when upgrading to mavericks, on occasion my macbook pro retina freezes when using the trackpad, it shows more often when entering the launchpad, it does not go completely freezes in the middle of the open windows and the launchpad (must go out and do the gesture again to enter the launchpad), and the launchpad to move from one space to another is exactly the same, it stays in the middle and you have to re-do the gesture on the trackpad to successfully pass from one space to another .
the funny thing is that when I use launcher dock does not happen, go to the launchpad fluently.

I was just watching / streaming TV off Safari on my actual TV.
I'm using a Mini-Display Port to HDMI cable for the connection to the external display.
Software update popped-up and said there was an update for Java and for SMC.
I ran the update and upon the computer restarting, my external display (my TV) is no longer working. It is now flickering.
It won't work in Mirroring or set up as an extended display.
I've reset SMC / PRAM / Safe Mode / Even restored from a Time Machine backup (From before the updates were done).
What could it be?!I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it. Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there. The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple. They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one. From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate. And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one. Try a new one. Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port. -
Macbook pro thunderbolt to Imac Mini Display Port
Hello everyone,
As the title above says I would like to use my Imac (27 inch, Late 2009) as a moniter for my Macbook Pro ( 15 inch, Early 2011). As you may know Macbook Pro has a Thunderbolt port on it and I was wondering if it is compatable to go to my Imac's Mini Display port?
Thunderbolt > Mini Display Port ( Use as moniter not data trasnfer )
If anyone can sheed some light on this area I would be very thankful!
Cgrichyrichdsimagry, Mark wasn't asking about a Mid 2011 iMac, he was asking about a mid 2010 iMac with a 2011 MBP. That link is not applicable.
Mark, I have a similar setup (same iMac, 2012 MBP with thunderbolt) and have been working on it for a while. While the Thunderbolt ports are supposedly backwards compatible with the Mini DisplayPort interface, a bunch of reading (and an experimental purchase (and subsequent return) of a $70 Thunderbolt cable to try it out) indicates that you can't do that with a Thunderbolt cable but that a Mini DisplayPort <--> Mini DisplayPort cable should work.
As I'm in Canada, it's been a right pain to get one of those (less selection on our Amazon than yours) but I finally got one and only just tried it out this morning. It _DOES_ work, but there are some display refresh/jaggies issues on the iMac. I don't know if that's maybe because the MBP is running on battery at the moment & doesn't have enough power to consistently drive the larger display or whether there's something else wrong, but I'll be spending the remainder of my long weekend trying to figure that out. The issue is that any mouse movement on the screen causes bands of what looks like loss of frame sync 'static'.
I'll let you know here if what I eventually figure out. On the up side, this is by FAR the closest I've gotten so far. -
One day when using my duel display the second monitor decided it wouldn't display at full resolution in the middle of doing something i was confused. I use a mini display to hdmi then hdmi to the second monitor. I thought maybe the converter or cable died. I bought another another mini display to hdmi and tried another hdmi cord and the same issue. My roommate has macbook pro as well so i decided to see if it was the monitor, when i pluged the mini display converter into his and used the external monitor it displayed perfectly not below resolution. Doing this I knew it was not the monitor or the mini display to hdmi or the hdmi cable. I took it into the genuis bar assuming now that it was my grapics card or logic board. When the genuis went to duel screen it on a cinema display it displayed perfectly. So went home tried to duel screen it again and still not displaying at full resolution. That is where I am stuck, in summary:
My screen used to display perfect resolution on a second monitor and suddenly did not.
Tested two mini display to hdmi and hdmi cords both were fine.
Tested to see if monitor was issue but displayed perfectly when i used roommates laptop.
Went to genius bar and displayed perfectly on second monitor so it can display perfect resolution on apples monitors but will not do so anymore on my monitor, even though roommates macbook pro will display perfect resolution on my monitor.
I am beyond confused.Apparently you have tried everything except - take the monitor in question to the Apple Store along with your computer. If it works there, the mystery continues.

hi, i have a late 2008 15 inch macbook pro, which have a mini display port.
I noticed that thunderbolt and mini display port looks a like. So, my question is :
can i connect thunderbolt duo hard drive to the mini display port of a late 2008 macbook pro which do not have thunderbolt port, but have mini display port.
thank youken94538,
no, you’d need a Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter or Thunderbolt-to-USB adapter to be able to access your Thunderbolt hard drive from your 2008 MacBook Pro. -

First... Check here to see if your Mac is compatible...
http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
If so... would recommend at least 4GB of RAM... if not 8 GB
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
See Here > OWC RAM > http://www.macsales.com
The above site also has videos on how to Install RAM should you need it...
Also... Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...

NOTE that Rosetta is no longer supported in Mavericks, Mountain Lion and Lion.
It is both Prudent and Recommended to Backup Before any Major Update or Upgrade.

