programs. Reinstalling all the versions you need, in order, would probably solve your problem.
And you shouldn't need to save as IDML after opening the .inx in CC. -

Sorry, there is no feature for that built into Firefox, and I haven't seen an add-on to add that feature to Firefox.

Mac OSX 10.6.8 Should I keep it in sleep mode when not in use to shut down?
My experience with electronic tends to revolve around thermo stress, and removing all power vs going to sleep tends to be more or less the same. Many components have power totally taken away, and others use so little power they cool off.
However, I found thermo stress occurs a lot more with discrete electronic components (like back in the '80s and our VAX-11/780's which had lot more discrete components) and less with integrated circuits. NOTE: I'm not talking about overheating components, just normal heating/cooling cycles.
All in all I would not worry about it. The OP (Grace 1) should use whatever method is most convent for her. And I would say if she is using a Macbook Air or the new Macbook Pro Retna display (or any other Mac with a solid state drive (SSD)), then booting from shutdown may not take all that long anyway. -
Imac shuts down when not in use
I purchased my 21.5" imac July 9, 2011 with Snow Leopard. No problems for 1 month. Then about August 12th or so, my imac started to mysteriously "shut down" when not in use. I'll be working on it, then get up to go pour myself a cup of coffee or something...then I come back to my computer that has now shut off. It is NOT asleep...it is OFF. So I turn it back on and it is fine. This has happened a few times now within a week. Anyone else have this problem?
By the way, I am now running Lyon, as of August 18th. When the imac shut down, I was usually viewing photos or on the web.
thanks!First thing I would try is to reset the SMC, it can help with power related problems. Shut down the Mac and unplug everything including the power. Press and hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Plug in the computer but be careful not to press the power button as you are plugging it in. Wait a few seconds and turn it on. Hopefully it won't happen again. There is always Apple Support. Don't let the problem persist until your free phone tech support has expired (3 months). I would also recommend using the iMac with an UPS, and at the very least, a high quality surge protector.
If you have MS Word or a similar word processor you could try enabling the autosave feature and set it to 1 minute intervals. Keep a document open and if you come back to the computer and it has shut down, you can look at the last time the document was updated and know what time the comptuer turned itself off. It could be useful in diagnosing the problem. -
IPhone 3g shuts down randomly when not in use.
I'm running iOS 4.0 on my iPhone 3G, which I bought used. It shuts down by itself randomly when not in use a few times a day. It never shuts down when in use or when plugged in. I've seen other posts on something similar but no solution. Please help
I have a similar problem, it shuts down, when it's locked, it shut's down, when im using a aplication, it shut's down when im not using it, it's shuts down when it's even plugged in, some say it can be the battery but i dont think so.
