Concatenated RAID and Bootcamp

Anyway to access a mac formatted concatenated RAID in windows 7 under bootcamp? MacDrive does not seem to support this.
Thanks

Hi Fred,
http://support.mediafour.com/entries/170484-macdrive-compatibility-with-raid-dri ve-arrays - so your assumption is correct.
To my knowledge there is (currently ?) no other way to access an OSX-raid from BootCamp Windows.
Sorry

  • Mirrored raid and bootcamp.

On my mac i have a mirrored raid of 2 external hdds for music and photos etc.
I intend on buying a new mac soon, now I know I can just unplug and plug them into the new one no problem.
My question is though, that with my new mac i will be using bootcamp, and I am unsure what will happen if I boot into windows with my mirrored raid setup still plugged in.

  • How do I repair a damaged controller for concatenated RAID

Hi all-- Bit of an emergency. My iMac has been crashing a lot lately and finally it's hard drive just up and failed. I have been doing hourly Time Machine backups to a concatenated RAID set (2 USB drives of 1 TB each). However, I think the iMac crashed while backing up and hosed the RAID controller.
I've since plugged the two disks of the RAID into my MacBook Pro to see if I can repair them. I can see the individual disks of the RAID in Disk Utility. I can even verify and repair them. But i can't do that with the RAID in the sidebar, and it won't mount on the desktop. When I try to eject it from the DIsk Utility file menu, it says disks are in use.
I'm pretty sure my data on the two disks is intact, but I can't seem to get the RAID to mount as the single concatenated set on a desktop, which makes it inaccessble. Is there a way to repair the JBOD RAID without losing all my data, so I can then restore from the latest backup to my hosed iMac?
    thanks!
    Chris

I'd just like to add some screen shots so you can see what's going on:
This is what's happening in Disk Utility. As you can see, all the slices are being seen, it says it's online, etc., but it's grayed out in the side bar and I can't seem to actually do anything with them.
And here's what diskutil in Terminal says. As you can see, it's finding it, and I can even "mount" Backup, but it doesn't actually mount it. What does the "rebuild: manual" mean?
Any advice on fixing this would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks so much.

  • Adding Drive to Concatenated RAID in Disk Utility

    Hello,
I'm having a spot of trouble with Disk Utility. 24 hours ago I added a new drive to a Concatenated Raid through Disk Utility, and clicked Update to set the process going.
Now it's not responding. It just claims to be updating. I struggle to believe that it takes this long though!
I didn't format the disk before adding it to the RAID. Is this what's causing the upset?
When I try to cancel it tells me I risk losing data on the disk. I'm not sure if it means the new disk or all disks on the array - which is a terrifying prospect. If I quit Disk Utility, will my existing data on the array be safe?
Thanks in advance for the help,
    Ben

The drives are in Sonnet P500 enclosures and connected to the MacPro via a Sonnet SATA card.
On purhcase I was told this could be done, as it's a Concatenated JBOD setup. For a better description of what I mean by that, this wiki article describes it well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StandardRAIDlevels.
Does this provide any further clues?
Currently there are 7x 1TB drives in 2 enclosures. I've now added 2 more 1TB drives. I can currently see and continue to use the data on the existing 7 drives. My worry though is that if I quit the disk utility I may lose the data on the 7 original drives.

  • Differences between stripped or concatenated RAID mode

    Hi,
In configuring a RAID mode, mirror is the most straight forward to understand.
Stripped, as it says, strip the data between 2 disks having half the information on one disk and the other on one disk. This normally mean faster IO transaction on the disk 2, but need to have 2 disks of equivalent size and type, from what I understand.
But what is the differences between stripped mode and concatenated mode?
    Thanks

With concatenated, the first drive has the lower
numbered blocks, the second the higher numbered
blocks. The drives can be different sizes.
    Whate are blocs?
With striped, all disk operations will go at twice
the transfer rate if they involve more than one
    That was my understanding.
The same principals apply if the RAID has more than
two drives. With either striped or concatenated, if
And with a stripped RAID of more than 2 drives (let's say 3), how's the data split? Or maybe you need even drive number (4 drives)?
And is it possible to add a 3rd drive to a stripped or concatanated RAID after the fact (I mean, when you need more space)?
    Thanks

  • FileVault 2 and Bootcamp/Parallels

    Hi,
Before I activate FileVault 2 on my Mac, I want to make sure of two things:
Will it encrypt my Win 7 Bootcamp partition or only the Macintosh HD one?