When installing Maverick on my 17" Macbook pro I got the message that my HD was damaged and couldn't be repaired. (not good news!!) I now can't restart without returning to the Maverick setup and therefore returning to the same message. How do I abort the Maverick installation so that I can try to return to the previous OS so that I can try to recover/repair the HD
I have the same problem with my 2008 MacBook. Repair disk from disk utility says it was successful but the installer thinks it's groundhog day after a reboot. I also tried fsck -fy after booting in to a command mode and it came back clean but again the installer gives the same error message. It seems like a bit is stuck somewhere indicating my HD is bad when it isn't.
I had the latest version of Mountain Lion and have applied every upgrade up to then without issue.
Anyone find a solution yet without having to erase the entire disk and staring over?
Attached is a screen shot of the error. -
Have just installed Mavericks and restarted the MacBook Pro. That was 3 hours ago and after logging in, I got my wallpaper and dock, but none of my desktop icons, just the spinning coloured wheel. It's been like that for 2 hours. Is this normal? What should I do, please?
I tried holding the on/off switch down to make it shut down, but when I turned it back on again, the same thing happened and none of the keys etc makes any difference.
HELP!!!! Please. No, what you're experiencing is not normal.
Try booting whilst holding down the Shift key - this will allow you to boot into Safe Mode, disabling third-party kernel extensions, etc. Your Mac will be slow to boot and will operate sluggishly. That's normal. If you can get in using Safe Mode then you have some start-up item that doesn't play well with Mavericks.

Maverick has given my MacBook Pro a stroke
Maverick has given my MacBook Pro a stroke. One command takes 10-20 seconds to "register". Pages take minutes to load. Spinning color wheel nearly constant.
First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -
If I download Maverick on a 17" Macbook pro i-core 7 thats 3.5 years old Will it still sync with my i-Pad that was purchased on 11/30/2010
with Serial# GB*******Z38?
<Edited by Host>I am having this EXACT SAME ISSUE.
I had just sent in my MacBook Pro 1,2 for repairs, and Depot replaced my Main Logic Board. Windows and my x1600 worked before the repair. It makes perfect sense that a replacement of the logic board would throw stuff off like this; however, I don't see why this is an error of such a grandeur.
Now, to my dismay, my ATi x1600 doesn't want to work in Windows: It's a driver issue that I, quite franky, feel that Apple doesn't care about. I took it to a 'Genius' Bar, and they told me the usual, « It's Boot Camp, we don't support the drivers. »
The only way to get it to "work" is if I disable all hardware acceleration, thus disabling DirectX: That means no games, no Adobe Premier, and no software that I use for my school.
Pfft, I'm sending my computer back for the 3rd time within two months ... I doubt they're going to do anything ... -
I'm struggling to install Mavericks onto my 2009 MacBook Pro
I'm struggling to install Mavericks onto my 2009 MacBook Pro. I need it to upgrade to Lightroom 5. After several attempts it won't make it beyond the middle of the blue activity monitor. The message went almost immediately from 41 minutes remaining to "Time remaining: Completing Installation... Your computer will restart automatically". The Installer Log just lists line after line of "Missing Core Services". This is now the third time it's reach this state. Athe blue line just stops right below the "i" in "Macintosh HD". Should I let it sit? Or turn it off for a few hours? Advice is nice. And thanks.
You haven't provided enough information to go further. You just wanted to know if you should turn it off. But at whatever point you are at I don't know what you were upgrading, if you had downloaded the 5.3 GB Mavericks installer or an updater, can you boot the computer now. I don't know if you meet all the requirements to install Mavericks. Lightroom requires 10.7, not 10.9.
So, when you can give me more to go on, perhaps I could help. -
Why won't OS X Mavericks download on my MacBook Pro?
I'm having trouble downloading OS X Mavericks on my new MacBook Pro. Can anyone help me out?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you have got a Late 2013 MacBook Pro, the OS X Mavericks version available in the Mac App Store is not compatible with your Mac, so you cannot download OS X Mavericks. Until your Mac uses the same Mavericks version as all other Macs, you will not be able to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store.
You can reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 -

HT201364 Downloading OS X Mavericks to a 2008 MacBook Pro
When I attempt to download OS X Mavericks to my (2008) MacBook Pro, I'm told that I do not have enough room and must remove items from my start-up menu. How do I go about that and what do I remove?
Throw away files and apps that you no longer need or use and empty the Trash. Another method is to buy an external drive and move your largest Libraries (iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie) onto it and then delete them from the internal drive.
Mavericks needs 8GB's of free space to be installed. -

I did the SMC reset and that did shut down the computer (did not notice if the power adaptor lite blinked) when pushed power button (after waiting approx. 30sec.) to see if computer would display same message -- it did! Here is report:
