Conacts appear as numbers not names

When notificatiion of texts appear the Conact it comes from appear as numbers not names
Any thoughts?

Had same problem and was able to restore names in the text message by going to Settings> Mail, Contacts, Calendars> then change Default Account to iCloud.

I have noticed that if you go to the edit button, and if you haven't deleted any of the texts from that number.>tick Edit> tick on one of the texts circles> Delete it> Scroll up to top of all texts, and a Add Contact will appear//Create New or Add to Existing.

OS X 10.8.4 - Hard drives and USB drives showing up as numbers, not names.

It used to display as "System" for my main hard drive, and "Media" and "Time Machine" for my USB drives but since recently they only ever show as "57.80", "-263" and "60+000/=76" respectively.
Reboots don't show them as they should be. They appear like this in finder, desktop and disk utility.
Any way to get it so their names show instead?

Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

Messaging on iPad 2 showing numbers not names

How do I fix messaging to show names instead of numbers?

I synced my ipad 2 with itunes and updated and now the correct email address is showing when I purchase an app.
I also synced my iphone but the account is still showing one device associated with icloud.
Anything else I can do? Thanks so much.

Hi,
Check in iTunes under the ringtones tab (with the phone connected) that the custom tones are ticked then sync your phone. This has happened to me in the past.

Favorite contacts appear as only numbers, no names.

After iOS8 update, my iPhone 5's Favorites show only numbers, not names. They also do not appear in my Contacts list. All other Contacts appear as they should. I am able to call and message all my Contacts.

your post got me to thinkin - in fact I do have memory of having rxd some texts from ATT - these were inititated by them - and have even rxd spam texts from unknown sources- which ended up in the list as "numerical contacts"
I deleted those.....
Now as far as narrowing down - seems like there must be some link from the senders end between their "text name" and their associated number... which makes me wonder - what if they send u a text but don't bother to setup the "text name" stuff ? if they were a stranger on my radar I wouldn't have their contact info...
So perhaps it gets down to whether or not I initiated the conv
if I didn't - yet still put them into my Macbook Pro's Address Book
one might presume the iPhone's text app is smart enough to link that strange phone number to a contact
Perhaps an oversite on the programmers part ?

Phone numbers not recognised (sms & incoming)

After a momunmental mobile me sync disaster (it somehow trippled every contact), I had to wipe mobile me (and subsequently all conatcs on my phone) and restore it from a back up. Activating one device at a time and replacing info on device with new data on mobile me.
When I did this with the iPhone, the contacts were restored, but all messages recieved from my contacts appear as phone numbers not names, so I have no idea who sent them. Also, half of incoming calls have the same problem, not using contact info - just the number. Have backed up & resotred my phone (from said backup) and issue continues.
Any idaes on how to resolve?

After updating my iphone 4 to ios5, my contact list doen not function properly, i have saved contacts with their area codes and other details, now if a friend calls his/her name does not appear, only numbers without the local area code, and i get adhoc numbers if the calls are international . Can some one help please???

The problem is STILL not the phone. Talk to your carrier. The problem is in their system or in the interchange between their system and the system the caller is on. There is nothing about the phone that can affect this one way or the other.

From what I can understand, you see music from a different user.As far as I can tell, that could be because you 'follow' a playlist, or specific music from a user. If you right click that playlist/song, can you 'unfollow' it or 'stop following' just depending on how it's called (got a different language).It should then dissapear. Regards,

When you added your contact details in the contact app did you fill in the fields correctly. For example in contacts where it says "first" did you enter a number instead of a name?

The letters are appearing as numbers in crossword puzzles.

I type one letter in the crossword puzzle successfully. All the next letters that I type appear as numbers in the puzzle. It does not matter which puzzle site I use. This happens with usa today, the latimes and stanxwords.
This does not happen with IE.

Are that Flash or Java objects?
Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

How do I stop all the browser/HTML/menu text from appearing as numbered squares?

A couple weeks ago ALL text in my firefox browser started appearing as numbered squares. It's all HTML on the page, javascript popups, text fields, menus... everything. This did not happen after I did an update or anthing, it just happened partway through the day when I opened the browser window. I tried doing an update when I was prompted, which didn't help, and I tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version.

Try to toggle some Boolean gfx.font_rendering prefs on the about:config page to disable some features. 
Filter: gfx
Some to try:
* set gfx.direct2d.disabled to true to disable Direct2D
* set gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.use_gdi_table_loading to false
To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. 
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page. 
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default via the right-click context menu if they are user set
*Preferences can be changed via the right-click context menu: Modify (String or Integer) or Toggle (Boolean)
Try to disable hardware acceleration.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

Under 'Name' field, the name appears as the artist - name

It seems to happen after i go to add folder to add new songs. It just started happening recently. I could reinstall it but i dont want to loose all the rankings and times Ive played songs because thats how i have some of my playlists set up. So after i update the library by adding the new songs, alot of songs, but not all of them, will appear as the aritists name separated by a hyphen then followed by the actual song name. Then, when i double click on it to play it, it will revert back to the normal correct name (just the name)
Has anyone had this problem before?

I don't know exactly what causes this, but it sometimes happens on large imports.
A quick fix is that you can use this script to force iTunes to reread the tags on all the songs in your library: http://ottodestruct.com/iTunes/update.txt