  • Concatenated RAID

    Hey
I have tried searching for the answer to this but i havent found it. Im starting to run out of space on my 320GB external drive and im going to have to buy another one.
If i create a concatenated RAID set (the old drive and the new drive) - will anything happen to the data stored on the existing hard drive? ie: is it going to get deleted?
    Any help would be great
    Thanks in advance
    Glenn

is it going to get deleted?
    Yes.
You are better off buying a larger drive (600GB+) and using your 320GB drive for backup or other activity.

  • Concatenated RAID disk won't add

I formatted a 186.3 GB and 279.5 GB drive into an MS-DOS Concatenated RAID. I did this because I had read that you can add on new drives without reformatting the whole RAID set.
Well, I added another 186.3 GB drive, but the new space doesn't appear. I read that on +HFS setups adding drives may not work but I'm using an MS-DOS setup. I don't understand where I went wrong.
The drives are located externally through a firewire Coolgear CGS-213FB brideboard with an Inito 2430L chip. The board allows for 4 drives.

    Hello thetopologist,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If I understand what you're asking:
The raid you've made can only be increased in size by destroying the entire raid, adding the other drive and reformatting with the new drive.
I'm sure I don't know every type of raid out there, but I haven't heard of a raid you can add disk space to without reformatting the entire raid.
The conrtoller (of the raid) has to know the hard drives, their size and the configuration of the raid set. It also has to keep track of all the files that get written to the raid.
Keep in mind, what you've made has no failover protection, if one drive goes down, you lose everything. And each drive added to the raid is another point of failure in the disk sub-set by an increased factor each time you add another drive.
The Concatenated RAID set is the OLDEST raid style there is. Hard drives go bad, it's a fact. If you need more space and insist on a raid, please consider a Raid 5 with parity.
This gives you 1 failover drive (automatically rebuilding lost data on the spare drive) and one data to track parity.
If you have 5 disks, you'll only get to use the space of 3.
! for parity and 1 for the spare. And you need to knock off about 7% for formatting to figure your end capacity correctly. This makes for a safe disk array.
What you're trying to do is something of a SAN fucntion, where the actual disk drives have been divided up into seperate LUNS, meaning several LUNS on 1 disk, and having software manage the LUNS into disk Pools. These Pools are then presented to the host bus adapters on the host computers. In this way disk space can be added on the fly without impacting the data already on the system, the space just grows. These systems are very expensive, the EMC SAN we have was over 100K just to start.
Sorry to be so long with this, but I feel this is an important subject not to be taken lightly. Your investment into your computer was not cheap and neither is your data.
I guess it's like saying, "If you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet".

  • Concatenated RAID how to another drive?

    Hey Everybody
In Disk Utility help it says : "You can increase the size of a concatenated RAID set after you create it by dragging more disks to it using Disk Utility."
Well I have created a concatenated RAID a while back with two 500 GB drives, in disk utility they are both online, now I want to add a 300 GB drive to it.
And it says in help, it should be possible, But I don't know how to do that.
Do I have to take the drive, ofline? How? Unmounting does not seem to work
Anybody know how I can add a drive, without losing the data already existing on the RAID?
    Thanks

Yes, that's a new feature in the 1.5 firmware. If you pull a drive, the system makes you acknowledge you want to use it (and it's good) before it will let you use it again -- prevents people from re-using drives that the RAID is actively failing out (due to SMART errors), without noting they're explicitly intending to do that.

  • Installation of 27" cinema display with macbook pro silver key and bootcamp

For everyone out there who may be interested in using the new 27" cinema display with an older Macbook Pro Intel with silver keys and bootcamp.
    What is needed:
    1. Apple 27" cinema display.
    2. Macbook pro Intel silver key model
    3. Altona Dual Link DVI to Mini DisplayPort Converter (Model AT-DP400)
    4. Bootcamp 3.1 drivers from Mac OSX Snow Leopard V10.6.3(retail)
    Procedure:
    1. Update your display software on the Mac OS side. Apple has posted an update on their software downloads page, "LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0" After doing so, make sure that the 27" CinDisp is operating correctly and you can change the brightness from the system settings.
    2. On the Windows side, install the bootcamp 3.1 drivers. These are on the Snow Leopard distribution CD. However, there is a bug in the .msi installer that causes the installation to go into an endless loop. This must be resolved during the installation of the drivers. The following article discribes how to do this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2305631&tstart=0
    3. After you have successfully installed the bootcamp 3.1 drivers, then install Apple's bootcamp update: "Apple Magic Trackpad and 27-inch LED Cinema Display Update for Windows 32 bit".
    Good luck, it works!

I have the same MBP and recently bought a 23" cinema display on Craigslist for $140.  It works great.  I had a display port to DVI adapter and it worked fine.  Built a stand to hold the laptop vertically so it's out of the way.  Don't know about older displays but anything with DVI should work fine.
The screen size and resolution are great for photo editing.  I now have the best of both worlds, a display that rivals my wife's iMac and portability.

  • General HELP for RAID and HOME NETWORK... I'm a bit lost :(

First off, I'm sorry about the long post but I just wanted to ask everything at once since I don't know what effects what?
Over the past years I've had a MBP and have always added Western Digital Mybook drives whenever I needed storage. One of clicked and died this past year and I lost some data since I was "MANUALLY" backing up. Since then I've tried to read about RAID, NAS, and DROBO type devices.
I recently bought a Mac Pro 2008 edition because I needed more speed. I mainly edit wedding photos in Lightroom but also come from a heavy motion graphics background and do some After Effects projects from time to time.
Here's a list of my current setup and what I'm hoping to achieve but I'm in over my head of what to do???
1 Mac Pro (2008 edition) - I'm considering setting up 4 1TB harddrives inside that are mirrored. I was looking at the Caviar Black or Hitachi drives...
    2. I have two Airport Extreme Base Stations for my home network. (One is plugged into my Mac Pro and the other is near my Vizio LCD and Xbox 360. I've been toying around with sharing iPhoto slideshows (which I really like the idea of) The problem is that it seems really slow for video and hiccups on the stills sometimes. It doesn't seem to make a difference if it's pulling it from the Mac Pro or from a USB drive attached directly to my Airport Extreme. How do I speed this up? Is it always going to be faster to stream from the Mac Pro over ethernet cable than a harddrive plugged in through USB?
    3. A few RAID and NAS solutions I've been looking at are the following but I don't really understand what I get with an external device vs an internal? I also don't know which is BETTER? for easy reliable backup.

    http://www.synology.com/enu/products/CS407/index.php
    4. I've been reading mixed reviews about the Drobo but don't quite understand if it's a better solution then setting up a mirror INSIDE my Mac Pro. I DO NOT want to buy a $900 raid card for the Mac Pro though. Do most people choose the Drobo because they only have laptops? Should I only consider building something inside my Mac Pro?
    5. I was considering Chonosync for backing up 3rd level backups
    6. I just bought a Blu-Ray drive for 4th level backups that I can send off site.
    7. I have all these other Mybooks. Two of them are mirrored but only one is a 1TBx2 Sata drive. The rest are IDE. I guess I'll just use these for misc things? Maybe just plug one into the Xbox for watching movies?
    8. My neighbor down the hall has a similar setup and is using a Mac Mini to stream things (through Front Row) like Hulu and videos another room to his TV. Mine doesn't seem to stream fast enough. Since I have the MBP that I will use rarely since I got my desktop I was considering using that instead of Apple TV or a Mac Mini but it's too slow? Maybe I set it up wrong?
PLEASE HELP? I don't know what I'm doing.

A few RAID and NAS solutions I've been looking at are the following but I don't really understand what I get with an external device vs an internal? I also don't know which is BETTER? for easy reliable backup.
    Hi,
For backup, video work, photography and expanding the Mac Pro storage capability the FirmTek SeriTek/5PM would be my choice. The bundle that you pointed to will work if 130MB/sec. is fastest enogh for your needs. The card is only $70 in the bundle which makes it a nice deal.
    http://firmtek.stores.yahoo.net/sata5pm2se2.html
If you want 200MB/sec, performance I would go with the Sonnet Tempo E4P or the HighPoint RR 2314 if you desire RAID 5 redundancy.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/sonnet/mac-pro/
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/highpoint/2314/
Trying to use NAS via the network will be 3-7x slower than the SeriTek/5PM. The SeriTek/5PM is a much better choice for backup, video and photography. NAS is good for low energy, always on, low use server needs. However, you can simply turn Mac OS X file sharing on and the Mac Pro will provide performance faster than any NAS.
Drobo - Why do people even consider this option?
The performance is USB speed even with a FW800 connection.
Users have reported losing data with firmware updates.
And the unit is one of the most expensive, slow performing options available. I cannot image ever wanting a Drobo
    Backup Software:
I like SuperDuper. I also like using the "Restore" tab in Disk Utility to clone one disk to another. The key to good backup is to keep it simple and regular.
    MyBook - NOT
If your storage needs exceed more than a single FireWire backup disk you really need to go with eSATA. The SeriTek/5PM and the Mac Pro combination provides virtually unlimited storage capabilities as the tray system allows new hard disk sets to be easily loaded or dismounted.
    Have fun!

  • Many Questions on Windows 8 and Bootcamp

Hi. I have a couple questions question on windows 8 and bootcamp. I know this is probably on the internet somewhere, but i can't find it anywhere if it is. So please don't strike me down for repeat questions.
My first question is wether or not widows 8 will run on the current version of bootcamp. I know that it is not fully compatible but can it be installed with few issues since the underlying code for windows 7 and 8 should be relatively similair. I have read a posting on line that says this is possible but i wanted a second opinion. I have a 64 bit version system builder edition shipping to me right now, is this ok.
My second question is when (if ever) the patches come out for winodws 8 to run perfectly on bootcamp, will I just be able to download them, Install the patches and everything will be just fine. Would/ could it be done with out having to reinstall the operating system. This is important because a system builder lisence can only be installed once and then i have to buy another copy of windows 8 for $100.
Any and all input would be great. Thanks!

in terms of updates to win8 then as far as windows8 goes it's running on a normal "pc" not on a mac it's not virtualization here so everything works as normal
    I bought an imac 2011 version 22" 4GB ....
    I installed windows7 ultimate 64bit on it
since I bought the digital update to windows 8 pro
updated over the internet (you download an exe and take it from there)
it updated fine it use the windows7 drivers so everything in terms of mac stuff works as before
I let it update the amd video card driver and got a lot of crashes at bootup
rolled back to the bootcamp win7 drivers and it's a lot better
sure every now and then startup result in a crash but a reboot always get me into win8
play games and program in win8 never had a cash when I get in and because it's native games run great
likely when the official apple win8 support comes along I will stop getting the odd crash at boot into win8

  • Can I use *one* iTunes library for both MacOS and Bootcamp/Vista?

Does anybody know if there is a way to use and administer the same library both from MacOS and Bootcamp/WinOS?
I have Paragon's "NTFS for MacOSX", so I could actually move the library to the NTFS partition and use it from both OSes.
The thing is, the changes made on one version won't appear on the other system.
Is there a way to make both iTunes clients read/write to the same files? Is the file format of the Mac-iTunes identical with the one used by the Win version?
And isn't that an interesting question...?
    Thanks for replying and cheers,
    uu

The music files are currently on the Mac partition of my MacBook. I plan to move them to the Bootcamp partition, so when using "NTFS for MacOS" I can both read and write there from either partition.
To facilitate administration (e.g. when I add music files using the Mac iTunes, the Windows iTunes doesn't realize the change) I wonder if I can somehow teach both iTuneses (the one on the Mac side and the other one on the Windoews side) to write to/read the same (XML??) admin files.
...which then will have to reside on the NTFS partition as well to be readable/writable from either partition.
Is there a way to change the default path for the library files?
